Those prices are completely eye watering. As an auto driver, I do very much get the logic behind your thinking on the increased claims. They are insanely easy to drive. I've found trying to drive as economically as possible in my EV gets me thinking way ahead and driving very smoothly. I think its age . Pure and simple. I passed my automatic driving test in the last year. I'm in my 50's . Family circumstances meant I had to have access to a car .
So my thought process was that it would actually be safer to go automatic seeing as being 'older I won't have muscle memory of decades of actual driving.
I live in the NE of England. Have a decent job
After passing I purchased a nearly new 2023 Small Hatchback 1Ltr 110hp auto , with all the gizmos. at 19k
I was expecting some eye watering insurance .( fully comp ) . But to my surprise it wasn't bad at all.
So much so I had to triple check all the information I provided to make sure I hadn't unwittingly made a balls up ..But no. My insurer informed me my age ( old ) meant even though I was an auto , a new driver the number was correct . my insurance came in under a grand. So yeah being a middle aged fart is the key apparently :D .

For those that don't mind taking an extra risk, getting a few years on the road on the 50 or 125cc motorbike or a moped could be a good way to save money on your first car insurance. I was able to move my 4 years NCB from the motorbike policy to insure a 12 year old Mercedes A150 for about £500. It was a bit of a hunt to find an insurer that would accept the NCB, but well worth it, as I've saved about £1000 on the first year of policy.

Another really interesting video Richard. Something you didn't talk about that I found out very recently when I was looking around at nearly new used cars is that many car manufacturers only produce cars with automatic transmission. This has happened very quickly within approximately the last two years. I can only assume that this is to prepare all of us for driving electric vehicles which are only ever automatic due to the way they work. This means that if you want to buy a very modern car you are likely to find you can only get it as an automatic now.

I ended up with a different car somewhere in the middle. The car itself plays into the price as well. Because a lot of fresh drivers in the UK has Corsa or similar car, and those generate more claims, you end up in the same bracket instantly. I got my licence (manual) recently, the insurance for me was around £800 on a 6 yrs old automatic car. No other drivers named on the policy. I think the biggest factors are age and location, I'm in my 30s and in live in a small town. I bet insurance for under 20s in London is the most expensive. £3000+ is crazy though.
I think the fact that fully comp is no difference or even cheaper is a big indicator how messed up is the situation. Your first car might only be worth a few thousand, but a lot of other cars around you are super expensive (especially in London). The insurance prices reflect the stupid high rate of increase in the cost of the average new car lately, but the underlying greed is double for the insurance as the insurance companies have to make the extra profit too despite the increased claim amounts.

I completely agree with what you’ve said in this video. I’ve learned in a manual but I’m taking my test in my own car, which is an electric, ie; automatic so I’ll have an auto license and it bugs me. I do plan ahead still but I know I don’t have to. But there are reasons and I think it is another reason why auto license holders might be more likely to claim. I’m disabled and struggle to change gear, an automatic car makes it easier for me to drive. It also makes me a higher risk driver. And so more likely to claim 🤷🏼‍♀️

I was going to comment on the 67 horsepower Toyota Aygo. And I guess I still am, just in a different way. I have a '93 Geo Tracker, 1.6 L i4, makes 80 HP from factory. Only thing is, I live in Colorado, and I just looked up how much the power drop for a NA engine is at this altitude, and it turns out it's around 18%. Which means my car actually makes around 66 HP. I can agree with your assessment that it's about the minimum amount of power that's usable in a car. I basically drive full throttle all the time, and how fast I want to accelerate is determined by how much I let it rev out. The power drop also explains the atrocious 0-60 times. I did a test once and found it was around 21 seconds to 60 mph, substantially slower than the 14s numbers I'd found online.

A major factor I found after doing 100s of quotes for all different types of cars (fully comp with parents as named drivers and 5000 miles) was what date you selected. If you look online, you’ll see a lot of sites that say about 3 weeks is optimal. This was not the case. Going through 30 days in advance, I found that about 8 or 9 days was the cheapest for some reason. Also, look to see if your parent’s car insurer has a multi car discount. This saved me an additional £200. Insurance will also go down a little bit once you’ve passed your test and you can actually input your driving license number, as well as decreasing some more when you own the vehicle.

