I used them recently between Dover Calais and the staff were very friendly but had no knowledge whatsoever of either UK or France. Also the canteen area had been reduced to a self serve contactless takeaway and was extremely depressing. The worst thing was that the upper decks had been closed off and were all rusting badly. Truly the Ryanair of sea travel. But it was cheap at £79 return for a car and up to 7 passengers...
It surprised me you gave Itchtboots channel acknowledgement. I would not have thought you'd be into motovloggers. Noraly is an amazing person. You and Noraly are my two favorite RUclips channels. I'm giving you a gold star today for greatly exceeding my expectations.
Definitely agree that there is something so exciting about driving up the ramp onto a ferry, with the prospect of adventure ahead! Something many of us have really missed over the last few years.
Almost a funny coincidence: We will be heading with our (not so hub-nuttish) Ford Focus 3 and our Dutch caravan via Hoek van Holland towards Harwich and then on to the North and then through Scotland. Hopefully happy times 🙂 Enjoy the Netherlands, I like the people there a lot! Cheers from Germany Holger
Last time I took that ferry I had a cabin, overnight crossing. We were awoken in the morning by Bobby McFerrin singing don't worry be happy. Both comforting and disturbing at the same time.... It was over the ship's PA... Mr McFerrin didn't appear in our room.
I've been to that little chef loads, it was on the way to my Nana's house from Doncaster to Harlow and we'd stop there on the way down. Every time I drive by it reminds me of those trips with my old man.
I highly recommend the overnight ferry. A leisurely drive to Harwich for the 22:30 sailing. Food, a bed, a shower and decanted onto land at 07:30 is ideal for those longer Yurpeen journeys.
Gosh! Blast from the last Ian Travelling as we did between Newcastle and Stamford (Wittering) this was a landmark in my childhood family holidays. The only time we stopped there was in our 1979 T Reg Orange (Sweetcorn) coloured Chrysler Horizon to get petrol . Ian, being back in the road is fantastic. Have a cracking trip.
Interesting. I had been under the impression that the Harwich-Hook route had changed to commercial traffic only. At the end of August 1997 I was onboard as a foot passenger coming back to Harwich. The ship was quiet as everyone was in the lounge glued to the TV. It was continuous news on the death of Princess Diana who had just been killed in the car crash. The emotion was palpable.
Hope not! Ive got a booking for september! The Esbjerg route to Denmark went commercial a few years back (which is a massive shame for us motor homing types).
Lovely to.see Markham Moor. The roof was designed by Sam Scorer and is known as a hyperbolic paraboloid. I go with giant Pringle. I think he did one for a garage in Lincoln too. In between its life as a petrol station canopy and becoming a Little Chef, it had a stint as a Happy Eater too. They always had the best kids play parks of the roadside cafe fraternity
Good to see you out and about again. Bella is turning out to be quite the docile work horse. She must have witnessed the havoc you can wreak with an Ugga Dugga....
What a great adventure so far. I'm watching this from my farm in western New South Wales where I'm flooded in at the moment. Let's hope the water doesn't reach me. It's so good to travel along with you, Ian. It's almost like I'm sitting next to you in the van. Travelling to the Continent (or even around the UK for that matter) is completely different to anything I've experienced, even the mundane stuff like showing us around your digs and stopping for fuel at a listed Starbucks! I'm loving this!
One of the really nice features of a day crossing on the previous Stena Hollandica in the 00s was that you could hire a 'day cabin' with a huge circular window for just 20 Euros. Ideal for busy long distance reps driving back from northern Germany (like wot I was then) - a chance to have a nice nap before driving the last part of my journey, which in those days was back to Hastings, as the old Hollandica used to do the daytime service to England then (That ship was renamed the Stena Germanica in 2010 and replaced by the ship in the video here, which took its name.)
Deffo a great feeling driving up the on ramp on a ferry and through that big open mouth lol .. looking forward to my next trip across the Irish Sea to the mainland
Tap in the sink is for the kettle. So many only use a bathroom sink and most old taps won't go over the kettle entry so they give you a water container to fill. Updated rooms have those high spouts!!!
