- Welcome back, In today's episode I work on a 2015 chevy Cruze limited with a 1.4L turbo engine. These vehicle is great if you keep up on the maintenance. A common issue that they have is a failure with the plastic diaphragm inside of the valve cover that will eventually fail, In this Video I show you how to properly replace the Valve Cover and gasket. The process shown in the video will also apply to the following vehicles, Chevrolet Trax, Chevrolet Sonic, Cadillac ELR, Chevrolet Cruze Limited, Buick Encore. If you found this video entertaining please give me a thumbs up! I hope everyone has an awesome day and I will see you all In the next video!

I'm not exactly mechanically inclined but i did the change completely by myself by doing exactly what you did (step by step) and it came out extremely great! I appreciate it!
Awesome 👌
Ngl this comment gave me the courage to do it
Same! Gonna try and accomplish this on Friday. Little nervous but your comment gave me the courage
Shoutout to all the Chevy Cruse owners with constant valve cover leaks :)
You ain't lying dude.. damn
Sold it
I never need to give it an oil change. It oozes so much oil all I got to do is add oil 😂
It ain’t a Chevy if it ain’t leaking oil
I don’t think mine had a leak but the valve on the right was stuck open and messing up my timing. Don’t forget the change the oil feed line if you have a turbo they get clogged easy.
The only video so far that show the proper way to do it
Changed my son’s with him today. Appreciate the video and helping us with our father/son time. Thank you.
Thank you happy to help!
Great video.
I love how everyone chip in with different things you should always change while your in there.
You went above & beyond, I appreciate the video good sir.
Thank you for highlighting the difference between in. lbs of torque & ft lbs bcz I broke a bolt on the block earlier this year not knowing the difference. I’d hate for someone to make the mistake I made. I called 10 ppl & one mechanic said to use two metal picks to manually unscrew the bolt & I was astonished to see that worked. No need to weld or drill like everyone else was telling me to do. Anyway great video bro. Thank you for saving us all money!
Excellent video and thank you for clarifying gasket maker RTV and the oil neck. Solid points while breaking it down and putting it back together. God's Blessings. Jimmie
2017 Chevy Trax Thank you for your guidance I change my cover with your help, idling is much better. The miss fire is gone but little did I know. The non manifold valve o-ring was the villian which was .67 cent, which also cause the pcv on the cover to go bad. Thank you again, Just to let u know I am 58 yrs old. My son help me I took the part a loose and he did the rest.❤ Thank you
I had this issue on my 2010 Opel Astra 1.4T Enjoy Plus. I was getting scan code P0171. Diaphragm failure like you said. Replaced the cover this evening almost exactly as you've described. Fixed my problem ! Car feels better too. Seems to pull better and smoother idle. Great video.
Thanks Eric, followed your instructions and we're back in business! Thanks for a great video!
Awesome!
Great video. I just did this myself. It took about 2-3 hours. Got the valve cover for $55, gasket maker silicone for $5. WAY cheaper than the $900 the shop was going to charge me.
2 to 3 hours?! That's like a 15m job
If a shop quoted you $900 for this job then they’re a ripoff
Suggestion. My favourite part of fixing cars is the start up when it’s all done. So satisfying to hear it start up smooth 🤤
Thanks bro I had trouble taking off the wiring harness clips on the left you helped me with that, taking off the oil cap and switching it, and prying the thing off was not easy but I gave eventually. Anyways man thanks again and have a good one
Great video sir! Simple and to the point. I really appreciate it!
Thank you!
this is GREAT!!! i wish you showed the oil neck more
Doin this job on my 2015 Buick Encore, thank you very much this video was helpful. The valve cover on this one isn't even the original (you can see the Dorman logo on the top of it) so you can tell its a common problem. I decided to with an OEM valve cover from GM and it was only $50
just found out mine is done, doing it this weekend, very easy thanks for helping
thanks Glad the video helps 👍🏼
Thank you for the torque pattern and close up of the silicone placement areas
Thank you for watching!
Thanks, I gotta do this, rear calipers and going ahead and doing the PCV bypass like you have.
Thanks for the great video! Huge help just did this tonight-one comment for anyone doing this- since cover is off make sure the plastic orange timing chain guide bolts are on tight and the guide is not loose this causes horrible rattling sound. Better yet unscrew those bolts, clean and add blue thread lock and screw back in.
