- Holden Torana SL/R 5000, Premier wagon, Commodore and Calais, Ford Fairmont and utes aplenty, this show had some great Aussie weapons, plus an intriguing mix of European classics - MG, Austin, Mini, Lotus, Alfa Romeo (1750 and 75) and American heavyweights from Caddilac, Chevrolet, Chrysler and Dodge. Filmed as part of my trip around New Zealand in a Citroen BX 19GT. Quite a few other Citroens too, much to my surprise!
HubNut store and support options are located at hubnut.org - the store is still trading while I am overseas.
This is a typical kinda of car meet. New Zealand and Australia has a very active and vibrant classic car scene owing to the relatively cheap cost of car ownership and the fact that old cars last. Resto tends to be much easier out here than in the UK. Here in Perth Western Australia these kind of events are almost weekly around the city.
@tone167 My procession of fiat 124 sports' I had in Perth would probably argue that point.
Wish they were weekly here in NZ. I still buy all my parts from the U.K. as they want to much money here. Plus you can never find what you need.
Yeah the climate helps here in Perth but it does make you evaluate what constitutes a classic car. Huge numbers of cars here 20 + years old used as dailys. I think people generally consider most things pre 1980 or with a 'steel bumper' as 'classic' at the moment.
How could you pan past that fabulous Austin 16 without a single look or comment ? please don't forget us oldies!
Sorry. I really struggle with the older stuff. Just isn't in my memory banks!
Motorway light columns have frangable bases. It is a silp bolted plate which will kick out so that the column will flip clear over the roof of your car - albeit waking you up quickly in the process.
Hello Ian, I expect you have a million places to go while you're there, are you going to visit Invercargill ?, birthplace of the legendary Burt Munro.
If anyone reading this is unfamiliar with his name, please look him up, and also the film 'The World's Fastest Indian', based on Burt going to Bonneville Salt Flats and setting speed records on his old motorcycle at the age of 68, the real-life story is incredible, the film is brilliant, anyone who enjoys Hubnut videos will love it
Also in Invercargill is the Bill Richardson Transport World museum, mate of mine went there and said it is fantastic (plenty of info online)
Good luck on your travels!
He was a interesting old bloke by all accounts but there have arguably been greater contributions to the motorcycle world by Kiwis. My favourite is Rod Coleman, who died recently, in that he rode for a Works team (AJS) in what was the sports' greatest era. First Antipodean to win a TT race (1954 Jnr)...Back story was interesting too in that he gave up his medical degree to go to Europe and race
What strikes me is the variety of motors on show at the Auckland meet, really cool!
It is a very interesting melting pot, I guess part of it is that NZ doesn't really have it's own car industry. While I love them a similar british car show would be over run with Minis and MGBs.
Don't be surprised meeting so many fans. Everyone loves the Hubnut. You are sharing something amazing. Thank you.
Now that was an eclectic mix of cars, and sunshine
Cannot believe all of the classic American vehicles! The purple Dodge colour is Plum Crazy! So many interesting mix of vehicles! Well done!
If you look at the window screen on the passenger side in nz,you'll find the registration sticker. It will tell you what model, year even what month and year it was brought in to the country 👍
What surprised me most was the number of American cars on display. What interests me the most, though, are the rarer Japanese cars and the locally-produced cars that are rarely seen outside Australia and New Zealand. I laughed when you walked right by the Plymouth Satellite to make a bee-line for the tired "more doors are more fun" Escort. Perfect.
Glad you got to see Caffeine and Classics at least once, Ian. I make the trip over to the North Shore from the southern end of Auckland and had planned to go that day, but woke up too late, else I would have been with the two Heralds or chatting with the owner of the Austin 3-litres (he's a mate of mine too :) ) FI214 is his car and CTZ396 belongs to his wife. Both are lovely people and the 3-litres absolutely beautiful to drive - very smooth and comfortable and surprisingly agile through the corners (that's the cars, not the owners!).
Wow! loved this post. Great to see that New Zealand has such a diverse selection of classics from everywhere.
