Refreshingly professional video. Clear camera work. No screaming kids, barking dogs, 100 mph wind noise, blaring radio or nagging wife in the background. Thanks!
Had a P0106 code and check engine light caused by a vacuum leak from the integrated PCV valve. I followed your procedure, no problems but I had to use some nylon pry tools to break the seal loose to get the old valve cover over off. I disconnected the negative terminal of the battery for about 15 minutes to clear the check engine light, started it up and it idled smooth again and no more vacuum leak. Check engine light remained off. Thanks for the easy to follow video.

I'd just like to reiterate what everyone else has said over the years since you published this... I've watched several of these on RUclips and your video is the best one for this repair. Thanks for including the diagram with the order to torque the bolts.
Nice video. The illustrations are good with no distractions. I will be performing this on a 2011 Cruze. I was told by the dealer that normally the intake manifold and crank case seals can be a part of the poorly designed systems in these cars and should be replaced the same time to assure a complete job. I am hoping for just the valve cover with its flawed pvc valve.

Had to do this on my 2011 chevy cruze 90k miles. Beware you might need a new coil pack as well. One of my coils was cracked. $200ish for the coil pack. Great video.
Thank you for posting this, I am about to perform this on a 13 Volt. Your video is the first one I've found to mention the Volt for this repair. It has the same exact problematic valve cover, but I'm thinking since the engine is not always used in the Volt this is a much less common failure. The car I have in particular has 128k on it and by the lifetime mpg number, 35mpg, the engine has been used quite a lot more than the average Volt. On my car it won't set ready for O2 or catylst so it isn't passing emissions, nor is it setting a check engine light. I'm hoping this is the fix. Your explanation of the use of RTV was the last little unknown piece to me so now I have full confidence to do this job.
@@MrSubaru1387 , it went in without much of a hitch. The wire harness is a little more extensive on the Volt (shocker), but it went right in. The engine is noticeably quieter now. Before my delta between short term and long term fuel trim was as high as 10 and now it's no more than 4 so this is definitely a positive improvement. The engine definitely did a quick and rather audible re-learn of itself there first time it was fired up with the new valve cover. Now to see if it sets ready so I can get this thing registered.
I went for and a 30 mile drive last night and now it set catalyst ready. Now I'm down to just O2 sensors not being ready which means it will pass emissions in AZ as you are allowed one to not be ready. I'm taking her in tomorrow!
Excellent tutorial! I've done the procedure but mine is super stuck, almost if it is glued to the top of the crankcase. How can i remove it? I've tried with a screwdriver but didn't work. Thank you so much! And how about the grey glue that you put? What is that?
Thank you very much yours is the beat video because you showed every detail and especially putting up the blue print of witch bolts you go by tighing. Keep up the good job and videos
Installed the same valve cover with gasket and had no issues initially. I had 3 fasteners on the new valve cover that were pretty loose and started to leak oil. I cleaned up the oil and retightened the fasteners that were loose. I was wondering if I will need to take off the new valve cover and new gasket and clean up oil that might have spilled inside under the valve. I just cleaned the outsides where I saw oil leaking, as well as removing the foil coils and cleaning up around those as well.
I replaced the entire cover and gasket as an assembly on a 2014 Cruze (GM Factory parts) and I got literally a spray of oil at the left front corner just in front of the arch on top of the engine passenger side. I removed and double checked that the gasket was properly in place. Torqued as in your video etc. Placed a GoPro and light under the hood and when accelerating oil is squirting all the way to the passengers side fender well. Should there be really high pressure inside the valve cover? The part number supplied by the Buick dealer was 2519-8877 and they said it was the same for the Cruze. Is it possible that there is a slight fit difference?
I noticed there is silicone at the you have to scrape off when you remove the valve cover. Did you have to reapply silicone at those spots, when you reapplied the valve cover gasket?
great video I would like to add if you use a screw driver in the oil fill part to get loose, so you don't mark the head prying it there. Also use Q-tips to clean bolt holes. THIS IS KEY as the bolts use very little TQ. I find Q-tips clean a lot of my engine holes before I reinsert bolts
Check the bolts on your replacement valve cover. If they don't have the rounded tips like the factory one, knock them out and use the factory ones, you will never get the square ended bolts all to line up to the holes. The bolts are in tubes, put RTV under the washer under the bolthead, the orings won't stop all the oil. Don't buy the cheapest valve cover like I did, $43, and maybe it will bolt right up.
I hope you read this and respond please! My 15 encore had the new valve cover replaced earlier this year by the dealer. The gasket is leaking on the outside for sure. Now there is oil all over the spark plug boots and tubes filled! I’m assuming it’s leaking on that inner portion of the gasket (the part that goes around coil pack). Since there are no plug tube seals do you think that’s how the oil is getting down into the tube wells? Thanks.
great video, pretty easy, just DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN the bolts it is easy to brake them. believe me i know! lol but make sure your car isn't covered by 5year 100k warranty.

