    Hi David. Thank you for this experiment! When I first started out I didn’t know that canvas panels might not be a good option. But I think I did use artist loft and it was kind of a crapshoot. sometimes they would bow and sometimes not. But I quickly moved on to stretch canvases because even though those are more expensive you’re wasting paint or I was wasting paint (& time) by using the canvas panels and just hoping that it would work out. In any regard you are my favorite teacher on the tube! A lot of the other artists, 90% of their videos are simply showing them doing a pour. They typically don’t explain the mechanics of it or even go farther and do experiments like this!

    Can you fix the boards if they’re warped?

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  11 дней назад

      Yes. Let them dry copletely (week +). Spray the back LIGHTLY and make sure everywhere gets a little. No standing water. Then sit them on a flat surface cover with parchment paper, and put a hard flat object on top. let it dry for 24-48 hours. Usually straightens it right now. Might have to repeat two or three times for very obstinate boards. 8)

      Tape down the middle. Pour one side. Let dry. Take down the middle on the other side. Pour and let dry.

    Does this warping happen with any paint? I have the Walmart panels and have been painting with acrylic matte and gloss paint.. usually using 2 or 3 coatings for backgrounds . . Does this mean my artwork will warp over time if hanging inside?

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  Год назад

      The warping happens because of the water in the paint so any paint can really cause this.
      If it doesn't warp during the initial drying process then it won't really warp afterwards.

    I Had same problem with walmart Boards. another problem i Have was if you take the poured cheap board from warm to cold it makes it warp more also. The Bigger the Board The more Bow/warp as well. If You afterwards put the poured board in a fairly strong Frame It Straightens the Board for viewing. Hi. I purchased a set of Arteza Primed Canvas Panels, in different sizes. Though they say they are made from acid free recycled paper, they seem to be pretty tough, with very little give to them.
    Is it possible to make a frame with a center brace on the back side, using lathes and double sided tape, so it can be removed later? Would this help to stop some of the warping?

  • @gingerinthedesertcreations
    @gingerinthedesertcreations 2 года назад +3

    I tend to think its something to do with the size. 5x7 Artezas are solid, I haven't seen a single thing go wrong with them after something like 18 different pieces but arteza 8x10 about a third of them self destruct and they should be made of the same stuff. More than half of the US Art Supply ones go wrong too but those are 12x12 I can't be sure that it isn't an amplified size effect.

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  2 года назад +1

      Size definitely amplifies the affect. The more surface area you have especially that is different size across the different axis will have more room to "move" and therefore bow. The bigger that board the more sturdy you want the insides to be.

But tonight I decided I could paint 8x10s just as quickly as the 5x7s and so earn more money. But I hadn't even thought about warping since my Walmart 5x7s don't warp. Thank you. I have to work on cheap canvas panels because I paint and sell seascapes to local tourists through local gift shops and I have to keep all my expenses as low as possible in order to keep my prices low. It's good to know that if I just seal both sides of panels, my panels won't warp. But also, if the customer immediately frames their painting, I assume that will stop warping of the panels?

    Hi! I have used canvas panels. Some did warp and others did not. I would check the backs to see what kind they were. I've found that using some thicker paint and sticking it on the back will " glue " it to rack while drying, that did keep it flat. I like your idea better though, spray it to seal it, there's less chance of warping for sure...I simply kept my fingers crossed! 😂 those that did warp, I sprayed the back with water, placed them face down on wax paper and weighed them down for a few days. 👈 It's still not perfect, as sometimes they'll curl after awhile.

    This is an excellent subject to cover and you're just so thorough. When I was just doing regular acrylic painting I always used canvas boards from Michael's because I could easily fit them into a regular frame. Here's why I especially love this content: when I first started pouring, I fell into the hobby lobby trap. I bought a bunch of the canvases supposedly made just for pouring. It didn't occur to me that they'd sell something so counter intuitive and disastrously useless. The canvas is supported with cheap cardboard! The second that gets wet it buckles and your pour is ruined. I was horrifed, even moreso when I tried to return $60 worth of them explaining to the manager what was wrong with them and she refused. FYI their canvas panels are the same cheap quality. I lost my receipt but I shopped there all the time so I asked for a store credit. Again she refused! I'm stuck with them and trying to figure out how to salvage them. Sorry this is such a long comment but I think its important for people to know about this stuff, yanno, what does and doesn't work. So I'm in the midst of experimenting, basically completely ruining these canvases one by one. Right now I'm waiting for a 2nd coat of spray varnish to dry on 2 if them then ill pour over it to see if the cardboard holds up. Ill let you and your viewers know! Thank you for being so generous and sharing all these great experiments. You are indeed the best content on RUclips for pouring!!

The larger the panel cheap or not, I have bowed canvases. They do absorb too much h2o. You CAN paint traditional acrylic/oil paint on any of the flat canvas panels without bowing of any kind. Just don't prop them up against a wall for too long, before you frame them, you get a bow then if you are not careful. Make sure the panel is supported, as well. The paint will also stick to itself if you stack them one on top of the other without a nonstick surface in between each one. Thank you

    Hi, thank you for posting this video. Sadly, it's a few months late for me to have avoided the horrible bending that I had. I do have a tip: One additional step, after covering the canvas with some type of sealant, is to use painter's tape on the back of the canvas. I found that when I made a few tape loops and added them to the back of my canvas that it really curbed the bowing. Mainly because it gave some resistance to the pull of the paint going into the cardboard fibers. I suggest painters tape or frog tape because it doesn't harm the canvas or the thin paper on the backer. I really appreciate your channel as it was the one that inspired me to start doing my own pouring art. Thank you and keep up the creative curiosity!

    I don't do acrylic pouring but this advice you give is appropriate to all painters using canvas boards. As I have an assortment of weird and wonderful frames collected from charity shops etc over years I have been making my own panels from hardboard.
    After experimenting in a less scientific way than you I settled upon two coats both sides and edges of the hardboard with a brush on clear builders wood sealant which claimed to be have nano particles sinking into the board. Seems to work on small panels before PVA gluing on canvas and then gesso coats. I shall try a 24x36 inch panel soon but that will probably be plywood for a special project.

    I didn’t destroy one to see what it was made of but I found the warp after a color test. I buy the cheap Walmart/dollar store ones for testing results before I use a canvas (lesson learned from not testing first). Some colors and mixes I make just don’t like to play well with others or isn’t desired outcome. I just took some lids from empty 2 Oz paints and nailed them through the canvas to a board. I’m not using them for anything else so that worked for me. But you couldn’t be more helpful for another purpose for these. They do absolutely need sealed because of warping. I haven’t tried artist loft because I’m thrift-ish. But not everyone has $ to throw at a better quality.
