  • This is the Portland street estate, a community ravaged by years of cuts. The council made a bold move in an attempt to turn the estate around - but how did the £1 homes experiment turn out?

It honestly devastates me that this is one of the only videos some people here will see on Stoke-On-Trent. Honestly it's not all like this, it's not all bad. Of course it's not the most picturesque of areas, and it isn't a rich area, but it's better than this. The majority of people are amazing and there's a real sense of community - not everyone should be grouped in this way. Stoke is more than this. We are more than this.

What they need is CPTED (crime prevention through environmental design), and you can tell through the evening gatherings that they are starting to use those methods. If the perception is that the area is safe, crime actually goes down. The suggestions to rebuild, cover up graffiti immediately, plant nice things and maintain the area will bring in more shops and more families moving in. So will better lighting and camera equipment - just the perception that the area is being watched will help a ton in the long-term. You don't have to knock everything down - you just need to put effort into the community.

LabRat6619 that's so true they would do better if they just removed loads of houses and shops in the area and just built new attractive houses make the area look pretty throw in a few nice shops and people are more likely to live there and start something new! I'm sure it would cost a lot but they are taking over beautiful land in the countryside and budding 1,000s of new houses when money should be spent on areas like this you know. It's full of poor people and people on drugs and it seems like there are no jobs for people to earn a living so it's like an endless cycle when they have kids adding a few decent people to the community won't solve the bigger problem in my opinion 😕

Malica Hamilton this country is grossly overpopulated and not full of jobs to do. The poor tend to breed like rats to create even more desparate poor!
Globalisation totally destroyed The West with cheap imports closing factories. Poor people tended to work in factories and manual labour industries.
Previously world war used hundreds of thousands of lives and tended to regenerate the country afterwards.
The future is bleak as people continue to breed as if a golden world of opportunity awaits them!

Stoke on Trent has a huge potential as a city & as a community! Its friendly people on the streets, who will stop by & answer you if you were to ask for directions for example. Council has neglected many areas of the Stoke, the bright proof is the city centre with old, vacated buildings, which were due for demolition since around late 90s! Money is there, because Stoke is the Mecca of Take Aways & non-chain restaurants, with the variety of Asian cuisine, many car sales, garages & main dealership as well as so many small & medium companies and huge estates of many kind of factories & busineses & are all contributing to the economy of the Stoke! My personal view on the state of the negligence in some areas is bad financial management & laid back approach of local authorities!!!! Stoke on Trent council is sending "un-spent" funds back to the capital & thats why locals fighting for survival & London believe that Stoke is very rich city! I admire efforts of those few, who has a caradge to flow life back into the area, but also know for sure, that each & everyone of us has something to contribute for the success of our full of historical inheritance, city of Stoke On Trent! I wasn't born here, but found hapiness & made it home here! Stoke is incredibly beautiful with a magical & breath taking countryside, canal & boats, museums & sculptures, pottery & factories, where till today you can enjoy a master class with so many talented artists & you can make your own pottery to take home! We have several colleges & one of the best medical university in Britain!
Stoke is not a dream city- Stoke is memory maker!!!!!
Stoke, i believe in you & your people, now is the right time to get together to help our home blossom & shine again!!!

Same house in London 400K. The north needs more investment. I once lived further north but know the area and there were worse areas than Hanley a few miles down the road so looks like Hanley has changed dramatically.

Never been here but you will find that the majority of the people there are some of the kindest people in the world. I spent years living in one of the most deprived areas of Scotland and the people would honestly give you their last pound.

I live In stoke on Trent and honestly this is quiet an accurate representation of the majority of the area. But there is alot that isn't like that but you just sort of get used to it. Oh looks there's TinTin passed out maybe dead on the corner again someone go try wake him up. And we shouldn't have to deal with it the government needs to step up

I hate that people are calling this a dump, this is dump because of how it has been left, and its disgusting that there are so many people on the streets that would love to have a roof over their head and the government has let this shambles happen.

How can you be a part of the community if you paid a quid for your house and all the residents around you are struggling to live and are paying a rent for the same type of house?I think the local people need more than a bloody ceramics workshop!