What about the valve cover on the 1.8 liter chevy sonic? My sonic has 130k miles and I just noticed it was starting to leak around the front edge of the valve cover and around spark plug number 3. I replaced just the gasket which cost me $45 from autozone. Thank you for your helpfulll video!
MrSubaru1387 i think it does have an integrated pcv valve because when I looked inside the valve cover there was this long rectangular box that oil started coming out of it when I turned it over. Also the pcv tube connects directly to it. What is the issue with this design? I didn't have any check engine codes either.
On the 1.4 the PCV diaphragm tears and causes an intake leak. Outside unmetered air inters the intake through the valve cover. The PCV isn't serviceable alone, so the valve cover is replaced as an assembly.
Has there been any fixes for the janky pcv system? I need to replace the check valve in the intake manifold and the pressure regulator in the valve cover as I'm typing this

I'm waiting for the weekend, also I decided to change the whole cover instead of just the gasket it wasn't that much more money to get the whole thing. Before I get the whole new cover I will try removing it when the engine is still warm it seems in my head that it would make a difference but I don't know, I'll keep you posted.
MrSubaru1387 Hi I did get it off no problem, I saw other videos that recommend lubricating the gasket before reinstallation, I didn’t see you lubricating yours, is this you should do or not? Thank you in advance.
MrSubaru1387 I am assuming GM has started using the improved valve cover on newly build engines as well. Is there a way I can tell my car already has the improved valve cover or if still have an old one? My car was build spring 2015. Thanks in advance !
I just replaced the valve cover like last year with a part bought from the chevy dealership and the dealership is saying that is leaking again? I re-torqued the bolts, but still looks like your beginning photo above. where can i get this part for a good price?
MrSubaru1387 I don’t have anything to check for codes but I got it replaced by one of the local shop and it runs good for few days but now again it stalls or engine shuts off randomly while car is at stop. They have checked everything but it is same thing after few days. Engine light is on. Changed the oil cap, gas cap and coil pack but same problem.
Well, first off, stop throwing parts at it. You're wasting time and money. Get the codes pulled for free at an Advance Auto Parts, Auto Zone, etc and report back.
While doin this... My valve cover didnt come off... Is there a possibility that the previous owner already fixed it before n used sealent all over the area... Nomatter how much power i use.. it doesnt come off...
Just finished! Seems to be working like it should (no more rough idling), though I think I failed to fully re-seat the ignition coil. Now when I have the key in the ignition and the systems turned on (engine still off) there is a electrical whine coming from beneath the engine cover that I've never heard it do before.
Glad you were able to get it done. Whatever whine you hear isn't the ignition coil. Could be the ABS pump running, electric throttle body, or any other number of electrical components.
PCV is in the intake at middle top hole,,,bad gm design,,,most people think it is on top of cam cover...not a bad job to do yourself,,,just alot of delicate plastic

