The entire record is a masterpiece; no filler; arguably his best single record as a whole, though other albums have MANDATORY songs (the first album has "Fortress Around Your Heart").
A Masters’ Masterpiece!!
Concur. I rank this album alongside The Joshua Tree as the best of their generation. Between this track, Fragile, Little Wing (exceptionally underrated Hendrix cover), They Dance Alone…it epitomized masterful music making. He and Gabriel were brilliant.
I remember being in Sam Goody in NYC in 1987 when this album was released. They played this song while I was shopping and it bought instantly. My favorite album. Englishman in NY....Sister Moon...
Sting just doesn’t do “filler” ❤️
@@danbev9313 My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun ! I kept this verse around my heart my entire life (and it actually opened me the path to Shakespeare...)
This is one of Sting's best albums. Andy Summers plays guitar on this song.
It’s interesting watching younger generations listening to music I grew up with for the first time. This is why we stand by the music of our generation.
Sting’s voice and lyrics are mesmerizing, sensual and intelligent. How did any of his students or female colleagues get anything done when he was a teacher.
Sting is a master lyricist ❤️
Some things have double meanings but if you look at the lyrics of "I Hung My Head" you will find triple meanings. Also Sting talked about that with the title of his album Mercury Falling.
The Lyrical Lord.... Sting is up there with the best.
I can't imagine hearing Sting songs for the first time!! This won album of the year at the UK Brit awards 1988
This whole album is a joy to experience.
The arrangements and engineering on Nothing Like The Sun are phenomenal
Sting is extremely versatile and a great song writer and composer. Before the Police, he taught nine and ten year olds English, music and soccer in a Catholic school in the U.K. Give a listen to Seven Days, Don’t Stand Too Close To Me (inspired by his earlier teaching) and If I Ever Lose Faith In You. His live albums are incredible! Enjoy!
Magic is what it is. I agree with everything you two said.
Sting has been a favorite of mine since I was a little girl. Even then I was aware of how unique and talented he is as a singer and composer. I’ve seen him now a few times in concert, and he does NOT disappoint! His voice is so unique too, very sensual and calming.
Great lyric, "Sink like a stone that's been thrown in the ocean, my logic is drowned in a sea of emotion"
Sting. His voice, his composition. Wow🤗. If you two ever get the chance to see him in concert do! He is unreal 😌. 💙 Watching your reactions is a gift!
I love that you did Sting !!! One of my all time favorites. REQUEST: Fields of Gold.
There is a killer version of Little Wing on this album with a good guitar solo.
Hiram Bullock I believe.
High quality song writing from a genius songwriter, no more to be said.
That whole album is pretty amazing.
If you want to see something really cool with Sting and the top notch players he got to play with him, check out the documentary Bring On The Night. It shows Sing putting together his first solo album and preparing for their first live performances. It's really amazing musicianship and a cool look into the process of developing these songs.
The jazz version of "Meet the Flintstones" alone makes it worth watching. :-)
I second this.. watched it multiple times. Just awesome
Definitely watch Bring On The Night! It makes you appreciate the music so much more than you think is possible.
This my fav album from Sting as a soloist and you're correct all personnel in this project are session musicians. Sting is a multi-instrumentalist, good composer and songwriter, great lyricist and music arranger a true master in his own right. This album a is masterpiece.
Still one of the best albums ever written! Sting never panders thats for sure, choice of musicians is impeccable.
I bought this album when it was first released...loved it instantly...used to go jogging with this cassette in my tape player....haven’t heard for over twenty years...my heart begins racing as I fall in love with it again....this is great....btw. I also listened to Peter Gabriel’s So album during this time...really brings me back...thanks...
One of the things I love about Sting is that he surrounds himself with amazingly talented musicians. I would strongly recommend that you watch the documentary film Dream of the Blue Turtles, which chronicles him assembling the team for his first "solo" album.
If you DO react to Fragile I recommend the live performance of Stevie Wonder with Sting. It's so good Sting just shakes his head like OMG how good is Stevie...
The entire album is his crowning achievement in my mind. It does not get much better. This has always been my favorite song since it’s release. I love all the layers of the instruments and lyrics. There is so much to take in. Thanks for all you do. I love your channel
One of my first memories as a child was hearing ghost in the machine. Huge follower of Stings solo albums. So many talented players too. Harlem globetrotters of musicians. Had some deep stuff in this Era. He's a master composer and writer.
This song pierces my heart.
That whole album is really great.
Nothing Like The Sun was a tribute to his mother, The Soul Cages was a tribute to his father.
