Lovely comment. And the reason I watch these wonderful movies, to keep my mind in a better place. This one only twelve years before I was born telling me what it was like for my mother and father, what they wore, the hair styles. the way they spoke to each other. The bravery, courage in the face of the enemy. Excellent.

I had never heard of Gracie Fields until a few weeks ago when I just happened to see her in an old movie. ( I am American and we didn't get a lot of British films before you tube) I immediately fell in love with her and watched everything I could find on her. What a great and talented lady! I do not think those coming after our generation will have much to say about us: Instagram, TV reality shows, the entitlement society, wokeness, the post-Christian British values, the rapacity that is prevalent in our civilisation has made us narcissistic, callous, anti good, unforgiving, rapacious, ignorant, arrogant, weird, intolerant, liars, unfaithful, brutal, pervert, envious, frivolous, etc.
Since 2020, everything is being done to turn our world, the old world, upside down. Not that the populations of planet earth asked for a radical change. No, they did not. It's being pushed on them. What is being pushed on them? A dystopian existence.
That's how we repay the courage of those who fought "for the freedom of the world", we are told, a world we can witness disintegrating before our eyes.

    • @chachadodds5860
      @chachadodds5860 3 года назад +1

@@peterblahut5106 That's a wonderful legacy for your family to cherish.
It isn't so surprising that you were unaware of your Jewish heritage. There were some Jews, that survived the pogroms of the 19th Century, and the Holocaust, who emigrated to other countries, started their lives over, and who out of sheer terror, decided to hide their ancestry, often changing their names, destroying any existing documents that would prove such origins, abandoning the practices of their faith and culture, and even the ownership of Judaica.
They often made family pacts, to walk away from, and never speak of their ancestry or experiences ever again. In their minds, it was too risky, but that decision left many of their progeny in the dark, not only about their ancestry, but their heritage of faith, as well.
Often though, there are small clues within the family's daily practices and language, that belie the history. If your family has odd names for everyday objects, that are not recognizable in the English language; if there are family recipes, that were passed down from great-great-grandparents, that still bear non-English names, and no resemblance to American food, or are "From the old country;" if your family has traditions whose origins are not readily explained, these are likely remnants of your heritage.
Maybe, this is part of your family's history. It's worth looking into, if you haven't already done so. And talk to the oldest, surviving relatives you have; they often know the family secrets that were never spoken of.
That could set you on a fascinating journey of discovery.
      Shalom.

    Hello Chris Rogers,
I must join others here in thanking you so much for sharing this movie.
My Mother - may she rest in peace and Bless her Spirit - managed to survive the horrors that was World War II. She and all my Family on my Mother's side were from East Germany (as far as I know, all have passed away by now and many passed away during the war itself).
My Great-Grandfather along with many others helped to smuggle Jews out of East Germany by way of the theatres. My Mother was merely a young teenager in those horrible times. When it was obvious what was left of the family had to get out of the country, she somehow got papers for her Mother, my Grandmother - may she rest in peace and Bless her Spirit - and Grandfather, and they escaped East Germany.
My Mother and her friend were part of the Resistance, and eventually time ran out. They could not stay, so they risked their lives to escape the Wall. Death was a certainty either way, but at least death while escaping made more sense. Most who tried that night were shot and killed. My Mother and one friend managed to get out. Until the day my Mother passed away in 2012, she had shrapnel in her back from those times.
Although this movie is very much a clean version of the profound horrors and devastation of those times, it is a quite good and well-intentioned film. The actresses did a beautiful job.
Again, thank you very much for sharing this movie.
    Blessings...

What a great movie and even better that it is based on a true story! What courage and bravery people had during these times. We have such a large population of young spoiled entitlement minded kids today who would benefit the most by watching this movie and others like it!

Well said, should be a headline somewhere... it’s scary how the young are so clueless, period. We grew up with heros and stories about real giants who made a difference in the future of America, and the world.

I have not seen this gem before, I am very close to the ending: * * * * *'s for everything and everybody! Having said that, my comment has to do with the
"Constance Bennett and Gracie Fields, both were coming to the end of their film careers": The entertainment industry (and the etcetera's) has wasted the talents and lives of far too many people who had so much more to give. I feel.

