Okay after doing some rough calculations I worked out it is actually possible he is going 100 km/h. At one point in the video he is going around 100 km/h average during 10 seconds while passing 18 ski poles in total. Rearranging the S=D/T formula we are left with D=SxT. 100 km/h in m/s is around 28 m/s so if we multiply it by 10,51 seconds (time taken to pass 18 poles) we are left with a total distance of 294,28m. Divide that by 18 and you get the average distance between poles, which is 16,34. If you have ever skied you will know that the poles are more or less this distance apart. So he is going 100 km/h. Does it look like it? Absolutely not. When skiing yourself you know 100 feels a lot faster and that is maybe due to the increased wind noise and adrenaline going through your body. In the video it probably doesn’t look like 100 because of how wide the track is, the smoothing of the GoPro and because you are not actually there. Also, the video is not synced correctly with the gopro speedometer, explaining why it said he was going 22 while walking. I hope this cleared a few doubts and arguments in the comments lol 😂

Some things never change, no matter where you go. It's not the run which poses any kind of threat, it's the unskilled flailers...you've got to anticipate their moves at least 50 yards away. This looks like a nice, easy cruiser.
When you're going at this speed it becomes much easier to pass people. They almost look like they're going in slow motion. I find the faster I go, the easier to avoid the traffic because the time in which there can be a potential collision when passing someone decreases and you don't have to predict their movements as much.
the overlay is like 3 seconds ahead of the video that's all. You can predict his turns by looking at the compass so I don't think there is anything wrong except timing
Love this track and love l'Alpe d'Huez. No matter the color, it's such a nice moment, starting at 3300m down to 1800, 15km of pure beautiful mountain. When, like me, you don't want to take the risk of skiing out of the limits.
Thanks for sharing. For all the Americans commenting, it's marked as a black because there's a fast narrow section at the top with a steep drop off to one side and there are usually 2-3 sections that get very mogully. The reality is that most of the run is a red/blue with a long section of green at the bottom through the valley. But they have to mark the whole run as black because there's no other way around the tricky bits. On this day, however, it was nice and flat and fast.
In the video he goes maximum 80kph, I have skied at 100kph and even 120kph the whole speedometer is bs and besides the slope was at max a red and even green on some parts
Love the video - I was there a few days ago. Sadly you seem to miss the start of Sarenne - right turn at about 1:05 (several skiiers standing looking down the steep bit). You did Cassini and then joined Sarenne at around the 29 marker. I did the same - twice! It's hard to find the entrance. The whole valley is lovely though. I agree with most commentators - it isn't really a black, it just has a couple of tricky bits - I think its creative resort marketing. They also say it's 16km when it's more like 10 or 11km.
Brings back some memories of working a season there years ago. To those who say it is not a black understand that it this is the best condition you will ever see the run. Nearly every time I rode it sections of it were mogul fields increasing the difficulty. Same with the le Tunnel at Alpe d'Huez, looks easy when there has been fresh snow but more often a steep field of bumps the size of buried VWs. Also note that the video doesn't show the rather flat final section of the run to the lift at the bottom.
How is everyone getting so salty about if it’s a black run or the speed he’s going lmao. it’s a beautiful run which is memorable for anyone that’s ski’d down it and I’m glad this vid is up so I can get some nostalgia, people need to relax
Sarennes was classified black in early time when snow was not worked out, so you had to do with icy snow at the top, deep snow fields in the medium section and rocky straits down the mountain. Plus the track length. With the carterpillars, the track is rather red except for the upper section where you must not fail (cliffs on the left of the track). The true challenge in Huez is the Tunnel, on the right of Sarennes : you go through a tunnel piercing the rock and then straight down the mountain.
I went down this run after watching this video. On the day I it was sunny but had snowed for 2 days straight. The whole run down was about 6ft deep snow and took me 30 minutes. Was so hard due to the moguls that had formed and the extremely narrow paths. I didn't have powder skis at all so nearly kept sinking.