All that way to sit pondering life choices whilst being drizzled on, could have done that at home, certainly today 😂. Passed that fabulous old little Chuf building on the A1 many times, so good it was saved. Berlingo going well 👍.
Itchy Boots just crossed one of the most dangerous parts of Mexico (states of Sinaloa and Chihuahua) and heading up the Baja Peninsula now towards California and the US, the really dangerous part of her trip...sigh... Stay safe and how HubNut is it to take a French car to a Japanese car meet in a foreign country?
The number if times my eye has been caught by that building on the A1. I had no idea it was so old. It's good to see it's back in use, was looking very abandoned for years.
I remember doing that Harwich-Hoek van Holland ferry ride back when the Stena HSS (I think that one was the Stena Discovery) was still a thing. THAT was a cool boat. Sorry..."ship."
That shower cubicle reminds me of the agony booth from Star Trek TOS episode "Mirror, Mirror", which I suppose if the temperature was too high, I guess it could be one... :P
I’ve been in Austria for the last week or so and just got back. Great to catch up with this. I’ve really missed your European trips. Nearly as much as I’ve missed my Austrian trips throughout the rona!
I think the giant tap is an 'instant hot water tap' if you're not wanting a feed from the boiler. Love sailing on the longer haul ferry crossings. Such a relaxing way to travel.
I used to go to England on holiday a lot as a kid and we always took the ferry. Nothing has changed in 30 years, even if it's a more modern ship, it still looks the same. I hope they still have arcade machines, that was always the first attraction for me on holiday.
That motorway services reminds me a lot of the old Autogrill services in Italy, very similar futuristic 60s vibes! Hoek is actually fairly simple to pronounce for English-speaking people once you know that Dutch "oe" is pretty much the same as English "oo", as in "book" or "boot". In German it's an alternative spelling of ö and pronounced similar to the French "e" or "eux" with very rounded lips. Germanic languages all have their own pronunciation quirks.
Bella going along very nice indeed I love french cars had a picasso for 3 years with the same 2.0 hdi great motors cheers Ian great video looking forward to the next one already
The Harwich-Hoek van Holland ferry service is my favoured way to get to the mainland these days. It might take longer, but it's nearer to where I live (Southend) and gets me closer to where I want to be (usually a village just outside Breda) than the Dover services. Plus, Hoek van Holland is a cool little town to have a wander around and you can buy Dutch groceries from the local AH before you make the homeward crossing.
Really enjoying your Road trip Diaries, was pleased to see that I am not the only Daewoo Microwave owner, they are excellent, had mine for well over 10 years and still going strong 🤓
Oh I bet you are excited. We are off to the Netherlands and Belgium on t' Ferry from Hull and are so looking forward to it. We will be travelling by train though on the continent.
All good to see. Personally I'd have taken the A14 across, slightly further but good roads all the way. I always used to get the night ferry and have a bunk on board. Many good times followed by rude awakenings at the Hook.
If I understood correctly you are staying in Zegge, there's an Esso filling station in the north of the village which sells diesel for € 2.06 = £1.77 per litre. Stay away from motorway services which are up to 30 cents a litre more expensive. (I've posted a similar comment but it got deleted, apparently it was considered too spammy)
Great to follow your adventures Ian. Strangely it is also interesting to see your accomodation. Awaiting the 90k subs. so we can see the treat in stall. 🤔
Once you were on the top deck of the ferry my anxiety kicked in! The sea looked amazing when you were heading towards the Netherlands 🇳🇱, and your accommodation looks fantastique ! Be well, stay safe, enjoy your stay!
This gives me itchy feet... I hope to travel to the UK again soon... 🌊🚙🚢 When you were at your destination, i was just an hour long drive away in germany... ✌️
Great roadtripping adventures and jolly tales Mr HubNut, enjoy all intricate reviews of interesting objects whilst on the move! Wishing you a sunny Dutch 'holiday', nice 😎👍
It's a shame that Miss HubNut could not be there, I think she would love it there but as is life. Looking forward to your videos, as I'm living vicariously through your trip have a great trip.👍
Well done on making a mostly motorway journey interesting. I have passed through bits of the Netherland several times, but usually on my way somewhere else! Changing planes at Amsterdam airport probably doesn't count!