Nice to see the little Fairlady on show. I owned a 2000 Sports for a couple of years in the early 70's before a good mate borrowed it and put it into a lamppost, but that's a story for another time.
Great to see the video Ian. Wishing you well for your trip. This meeting is held the last Sunday of each month. The best free car show in NZ.
It's quite interesting to see you discover cars that, as an Australian, have just been part of the landscape. That Group A Commodore bodykit was factory, an attempt to get some aerodynamics into the VL body, based as it was on a 70s Opel. It was nicknamed the "batmobile" and was actually slower down conrod straight at Bathurst, where the drag is more important that the downforce! I agree with the choice of a VL. If you can find a good one (they are 33 years old!) it might make a good choice for your Australian adventure. I had the Skyline with the same motor at the time. I think that Challenger's colour is "Plum Crazy" What a meeting! It's almost worth heading across the ditch!
7:25 is Ford Falcon XA Coupe. Licence plate gives it away too.
Those minis around 9:50 with the white on black licence plates were the standard until 1987 when they went with the black on white (starting with NA in the alphabet). Now they run with three letters. I used to know all the car years just by the first two letters. Dad's Mk II Zephyr was AE (1962), Mum's mini was DL ('67), my Viva was GK ('74). Dad's Datsun ute JF ('79), my Nissan Sunny LG ('84), mate's Mazda 626 ML ('86).
Hah, real anorak!
Hence the Cortina front end.
You're right. Someone has stuck a cortina front grill on the XA - interesting.
@@Seiskid Those front side lights look Cortina too.
@@Seiskid Is the 'Skyline' a Ford too - felt so from the front end, steering wheel and dash.
Gentle Persuader a real swandri
now that's what you call a nice Sunday morning car event.. and lovely to see a mk1 escort
very impressed with the car recognition it took me longer way longer than 4 days in Australia to get that sort of information off the top of my head! Hub Nut Global Not Local!
Great video. It's amazing how similar a cars & coffee in New Zealand is to one here in the U.S. Though at one point you let an awesome '92-'96 Ford Bronco pass by you without mentioning it.
Wow tarmac overload! what an eclectic mix of the great and the good, I am in heaven from first to last thank you Ian for taking us along with you 👍 Alan
Wonderful weather, wonderful place, wonderful show. That lovely Austin A50 did it for me. Many thanks Ian and good luck on your further adventures.
Enjoyed the commentary
Your idea of globalization is working well for your fans. Nice show video.

Oh my, I tell you I may have the chance of going to Japan Next year. So far of what I have seen of New Zealand From your Wonderful Videos It almost makes me want to go there next, This Car Event alone would of been right up my street. Thanks for sharing it on the World Wide Net and taking the time to film it all for us to view at our Plesure. Amazed how diverse it was and also Variety of cars that attended.
That's one helluva way to launch your New Zealand car meets! Some fabulous cars there, but I definitely have a soft spot for that Austin A50.
This is looking good for us Hubnutters. First Ian gets a BX then goes to a great meet with some wonderful cars. Oh yes, this is going to be good.
A great display of cars.Obviously a thriving classic scene in New Zealand😎👍!
The bx is an absolutely perfect travel companion, when it works, obviously 😉💪
No wonder NZ is considered the place to live. Seriously green with envy ! Keep em coming Ian.
Excellent! So glad to see the classic "scene" is so buzzing and so eclectic. props to new zealand and of course our Man in the mix Mr hubnut! just what i needed this lunchtime.
NZers are car mad! I'm one of them. There are many 'meets' and 'hops' all over the country all year round. Certainly always an eclectic mix. Enjoy your travels.
Hi Ian, lovely to meet you yesterday and glad Auckland put on a good show of Citroens for you! If I had got there earlier I could have parked my C6 with the other Frenchies, but had to park next to a Ferrari 328 instead, oh the shame!
I was surprised at how many American cars, considering most were wrong hand drive. It's my understanding that the American brands had a surprising about of autonomy when managing their brands. Fun video to watch.