This year we bought a newer car (2018 1.5T) with all the safety features you can think of,but insuring it even with 2 years no claims it cost us £1400. Counterpoint:
Lots of 'older' drivers tend towards automatics, older drivers (we are talking like 70 - 80yr olds) are more likely to have an accident (scrapes and bumps - even if no one else is involved). So that does skew the figures of 'more claims for automatic cars'.
All EVs are automatic with a big push towards phasing out ICE cars means more and more cars will be automatic, eventually all of them.
Insurance prices have always been insane, even 10+ yrs ago Top Gear made a thing about it but it does seem to have gone through the roof in the last few years for sure.

Driving a hybrid car feels like driving a manual since you're always planning ahead to squeeze out more fuel. I am a manual driver but while I was on automatic I realised that I was less focused since the car just works whereas when I'm driving manual I am forced to pay attention otherwise the car will stall. An imperfect workaround that I found is the use the dual clutch gearbox manually so if I am not controlling the gears the car would sound like a tractor and notify me if I'm dozed off. Honestly dozing off doesn't happen often but in the manual it would never happen.

If your mother was listed as the policy holder and main driver and you as a second driver you were 'fronting' which is technically fraud. In practice it's all fine until you have an accident, the insurer investigates and leaves you holding the bag for the cost of damage to the 3rd party's vehicle.

Here in Italy sadly enough the situation is the same, we have a bit of a different rules, for instance here you cannot have an only automatic license and you are considered a “new driver” up to 25 years old or 23 if you had your license for at least 2 years and also we have something kinda like a levee related to your ability to avoid crashed (don’t know if that makes sense to io but on our insurance you can find a class that goes from 1 (for the drivers who never had an incident up to 18, if you have a incident it goes up two classes viceversa if a year has passed and you didn’t have any crashes the classe goes down by only one) but the prices are insane, for example, I’m 21 and I’ve had my license for about 6 months and as per rules I’m in the classes 14, per rules every new license older is out in that class, if I were to insure a car (manual and around 150 k km or about 80 k mhl) older than 8 years with minimum coverage I woul need to pay up to 3500, just because I’m a new driver and the car is old, for example my fiance who’s 27 and has had his license for about 7 years and has a 2020 car with under 20 k miles used to pay just 700 and still he was in the 14 class! (When you got a new car usually you are out in that class no matter what) obviously when I finally got my license he needed to app my name on the license and now we pay more than 1200 and still he is the main older, if I were to be the main older we would pay 2000 and up, it’s insane and frankly quite sadly since I can see that owing a car by my self is getting more and more just a dream, sorry about the rant but it’s infuriating to see that things are this bad basically everywhere

But now I am seriously thinking about getting a manual license for the insurance only. I will keep driving my automatic car though. The streets in the UK are too small to use a manual car. Interestingly, I used my old address in Hull just to check if changing the address makes a difference, it brought the insurance to about 40% of the original quote.

In Toronto, Canada a manual car does nothing to the insurance rate. Im a new driver and have been quoted premiums of $7,000-$9000. Sadly bc of how high accident rates are here, insurance costs are out the roof for new drivers

    Hi Richard 😊😊😊
I was wondering if you could do some more mock test videos perhaps?

I think age and time since passing definitely affect a lot, I was getting quoted between 3000-6000 for cheap, not powerful cars with small engines, then nearly 2 years after passing I paid 1200 for a 1.6 Diesel 90hp 2009 Fiesta, after driving it for 2 months, with my birthday in between, I switched to a 2.0 Diesel 130hp Insignia, and it ended up being nearly 200 cheaper than the Fiesta.

When I insured my first car (fiat 126 bis, 1988 F reg) in 1996, the premium was around £350...
Roll on to now, where I have full ncd, on a 2001 mx-5 I'm paying the same, but with added extras such as business use and breakdown cover etc...
The prices that are being quoted these days for people who have recently passed, or even passed a few years ago but have no ncd due to having fleet cars etc, is absolutely ludicrous

I found confused to consistently be a lot more expensive when comparing quotes. Make sure to use money supermarket and compare the market too.

These insurance prices are insane. We have 3 vehicles and have been looking into insurance costs to insure our daughter when she gets her permit at 15 years 9 months (Maryland - we don't have separate manual and automatic licenses for non-commercial vehicles). The vehicle is a 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe (375 hp/470 lb ft of torque). Making her the primary driver with full coverage adds just under $2,500 a year. I thought this was expensive.

I have a manual driving licence and drive an automatic, never had an accident and my insurance renewal went down 10% with eSure.
