    Most of all, you typically can achieve much higher rpms with inrunners which is very important for EDFs to perform well. ;)

    EDF’s are spinning a smaller fan at high speeds. The larger outrunner can obstructs more of the fan and gives less rpm.

      @@MotionRC May be for beginners moving up to the next level with their first edf , warbird or 3d plane?
      I do have one tip though , if you want to take off a very small " C" Clip , put a small bit of clear selotape over it before un-clipping it , that why , if it decides to jump off , you can find easier with the tape on it..👍👍

    wow i had some of these ideas completely backwards in my thinking. i put two outrunner higher kv motors in my pbr boat thinking it would run cooler. But your right it was harder to find space for those rotating cans. I guess i will be searching for some in runners and then probably put some heat sinks on them to keep them cool

    Ty4sharing James!! If I buy a twin engine airplane.. one engine is going to be an OutRunner the other engine is going to be an inrunner that way I have a inny and a outtie..!! 😆

    My first car to do 100mph was a highly modified 1/16th nitro monster truck. It was massively overpowered with a potent outrunner from an edf it’s first run’s were ridiculous! Shredding or exploding wheel’s and tyres at a slip of the throttle even with the motor directly driven to the input of the 2:1 transmission! so being already way too fast but having massive amounts of torque to spare, I turned the transmission upside down and stretched it turning it into a streamliner! It needed a push start and didn’t start to accelerate hard until around 60mph! Ever been scared of a 1:16th car?

    I like the free Wing EDF units quite a bit they are efficient easy to change easy to repair if you throw a blade. Lately the factory has been doing a great job of balancing them. I can't complain about the quality and the changes that they have made to keep up with the industry. That's why I waited to get a new f-104 because it has the high performance motor and it now...

    I used to prefer Outrunners because they seemed so much more powerful. I still use them on my 3D planes and warbirds, but I'm happy to have inrunners on my jets.

    I think the statement that inrunners have higher efficiency is not fully correct: for the same weight outrunners have higher efficiency as they produce much higher torque at the same current. Just compare FW inrunner and outrunner can lengths.
    The statement about cooling is also debatable: both motors have holes at the ends. Wire coating can withstand 200C while regular magnets lose magnetic properties at 80C so having them on a spinning can is better than in the middle of the oven. Not to mention the part sitting inside EDF plastic housing
    I think the real reasons why FW switched to inrunners are:
    1) They are much easier to produce - seldom need factory balancing.
    2) Can be made much longer and powerful
    3) Low number of poles may use cheaper ESC with much lower switching frequency
    The main drawback: they are much heavier than outrunners of the same power.

      @@canada8460 I think for anything that doesn't fly inrunners are better: they are cheaper, although heavier for the same power. Also easier to mount - thinner and no spinning outer parts.

      Thank you for your reply. Really. For some reason, all manufacturers use internal rotor motors. But AEG-Ridgid recently released a series of Subcompact 18V cordless tools with an OBL external rotor, touting their benefits beyond belief! But in tests, the drill-driver showed almost the same results as ordinary one-class Makita internal rotor drills ... Although you very clearly articulated the advantages of OutRunner motors, this is a beautiful and correct circuit for a motor, albeit more complicated!

      The only thing I did not understand is for ground devices. Well, those who do not fly through the air, for whom the weight of the engine itself is not so important, what Efficiency Coefficient is given by the Outruner relative to the Inruner, because the revolutions on a 12V battery and the Outruner can reach up to 25000!

      @@canada8460 I've seen both inrunners and outrunners as high as 12000kv but on ordinary bearings the limit is around 60000rpm. Talking about bearings: I had the front bearing failed in 3 EDF inrunners (one of them Freewing) due to overheating as it's placed on a shaft with magnets. In outrunners this never happened to me in 11 years. So, outrunners certainly have better cooling.

      Impossible to answer without more details. Generally, 9-blades are better for regular flying 12-blades are for hot setups.

    The reason an out runner has more torque is because the magnets are on the outside of the motor and has much more mass than it's counterpoint. The in runner has less rotational force because the magnets are in the center of the motor thus having less mass. Less mass means the in runner is capable of higher rpms ie: higher KV rating. The out runner can swing larger props with a lower KV and usually don't require gears to accomplish this task. The in runner has less torque but is able to rotate much faster and to swing a big prop a gear box is a necessity.

    I believe that you have made an error on the way a in runner operates. Just as the out runner motor they are brushless thus the motor windings are stationary and the magnets rotate around (out runner) or inside (in runner) the windings. The in runner is basically like a shaded pole motor that are in a fan, the major difference is that the fan is usually single phase and a brushless motor is considered 3 phase and operates the same as most 3 phase motors. In any event either in runner or out runner motors the rotational force is derived by spinning magnets. Cheers.

    Why not just use an inrunner always and use gears to get the higher torque as needed?? You said that they dissipate excess heat better.

    So, now that they switched to the inrunner on the ME 262, is the factory applying locktight where they didn't before? I had read that there was an issue with them coming apart a few flights in .

      After each time at the field, one needs to make sure they do their proper pre-fiight checks. With EDF's, its always a good habit to open the motor hatch and clean and check the screws to make sure they are tight.

      They all originally were outrunners, but most have been upgraded now to include an inrunner instead