What an incredible array of world motoring! Favourite vehicle: the A50 pickup.
The variety of vehicles there is mind blowing 🤯 some amazing machines!
I am loving your reaction to Auckland! My city.
“Wow!” That was a great meet by the lookslike! What a fine encounter with machines that command of all the Marvel! Even a Tipo! Fond memories of my own. Nice to see the Citroëns of course; no matter where we go, we like to see them! It’s not the weather for French electrics! With the arseache iron well and truly taken to them, ASAP, comforture, aught then be the watchword!
WOW what a fantastically varied meet, everything quality, no rubbish. Wish we had more meets and shows like that here!
You walked right past my favourite car though. Can you guess which one? No? ... The 1957 Bel Air!
Thanks Ian very interesting to see the cars and having OCD noticed the wheels on one car being from a later model with center caps keep up the good work best wishes Tony
You see a lot of American Cars in NZ...they hold Americano in March every year...celebrating all things on wheels American style. I loved it. Makes you wonder where they all come from.
More doors are more fun. I so agree. I tend to buy medium sized five door hatchbacks. Like BX'es. It's my favourite kind of car.
Properly nice show!
17:40 Actually those short videos you did some time ago at a car show in the UK were amazing. Slap that phone on your window, it's worth it!
Happy to see you're enjoying yourself!
SH1, Bugger was our Toyota HiLux ad well worth looking up, 7m.27s early 70s Ford Falcon XB coupe 351 Cleveland V8?? ( Alan Moffat raced them with great success, nowadays that car would command a very handsome price $100 000++ ) Nice Torana $250 000++, the Commodores from ATCC racing, the silver one a VL? body kit by Tom Walkinshaw ( ashtray on wheels 😂 )
Dear Hubnut Ian, I will really miss your walk around at the NEC this year, but this and many more like it will more than make up for it!
It's a little surreal seeing New Zealand roads and scenery on HubNut but so very cool at the same time. A great line up of cars at the Auckland meet and would like to get up there at some stage to go along. Recognised the Austin A55 ute instantly as I know the owner of it ☺ I nearly brought an Austin 3 Litre some years ago, they're lovely to drive so look forward to seeing you do a future video review on that.😎
It is so strange seeing you driving around NZ, it is taking me a bit of getting used to. You too now doubt :-) There were so many interesting cars at the show and the Kiwi's sure love their American iron but the look of it. A Citroen BX 16valve ran in the 1995 Production Car 12 Hour race at Eastern Creek Raceway outside Sydney. Very unfortunately, It suffered some sort of brake failure and had a spectacular entry to the pits. It was one of the more interesting cars competing. Loved the pre-Farina Austin (of course). Cheers
What a fantastic start to the tour Ian, loads of american muscle and a good selection of european metal.
Loved the minis, holdens and the 120y as had an aussie inport with said louvre grill myself in the 80's.
Enjoying the drive too touring NZ with you.
Thank you Ian.
What a variety! I had no idea there would be such a diverse range of cars in NZ.
Also, you seem to be having such a good time. Most of all, enjoy it!
i had a 1970 challenger rt in that purple in high school. shows what a good job, and no bills could get you in the 80's.
Delighted you are finding your feet. Hope you continue to have fun in NZ.
What a truly cosmopolitan collection that was, and a delight to see.
Typical for us.
What a way to start your journey! Cracking selection of cars. As a fan of muscle cars, it's great to see so many American & Australian examples. Hopefully you'll get to do some videos of the local muscle whilst your there (like the gorgeous blue 70's Falcon that you captured driving in) :)
What a fantastic collection of auto nirvana.... so envious!
What a great video Ian,New Zealand looks a nice place, the car show was a nice meet up,with some elegant machinery on show, the Minis were so awesome especially that yellow one.👍
Congratulations Ian on pulling this trip off ! Enjoy yourself
Hubster delivers, as always! NZ looks gorgeously beautiful. Like the UK, in many ways.