+Javier Ramos you can pry it, but be careful not to scratch, gouge, or scar the sealing surface of the cylinder head.
Thanks.
+Javier Ramos did you get it?
I'm waiting for the weekend, also I decided to change the whole cover instead of just the gasket it wasn't that much more money to get the whole thing. Before I get the whole new cover I will try removing it when the engine is still warm it seems in my head that it would make a difference but I don't know, I'll keep you posted.
MrSubaru1387 Hi I did get it off no problem, I saw other videos that recommend lubricating the gasket before reinstallation, I didn’t see you lubricating yours, is this you should do or not? Thank you in advance.
THANK YOU
You're welcome. 👍🏻
MrSubaru1387
I am assuming GM has started using the improved valve cover on newly build engines as well.
Is there a way I can tell my car already has the improved valve cover or if still have an old one?
My car was build spring 2015.
Thanks in advance !
I don't recall an outward physical difference on them. I did see a 2014 have a failure a few weeks ago.
Not very encouraging, but thanks anyway ! :-)))
Looks like i over tightened the bolt n now its loose..did i just broke the bolt or maybe the cover is crack??not sure..
I can't say. Either you stripped the bolt, the head, or broke the bolt.
@@MrSubaru1387 the head is fine..hmmp
ruclips.net/video/2Gm2CjoLV4M/видео.html stripped valve cover bolts?
THANK U
Did just buy the Gasket or did you replace the valve cover and gasket?
Comes together.
New valve cover comes with gasket. Have to replace the valve cover when PCV fails. Made together. Good job GM.
I just replaced the valve cover like last year with a part bought from the chevy dealership and the dealership is saying that is leaking again? I re-torqued the bolts, but still looks like your beginning photo above. where can i get this part for a good price?
I bought this one straight from the GM parts counter.
I have changed the pcv valve cover but my car is still stalling randomly. Any suggestions please. It’s original cover from gm. And engine light is on.
What codes are still active?
MrSubaru1387 I don’t have anything to check for codes but I got it replaced by one of the local shop and it runs good for few days but now again it stalls or engine shuts off randomly while car is at stop. They have checked everything but it is same thing after few days. Engine light is on. Changed the oil cap, gas cap and coil pack but same problem.
Well, first off, stop throwing parts at it. You're wasting time and money. Get the codes pulled for free at an Advance Auto Parts, Auto Zone, etc and report back.
MrSubaru1387 I’m not sure if they are in Canada. Or you can suggest some reasonable code reader so that i can check myself.
Oops. Didn't realize that you weren't in the states. Actron makes a decent, cheap, code reader.
You wouldn’t know where I could find the two T30 bolts for the ignition coil would you if so thanks.
Broken them?
MrSubaru1387 no more like my dad moved them on me and now I can't find them.
Any metric bolt of the same size and thread should work. If not, GM dealership.
So Fastenal or Home Depot.
MrSubaru1387 okay thanks. Think the GM parts would too
While doin this... My valve cover didnt come off... Is there a possibility that the previous owner already fixed it before n used sealent all over the area... Nomatter how much power i use.. it doesnt come off...
Are you sure you loosened all the bolts?
MrSubaru1387 yes please... All 15... I can literally pul up and down all of those screw..
Is is ok to run a blade around??.. jus wondering which side.. top of the gasket or the bottom ..
MrSubaru1387 thanks .. it done.... I really needed to use alot of force...done.. thanks...alot
Is there RTV, silicone, around the edges?
What if oil got into the spark plugs? Do I clean before reinstall?
Usually it isn't enough to worry about.
I changed mine and now there is smoke that is coming from the engine. What could this mean?
you fucked up
What that wrench called???? I need one of those for this and other purposes.
Talking about the torque wrench?
Yes where did you buy it from?

Thanks and thanks for the video I change my valve cover today and did exactly as you did and everything work awesome thanks alot man.
You're welcome 👍
I'll trade you my 2014 Cruze for your Torque Wrench
So what if you don’t use sealant?
You'll have an oil leak.
is that 8ft pounds?
is it ok to use 'the right stuff' ?
Yes.
No gasket sealer on the replacement cover?
No. Just use the silicon gasket. Only dab RTV on the seems between the head and timing cover as shown.
Thanks for the quick reply! About to attempt this...........
You're welcome. 👍
My pcv does not give any reaction i have p0171 please help me
PCV is in the intake at middle top hole,,,bad gm design,,,most people think it is on top of cam cover...not a bad job to do yourself,,,just alot of delicate plastic
Where can I purchase the RTV?
Any auto parts store.
Whats 8 nm in ft torque wrench?
71 = 8NM
@@Vee_H. no its 5.9 ft lbs, 71 is WAY too much

How long do I have to wait since I applied the same amount of black silicone?
Go by the recommendation on the tube of silicone you used.
