I Gave Terrible advice to a Beginner on a Black Diamond Ski Run

- Kyle is one of my former co-workers and he is from Florida. He set out this season to learn how to ski. This was his crash course in moguls during his 5th day on the mountain.
I gave him shitty advice but I do know when people are ready for the next step. Kyle's groomer performance was stellar but he has to work on his lower body strength and coordination.

Am I the only one who thinks that this is funny in the evil way ?
I mean this is obviously bad advice but i think that exactly the point in this video
Are you joking... this is dangerous....
@@allysonmessina1785 this was done in safe manner this is great bump run to learn on. Snow is soft.
@@braedenmurray3598 I wouldn’t know, all the bumped trails here out East are hard as rock! 😂
@@bruhmagic1323 I actually ski on the East Coast. I prefer to ski in the glades. I find skiing hard packed moguls is easier than powder Skiing.
@@braedenmurray3598 you definitely get better at what you ride most. I ride 20ish days a year and pick days with at least 5 fresh cms. I had an icy day last season, the first in around 5 years, and it felt like I was a beginner again, could barely turn or stop lol.
I don’t know why he’s getting so much hate. Confidence is the hardest part of skiing and he’s very encouraging.
Should have been titled "How to not teach skiing."
What this “instructor” did wasn’t actually so incorrect. Once you’ve gone down a black as a beginner, no matter if the technique was shit and you didn’t learn shit, you built confidence in your skill. You won’t be so scared to go from green to blue and blue to black later. Also, I saw no danger in this run. The friend was obviously quite experienced and could help, the slope was quite empty, and there were no trees around
And there were no trees around... 🤔🤨
@@oliverlyell8000 no trees in the middle to turn around like in most double blacks every slope has trees in one way or another grow up
That’s ridiculous.
He was not very helpful at all. I hope they got there by accident.
This poor soul has probably now sworn off skiing for life
This is a terrible idea. Skiing/snowboarding are some of the best things there are to do outside. Don't let some idiot friend like this throw you in over your head. Take your time and go at your own pace, because if you bite off more than you can chew at best you'll be worn out and sore by the time you finally make it down or worst you could be seriously injured.
That is completely untrue. I started skiing last season and my friends took me down a few of the hardest blacks at the resort on my 5th day. Fast forward to the end of the season and I'm keeping up with my friends who have been skiing 3-6 times as long as me on double blacks. The best thing you can do is push your comfort zone a little bit but not do anything that is inherently dangerous. As long as you are skiing with experienced people, you will be just fine.
Dylan Dalia ??? Even if you are skiing with experienced friends, they can't control how you ski, and they probably aren't ski patrol either, so I wouldn't say you'd be 'just fine' even with you're friends. Yes, you'd be more safe than you would be if you were with beginner friends or alone, but most friends don't carry around a first aid kit, or know a lot of first aid things in case you do get hurt (Unless your friend or friends are doctors).
Jared Gibbs maybe this was his comfort zone
@@dylansspamaccount6911 i wouldnt say that people, who drive for 15-30 days on dblacks are experienced drivers :) and sure, you can keep up in speed, but can you still control everything and watch out for other people? the idea of stessing the zone is good, but you wont really learn much, other than that you need much to practice... at last for me thats what i learned... now i drive since 10 seasons , but still go mainly red/black in usa slopes, just because the blues/greens in usa are too full and the double blacks are full of ice, since not experience peope think they need to ride such a steep slope and mainly snowboarders just get lazy and drive down there wiht no turns at all, which ruins the slope for others :(
@@kmloutsis7833 ummmmm... I don't think he'd be a beginner if his comfort zone were black diamonds
Always remember, when you are born you learn to crawl before you can walk, then walk before you can run, in that order.
Taking a beginner on a black run is just plane silly, why risk injury to the beginner. Thats what green runs are for, then with time comes confidence and you will progress.
Im sorry to say this but watching this video is a prime example how to scar the beginner mentally, phisically or both for good from the sport before they have bearly started.