The VL Group A SS came with the body kit as standard. Its an homologation special for group A touring cars like the rs500 and BMW M3. Also know as the 'Walkinshaw" as the HSV operation was run by Tom Walkinshaw. The Lonsdale gets its name from the old Mitsubishi engine plant in Australia.
Only came in that colour too...green.
2 Austin 3 litres?! 30 in New Zealand? I never knew that many survived - look forward to the test video. All good stuff as always! 👍🏻
They're ours.!! We have his and hers. Mines the cherry, hubby's is the blackberry.
@@louisavevers9709 Great to see you even made a guest appearance on Ian Seabrook's video 😊👍.
@@roversteve8772 I know! John was pleased too! 😁
MGBetts1 British Car Museum Hawke’s Bay,he s got a couple.500 British cars.
Love it. Quick glance at a Skyline GTR, but more excited about the Starlet across from it. That's why this channel is so great.
Another fabulous video Ian. A mnemonic for the A40 Devon vs Dorset is that as a kitchenette is a lesser kitchen, the Dorset has lesser (ok, fewer) doors than the Devon ;)
Thanks for showing all those cars. We lost so much when Holden and Ford shutdown manufacturing.
the 1800 was the Landcrab and the 3 Litre was known as the Land Lobster and the 1100 was the Land Crayfish :)
What a great mix of cars it good to estate car at a car show with all the sports car and custom cars keep up the good work.
No Renault or Peugeot but there were Citroëns. No Volvo's, but there was at least one Saab. Apparently they appreciate quirkiness in NZ. Good times lay ahead for you Ian! :)
We do appreciate quirkiness until it's time to find parts 😂
Great video! That car meet was fantastic too! Its great following your adventures. NZ looks like my sort of place
Great insight into NZ car meet. Amazing variety of awesome cars. Fantastic weather.. I'm jealous!
Oh yes, the VL 3litre Commodores were excellent. That lovely Nissan six was such a lovely engine, a huge improvement over the Holden 6. Enjoy your time up north.
I was at the Smales farm meet on Sunday, managed to get a picture of myself with your BX for posterity. Interesting point I to went to Solihull college at about the same time. Glad your enjoying New Zealand, not sure how your getting up north but my tip would be on your way back down when you get to Puhoi, get off the main SH1 just before the tunnel and follow the coast road around through Waiwera and Orewa as it's stunning and you can get back on SH1 at Silverdale, it's a small diversion, but worth it.
Did you go to Blossomfield Road as well? I did my Mechanical Engineering BTEC there!
I did. BTEC Nat Dip in Engineering. I didn't complete. It is when I discovered than I'm no engineer!
@@HubNut I enjoyed my time there, I liked messing around in the workshop full of lathes, millers and shapers. Next to the workshop was a long corridor with windows across one side and all the lockers where we used to meet up, I remember it well.
Fantastic get to see NZ and great cars oh and of course hubnut, good times.
What a superb car show and another great video.
Nice show review! And, I also note the presence of much U.S. iron there, which was a very rare sight when I lived in Oz, ca. 1974--76. And, finally! A Fairlady Roadster! That red Commodore did look like a very "HubNut" vehicle!
Love the eclectic mix of cars , plenty of Detroit iron too. Enjoy your trip.
What a brilliant way to spend a Sunday, that was a really eclectic mix of cars, something for everyone.
What a wonderful gathering . I was impressed by the Hot Rods no end !
7:25 XA series Ford Falcon coupe. 12:13 TWR Tom Walkinshaw Racing Group A VL series Holden Commodore. Yes, the body kit is factory. Wind tunnel tested. This example looks stock: maybe slightly lowered. 16:10 HQ series Holden Kingswood wagon. My first car 37 years ago.
Wow .... I'm so jealous although I've been to NZ and Oz 11 times , it's such a nice place ! ..... Keep em coming Ian , totally excellent !!
My god the little Fiat Abarth 1000 is so beautiful. That could be my favourite ever.. or in fact any 60s Italian coupe come to think of it... And HubNut goes over to the Commodore GTS to proclaim that that could be his.
I just love this channel.
