    Hi from Chicago -- a couple of suggestions:
    1.) collecting the seeds: instead of a paper towel to catch the seeds from the pod, use a sheet of typing paper with a crease in it. You can direct the position of the seeds, and make sure no seeds are left behind caught into the porous fibers of the paper towel;
    2.) yeah, don't need the bark;
    3.) you can mist the soil once you plant the seeds, as well as sparse peripheral watering;
    4.) poke some holes in the top of the container, so they don't mold
    5.) if you don't have starter trays and pots, you can use egg cartons, with small holes poked in the bottom of the chambers.
    Looks like you did just fine, though. So save these for the next seed pod.

      @davidwittrock690 Год назад

      Good on the egg cartons. I use the hard plastic trays from large trays of separated chicken parts. Cleam, bleach, drill small holes in the bottom and put plastic wrap on the top over seeds and medium. Don't know if it'll work or not.

    My father would cross breed his peppers.. He found it very useful to use a small paint brush to collect the pollen and then transfer that pollen to the stamen of the plant he wanted. He said that was so easy especially if the brush was not a synthetic fiber but real hair/fur.

    Loved this, so happy to see the results after all this time! I fully support getting more African violets 😄 It's funny, I know a lot of people who grow both Orchids and Gesneriads (myself included!) - I think those two families just complement each other so well and offer so much diversity. If you want to branch out into other types of Gesneriads, I would really recommend Streptocarpus. Just as (if not more) beautiful, and just as easy to make hybrids with! I've done it myself and it's really fun and rewarding. Looking forward to seeing what you do next with these!

    I’ve only just seen your video , I have inherited from my mum after she passed in February. It is a 21 year old plant. It’s a hanging African violet which grows long and can go over the side of pots. I’ve brought it back to life and created extra plants from the leaves so if one dies I will always have it. I’m thinking I might try to hybrid just for fun. I wish I could send a photo

    This looks like such fun! I currently don't have a bunch of space or even indoor sunlight as I live in a basement with one window. It keeps me from being able to keep plants alive during the winter. I have tons of availability to african violets, being a general manager of a floral shop that also sells live plants. Specifically, euro-gardens and peace lilies (spath). I will def give this a try in the future. I tried to hybridize some amaryllis plants and got all the way to the seed formation and opened the pods to find nothing as they were bred to be sterilized to consumers of the retail level. I was pretty upset not going to lie.. But such is life, I guess. I also tried to hybridize some hibiscus flower bushes and also no success in that. I'm glad to see someone winning, haha!!

    • @oishd6077
      @oishd6077 2 года назад

      I've tried hibiscus too.... They formed seedpods and right before ripening they fell off 😭 i even tried crossing Rhynchostylis retusa with Phalaenopsis sesame , the cross took and after 1 month the seed pod fell off without properly ripening...it just shrivelled up 🤧

    You should try to cross the cup flowers and the big ruffled pink ones. Try and get something between the two, or something entirely different.

    I have grown African Violets from seed I purchased online (Nadeau's African Violet Seeds), and found that I had so many plants that I had to give some away. Many had to be culled and discarded as well due to bloom dropping, mis-shaped flowers, lack of vigor, etc.. The ones I did keep were more than plenty. I have never attempted my own hybridization, though. Thanks for sharing! I too have orchids, as well as Streptocarpus or Cape Primrose.

    I’ve kept violets for a couple of decades, knowing very little about them. The old ones I had were in need of help, so I began studying up on everything about violet care and propagation. Next thing I knew I was deep in the middle of a huge propagation project. Now, three years later, I am known as the Crazy Violet Lady. But one think I’ve never done is create my own hybrids by cross pollination. I will begin this experiment this weekend!

    Lol for some reason I especially like the distorted one :D But the other ones are gorgeous as well, the dark one with the galaxy pattern is stunning.
    I have a bunch of african violets, including a super beautiful blue one with a stripy star pattern that I found at a flower shop! So far I've only propagated them through leaf cuttings, and I have some new babies from leaf cuttings I bought online, don't yet know what these will look like. If there's something really cool among these then I might try to hybridise them and the blue one!

    MissOrchidGirl - My Mom and I would like to suggest the name for your purple African Violet could be: "Deep Purple Galaxy." This is because it looks like purple coloured deep space with galaxies within. Also, you could call the pink one: "Starry Heaven." We hope you like the names and thanks for all your lovely videos, we really love them! Orange is my favorite colour too BTW, as you can see from my Swirl avatar that I made!