Just delete this video. It serves no purpose except bad
The way I learned moguls was real similar. Had only skied maybe 10 times total in my life. Went to the top of a black run, guy I was with told me how to do a hop turn, then I was on my way. Improved a lot that season just trying to keep up with the big boys. Now I rip snowbird 3 days a week by myself and have found even more improvement.
While well intended, this is the best example of what NOT to do to a beginner or even intermediate. There are so many errors and omissions in how one should teach someone to manage a mogul field. From position to turn completion and initiation. That is why there are instructors. This poor guy should've taken some lessons from a pro and he would've learned more in a short time than the trial and error method provided. Yikes! Makes me cringe.
First mistake; taking a newbie on a mogul run. Second, telling him to stay back. That's not fun for a beginner!
Exactly. The last thing the beginner should be doing is leaning back. That's just awful advice no matter what slope you're on. He needs to lean forward in the boot and attack the slope...steering with the tips. The hesitation will get him hurt!
@@TheDude_Abides_
And I wish he would stop saying "perfect"
well if he never tries he will never learn
@@TheDude_Abides_ Attack the slope? LOL.
JackBauer529 you don’t ski often do you?

My friend who’s never snowboarded and skied decided one day to come skiing with me for the first time ever. My brother and I took him on a blue for his first run after we gave up teaching him pizza on the magic carpet . He survived by penguin sliding all the was down.
first time i did moguls i was 6 and ripped my way down, then my brother left me on my own so i went straight down like i normally did on every other run and got taken off my ski patrol
You should’ve taught them what you were trying to at first on a slower run, and then taken them on a blue or black to help cement what you were teaching them.
This guy is on the black diamond too early, he has to practice quick turns on blues or greens first, this is crazy!
When an average punter considers themselves soooo good they’ve self appointed themselves as an instructor!
Stay mad after 11 months
While I understand that the reasoning behind this decision were good on your part to boost your friend’s morale, moguls are no place for a beginner. Granted these moguls look slightly more tame compared to some others that I have skied before, it is still dangerous taking someone who firstly does not have the right skill/knowledge to ski terrains and secondly does not have the confidence to do so (call my crazy, but I could hear some hesitation in his voice). I am seriously thankful and happy that your friend did not get injured doing this, I’ve seen family members who are experienced skiers wiping out badly in this kind of terrains. Believe me I know that all your intentions were positive with your friend, but as someone who also has gotten injured skiing this kind of terrain before, I cannot sit back and simply watch another skier take risks like that. I know that this is probably the last thing you wanna see, but trust me my intentions behind this comment are all well, I do not want to hurt you. I know it’s none of my business, but I would really hate to see you or your friend in particular getting hurt doing this. Please do not see my comment as a criticism of you, but rather as a friendly reminder of the dangers skiing can bring, particularly to those who are new to the sport. I wish you both health and happiness. May you both enjoy many more winters skiing safely.
Thank you for this beautiful comment! Instead of being hateful! We need more people like you in this world!
It would be more helpful to teach him to ski the fall line before taking him into moguls.
I feel this guy's pain. I'm from Alabama and just got back front Winter Park, CO. I'd never skied before this trip, so I had no idea what I was doing. I was feeling good until my friends and I got to the top of Mary Jane.
Unfortunately, the green runs seemed to be on the other side of the mountain and we only had half-day tickets on our last day there. I went from the bunny slope to a blue run of moguls. It took us 2 hours to get down from the very top lift; I was worn out. Thankfully, it was dumping snow, so while we could barely see around each corner, there were about 5-7 inches of powder to cushion each time I ate it...and boy did I eat it, a lot.
I can't wait to go back. However, this time I'll be taking lessons and I won't be doing moguls. Lol.
Ya bro my freinds took me to the top of Mary Jane last week and it was my first time skiing and I didn’t know how to stop yet so I just straight lined all the way to the bottom of the mountain and and fucking bailed at like 40 mph when I got to the bottom scariest and most fun moment of my life it took me like 4 fucking minutes to get down tho shit wascrazy
Update on your ability?
