Beginner ski lesson down a Black Diamond

- I occasionally see skiers skiing terrain that is beyond their abilities. Some of those skiers I will see later being brought down in the Ski Patrol's sled. This day was a frozen hard pack day. Off the groomers was torture for the most experience skier. As I was heading up the chair for my first run I noticed a skier going down The Face, a Black Diamond run. I thought to myself "this should be interesting. As I got closer I could see that this skier was way out of his element. I didn't want to see someone get hurt and then see them get put on a Ski Patrol sled to be taken off the mountain when I ride up the chair again. So I had to help this person get safely down The Face.
Saved Kevin's ass, recovered his dropped glove and give him an awesome free ski lesson. What a day!
Bless you for helping out a fellow skier in need...! The world needs more people like you..! 👍🏾
Maybe you lol
I agree and giving him some patient instruction and lncreasing some self confidence in him again.
It was so kind of you to notice him and take them time to assist. The fact that you also gave him a ski lesson...amazing!
I appreciate your passion to help...God bless you, Rick...and all the skiers on mountains..Cheers🎉
I love helping people out like this on the slope. Most get dismissive after a while b/c they're embarrassed, but I love doing it for as long as they'll let me. I remember being that helpless and getting no support unless I crashed. It's a great feeling to help them get down safely and get thanks for helping.
If i had a way to cancel out all background music I would. But you did a fantastic job helping him out,. Well done!
My husband always saying ‘it looks sooooo fun’ looking black diamond and this is why I have to stop him. Wish he could meet u one day on the slope though. 😅 Also reminding me all the nice ppl who stopped for me when I fell as beginner (and still now). Yes, we need more ppl like you, really respecting you. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you, as a beginner it means the world when someone helps
thank you for your kindness. you can be a best ski coach. He has been improved to be a blue track skier by your instruction. Great!
Good on you for helping this guy out. cool learning video too
U R one of those that we need more of on and off the ski slopes! 💙
Good on you for helping him out, im not the best skier yet and i know that if it was me i would've wanted someone to help me. Keep it up man
Great you stepped up and helped. That guy was in dire straits.
God bless you and your kindness. 🙏🏻❤️
You are such an amazing person. Someone else would just laugh at him.
The best value on a ski mountain is a beginner ski lesson. The next best value is an intermediate ski lesson. The funnest thing on a ski mountain is an advanced one-on-one ski lesson. But especially those beginner group lessons. It's fun being with other skiers, the instructors give beginners confidence and keep them out of danger and just make it fun. I still text back and forth with the instructor who taught me how to really ski moguls and still try to book an individual lesson once a season with him, mostly just to have someone to ski double black runs with who can help me build confidence.
The suspense!!! Thank you! Black Diamonds here I come!!!
i ve been on double black diamond with snowmaker on. Gave up, roll down, reattach skis, repeat. Luckily the snow was thick and soft.
"I have to make it as positive as possible" Perfect approach to teaching a difficult thing in an unpleasant situation. You're so right that its a really good way to learn about your edges; of course most beginner lessons should be learning this across a more pleasant traverse, and its way more important than pizza/snowplough (less likely to career into others too).
"Figuring out his inside edge" was looking good until you panned around to show what was coming; my stomach churned just sitting here in a chair.
Honestly though, better to take off skis and walk/butt slide down?
@@mantiskf2003 Yes, but I wanted to retrieve his glove and get him down safely without taking all day. I selfishly still wanted to ski that day and have some fun just skiing hard and fast. It turned out good for everyone.
It is very nice of you!!!
Pretty much normal conditions over here in the east coast 🤣
I was thinking the same! Good old New England ice skiing. And that I’d 100% give it a go, I’d hate it, but I’d try it once.
What a nice guy!
Well done man👍
Lesson learned: When you can barely snowplow, stay off the black runs. Good job getting him off the hill.
I like a challenging slope, no matter the conditions.
I remember that green feeling :) specially steep blue!
I can imagine how exhausted and frustrated he must have felt by the bottom. He did a good job continuing to take instruction, and you were tremendously patient. Kudos sir.
You da Man!! Looks like east coast perfection
This is exactly why I love this culture. So kind!!!
A living legend
Bless ü!!! We need more like you
You are really a very nice person 👍
Beautiful! 🎉🎉
Thank you! 😊
Great job
People didn't lie about how the skiing community is so friendly!
That's great that you were able to save him! I wonder if it would been best for him to just take off the skis and walk down, as I think it would have been both faster and safe. I'm new to skiing, so I'm not knowledgeable of what's actually best when stuck in this situation.
If anything, never take off the skis and try to walk down, especially not on a black diamond. It is more dangerous than the basics Kevin was so amazingly taught by Rick here. Sliding down sideways on the steepest parts is always safer than walking in ski boots with skis in hand. I do hope you never get in such situation though! Any ski instructor will tell you these as well, so just listen to them 😊
Super nice for you to help him. Never understand why beginners try to take on a black.
He was looking for his glove
Ego and overconfidence. I stuck to the greens until I mastered them then moved to the easier blues.
Saved his life!
I was an out of practice Intermediate skier when I was caught on an Orange Slope with a black beginning section of just 40m followed by very steep zig-zag icy orange to the bottom...weird ski resort in Azerbaijan. The initial path was just 6m wide with a sharp U turn, very steep. The ridge was a massive drop into exposed sharp rocks (snow had melted) and the mountain side was also missing snow. The snow was melted below the catch fence. It was my first run in 7 years. I had to learn all these tips by trial and error. I couldn't take long turns as there was exposed cliff on one side. I was out of shape so my core was burning after forcing quick turns on the ice. I had to take rest after each turn as my stomach was burning - also, on an empty stomach. It got better when I realised to put weight on outside ski instead of inside. Tookn an hour to get down. Got so hyped after reaching bottom, I went up again and did it all over again 😂 . Good to see the technical terms for what I was attempting, now I can practice these. I just wish I wasn't the only one there and people like you could stop and help
We could have made a great video about your experience! I'm glad you made it down without injury. I would have helped you make it down if I were there. Sounds like you forced learned all by yourself and advanced to a higher ability level. Keep skiing and stay safe!