Nothing Like the Sun is one of my favorite albums
Y’all should check out “The Wild Wild Sea” from Soul Cages. The way they recorded and played the instruments makes you feel like you are on a ship in the ocean.
The whole THE SOUL CAGES album (1991) is a masterpiece, unfortunately so underated!
When the angels fall is awesome too , that whole album is by far my favorite of all time
I watched a documentary about Sting. A medical doctor ran some tests on Sting’s brain waves and found him to have unique patterns that enable him to hear much more in the sound spectrum than we average mortals. One of my all time favourite artists.😍
The intricacies, creativity, and literature references, are so emblematic of quality 80's music. It's so much better than the junk produced today.
Sting is an ADDICTION
Sting is a Master Storyteller! Every one of his songs tells a story. ❤
Sting has such a distinguished voice, you always recognize it. Even when (what he did a lot) sings just the backing vocals
Sting is incredible. I played the hell out of this album. Beautiful lyrics, arrangements, voice...FACE. My love. Listen to the whole album. Masterpiece.
thanks you guys...it's so so cool to see two people who truly get it and appreciate top quality tunes
Another excellent Sting album is The Dream of the Blue Turtles. There's a track on it called "Shadows In The Rain". It is a reimagined (and jazzier take) on a Police song that appeared on their Zenyatta Mondatta album from 1980. I think it might be fun for you to review the original Police version and then follow that immediately with Sting's solo version from 1985 to see how it evolved and totally changed.
On a completely separate note - I'd also love to hear you review a song called Aqua Marine from Santana's Marathon album (released in 1979). It's NOT one of their well know radio hits and probably no one else will think to request it - but it's a great tune and right up your alley.
Now Dream of the Blue Turles was my chocolate box. 🍫 it is so delish. Listened to the album over and over. I'm so glad Steward Copeland had some parts.
Of course to me Steward Copeland is a God like Drummer. Absolute 💯
They Dance Alone is an Awesome tune! Best song on the CD for my money.
Ugh!!!! It just does not get any better than this. The melody the words the voice is just outstanding💗
How did I miss this reaction! So glad it popped up on my feed today. Now...to go find more Sting!
"Fortress Around Your Heart" is a great track from Sting.
There is only one Sting ! Next time around try the songs Fragile and Fields Of Gold ! If they don't cut through to your heart you can't possibly have one. Love to watch you react and enjoy truly great music !
It's not by chance that people say that The Police led the second british invasion. The music is top, top, top tier.
King Of Pain, Wrapped Around your finger, Shape of my heart...just to start. Like the Beatles, Sting and The Police have hit, after hit.
shape of my heart one of the best songs ever, still haunts me everyday, especially Dominic Millers guitar!
Oh for sure. I do think that the police outshines the Beatles in many different ways. Not saying the Beatles aren't good. I just believe the police are on their own level.
We work the black seam is another underrated Sting song. I don't like his later albums that much but his earlier albums are something!
Thanks for your support and stay tuned for more Sting to come! :) - Lex
One of my faves also.
Thats always been a fave of mine. Also Shape of my Heart for 10 Sumners Tales.
I dont know of anyone that does music this well today. When you’re hearing each instruments intricacies, just beautiful. Two other bands that can’t miss are Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. You don’t listen to Pink Floyd, you experience Pink Floyd. Check out their song Comfortably Numb, it’ll take you to another world.
We have been longtime Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin fans:) That's why you don't see any reactions of them on this channel. We know basically everything except the very early Pink Floyd albums. Comfortably Numb has to be one of my all-time favorite guitar solos. We saw Get the led out and Brit Floyd ( Two amazing cover bands ) Pink Floyd is actually a band that brought us together since we both loved the band and started to hang out more since we both had the same taste in music. Thanks so much for the recommendation!
one of the best songs and lyrics of the eighties! a serious 80s song ". ; )
Music that stands the test of time. I wonder if that isn’t different from the fact that music is timeless. This song is so layered and rich. You both were spot on with what you noticed, appreciated, and enjoyed about the track. Listen more than once so you will also notice and be amazed by Sting’s lyrics, as rich as the music itself.
This is one of two Sting albums I got the day they were released, the other being The Soul Cages which, in my opinion, is even better than Nothing Like The Sun. In the mid 80'ties he released an excellent double live album, Bring On The Night, containing songs from his first solo album and The Police catalogue - could be worth your while, if you dig live albums?!? ...
The SOUL CAGES is a jewel! Unfortunately not as famous as Nothing Like The Sun.