I wonder if that’s the random rattling I’m hearing in my Sonic. I always thought it was a belt guide or pulley
You saved me a lot of money! Thank you 🙏🏻
Got mine done thanks to watching your video. But apparently one the bolt holes were stripped and now I have to learn how to do a helicoil repair
replaced mine today thanks to videos like this, im not mechanically inclined so this is a pretty big deal for me. one thing i would add is that make sure the e bolts are completely free, even the slightest threading attached to the block will prevent the cover from coming off
Glad the video helped and I'm glad you saved yourself money by doing it yourself 👍
How many pounds of torque you put on the volve cover bolts?
Thank you
@@gaonaanthny all I did was tighten them by feel.
@@gaonaanthny 71 inch/lbs

Thank you for sharing the work video
Thank you , best video I’ve seen.
Thank you 🙏
ERICSDIYGARAGE where can I buy the gasket sealer?
@@Carlos-ms8zh I got mines at Walmart they are the cheapest compared to autozone
I honesly feel like i could change a valve cover now ! Looks simple im sure the dealership would have charged an arm and a leg for something like this 👍
maybe you can change my G20 Valve cover? 😁
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE Challenge accepted!
Great job. Thank you ✌
Thank you, I appreciate it👍
I just did that yesterday. Valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket.
While you have it open, you may want to inspect the orange chain guide as well. There have been instances where it has come loose.
good video thanks
Great and thank you!
Glad to help
Thank you, Sir!
I lack a torque wrench. I followed your pattern around the bolts three times, and it's on there nice and tight. I didn't gorilla it I don't think. I guess tomorrow I'll see.
give them 1/4 of a turn after finger tight
Great video, have you considered listing tools needed in the description? I watched once and couldn't remember the size and type of sockets and such to have on hand.

@@ERICSDIYGARAGE I was wondering the same thing... and that is what I figured, Thank you
Thank u
what should be the compression of the cruze 1.8 petrol engine??
my chevy has 11 bars for each cylinder
What’s the correct Oil Fill Cap for this car? I can’t seem to find the right I e fir my 2013
Since my Doman cover is leaking do you recommend a heavy duty gasket made out of silicone?
Question…. I bought the new gasket it came with some O-rings on either side of my housing cover has two metal O-rings the ones I got were rubber should I leave those O-rings off or replace one of those metal O-rings on the cover it looks like it’s been done before I just wanna make sure it’s done right this time
About 2 months ago, I had to replace the turbocharger on my '14 Cruze. Check engine light came on a few days ago and Classic Chevy in Grapevine is saying I need a PCV valve cover and it's gonna be around $300 to replace. Could them replacing the turbocharger have done something to now require a new PCV? I'm car-ignorant so just wondering if I'm getting ripped off. Thank you!
Do u need a torque amount of pressure when your taking it off or putting it back?
I don't have 24 hours to let the gasket cure because I have work in the morning, is there a faster curing product you recommend?
What about your intake manifold?
awesome video I'm not at all mechanically inclined but determined!
take it one step at it time you got this!
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE it is done ! and worked out awesome. Thank you
I'm done putting on the new valve cover and of course need to take the old oil neck off. I can't figure it out
Do the t30s on the coil pack also need to be at 72in lbs?
I did the same thing to my corrugated hose, used some heater hose, same hose a user used on a forum from cruzetalk but when I looked at the hose when the engine was running the vacuum made the hose pinch. It didn't do anything the engine ran fine but if I touched the hose slightly it pinched closed and the engine started running rough. Went back to the corrugated hose. Just something to look for.
Thank you for the info 👍
The oem hose is not to expensive just seems like a bad design. I hate plastic parts
Are there no oring tube seal gaskets?
Thanks to Erics DIY Garage for the tips on Chevy Trax ECO ... changing valve cover gasket hope to clear code P0299
Will this work with a 2016 model?
What brand gasket maker did you use? I have this same car and that diaphragm has failed 6 times now. GM engineers really failed on this design.
Something that is overlooked and you still see leaks after replacing valve cover. Replace the oil cap with a new one and replace the 2 o rings on the oil dipstick. The orings on these parts get hard and don't hold leaks.
