    I went to a mid range rifle course at Thunder Ranch and there there 2 guys using 5.56 ARs. They did better than most in the class.
    I used an AR15 in grendel. All three of us were the on,y AR15 shooters and most were using 6.5 creedmore. It was a great class that had many people rethinking their mid range rifle choices.
    Edited to add. I used a razor gen III and was one of on,y two able to hit a 6 inch square target at 950 yds (took me only 2 shots as the spotter was great). As well as long range, the positional shooting with my lpvo was much better than others too. As I was able to turn it all the way down.
    As to bipods. Clint and one of the instructors said they’ve seen too many of the magpul bipods shear off their legs but there were a couple in the class and there weren’t any failures .
    I use the GGG bipod and think it is the best. I have 2 different Atlas and one Harris, had a magpul but felt it was too flimsy.
    Check out the GGG light duty bipod.

      What you said is spot on. Good training there at that place too. Even though a bit heavy, I prefer the Atlas and a LaRue mount, best I ever used. Nothing like an 18" spr Mk12. I have a Mod 1. If I want CQB I swap uppers to a 11.5" So easy to do with an SBR. If I want to travel I either notify or take an identical lower and ditch the cqb and take a 16". Works for me. 6.5 is over rated to me. Only superior past 600 yds vs 308. Beyond 800 I wouldn't use either, and go 300wm or 338. Nobody in the field is gonna have it either if you need to revert to sourcing other's ammo. Out to 300 I can do sbr. Out to 800 I'm fine with Mk262 and a Mk12 Mod 1. 600 out I'll take a 338 AI-AWM-M. Beyond 2k I wished I had a 408 Cheytac and a prism. That would be sweet. Better to get up closer anyway though.

      😂 I'd like to see how somebody "sheared the legs off" their magpul bipod. Like they just spontaneously came off.

    Barrel profile, length and harmonics are the cheapest way to accurize a gun across most ammunition.
    Not necessarily a bull barrel, generally a barrel that tapers appropriately. So can also get a decent weight to accuracy. I've not analyzed how fluting contributes yet, but assume it's a net positive.
    Great video, cheers.

    Love your channel. I'm a little late to the discussion, but man, I have to agree with you on the weight issue. In the Army (way.... back in the day) we had been issued M16A2 with the heavy barrel, and the added weight of that stupid barrel made a gigantic difference. I don't feel it was any more accurate, because I was breathing so heavy I couldn't keep the rifle still anyway. 😂

    I’ve watched this video at least two times now and decided to take my SPR out to distance with PMC XTAC 55gr M193. I wasn’t expecting much, but like you said in this video using it as a tool to read the wind helped a lot, and I think I did that fairly well. I also got my muzzle velocity wrong (no chrono). I was going off of 2900fps and kept hitting just a little high and had to dial it back down and come to find out I should’ve been using 3000fps and where I was dialing to after hitting high is where I was for 3000fps. I was able to make fairly consistent hits out to 600 yards easily and after I found out to put 3000fps instead of 2900fps into my ballistic calculator, I tried one at 700 yards (couldn’t hit it at all nor see impacts or splash earlier in the day), and to my surprise I hit it first try. I tried 5 more rounds and got close but I was still very happy. Of course I learned my mistake towards the end of my range trip so ammo was low. I’m in the same boat as you with not having a ton of money to spend on gucci ammo and stockpile it cause it’s just so much. PMC is very affordable and available in my area and I will probably just continue to stockpile it for the near future. Great content

    I swapped my lower with a KE arms polymer lower to save weight. Although it is not adjustable I find that that I like the m-16 stock length and it works well in my body armor. Shaved off about a pound from my system which is similar to yours. I also like to have an arca-swiss adapter plate installed on the rear of my handguard where it wont get in the way, but I can attach it to a very steady camera/tri-pod.

    • @Maximus98351
      @Maximus98351 2 года назад +1

      @@borkwoof696 I have an optic that weighs 24 ounces on the upper so most of the weight is in the middle centered on the receiver. If you are wondering if the balance is conducive to shoulder firing while standing or kneeling, then the answer is yes you can do it easily. It still has the drawbacks of being a large rifle with a large optic on it though, so I shoot off my bipod most of the time.