You may have spotted it on the way down on the A1 but on the Northbound carriageway there is a dealership called “MG Trophy Cars” and they literally have hundreds of MG TF convertibles - more than I thought was left! Might be worth a visit one day
Glad you didn't use P&O ferries after their disgraceful treatment of their staff.
Definitely agree that there is something so exciting about driving up the ramp onto a ferry, with the prospect of adventure ahead! Something many of us have really missed over the last few years.
You CAN see the sea! It's there between the land and the sky! 🤣
Que?
Almost a funny coincidence: We will be heading with our (not so hub-nuttish) Ford Focus 3 and our Dutch caravan via Hoek van Holland towards Harwich and then on to the North and then through Scotland. Hopefully happy times 🙂

Hope you enjoy the UK, best areas are Cornwall, the Lake District and the Isle of Wight in my opinion, welcome
I love the *clank* *clank* of the ramp when driving on to a ferry
This is brilliant, your roadtrips are legendary. Have a Pannenkoeken on me 👍
Or try Poffertjes
Or a Bosser Bol if you're in Den Bosch.
Or a wellmade Worstenbroodje.
Great that you featured the excellent Markham Moor petrol station building with the old Hyperbolic Paraboloid roof.
Good man 🤓 👍
So many Olympic Breakfasts at that Little Chef 😀
You are looking disgustingly healthy Ian !
So true
Last time I took that ferry I had a cabin, overnight crossing. We were awoken in the morning by Bobby McFerrin singing don't worry be happy.
Both comforting and disturbing at the same time....
It was over the ship's PA... Mr McFerrin didn't appear in our room.
We've had that too. There's a limit to how happy I'm going to be at 6 am...
Ah, 60's architecture from when motorways were excitingly modern space age concepts. My favourite is the airport-like Lancaster Forton.
Hubnut, back on the road and taking us with him. This is the good stuff 👍🏻👍🏻
I've been to that little chef loads, it was on the way to my Nana's house from Doncaster to Harlow and we'd stop there on the way down.
Every time I drive by it reminds me of those trips with my old man.
I overtook you on the A1M near Peterborough on thursday! I used to stop at markham moor little chef all the time back in the day, glad its been saved.
The biggest buzz for me was riding a 40 year old Vespa onto a cross channel ferry. Proper adventure.
I highly recommend the overnight ferry. A leisurely drive to Harwich for the 22:30 sailing. Food, a bed, a shower and decanted onto land at 07:30 is ideal for those longer Yurpeen journeys.
I'd normally do that. They had no cabins left. Overnight on the way back.
"Om nom nom says the ship" 😀 I love The Netherlands, and loved Elly's trip 3 years ago. This one's looking good so far.
That route to Hook of Holland is brilliant. The Stena Hollandica is epic - lovely rooms too for such a short crossing.
Gosh! Blast from the last Ian

Good to see the old little chef
I still miss them. All Day Breakfast or Alabama Chicken Platter? Can't decide.

THe Soy I think. Not commerical only
@@philw4625 fortunately, with a motorhome you can drive anywhere that does have a ferry line....
Funny, you are just 10 miles away from my house. Enjoy your stay, hopefully there will be another chance to meet!
Welcome in our little country, Ian!!
I certainly hope to meet you tomorrow at the Japan Classic Sunday!
If I don't: Have yourself a great day!!!!
Ah those two competing roadside eateries. Little Robber and Happy Robber
It's been many years since I was on a ferry. Oh the memories of it. Good luck with the rest of the trip.

You could turn the berlingo into a micro camper to save money on hotels and b&bs
There's a RUclips channel called Tracklife to Vanlife where a nice young couple are travelling in a converted Fiat Doblo, and doing so very cheaply.
@@cornishhh I watch them 😊👍
