It's always the same story: 1) post-industrial city is hit by systemic decline (because cities have been hit by technology shifts since the dawn of time, i.e. long before the EU), loses population and has a bunch of poverty-related problems 2) local voters turn to demagogues because they are desperate (and stupid) 3) first national media don't care, but voting pattern makes them care 4) they finally go there to understand the unsettling vote; while doing so they are horrified by the state of the city. But they are proud - as they should be - of their gloomy yet poignant article on the ill-fated city. 5) the brave people of aforementioned city don't see it that way and are terribly offended by the way THEIR city is being misrepresented in the national media (what people mean by "misrepresented" is actually "fairly accurately represented, but we don't like it"). That’s because truth hurts and people are always defensive about their city (even when they themselves have said way worse about their beloved city…). 6) journalists, being no better than those people, don't like the truth either; they are as elite as elite can be, but they like it when people don't notice it, so they cave to the offended citizens and indulge with a second more positive article on the city. Any glimpse of hope, any positive initiative would do. Does the city have a new modern art museum (it usually does)? Is there a vibrant local community (there usually is)? Has the city been awarded some sort of “cultural city of the whole world” status no one knows about? Good! Them it’s settled: the city is bouncing back. 7) repeat process next election.
i was born a stokie, i will die a stokie, proud to be one, the world over we were renowned for what we did in the potteries, coal mines, steel works, and of course the pottery industry, there is not a country in the world that does not have a piece of stoke ware, witch also incorperated floor tiles, roof tiles wall tiles ETC, lets do it again. only this time.....BETTER. See you up hanley duck.
The problem is like with the pots not allowing any new industries in now the warehouses are doing the same. So you either take the low paid work or leave to pursue a career. We desperately need something to keep young professionals in the city.
Once I lived in stoke until the day I moved and I miss stoke very much In been there for 3 years and now I’m eight and I’m in Oldham and I have depression
I am a stokie I have lived in stoke all my life and am feel stoke is not a good place to live in All the things what make stoke, stoke is gone now and there us nothing left, what is really sad
I was born in Stafford, very near Stoke-on-Trent. I am a plate turner. My biggest ‘hit’was in the little town of Belo Jardim, Pernambuco, 115 miles from the Northeast Brazilial coast - it was an entire set of Johnson Brothers tableware given to my host (who didn’t even have a clue where England was, let alone S-o-T) in the 1920s (she said). Quite a turn-over. Brexit will do Stoke-on-Trent no good whatsoever at all!
G'day, Note to Stoke... Space beginneth at yonder Kaman Line, a place where the Atmosphere is so attenuated that the speed required to achieve Aerodynamic Control is higher than the speed needed to remain in Orbit, and it's generally agreed to be 100 Km above the Surface of the Earth, 63 miles or so.... Balloons do NOT ascend to the Kaman Line, they DON'T ever reach "Space" ; and if you-alls think that fudging the Definitions & aiming at fake Goalposts in a transparent "Media Event" will change anything in the Real World, then apparently thou art delusional, deeply deeply delusional. Accept the fact that the Economy is currently shrinking because unless some pre-existing Environmental Surplus is available to be exploited (ie, overharvested to, meet "Market Demand") then NO ECONOMIC ACTIVITY IS POSSIBLE...; and since the Broadacre AggroKult of Harvest Everything-ism began at Gobekli Tepe in 10,300 BC, every Environmental Surplus which used to be present on Earth has already been consumed. And it doesn't matter how fancy is your Chainsaw Manufacturing Plant, when all your Forests have been cut down... (ask the Germans, 25 years ago I bought a Stihl Chainsaw in Australia, it had been assembled in Brazil from Parts which were all made in Germany - where the market for Chainsaws was tiny and shrinking....). Artisanal Pottery aimed at the Posh end of the Snob Market might be your best remaining option ; but at the moment you're still up against Factories churning out Crockery by the Shipload in China, & almost giving it away in Thrift-Shops all over the World. Better yet, look to your Vegetable Gardens, and prepare ye for the day when all the Stupormarked Shelves are empty. Just(ifiably ?) sayin', Take it easy... ;-p Ciao !
The government has never been for the people! Ever. People need to support council members because they will be threatened and, if possible, blackmailed.
Great thinks to come after you leave EU, but we will rise even greater I think doesnt matter maybe time will tell good luck England. And leave already :D :D

The Staffordshire countryside surrounding Stoke is truly some of the best in the UK.. 10-15 mins drive in any direction away from Stoke.
Look forward to watching these!
Good to see! Any similar plans in the offing for Stockport, Owen?

I think this is a good example of disagreements and discourse 👍
EU Democracy
Question are you in or out? Answer: Yes/No
Answer: No
Answer: Incorrect try again.
It is all about UK party politics. Tories are very divided on the EU and Labour only want to replace Tories in Goverment..
Well said - Stoke On Trent is great !

Ciao !
WarblesOnALot good comment but the stuff they churn out in China is terrible its like saying Primark make cheaper clothes than stone island
I'd be proud to live in Brexit capital of Britain
Yes! That is why Stoke lost City of Culture 2021! Brexit Capital of Britain 2016! Long Live the Empire! Long Live the First Order!
Getting out of the One World Order EU best decision Stoke-on-Trent could have made, imo.
I don’t know, our government has neglected us thus far. I don’t see how this will improve things.
The government has never been for the people! Ever. People need to support council members because they will be threatened and, if possible, blackmailed.
...Stereotypes perpetuated by the Guardian among others.
that duck is in on the conspiracy everyone knows the world is flat.