Got strangely excited to see a Repco store 5 seconds into a Hubnut video! Nice to see a bit of a mix of cars at that show. You'll have to track down a "Dream" VL Commodore for OZ, although they are getting quite expensive now!
I think NZ and Australia are interesting countrys for car nerds and enthusiasts.
There's so wide variety of cars: US cars, JDM cars, Holdens, Aussie Fords, European cars and last, but not least British cars with bigger engines. 😎
Great selection and variety of cars, and dear god please test drive one of those Austin 3 litre gems.
Even when amazingly you are amongst cars you dont recognise, you still manage to make the video interesting! No wonder you have 50k subscribers! The magic of Hubnut!
That white Holden Commodore reminded me of the gold 1983 Vauxhall Carlton I used to own (A116 RFE). That's one car I'd have again in a heartbeat
Glad to see you are driving on the correct side of the road, like in Britain!
The Holden VL (Commodore) SS (ie the blue one with the "bonkers" body kit), that was actually sold with that body kit as an option... Those were the peak eras for those cars... Sadly Holden only exists as dealerships only...
And don't forget Australians invented the "ute"
Thanks again your videos and look forward to see what you get up to in the trip!
it was the Walkinshaw SS Commodore - they had to sell enough of them for them to be homologated so that they could compete in the Group A motorsport events like Bathurst.
well done with 50k subs . we all love your travels and triangle of Doom/pantograph spotting. A fine bunch of motors !!
You have some lovely driving to come Ian, esp. away from the cities. We toured S.Island last March, like Wales on steroids. Beware oversize loads, they use all the road. All of it. You see them coming a mile off, you need to get in the verge, sharpish.
Lovely driving though, enjoy and hope the BX stays good.
Brilliant classic meet.
This trip is gonna go down in history. Looovely stuff mixed with good times, bad hair and some non-working car thingies because HubNut.
Really a diverse lot of cars at the meet. Bodes well for future test drive videos.
Have to say, great video. And this was a weekend when lots of people were away!! ☺
Nice video. The car at 7:27 is an Aussie built early 70's XA Falcon Coupe, with XB bonnet scoops. AKA: The Mad Max car.
cool as over the shore at the car park up nice ,off to matakana nice place the lamb pies are great . auckland traffic is a nightmare but better out in the country .enjoy
What a great show. Thanks for taking us along!
Loving the fact that at 3.27, my name is on the side of a building by the motorway 😆
First of all: after all travel exhaustion it is good to see Hubnut back in full fashion - and with a great ride for this adventure. Now, what a fantastic variety of cars! My favourites so far are the three litres and the car at 12:48 - what looks to me like a Holden Statesman Deville (HJ/HX/HZ Series?). And I like this car, because it came in so many interesting variations - with one exceptionably weird one. The Mazda Roadpacer AP was Mazdas take on a large Anti-Pollution vehicle (hence the AP badsge) with an 1.3-liter 13B Wankel engine! It had the Statesman front end, but the rear taken from the Holden Kingswood (same Platform of course). Well, I also like the Holden Commodre VL SS Group A on 12:16 - yet it could need some more cowbell, I mean spoiler. Cheers, Benni
The side trims (if they are original) suggest HZ. But it's hard to tell.
Awesome video with excellent content, wow some of them cars I’d kill for
What a fantastic range of cars and a beautiful country Enjoy your trip. Not jealous... Much!
I'm enjoying the antipodean adventure Ian. Nice work my man! Some great motors there by the looks of things. My ears really pricked up at "Fiat Tipo". I must be nearly as bad as you! Seriously, enjoy yourself out there while it's damp and grey back here.
"...slightly more dog going on in this BX..." 😂😂😂
A bit close to the bone that comment !
Great stuff!
It’d never do to have a hubnut vehicle without issues but at least the BX only has seemingly minor ones!
That looked like a great car meet👍👍👍
THAT brown Taunus, marvellous!
What an adorable little doggy! He seemed very happy to see your sister car to his
I was desperately looking round for an old campervan; suffice to say that the rest didn't disappoint - in particular, that 120Y Sunny! 😍
