Spring has arrived on the farm plus why the claim farmers only have 30-40 harvests left is a myth

  • After a cold spell of weather in February, March brings more spring like weather and the crops are starting to move again. I also take a look at a new report debunking Micheal Gove's claim UK farmers have depleted their soils to the point where we've only got 30-40 harvests left. Really?!

      Back in the 1950s we were taught about plant growth at school, plus dad the son of a farmer was a keen gardener so I'd tag along with him. School holidays were often spent on my uncles farm in N Wales, I was even kept in after school for lying in an essay of what I'd done over the holiday. Dad was waiting for me at the gate and when I didn't show he came looking and went to the headmaster. A runner brought the teacher and me to his office. Where in no uncertain terms for father backed my essay up and got the teacher to apologize to me.
      Moral of the story don't mess with farmers son's. Or Harry cos they have the facts.

    Michael Gove is a Whitehall Farmer, Livestock, he's in the verbal fertiliser business. Very few politicians, even bright ones, know what they are talking about. High on Arrogance and too often misinformed by equally incompetent advisors they don't seem the least bothered by their ignorance. Gove is reckoned to be one of the sharper ones. Doesn't bring confidence does it. We achieve in spite of them, not because of.

    I will say Soil depletion is a problem, but it's in very specific areas where there has been years(decades)of agricultural mismanagement. But for me the idea behind that claim seems to be to make people believe we are doomed. Yet if we are doomed and stop using the land, what will become of it? I'm more then sure there will be someone that will be buying that "worthless soil depleted" land up for pennies and make later huge profits from it. Follow the trail of money...

    • @kittonsmitton
      @kittonsmitton 3 года назад +3

      They will tell us todays farmer is in fact destroying the soil and no one will be allowed to own land, it will be given over to experts, thats when the famine's start, all the 'food produced naturally' will be sold to processed food producers to be sold to the public.

  • @SebXUK

    Thanks for this Harry, it was refreshing to hear some up to date research on this. One counter-point, however: I took a look at Ritchie's report and it seems to focus entirely on soil erosion (i.e. physically getting thinner). Is the claim of "only x harvests left" not also very much to do with soil fertility? As I understood it, the worrying trend was more to do with things like reliance on chemical fertilisers due to the soil becoming less fertile (a result of less livestock grazing maybe)? Interested to hear your take on that - I am absolutely no expert!

    I’m not a farmer at all but I love these videos as it informs myself of the rural farm life.

    The badger is only the half story, first the stone is freezing up to the top/surface and then the badger is turning over the stone. Check e.g. Mike Mitchell in Canada collecting big stones every year in his corn field. Thanks Harry for the knowledge about how many planting season are left.
