yes, instead of having it sit, as in this video, you train it to first "bark", by knocking on a door, then after you've trained it to bark, train it to be quiet by doing the shhh motion to your lips and reward for being quiet. I would recommend teaching sit, then bark, then quiet. it will take some time. But by that time, quiet should be a piece of cake, because the dog is used to learning.

This is awesome, but I have a question, I have a seven year old english shepard, beautiful and EXTREMELY smart, do you think you can retrain a dog of this age with this method? He understands sit, lay down, shake a paw, speak, somewhat rollover, and a few other tricks but I want to retrain them so he's better at it. Could you please repond? It would be greatly helpful :)
@MSZS - get the dog sitting first, Then when the dog is in the sit position use the same technique to lure the dogs nose towards the floor and in to the lay down position. Use the clicker to mark the desired position, then replace with the command 'down'.

This is probably too late but for anyone else reading this I would use pieces of the food your dog already eats. If that dosent work try using their food before you give them their "breakfast" so they'll actually want to eat the food/"treats" when you give it to them. Or you can try small pieces of meat like boiled chicken

Apparently you also think its clever to declare a dogIsSitting variable in the scope of the entire program, thus all dogs share the same sitting state which is either false or true. This was great, I have been researching "dog obedience tip" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Jaydenley Doggy Dechlorination - (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my buddy got excellent results with it.

If you are doing training that requires some distance between you and the dog, there could be a few seconds delay between the action and the reward. For some dogs that's enough time to completely disconnect the action from the reward! It's just another way to teach; I have one dog that took to it really well, and a terrier who just couldn't give a sh*t about my clickety clack sound.

In clicker training we use cues, not commands. Cues are opportunities for reinforcement; commands are orders ("do it or else").