    I put together a similar build a couple years ago. White Oak 18" SPR 1:8 .223 Wylde barrel, Aero S One 15" rail, SilencerCo ASR brake (SilencerCo Saker K suppressor), Magpul bipod (on an ADM QD release) and sling, Streamlight ProTac HL-X light, B5 Sopmod stock, Magpul K2+ grip. Trigger is the Geissele SDC and I'm running the Athlon Helos BTR 2-12x42 FFP rifle scope with a offset Holosun 509T on an Arisaka mount.
    I'm also getting about 1.5-1.7 MOA groups consistently with Wolf Gold, American Eagle, and PMC Bronze. I handload the Hornady 75gr BTHP to 2800 fps and I get consistent .75 groups from that. 300-700 yards all day 700-1000 is shockingly consistent as well. I'm able to punch milk jugs at about 1100 inside of 5 shots on a decent day. I cannot second the 20 rounds mags for prone shooting enough, a very often overlooked but important bit of knowledge.

  • @philliplopez1501
    @philliplopez1501 2 года назад +25

    Bull barrels have a place with the SOF guys due to the fact that they realisticly expect to be outnumbered from the start. Thiis leads to tactics that rely on high volumes of fire with little backup. If that's you, then the accuracy and heat resistance are worth every ounce. If not, then you will be very happy with a lighter rifle.

    • @BuckFoeJiden
      @BuckFoeJiden 2 года назад +2

      The only two rifles I'm running anything above a government profile on as far as my ARs go is my 10.5" pistol and my AR10. The pistol is a 7.62x39, and the AR10 is a precision rifle. The pistol is a budget build, and the whole upper assembly came from Bear Creek Arsenal. It holds some of the tightest groups I've ever seen out to 100 yds, and that's for the same reason I ran an HBAR on my AR10. Harmonics.
      They're both fairly heavy for what they are, but the pistol is still very maneuverable. Shooting the pistol indoors with a brake is like getting hit with a flashbang though 🤣 I'm eventually planning on form 1ing a dedicated lower, and a suppressor for it and turning it into an SBR.
      With the right hand loads, I can hit a golf ball with the 308 out to 300 yards.
      Government profile barrels are more than enough for your standard rifle, though. The only way I'd run anything heavier would be if I planned on buying a transferrable m16 lower and doing a full auto build. Unfortunately, I don't have $40,000 to piss away on a rifle, and I'm salty enough about the thoughts of paying the ATF the tax stamps required to convert my pistol build, much less paying for an SOT/FFL licensure.

    I like the setup and it’s similar to my SPR build. BCM 18” SS upper, spikes lower, fixed A1 stock, SSAE trigger, ZeroFail BCG, K2 grip, PA 2.5-10 Raptor scope, LaRue SPR mount, Harris bipod on MWI qd mount, Streamlight HLX. Your comments on accuracy are correct, there is a lot of internet BS going on. I can and have got sub MOA groups with 77gr match out of mine but i mostly shoot 55gr and it’s a 1.5” gun all day. Had i to do it all over again, I might have went 16” and a adjustable stock to save weight. I plan on upgrading bipod soon.

I had the same idea of using the Kinetic Dev pic-to-MLOK quick adapter to make my Magpul bipod removable, but in practice, it keeps popping off when I lean into the gun. I think it might be too much weight overcoming the tiny springs holding the retractable “tabs” into the MLOK slot.

    I like what you did with your build. I went on the opposite end of the spectrum for one of my SPR builds, it's a bull barrel 26" build with the seekins receiver/handguard assembly
    It's the most accurate 556 rifle I own currently, first time shooting 77grain smk handloads through it was a .42" 5 shot group.
    I have another SPR build, this time it is actually designed as a special purpose receiver. It is a part of a system of uppers I made around a particular lower receiver. For this one I decided to make it more closer to what you have, but my profile barrel is heavier. It's the ballistic advantage 18" SPR profile. Still shoots great, certainly not to the others level, but they are fundamentally completely different SPRs.
    One is an SPR meant for stretching a 5.56 semi auto to its extreme edge at the cost of practicality.
    The other SPR is a field able long range 5.56 rifle.

    Running a very similar SPR setup. Started from a DDM4 v11 and added a Larue 2 stage MBT trigger (which is so crispy), Swampfox Arrowhead 1-8, Vortex Crossfire red dot offset, Harris Bipod, Arisaka light with a EXT2 malkoff head, running 77gr OTM in 20rd Hex mags...overall its a bit heavy but not overly so. It's a tack driver with sub MOA groups all day. I think total weight of kit and SPR with a packed Eberlestock Renegade on the back is 40lb.