No need to do all that. What's next you might as well replace the engine while you're under hood
J’ai changer ma valve cover exactement comme vous dites en vidéo mais depuis le moteur tourne pas normal et j’ai u un message qui dise « service traction contrôle »
Buick encore 2016 mine broke at 50 k was not leaking but loosing air from the round thing it has....
Do you put gasket maker on those small spots only.
Or do you also add some to the gasket?
Only on the spot shown in the video
What kind of rtv sealant is recomended?
I would use Honda rtv I have heard good things about it. But in this video I used permatex rtv just let it sit for 24 hours before driving
Jaki moment dokręcenia srub pokrywy?
Hi this might be a dumb question, but how do you fasten down the fasteners to 72 inch pounds?
A torque wrench has measurements for foot pounds and also for inch pounds
I installed a Doman vale cover and now it's leaking on the left side near the timing cover. I can't see any leaks at top near the valve cover however. Also my oil neck is missing. Do you know the part number for it? I guess I'm going to remove the Doman and replace with the GM like here
Always use oem om these they aren't much more than aftermarket. Part number should be in the video
Any recommendations with silicone? Does it matter what type is used?
Black or grey
If the check valve in the intake manifold is bad you'll just keep replacing the valve cover as the diaphram will keep failing.
What if after replacement oil starts coming from it... can that be repaired or I need a new cover?
coming from the gasket or the valve cover?
Question? So I don’t need to add the sealant all around? Just in those two spots?
Only in the spots shown
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE thanks
In case anybody wants to know the torque specs for the valve cover bolts, it’s about 6ft lbs.
What is the oil neck for and why did you let the new valve cover sit for an hour first and what happens if I dont use gasket maker on the corners?
because you need to let the gasket maker sit for 1 hour before you fasten it down. if you don't use gasket make it will leak
What did you use to scrap off the old gasket maker? I didn't know about the gasket maker last time I did my valve cover at 45k miles and now my valve cover is leaking oil into the spark plugs so I'm going to change my valve cover again this week at 80k miles. The original owner also replaced the valve cover sometime before I got the car at 25k miles.
I used a flat blade and a scotch Brite pad
There's a lil tricky plastic wire cover I see you removed it before the video it's clipped to the left side with that rubber hose , how the heck does that come off
what kind of socket is used on the valve cover bolts?
E-10
.. that looks like an aftermarket Dorman valve cover that was replaced... I've heard they don't fit well and people have to purchase OEM directly for the Cruze models.
yeah I kinda had the filling OEM is the way too go 👌🏼
Would the aluminum cover work better
Not sure never used one before
would a bad diaphragm cause my 2012 chevy cruze 1.4 LT to start over heating on idle? My fan works and i just replaced my thermostat. I hear a slight hiss by the diaphragm...but not sure how loud its supposed to be
no it would not. you probably have abad water pump or air in the coolant system
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE so a hose broke about a month ago and obviously lost some coolant. I replaced the hose and just filled up the reservoir tank. I didn’t remove the bleeder screw on the radiator…that was a month ago..just yesterday it started to overheat on idle. So would air in the cooling system show symptoms right away or could it take time…also would a bad turbo cause cooling issues. I also have a code P0599 which has been on since march2021I replaced the thermostat and the code is still there…could it be an electrical issue causing a bad reading?
@@russkaine did you use a dealership thermostat I've done a few on these and oem is the only way to go. aftermarket thermostat are not well made.it could be leaking out slowly from somewhere drops at a time air in the coolant can sometimes take a week to show overheating it really depends but I have seen vehicles run fine until they loose coolant because it evaporates from some where
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE well I’m not losing coolant..I don’t see leaks around the housing of the thermostat imma bleed the system tomorrow and try that firat
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE I think I figured out that it’s the POV in the valve cover has an air leak and after research it said that that an air leak in the system could cause over heating at idle
hey man , my car makes a hiss like every 10 seconds and idles down a bit then goes back to 1rpm then hisses again and idles down , the sound comes right by where the 1st spark plug would be I don't know if it's the seal or something else ? help thanks , BTW I can't run the car with the cover off right??
Probably the pcv diaphragm bulit into the valve cover
What size bolts are the valve cover bolts
I believe e10
I tighten them to 72 but 2 bolts broke are you sure to 72 psi
72in pounds not psi.
Hi guy: you put the RTV 90° rotated: it should CROSS the gasket line not follow!