Good on you for helping him out. He could have wrecked himself badly.
I wish if you can re upload the video where the background score is reduced while you are giving instructions. It will be helpful for others (me) to hear and learn.
Sorry dude. That's not frozen. But it's so nice that you were able to help the person struggling. ♥
Yep. Crappy glop. Not frozen. Maybe early in the day, before the sun hit it.
Thanks for your complement and feed back. Don't let the sunny day fool you. It was in the 20's and a groomer day only. (for everyone) It wasn't wind blown ice but it was set-up tracked out frozen snow off the groomers. It did get a little more forgiving on the lower part of the decent. Believe me I didn't want ski down this terrain. I almost convinced myself that this guy would be fine as I was riding up the chair lift and continue my groomer ski day. Maybe he would have been fine, maybe not.
Sounds pretty frozen to me. That noise is just so chalk on blackboard. And the feeling of your edges being worn away every second 😩. I think I might just have traversed it With jump turns at the end of each traverse 😂
Looks like typical east coast conditions
"Yeah, I can ski black runs"
When in doubt, get an instructor. Don’t go on a Black Diamond just because you think you can! Black Diamond runs are meant for advanced skiers for a reason. Before hitting black diamonds, it’s a good idea to ski hard blues with bumps and see how well you can handle that. Overshooting your ability is one of the most common reasons why ski accidents happen.
I'm glad you were there to help! I'd like to hear what you are saying if you could eliminate the music. I'm sure I could pick up a few tips from you but all I can hear is music.
Hi Janet, Try watching on different devices and adjust the settings. I should have lowered the music levels to make this better. I can hear most of the live audio on my devices, although not easily on a few of the interactions. Thanks for the feedback, I'm still learning.
The mountain brings out the best in us
I wish I had anybody, especially you last week when I accidentally went down Rusutsu's West Mt. "Tiger" last week replete with moguls. That was a disaster and had to walk down 20 minutes or so.
what a brave soul
i have a feeling they had no clue what they were prepared for and if so bravery
@@MiguelinaAriasMIA You are right, I had no idea what would happen and Kevin had very little fear because he had a glove recovery mission before him. Like the Rod Sterling TV story about the "evil monkey's paw."
I tell my kids all the time don’t mess with your gear on the lift. This poor fellow has zero business being on a blue let alone a black under the chair. Hopefully he gets some lessons. Really nice of you to help out.
If that was a diamond black in USA I'm amazed. from what was visible in the film I doubt it would have made red in Austria.
Wow, you’re an angel! How can I get a ski lesson? 😉
I helped a new skier down a blue run that normally takes 3 minutes to ski but took him 1.5 hours to get down.
They're fools
1.5 hours! Good lord! You get bonus points for patience. I’m just about to teach my niece and nephews, I’m not excited.
Well they got side slipping down now.
Hero
This snow/terrain combo is no fun for anyone, you did well.
Some conditions mean it takes all Ur surviving skills. Not skiing now, jus surviving!!! Lol!
Call ski patrol and get them a snow mobile ride down.
OMG! Great job! I cannot imagine if he were not found by anybody what will happen to him. He might die during midnight ……😮
This must be the west. These are prime conditions on the east coast.
What's a beginner doing that high up
The camera never does it proper justice. The slope doesn’t look too bad, but I’m sure it was.
It was horrible for the first two thirds from the top. Even though it was sunny it was 10 degrees below freezing setting up from the night before. Thank you for watching.
That was so kind of you and you were so patient as well! When you coached him I could see improvement. Hopefully Kevin will keep at it and get some lessons. I am sure you helped him from getting injured. Great job! 😊
Don’t know if he was brave or stupid or both to risk this for a glove. Well he got a free ski lesson, on the job training.
I'm Toby.
Hey Toby.

Yeah I was an instructor at Meadows after having raced there several times growing up ski racing out of Stevens Pass. This is because Meadows is one of the worst run school ski schools I've ever witnessed and based on what other people have said its been this way a LONG time. Couldn't even teach students how to properly bail out and self arrest because its all about the "experience" and trying to act like a destination resort without actually being one. Some of the friends I made with the ski school commented they are good skiers at Meadows but are pretty mediocre on other mountains. Several students hadn't gotten off the magic carpet on ballroom in 4 years! Its a darn shame. Great mountain but the way everything is run is an absolute joke. Kid fell off a chair and the director mentioned they didn't have the red plastic lines at the loading point on the chairs that every single other ski area has after I brought it up. They would always ask for suggestions but never listen or follow through on a single one lol. The face isn't that bad but considering its almost as difficult as it gets at Meadows they really need to have signage.
B+ for acting.
Men often think they can handle conditions like this, and they can’t. Note how light his bindings are set; set for a never-ever level skier. I have done this same thing countless times, sometimes with guys who bring their girlfriend into suspect terrain. Often they get mad at me, and yet later I will see the sled taking her down.
No need to say “black diamond” run. It’s a “black” run, or a “double black” run.
Do we say “green circle” run? No.
Do we say “blue square” run? No.
Many say black diamond and double black diamond though.
If I comment I violate a non disclosure agreement... I said too much again 2/22/22
he should have taken his skis off is the best advice...sorry.
Many have slid back to the lodge on their ski pants!
Quitters never win and winner never quit!