It's definitely a black - as its steep in some sections and once it's been skied on throughout day gets big moguls. Great run first thing in morning - major leg burn when you do it in one go. Green section at bottom is a nightmare
No, the Alpe d'Huez climb is from bourg d'oisan to the ski resort at 1850m and the Sarenne is from the glacier at >3300m to the gorge de la sarenne at 1500m, below l'Alpe but not on thee road. If you want to climb it you'd better take good mountain shoes.
Somehow I get a big fear of heights on these very small runs on the side of a mountain. I’m scared I’ll fall off the side. I’ll much rather go down a nice wide one
Get a few hours of private lessons, it should fix that issue because the teacher should be able to teach you control on the smallest of paths. Had the same issue, then a friend gave me a few lessons and it just helped my confidence on those small paths enormously.
Steep sections and ice aren't the only things that make up a black run. The lengths of a route also contributes to their grades. Provided you don't take sandwich snacks every 50 metres and you ski the whole piste in one run it would actually be very tiring. Hence why it is graded as black.
I did this same run in January but forgot to bring my helmet on the bus (we were staying at a neighbouring resort) so I had to wear a chicken hat that one of my friend’s had the whole way down lol. I’m not the most proficient skier in the world but wasn’t gonna miss out on the longest black slope in Europe. Had a couple big falls on the way down. Please don’t forget your helmet people!
@Flavio C Thanks for the comment, I have currently have 2013/2014 Rossignol Ti skis, Tecnica mach1 lv 120 boots. About 5 ft 9 (5ft 10 on a good day :D ) and I weigh shit loads over Christmas but normally around 12 stone.
There are many aspects affecting the impression of velocity. One is the camera wide angle, the hight from the ground, the objects distances etc... Its not that difficult for a intermediate skier to gain 100kmh. Imo, there is nothing wrong with the gps
Damn Skilled... that’s a great piste run, but no way that could be classified a “Black” piste! Frankly, I can’t see where the grade gets above 55% anywhere on this piste. You did a great job skiing and had some fun while doing it 😉
Brenden Theriau trust me... don’t believe everything you read on google. Get your protractor out and measure 78 on a bit of paper.. very close to being vertical
Just a quick question. Where do you wear your gropro? On your chest or on your helmet? I just bought the new hero 11 black and idk where should i put it, for now i've bought the helmet adapter and did a quick bike pov but it doesn't look as good as i though. Ty!
Well, to each his own, but crowded narrow trails are my least favorite place to ski fast. All it takes is for one yahoo below you to do something unpredictable for it to turn into disaster.
Guess you don't know about ALL skiers are suppose to ski in control. Guess your another snowflake where that rule doesn't apply to you. Just other skiers.
Uphill skier/rider always has the responsibility. You crash into a unpredictable kid downhill from you, you can pay ALL of the kid's medical bills. Doesn't matter if the kid changed directions at the last second. You're the one that is going to pay no matter what. If you had left enough of a buffer around the kid, you wouldn't have collided. That's why uphill skier is always at-fault.
He slowed down significantly for the kiddo to 30. And he did not endanger any other skiers. Though, if other skiers take the hole slope, from far left to far right, that's not how you ski.
Wow, that was amazing experience watching you ski The Sarenne. I am a huge fan of LAAX in Switzerland, but after watching this, I am going to take a trip and do the same. I am a snowboarder, so hitting that speed will be out of the questions. Well done and awesome video!
You have exactly the same ski-style i have, speed , turning everything and this is my most favorite slope of all times!!, it has changed a lot tho since all these years🥰🥰🥰
This slope is actually pretty good fun, but you often get a lot of inexperienced skiers who just want to be able to say they did the longest slope in the world, but end up using the whole slope doing long snake turns in everybody’s way. Here, he was lucky to not get that many. It is still definitely worth doing if you ever happen to be at l’Alpe d’Huez.
Everyone's free to use the slope. People in front using the whole of the piste are "not in the way" they are enjoying it the same as anyone else and have just as much rights as you... Remember, you are always responsible to be in full control and if you hit anyone ahead of you, regardless of whether or not they do something unexpected, it is always your fault!
I've been on this. There are some parts that genuinely deserve to be black but it's pretty easy anyway. I mean I've skied down here with many unconfident skiers and they've all managed to finish it.