Sir ,I hope you have enjoyed your stay in my country.I am a 72 years old French man and I have to tell you that I disagree with you on one point : from my experience I can say that not everyone alive during the war claimed to have been with the resistance, but the truth is that many people claiming to have had links with the resistance were not telling the truth ! often they were ,at the best, what we call last minute résistants ! « Les résistants de la dernière heure! »...many people who did help the Resistance have never or hardly ever mentioned it ,they have never bragged about what they have done...a few years ago my mother told me that my grandfather who owned a printing shop printed many documents,papers,tickets...for the resistance ,but he never asked for anything,no award,no medal...and got none ! ...my mother told me he never talked about it ,but was proud of what he did saying :I can look at myself in a mirror ( je peux me regarder dans le miroir !).

Bit different when someone is pointing a gun at you with every intention of using it. Look up Oradour-sur-Glane you armchair warrior, Many people you call collaborators - nd yes there were more than a few - notably the Vichy supporters, but most were people trying to get on with their lives and not wishing to be a dead 'hero'. The Resistance DID fight for various reasons as thousands of plaques on walls attest, and street names. But you of course would know so much better than those who lived through it. The SOE yes I have great Respect for .
But the French resistance was a sick joke at best the various groups spent more time fighting each other than the Germans for control of France after the war was over.
In fact a large majority collaborated with the Germans to get ride of rival groups.
And the self Promoted "General Degaulle" He was really a low ranking nobody in the French army who fled like a scared Rabbit to Britain then Bravely hide behind the British skirts whilst making stupid speeches urging the occupied people to sacrifice themselves whilst he like the coward he was did not.

    • @purgatoryofhope1414

Sadly the French people were so wrecked after the first world war that they really very rarely stood up and fought against the Germans during the second World War it was aliens in their country Brits Americans disenfranchised Germans polish Etc people with false passports who really were the backbone of the Underground many priests almost all the priests and nuns in France were killed trying to save downed military as well as escaping refugees. The Vichy government was a horrible sick joke. But no worse than the Swiss who turned back refugees at the border even if you got into Switzerland they would literally send you back to whatever border you came across on so you could die after they of course stripped you of all your fortune that you had on you if you had anything left. We like to glorify certain people after the fact there was a lot of false propaganda put out after the war so people would swallow Monty getting his Awards or de Gaulle becoming president when they should have really been cut down at the knees for their actions true history is what's in the books later written by people who were there who didn't care anymore what they wrote because either the years were far enough away the person had died or they honestly did not care had no political reason to care

@@MsCValentiner The Democrats have been moving our country into communism since FDR and before that the progressive movement at the end of our 19th century, following every step Marx laid out in his Communist manifesto - create a welfare state dependant upon a central government - dummy down the educational system to lower self-confidence while inventing a victim mentality. And, never teach history or civics -so that decades later there would be a path to teach revisionist history. Take over colleges by granting them money through Federal taxation causing colleges to be unaffordable. The Fed Gov. pays 60% of our universities budgets, yet the students aren't prepared to work. They get rid of God to create social envy. Jews and Christians learn from the bible that it is wrong to envy or covet. Democrats push to redistribute wealth so their elitist class can keep down the masses. They dictate costly laws that are actually regulations (like Obama's "I have a phone and a pen"), like Obama care, and thankfully Trump has gotten rid of the punishing mandates that made premiums triple and quadruple. Dems want to take our guns and blame the guns instead of the thugs. Yet, they don't want to punish immoral thugs, high on drugs that they and Hollywood have encouraged. Every nation in the world's history that has gone socialist eventually move to hardcore Nazism, fascism, and communism. Republicans never voted for any of these. Obama confiscated our private lands. In the state of Nevada, he took 90% for his centralized gov't., but Trump gave it back the land to the state. We have been fighting against all of these actions because those of us who remember our lost freedoms will not allow our country to go communist. Our country is unique and prosperous because we are a Constitutional Republic where "We The People" are free to decide how we live. Not the Gov't.