    The biggest issue with pencil barrels was POI shift as they got hot. The M16 was notorious for this (InRange showed a 6" change up and right at 100 yards. with an SP1 That's an 8.4 MOA shift!) . But modern barrels can be made way better than what we had in the 1960s. A thinner barrel will always open its group up more than a thicker barrel over a string of fire, but as long as the barrel doesn't POI shift it's not really a huge deal.

    Wow, I'm barely into the the vid and you've already made some very interesting points.
    "Every rifle should also be a fighting rifle, unless you're in a very large group". Good point.
    I have ARs that I hunt with that don't qualify as fighting rifles, but they also aren't in 5.56, and they aren't something that I'd carry on a walkabout if zombies were an issue. When I travel I usually have a second upper that IS a fighting rifle in 5.56, just in case getting home becomes an unexpected challenge.
    "Effective out to 800 yards". 18 Inches is good, 20 would be "gooder", but that gets really long if you are sporting a can as well. If one were actually on some type of long range patrol or walk back to their home, would dismounting a can be worth while in order to make a 20 in barrel less unwieldy? My POI doesn't change w or w/o the can at 100 -200 yards, I haven't checked at longer ranges. (Note to self, check....)
    Too bad 6 ARC isn't more common. It seems like a good caliber for this senerio. I reduced the number of different calibers I own a few years back; and I don't shoot 6mm now, but that's a caliber that tempts me to add a caliber back to the collection. If SHTF tomorrow, ammo resupply in 6mm would be a problem.

Probably would keep .243 and .270 as well if I didn't have to sell them to fund a decent carbine in 5.56, ample mags, ammo, a can, and most importantly, some training classes. I've got 10.5" ARs, 16" ARs, 18" ARs, 20" ARs, ARs in 5.56, in .308, and even in 7.62x39. I'd like your opinion, and some feedback, on the following sir, the TL;DR below the explanation of why I'm choosing the round I'm choosing.
    If I bad it to do over, though, I'd have invested ALL of that money into a 6mm (.243 Win AR10, or 6mm ARC in AR15)
    The .243 Win with any sort of real barrel length will have less than 5" of vertical spread between 0 and 300 yards with a 100 yard zero using 70-80 grain soft points, which are GREAT at killing ...deer sized... animals.
    6mm ARC has similar but slightly lower velocities with the same .243/6mm pills. I've personally rang steel out to 800 yds with an 18" .243 Win, and on the right day, I believe I could have stretched those ELD rounds out to 1,000+
    The only down side to 6mm rounds is that they eat barrels, so you'll want a GOOD chrome lined barrel.
    The most of the rest of my money will probably go into the BCG. Barrel + BCG is where most of your accuracy and dependability comes from, imho.
    TL;DR
    The scope I REALLY want to run is a US Optics TS 2.5-20x with a canted red dot. For now, I'm planning to run my budget 10x SWFA SS, with canted dot. How do you feel about running a canted dot as a primary optic, and the 10x SWFA SS for longer range engagements, or would you recommend going ahead and getting the 2.5-20x. The one I'm looking at has the JVCR reticle, which works GREAT for 150-500 yd shots.

  • @DRay-or4tc
    @DRay-or4tc 2 года назад +2

    You should point out the importance of Reticle choice in an SPR as well.
    Ideally everyone should be running MIL (MilRadian) or MOA for ease of communicating wind drift/come ups. Unless you're a PRS shooter most use MIL.

    I shoot my match conditioned AR in 1000 yard Long Range Service Rifle Competition and 600 yard mid range competition. These are iron sight sling supported prone events. It’s fun stuff because there’s some difficulty with it, that’s to say great scores require good wind counters.

    • @MattWaller04
      @MattWaller04 25 дней назад

      I'm calling bullshit on this... ain't no way you're shooting 1000 yards in a competition with an iron sight equipped AR and making any kind of consistent hits outside of pure luck. You're well past the transsonic range of 5.56 and would be hitting like 10+ MOA at best. Couple that with the fact that the front sight post would be significantly larger than the target at that range so good luck seeing the target. Plus, you'd be holding several feet above the target and probably several feet either side for wind.