Steep sections and ice aren't the only things that make up a black run. The lengths of a route also contributes to their grades. Provided you don't take sandwich snacks every 50 metres and you ski the whole piste in one run it would actually be very tiring. Hence why it is graded as black.

"u skied straight into a rock and your bady fell halfwya down the mountain uncauseos"
well fuck
Wow! I went there in the summer, when there was only snow at the tops of mountains, and it looked quite a bit different!
Thanks, for giving this good feeling ,since Jan 2020 ,I haven't skied anymore due to Corona sequels on my equilibrum and muscle strengh
I have never done the Sarenne in one straight line, but loved to anticipate your trajectory,
Thank you again
I think you guys have missed the point - AW looks like he's having fun. Having skied all over the world and now just looking at mountains after two rounds of spinal surgery I'd be happy with 10kmh!! Thanks Alex
Your words hit me hard dear Ted. I am currently living with CFS, and I miss not only skiing, but doing the very basic movement. Pple must reflect and learn to appreciate more and more
Wow. Amazing. Wished the video finished at the ski lift!
I needed this .... Vive le France
Thought this was steep gameplay, still stayed for the vid
Love the video! my baby girls that are 6 years old, were like... what is snow skiing and this came up. Thanks for the vidz
My legs are burning just watching this.
haha
Well, you sure have strong legs, mine hurt just watching.
Thinking the same way :-D
Alpe d'Huez is such a lovely area! And so is the Sarenne, cool video!
Hi @Maxim Bollansée. Alpe D'Huez is a second home amazing part of the world thanks for the comment.
It's definitely a black - as its steep in some sections and once it's been skied on throughout day gets big moguls. Great run first thing in morning - major leg burn when you do it in one go. Green section at bottom is a nightmare
My hands sweating from just watching this ngl
Also my man be walking faster than Usain Bolt 💀💀💀
haha this made me laugh
@@Alexskiing :)
Beautiful! As many know, they use the same hill in many of the stages of the Tour De France
Love watching this guy just push through the crowd at the start. No patience with this one
As a relax-before-run snowboarder I'm sitting here like, is that normally what skiers do?😂
this would be pure bliss
Somehow I get a big fear of heights on these very small runs on the side of a mountain. I’m scared I’ll fall off the side. I’ll much rather go down a nice wide one
Get a few hours of private lessons, it should fix that issue because the teacher should be able to teach you control on the smallest of paths. Had the same issue, then a friend gave me a few lessons and it just helped my confidence on those small paths enormously.
Really good driver. Greetings from AUSTRIA
My luck is, one of those beginners would turn out in front of me. No way that is a black run, easy blue. Beautiful scenery 👍
Still its a red with difficult narrow parts. (I dont ski slopes in my freetime, just working on them :D)
Steep sections and ice aren't the only things that make up a black run. The lengths of a route also contributes to their grades. Provided you don't take sandwich snacks every 50 metres and you ski the whole piste in one run it would actually be very tiring. Hence why it is graded as black.
this video makes me miss alpe d’heuz and skiiing wish I could do that in my lockdown but stuck in britian :/
Same :(
I love seeing the ski classes snaking down the mountain as a whole unit lol
except this inconsiderate guy dangerously goes straight through the middle of them at high speed
What a long and endless slope!!!!
I cannoot go skiing because of the pandemic, but this is so good thank you it feels like im in there
I hope you are able to ski soon!
I've always wondered how fast I am skiing, now I know...100+ all the time. Anyway, very nice skiing in this vid.
Bee Gee the speed in this vid is wrong
Download the skitracks app. It tracks your topspeed and everything
Since when is going straight down with some "speed check" curves nice skiing?
I did this same run in January but forgot to bring my helmet on the bus (we were staying at a neighbouring resort) so I had to wear a chicken hat that one of my friend’s had the whole way down lol. I’m not the most proficient skier in the world but wasn’t gonna miss out on the longest black slope in Europe. Had a couple big falls on the way down. Please don’t forget your helmet people!
This is a blue line. greetings from the alps.
For sure, and actually green in most of places
Thanks for slowing down by the big groups. Too many people on that trail for speed.
Yes. Zipping through the ski school at 50-60 kph? This ski patroller would have punched his ticket as a warning.