What gasket maker did you use? Thanks
Right stuff rtv
@ERICSDIYGARAGE I ended up using permatex ultra black, they are pretty the much the same aren't they?
@BlackDomeJerome yes the difference is the time it takes to cure, but same things
I'm having issues with my valve cover.not tighten up around time chain area
Did you get a oem cover
How do you know when it needs to be replaced
you will have a hissing noise coming from the top of the valve cover you will also have a pcv code
Change my Map sensor Evap canister and spark plugs and valve cover for under $240
The local dealership here charged $260 when my fiancées mom brought there car in pastime only for it to leak again when they got the car back
How many pounds do you set the torque wrench for?
10 ft lb
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE Is 10 ft =10 pounds?
I changed the valve cover gasket and smoke came out the bottom
What do I do
Probably oil that's leaking on the exhaust double check that it's installed correctly
I'm not knocking the guy who filmed this video but if anybody performs this repair better know what you're doing. I did this repair and followed every step in this video and now oil is spewing out all over the place.
Did you get it fixed?
I have started to eat almost a whistling noise under the hood. It comes in and out when I’m on and off the pedal. I was suggested it could be a valve cover.
yeah that sounds like yout diaphragm has a leak in it
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE so the valve cover could be the issue or is it more than just that?
you can cover the diaphragm with your hand if the noise goes away then that would mean it needs replacing. go with a oem dealer valve cover the aftermarket covers are not good
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE which part is the diaphragm? Apologize for all the questions man
it built into your vavle cover you can't Replace it to fix it you need to install a new vavle cover
I think this is my problem with my 2015 Chevy Cruze. I took it to a shop to get a diagnosis. How much should I expect the shop to charge for this amount of labor? Since I’m a woman I have a fear that they’ll overcharge me 😭
I would say around 140 dollars for this repair
$162 for labor I just got quoted today. And yes, women probably do get charged "extra" none essential fees regularly.
I went to the shop and was told 444 dollars 🥴
Thank You For Watching! don't forget to hit the thumbs up button if you found this video helpful!
What type of sound was the car making before you changed the valve cover? My Cruze has been making a squawking almost chicken sounding noise and I am pretty sure it is the valve cover making the noise.
it was making a hizzing noise from the top and it was running rough
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE which sealant did you use?
I used Honda Bond
So how much torque did you use to tighten it down?
I've a big problem, the story starts with a change of the PVC valve, as showed by the scanner, it looked like an easy job, it wasn't, now lots of oil keeps coming out of the cover, I serviced 4 times the gasket job and the car is doing a lot of oil leaking, I've done it following advice from many mechanics, tutorial and manual, but the issue is persistent, car is useless, can somebody help?
Did you replace the valve cover and the gasket? The mating surface needs to be clean, however when you cleaned it did you accidently score the surface? Pay attention to where the oil is leaking from and when removing the valve cover, observe if the surface is damaged. You may have dug into the surface too deeply with a razor blade. Perhaps try some permatex gasket maker on that specific spot attempting to fill the gap, but don't forget to reclean the surface first and reapply the gasket market at the gap between the timing block lip (as shown 7:58). If that is not the case and it has continued leaking since, observe from where again, likely guessing between the timing block edge, so try black or gray permatex. I've had some JB Weld stuff that didn't do so good myself.
Chevy quoted me around 1500 for this
That valve cover that you pulled off the car was an aftermarket dorman replacement not the original GM part, meaning that’s not the first time it’s been done. As far as I know GM hasn’t changed the part at all.
yes that's correct the valve cover was replaced in the past
What if you strip head where fasteners go to tighten down the cover😫😩😭😢
Torque tool I had was garbage 🤦🏽♂️
@@CANDYSTEVEN did the bolt snap or did you mess up the threads on the head
ERICSDIYGARAGE both 🤦🏽♂️
ur screwed lol
@@bislock5617 i fixed it
400 euros in Italy cost that rocker cover.
You didn't actually show how to take off the wiring harness
just push the clips in and pull up its not very difficult
Son I snapped a fuckin screw talk about hell you best tighten them screws with your pinky finger
Should probably invest in a torque wrench.
I got 7 years out of my 2013 Eco Manual. Hate to say, but these cars are pretty much junk. I've never had to replace so many things on a car within 5 years, and all the little plastic bits break along the way
Every newer car is junk they are all plastic they don't bulid them the same