The soul cages is the album he wrote when his father died. If you listen to it whit that thought it gives a whole new meaning
I saw Sting and The Police in concert in 2008. Amazing. Sting is the coolest guy on earth. I have the Nothing Like the Sun CD
Thanks for that. I'm so glad you have discovered Sting. He has inspired me no end over the years. I encourage you to check out his song I Burn for You. I'ts just out of this world!! Especially the live version.
“sink like a stone that’s been thrown in the ocean, my logic is drowned in a sea of emotion”. One of the best lines in music.
I'm so glad that you guys loved this song. It's just so good!!!!
Just love Sting's voice.
From my favorite Sting album, Nothing Like The Sun. 😎
The soul of sting himself is expressed in this song.
He has been doing some songs recently with Shaggy that are amazing, It's like his old music moshed with some newer songs. if you look for it, there is one song cut out of a Tiny Desk Concert called Shape of My Heart, mashed with Lucid Dreams that is just gorgeous! Check it! You won;t be sorry! The entire concert is awesome as so many Tiny Desk Concerts are!
I’m sorry to catch this beautiful review two years later. This Album is A Gem for everyone who loves high quality Musicianship! And Sound 😮This album Gives me the Chills every time! Even in 2023…… ♾️
This so literally the second reaction we aver made.
PAUL SIMON's 1986 "GRACELAND" album is a MUST for the two of you ~!!!
Shape of My Heart....haunting, beautiful must listen
Sting - "I was Brought to my Senses",
"Heavy Cloud, No Rain" etc.
A reaction video to Stings "Moon Over Bourbon Street" please! NO ONE has posted a reaction video to that song. A song inspired by Anne Rice book "Interview with a Vampire".
This sounds great; we'll definitely add it to the list! Thanks for your support! :) - Lex
Was it? That's funny I was an "Interview" fan in High school and when this song came out, I always pictured it as one of either Louis or Lestat, but never had confirmation of that... good to know that is what Sting was going for..
Sting is from Wallsend (where Hadrian’s wall finished - Roman Emperor) in the north east of England, just the other side of the River Tyne from where my dad was from in Jarrow. In that part of the world they are known as Geordies - I have no idea why! I’ll have to look it up. I think Sting used some jazz musicians like Courtney Pine on saxophone, whom I’ve seen in his own right quite a few times. He has also played with double bass player Christian McBride.
In 1987, I was 18 years old when this came out and I was in college. I still have this album (record) and remember playing it a lot back in the day! A track I would highly recommend is "Little Wing" which is a cover of a Jimmie Hendrix song. Hiram Bullock does the lead guitar and it will give you chills.... ! If you love your guitar, you will love the solo on that track!! : - ) You guys are great! Glad I found you!
. . . Nothing Like The Sun is a wonderful album.
Happy New Year. Beautiful to hear this great song again. Sting was at the top of his game around this time. You need to hear ‘Fortress around your heart’, it’s stunning. Thanks for your reaction.
Top Notch is the word!!
Modern people discovering quality 😲
- so of the profundity with EveRy beAtING within the Heart when as listening...
Andy summers of the police played the guitar in this song- the whole album was masterpiece…
Do more Sting. Seriously. He's so good. Listen to Fragile. Listen to Seven Days. Try A Thousand Years or The Shape of My Heart. Just listen.
Andy Summers plays on this track and Lazarus heart
This is song is one of my most favorite songs in the universe❤ the emotion is ridiculous
This song always makes me choke up
Memories
Straight to my heart is good too
PG and Sting did a concert together about a decade ago. You both have been listening to my all time favorite bands and music. Have you ever listened to San Jacinto by PG? Subdivisions by Rush? A Man with a Child in his Arms but Kate Bush? I can go on, and know you have lots of supportive listeners. But trust me on these….
So much great Sting music (the man can do no wrong in my ears)! One of his best, I my opinion, is Dessert Rose.
For an artist as well known as Sting, I actually think he is underrated as a lyricist and a musical arranger. His songs are beautifully crafted and he knows how to make a good sound. His early solo albums are his best work - Dream of the Blue Turtles, Nothing Like The Sun, The Soul Cages and Ten Summoner's Tales are all great. In my opinion, he went downhill after that - although his recent musical The Last Ship also has some great songs on there. I love the Police as well and songs like I Can't Stand Losing You, The Bed's Too Big Without You and King of Pain are cool songs, but Sting as a solo artist has made more interesting and varied music. If I were to recommend just one song from each of his solo albums that you should react to, I would say check out the following:
Moon Over Bourbon Street from Dream Of the Blue Turtles / Straight To My Heart from Nothing Like The Sun / Why Should I Cry For You from The Soul Cages / Love Is Stronger Than Justice from Ten Summoner's Tales / I Was Brought To My Senses from Mercury Falling / Fill Her Up from Brand New Day / The Book of My Life from Sacred Love / title track from the The Last Ship. These songs prove his range and versatility as a musician. Enjoy !