1:11 Lol the narrow runs with the steep drop offs on the side, quality gnar gnar!
Man, that run must suck, considering how quickly he's trying to get off it...
Even if it’s not a black run, this is still epic
In Russia they call that kind of skiers "a flying crowbar"
Не, летающий лом, который вообще не кантуется, задал вектор и летит)
VADIM BLYAT
This video brings back some great memories!
That speedometer sure shows happy numbers
Every one can drive fast, but just some people can drive nice
agree....you're wasting a lot of terrain on the long radius-thing, granted most is groomed BLUE, but still.....
...and even fewer nice & fast......
Good video, but never was that a black run!
Well we have different ideas of what a black run is.......😳😳😳
It’s a lot steeper than it looks, GoPro footage does that
It's also an extremely long run, thats why it is marked as black so beginners don't get cocky and think it will be easy
CrazyMaffins that’s a great point!
@@MushroomFrostys
So steep that kids have to use poles to push forward?
Out of curiosity: what are your skis and boots? What's your height & weight? Your descent looks very smooth and stable. Great video!
He is using a newer go pro, which really helps with stabilizing the video. Not trying to take away from his abilities though.
Mom I can’t take out the trash I’m watching epic ice skating down a mountain!!!!
Thanks for the comment!
excellent video -no cheesy, dumb music -natural sound is highly appreciated!
La Sarenne is not a black. There is a confusion with "The Tunnel", which starts from the same altitude, and which is a real black.
Sisi la sarenne est la plus grande piste noire d'Europe.
mais il y a toujours un touriste étranger pour mieux savoir
There are many aspects affecting the impression of velocity. One is the camera wide angle, the hight from the ground, the objects distances etc...
Its not that difficult for a intermediate skier to gain 100kmh.
Imo, there is nothing wrong with the gps
I completely agree. I don't know what all these commenters are talking about.
Damn Skilled... that’s a great piste run, but no way that could be classified a “Black” piste! Frankly, I can’t see where the grade gets above 55% anywhere on this piste. You did a great job skiing and had some fun while doing it 😉
Alain Brouillaud there is no where in the world where the piste even hits 40 let alone 55..
@@nathanwilson3673 quick google says that's wrong, 78% gradient on harikiri run in mayrhofen Austria. That's only 35 degrees, doable with winches
Brenden Theriau trust me... don’t believe everything you read on google. Get your protractor out and measure 78 on a bit of paper.. very close to being vertical
@@nathanwilson3673 gradient is different than degrees
BrecKR what do you measure gradient in
Sacre Blure!!!!Magnifique! Super fun. Thanks
The only yahoo is the dickface going way too fast.
@@thefatvegan5008 unfortunately a lot of people don't understand this
@@flashoflight8160 so true yet it seems a lot of people don't understand this
2:13 Little kiddo doing max 20 km/h - speedometer says 50 :D
well he's going twice the speed of the kiddo
@@timonschneider6290 true..
Thank you! I can highly recommend! It's a beautiful run to ski/board. Fingers crossed you can get out there next season.
You know there is this really cool thing called turning
You have exactly the same ski-style i have, speed , turning everything and this is my most favorite slope of all times!!, it has changed a lot tho since all these years🥰🥰🥰
everyone sayin how this isn’t a black run. i agree, it’s a purple one
The camera does not reflect the high speed and slope grade. But I’d love to try this run! Awesome channel!
I loved the skiing in Alaska and Utah, but scenery in France, Austria, and Switzerland is so much more beautiful and a lot of wide open spaces.
Hi
I really have not gone skiing in Switzerland, but would love to some day anyways
Ski fast, then no one can hit you from behind!
man this run is hardly a blue, just easy groomer all the way down...
@@Harry_Ng it’s groomed with no ice or trees or moguls or rocks or long steep parts
Looks like so much fun!
I hope this pandemic don't cancel all of the skiing trips next season.. :(
Hello
ik heb dit zelf ook eens geskied. sommige stukjes zijn echt ontzettend snel maar velen waren wel te doen een mooie afdaling met veel uitzicht in ieder geval!
Wow didnt know it felt so calming watching this..