@@usernamebored69 Unfortunately, due to covid I hadn't been back out until this past December. Went with a group of college friends so we stayed in Denver and just hung out at Loveland as they had never been skiing or snowboarding.
We rode the ski lifts up to do some green runs only to find the greens were closed, so the only way down were blues. We ate it the whole way down but it was a blast. I'd still say my ability is beginner as I can make it down the blues but I'm not confident on them. As for Mary Jane.....I guess that'll have to wait until next time, which will hopefully be this year.
@IamFrancoisDillinger That's sad, I imagine it's hard to be skier in Alabama, but I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Also, I'm not that much different, from virginia and have only experienced one powder day ever. It was 6 inches of fresh 2 years ago. I've experienced more snow fall but really wasn't powdery at all, made for good "tree", not glades just skiing in the thin unmarked trees for max 5 seconds. I'm a advanced skier with only experiencing probably half that skiing can offer. Never been west, just north in early April and late December. No pow there either lol. I hope you get back at it soon.
It is stupid to bring a beginner to a black. Worse to bring them to moguls. What a clown.

Your kinda getting a lot of hate for taking a beginner on a black run. My dad took me on a black when I was pretty young I had been skiing already for about 3 years (I was 8 at the time and I sucked). And it let me know that I was able to do blacks even if I was very slow. I felt very proud that I did something I thought I couldn’t do. After that I improved very fast, so I like this method of teaching.
but keep in mind, these people are real amatuers, like they cant even run blues i guess... than its not a good idea to run a red one
I would say it’s okay if he wanted to do it or wasn’t forced
omegalul
You had already been skiing for 3 years! Not a beginner
that's pretty much how my friends fucked up my first day skiing, fell like 20 times during 1 run, hated those mofos so bad.
I feel for this guy ... I am exactly like him on mogules ... but will keep at it.
Great video, I had a lot of flashbacks to my first time skiing earlier this year haha
Things you should probably not hear on a Black Diamond slope. "So if you are not comfortable doing a turn right now..."
He actually did a lot better than I thought he would.
I salute you for taking him on a challenging run , if you don’t fall you don’t learn . I was skiing on a hard off piste a few days back and my guide took me somewhere I was shaking and , maybe shed a tear it was that scary , but I felt amazing afterwards and I could do the easier off piste effortlessly the next day .
I did never see snow, how about my odds of doing that?
This is like a hard blue mid afternoon (when snows been ‘moggled’ - can’t spell 😂) in France 👍👍
Man, this slope is 2x steeper than it looks

Bumps are tough... it’s not fun at all if you don’t have good snow.
I love it! Everyone is being a toxic old grandma. The guys got a good friend helping him and staying relaxed. The beginner seems to enjoy it, so what's the problem? He wasn't forced into it and when he gets down to the valley he can have a beer and tell his friends he did a black diamond on his first day.
He's a bad skier himself if he takes his own advice and leans backwards on moguls. Shouldn't be teaching his friend.
@@sexySBH Whatever, they're having fun.
It is awesome for a beginner to manage mougel in a "black" track. Never though about it. At the end of the day, the student should thank you the instructor for bring such difficulty exercise without injury. Is he really a beginner when managed to ski down not only from a sleep slope but also full of bumps! Good video.
It is not too difficult to turn at a groomed black diamond track, but mixed with moguls on a steep ungrommed slope is another story, particularly for someone without proper practicing on handling bumps.
I was thought moguls at 9 when I had no clue what they where. My dad said take your time and clear the mental block
lol when he said it looks pretty steep down there your response is "No it isnt, Fake news".
I took my wife on a steeper slope than that, by accident, and she still wants to kill me for it. The beginner should never have been on that slope.
Dude would be learning so much more on a hard blue
What’s the point in disliking? This is exactly the video I expected, whether cruel or not.
Correct me if im wrong, but is this run named “psychopath”
At breck?