@nickandlex I have been a fan of Sting since now over 23 years and I am never gonna get tired enough to listen to his songs. His songs have been an inspiration, a guidance, a relief at different times of my life but in a way or another he has always been here.
I had the pleasure of seeing him live multiple times and funny enough that you mention PG.. I have been to the Rock Paper Scissors Tour in New York and I ll suggest you listen to some of videos are around on RUclips from that tour.. It was epic.
I also suggest you read the books Sting wrote.. They are all amazing including Broken Music.
More songs to listen and not so super commonly known? A thousand years, Send your love, The Language of Birds, Valparaiso, I burn for you
The production you marvel at is the work of Hugh Padham. He's responsible for much of the best music from the 80s, including Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins--Padham helped develop the "gated" drum effect on "In the Air Tonight"--Tears for Fears, XTC, Hall and Oates, Elton John, and much more. His work is a rabbit hole you dive into.
sting /the police is great for their style of everything just amazing
Omar Hakin, Kenny Kirkland, Mark Knolpher, Eric Clapton, Hiram Billock, Annie Lennox - Ruben Blades, Branford Marsalis, Andy Summers..thats all!
I really enjoy seeing younguns discovering the best music of my generation. It's heartwarming. Might I suggest reacting to some George Michael, 'Cowboys and Angels'. You will melt Lex.
Aww so glad you’re enjoying our videos. Thanks for the suggestion and for thinking of me. :) - Lex
His reaction is similar to mine when I first heard it. Such An amazing piece
Nothing like the sun was the first album recorded in DDD. This song is my favorite. Never bored with. Best for you from France
Another good reaction, love to see later generations enjoying the music that blew me away back when. If you haven't heard (what are the odds, its a huge hit) "We'll Be Together" by Sting, its another good one, and the video is a treat as well. Sting plays 2 parts and his wife is in it as well.
I've just found you guys! It's so lovely to see youngsters being brought joy by the same songs that brought me the same me all those years ago. I'm 65. These songs and many others have been the soundtrack to my life. I fell in love to Joni Mitchell's COURT AND SPARK in the early 70s. I fell in love with someone else to Sting's BE STILL MY BEATING HEART and Joni's COYOTE in the 80s. Listening to them again and seeing your reactions (especially Nick's tears) makes me so happy. I thought this music...which meant so much to me and still does... would be considered passe by today's generation. Thank you for your lovely channel and thank goodness there are some young folks out there with good taste!!! Ok...off to watch you react to another master...Peter Gabriel xx
What a band he had. Kinda of like what Joni did with the Shadows and Light tour. These cats can play anything.
His old band mate Andy Summers plays guitar on this track. Excellent track!
You can tell when Lex is into the music, because she rarely glances over at Nick. Ha!
For a latter day Sting, would like to see you react to 'And Yet' or 'I Love Her but she Loves Someone Else', from The Last Ship. It became my favourite Sting album. By the way, you mentioned Fragile at the beginning - that song still makes me weep!
GREAT REACTION, so genuine, THANKS for reacting to this song by Sting! I hope you continue exploring and hopefully reacting to his old songs (Why Should I Cry For You, Mad About You...)
That whole album is great along with every other Sting solo works he’s made over the years.
Love Sting!!! Go down that rabbit hole asap!!-- sigh
I still remember when this came out. I took the cassette to the electronics store when I picked out my first stereo so I knew which one it sounded best on.
I bought this vinyl record in 1988 at 19 and I was feeling this! Hearing it again now, it has a completely different meaning to me when I listen with my life experiences mixed in. Time to put that album back on. It’s been awhile, old friend. ❤️
One of the all-time greats. I saw Sting 1x and the police 3x years ago.
If you liked Steely Dan you'll like Sting. High production quality, and there's a space for every instrument in the mix and in time. And his voice is as iconic as Fagan's. That album is a masterpiece. You would also really like Sade if you don't already.
When you two were just bopping with the intro at the end, I was struck by how much you looked like teenagers in someone's basement. It brought me back to my childhood days in the 70s.
That's quite the rabbit hole you've found for yourselves. I think you'll both love Fields of Gold from his 1993 album Ten Summoner's Tales. I certainly do.
The whole album is incredible