I wanna learn my friend to ski when I get okder
I remember my first day on a snowboard i did half a day to learn turning then red pist...afther that i went on the restaurant and i began playing snowballs with a friend...a child we did not know began too playing with us and we just ended playing punchballs
advice you should have given: "now follow the instructor". He looks awesome for 5th day out. Fearless. I know people with 100 days under their belts who'd never have the b@lls to ski that. One turn I've seen that's really useful for experts and newbies alike is where you're traversing and put your uphill ski in a wedge. It's great for quick direction changes on super steep, narrow stuff. Probably also a safe way for a newbie to execute a quick direction change.
I was thinking maybe I might want to try skiing. Then I watched this and I am cured.
This is one of. The hardest runs on mountains. There are runs that are relatively flat and super easy to learn on. Comon try it, it's fun bro.
Wait, so you're not supposed to stay leaning forward, center of mass perpendicular to the ground, on steeper slopes?
Demetre Saghliani no this guy was wrong about that. Never lean back when skiing. Honestly I’m not sure why he said that.
I understand your friends struggle to turn on the mountain once he gets to the side. you feel like you will gain a ton of speed the moment your skis face downhill and it is a scary feeling but you dont learn how to do it on greens and blues. I learned so much more on the harder runs. He is lucky to have had you guiding him. props to him for making it down.
5:27 I don't know if its just because the steepest mountain I have been on was a red, but the faster the turn sometimes is better
This is funny but also mean, because it’s hard to break bad habits, especially when they are the first thing you learn
"The form was perfect, you just didn't stick the landing. And slow it down, you're going too fast." "Are you nervous? I can sense Hes-i-ta-sheone." Right out of the Bumps-101 instruction guide.
Do you recommend going on black diamonds on rental skies
Luis Pop buddy just do it I was doing black diamonds my 3rd day of skiing like a pro
First time skiing yesterday, and let me tell you, shit was crazy. I tried to follow my friends up the black diamond hill, and I was one of the last ones on the lift. Going up the hill I already got chills, like wtf am I doing and the temperature got really colder. Well I was making my way down, until it started getting steeper. It got really icy and I kept eating it. At one point I lot control, started sliding down, and the momentum sped up and I started to tumble, at this point I was fearing for my life as I could not stop myself. Luckily I was able to get a hold and stop. at this point of time all my skis and poles were like 100 ft. up the hill the worst part was having to climb up and slide back down being totally exhausted, and to make matters worst, i had leather gloves on lol. halfway during the day I was rethinking of buying some gloves since my hands were so cold it was stinging, well long story short, ski patrol came and rescued my dumb ass lol, btw snowboarding is way more fun/cooler. plus there is more control
My brother took me o. The steepest run on the mountain first run ever. No bunny slope or anything.
I just slid on my ass down it 😂😂😂😂
5th consecutive day of skiing for a beginner he'll probably just be too tired to do moguls!😅 And we forget that falling down each time sucks energy!
Best advice is to lean on the outside ski to turn.
Decent reflexes for a beginner. Don't skip arm day is always good advice.
There are green and blue slopes for a reason. This is like taking a novice driver and putting them in a Bugatti Veyron.
I can tell this is at Breckinridge which run is it?

my first double black i slid face first the whole way down i think this guy is a natural
Next week we’re going on a ski trip with school and I’m a beginner cause I skied only 6 times. All of the times on blue and once on a red slope. But my friend wants me with him to go to a black slope but I need to find a way to do it ...
Michalis Triantafyllos 6 times is a lot to be a beginner
Ty I went and did lessons in a ski club so we focused on one level
Ty no it’s not haha. If you’ve only been 6 times that’s still most likely beginner level.
Nice. I think skiing ability improves much faster when you overstep your ability in a limited and controlled way, such as we see here. He might have struggled a lot going down those bumps, but getting it done should instill a sense of achievement and confidence and that is super important. The next time there are some bumps along the side of a groomer, he will see that as an opportunity to learn and have fun rather than something to avoid.
That was my goal! Take him down something ridiculous with “poor instruction” then review it and highlight the areas where form and technique would have helped him. It builds confidence on easier bumps for the rest of the season.
That's completely untrue. The best way to improve skiing/snowboarding is to take things to easier terrain and master what you already know. That said, not everyone has the benefit of a full season skiing and non-stop coaching, so I understand why people want to check of something like a black diamond run before the end of the week long holiday.
I think confidence is the most important thing in learning to ski, and a sense of achievement really provides that confidence. I comfortably did a black on my third day of skiing after a colleague told me that "It doesn't matter how steep the slope is because you can always make your own slope". It completely changed the way I looked at slopes on the piste and skiing is now my favorite sport.
Michael Kan0towski
I KNOW you're clueless on ski instruction.
What resort was this?
The gest resort ever
That's a great video
Everyone in the comments totally over exaggerating what a 'black diamond' run is, at worst his beginner friend is going to tumble 30 feet down the hill...it's a black run in an American ski resort not a no fall zone in Chamonix's backcountry...calm down.
At least he stuck with him my mates ditched me once and I was fucked hahaha
Telling him to slow down, be careful with rocks and using pole is not helpful. He might have an easier time if he relied on pole planting a bit more and still using a wedge to maintain stability. However, telling was not helpful, showing and telling might do the work. Step by step, bump by bump was possible. Falling could be a bad pattern to develop. In fact this guy did very well with turning around, however he was not capable of shifting weight toward the fall line/apex to maintain balance, therefore he needed to keep a bit wedge to remain balanced and on this not so difficult black bumps he could keep his cool and slow down after going over a few bumps in traverse and make his way down in zig-zag manner, rather than trying too stop too soon and falling.
As a ski instructor myself, I should say being able to ski oneself is totally different from teaching. I had experience taking students who switched from snowboard to terrain like this 3 days after their switch. They were good snowboarder with good balance therefore handled the bumps in the safe way I talked about. In this video, it is a bit too much for this guy, but there would be a better way.
what was the terrible advice?
not a single commentor talking shit about this video has read the description lol. this is his firends 5th day on the mountain, he obviously has most of the basics under his belt. He might not have been able to just cruise down a black but this was really good for him to build confidence and understand what a black looks and feels like. the best way to progress is to challenge yourself and looking at how his friend skiied this, i bet he can pretty easily cruise down a green or blue.
Um, wrong. He had no business being on that run 5 days in. He learned nothing but frustration. His friend knows Jack about teaching skiing.
So it’s much better to do long runs right across the slope and turn at the end. Rather than doing short sharp turns and catching loads of bumps lol
Late comment checking in, I went skiing a few years ago which had been the third or fourth time I had been to the mountain to ski, some could say I was still a beginner to moguls. On the steeper and more technical mogul runs I went however horizontal along the run as I felt comfortable, and sometimes I even stopped to look at the terrain which kind of gave me the visual map in my head so I would know where to travel next. I’ve said this many times before and i will say it again, it is always most optimal to have an experienced skier with you when you’re learning so that you can trust the person and thus give you more confidence. in my case, there wasn’t a whole lot of falling like in this video because the teacher that taught me was a very good one.
oblivionjaycee it’s really just preference. If you feel confident with doing shorter and faster turns then do that but for someone just starting out this is a lot easier to control your speed.
Reminder: There’s other people in the slopes too.
This kind of sucks. I’ve been a beginner on a mogul before and it is not fun at all

The guys are doing fine. Why so much safety sally whining in the comments? It’s good to have brains, but that doesn’t necessarily exclude having balls! 😀
Eric Olson Just let people be free and take their own, in this case very very reasonable risks: no avalanche terrain, no endangering others, no bloody nothing -; the guys are trying out their limits - this is what we males are all about. Yes, we men need this (these ‘balls’’ I mention jokingly truely though). Mind you, hurt bodies mend way faster than broken spirits.
Here, in this particular case, I can see no one pushing anyone else to anything. Instead, step by step, someone who feels confident on the slope leads along a willing whole-heartedly commited companion to a safe finale. Don’t you like happy endings?
He is a awful coach
