I love that you are growing African violets. I have been growing them for almost 40 years now. They are my first love. I moved last year so my AV collection is small but I had just ordered more today before I saw your video. Ty again for the AV content. I can watch AV and orchid videos all day.
Great video! I worked in a violet house many years ago and just love them. I didn’t know you can buy leaves to propagate. I love your shelves. I get a little tired of my orchids too sometimes since they don’t bloom very often, the violets just bloom and bloom😊.
I have a whole 2 meters long window shelf full of African violets. I have no idea what "brand" they are because I got the leaves from my grandmother and she had grown them for decades but I know the first one of those came from Sweden. I've had them for 30 years and I have grown them from leaves and by repotting pieces of root/stems and I have made a hybrid by accident. All the flowers were first very dark purple and then one plant started to bloom with white flowers that had dark purple middle. I have never rooted new plants in water, I have just pinched few leaves off and stick them into the soil/dirt. After about 4-5 months the new leaves comes out of the soil. I grow them in plastic pots with a good layer of clay gravel on the bottom and on the watering plate and I always water on the plate never over the plant. And no spraying. They grow by the southern window with a light curtain protecting them from the most intense sunlight in the middle of the summer. We have all four seasons here and the violets love the south window and the light. But in the winter months when it is dark I water them very little, once in a couple of weeks and only little pit of water on the plate. Usually in these days (end of February) I repot them but not every year, and start to give some fertilizer, more diluted than what the manufactures suggest. And start watering them more and about once a week. And every year they start to bloom in April and they bloom all summer until the end of September/early October. I love them very much and they are easy to care and beautiful flowers.
Oh my goodness. I love the colours you have chosen Danni. The varigation on the leaves also appeal, doing double duty when the flowers aren't in bloom. I especially liked the dark red one. Thanks for showing your newest plants. 😄
Thanks for the video, i might give african violets a try. My mom loves them and they’ll remind me of her. I also agree about the noisy neighbors!! My house shares walls with two other houses and being irritated by neighbor noises is a constant. But i’ve learned that I’m actually noise sensitive. From what you’ve said you might be as well. Being aware of it has helped me, as well as internet advice on how to deal with it.
Thank you Danny for making african violet videos. I got my first one because of you and I have it in a diy self watering pot and never had any issues. She's actually about to bloom again.
Love! I propagated two full plants, the first took 2 years to bloom. It's been blooming profusely for 6 months! The second is a full pot, healthy ,not in bloom yet ,one year old.!!! Plant of GrandMaries when I was a kid. I'm an old gal now!💚
YES 👍 more AV. I love seeing the variety 🥰 mine are blooming like crazy right now. They fill in the holes during the year when I have little/no orchid blooms 🙃
Hi Danny. I have been raising miniature AV's from leaf cuttings for the last two years. I cut the stem end at a slant, dip them in rooting powder and plant directly into African violet potting soil. In two months (the time that it takes for yours to root), baby plantlets begin to push up through the soil surface. Also, I have an indoor plastic-covered greenhouse, with plant lights and a small fan to circulate moist air. There is a small "pond" of water in a container that sits on a seedling heat mat on the floor of the greenhouse. Thanks for sharing your method with us.
We are so alike! I also love glass, I can’t explain it, but I just like glass jars and vases, any interesting colors or shapes. I also love propagating my African violets, it’s addicting to watch them grow. And yes, I’m irritated by noisy neighbors too! One of many neighbors loves his power tools and gas powered pressure washer… so much that he uses them every day! Lol Oh, and thanks for the info on potting these leaves! It really helps. Love the AV content! Can’t wait to see them grow!
Hi! I just subscribed to your channel! Thank you for the wonderful content! I love your setup (such pretty shelves and clean looking!) and so nice to find a bit younger motivator to inspire my love of African Violets! 🌺
Loved seeing you start growing African violets again. My rescued violet didn't make it. I even repotted her in A. V. soil from Repot Me and got a new pot for her from them. I will try again after the first of the year.
I love the miniature av! And I don't want to spoil the fun but I have got a lot of african violets which I propagated from leaf in a Milsbo cabinet and unfortunately trips got inside there as well (and aphids). I keep them with all the little pots in a tray so it's quite easy to take the whole thing out and spray them but trips are really a awful pest and once you have them you never seem to get rid of them completely.
Thanks to you Im reeeeaally into African Violets and have now alot of them. The adults are also finally in bloom and the leaves I have growing babies are ok. Some Ive lost because Ive watered too much. My favorites currently are Trailers, I like the bushy look and the endless flowers. I really want to try making hybrids too, the idea is so amazing 😍
such cute leaves the variegated ones ^^ Oh by the way, the one with the Russian name "Goluboi" means "light blue" in Russian and "lyutik" is a flower name - the buttercup, so light blue buttercup :) Oh and "rumyanetz" means blush from Russian :)
The first time I rooted an African violet when it had a good root system but no sprouts I transitioned it to soil. It didn't do well and slowly died, so now I keep it in water until the new leaf growths are starting to develop and then I plant it
Many times you apologize for the noise but I hardly hear a thing! It can be frustrating though when you like peace and quiet! I’ve been there!! Love your African violets. I have two and propagated one. I didn’t realize it would make three more plants!! Cheers!
I love your orchid tutorials and I also love glass vases and African violets. Unfortunately I lost my plant growing area , when my son and his family moved in with my husband and me.
Great job. I had a few African Violet leafs to root, they just rotted away. I have not had an opportunity to get more to try again. Really enjoyed the information. Thank you.🤗
You can cover your shot glass or other small glass jar with plastic wrap, cut a small slit in the plastic, and insert your leaf through the slit into the water. It holds the leaf up out of the water and prevents losing too much water via evaporation. Periodically, you will need to replace the old water with fresh if it is looking cloudy.
I'm propagating AV's leaves from ebay quite successfully as well. As for the noisy neighbors, if it's any consolation, we hear practically nothing in the actual videos, so no worries! :)
Very excited to see baby plantlets grow, this is a first for me seeing how to propergate plants very interesting. 1 Q. Did you change water or top up water during the 2 months before potting? BTW I absolutely love the Gold decorative pots in the cabinet 😍 they really pop
Hi, thank you for the beautiful and informative videos. You can sometimes show us your orchids outside, I care about the location and how it wants light. Only some in summer, in the Czech Republic it is only possible in summer. Thank you
Please can we have some more AV videos. I love your Orchid ones but I have just started my AV collection to keep me occupied in the quiet Orchid months.
Hello have you tried putting a drop or two of peroxide to your water propagation? It can help rooting faster and prevents the propagation from rotting.
Hi, no it doesn't make sense to me 🤔 hp reacts with organics eliberating oxygen in the process, so all you'll have left from h2o2 is h2o.. which is water. So yeah I don't think it does anything 😋
Hurray for AVs! I’m glad you leapt. You didn’t do anything wrong the last time. It was all the thrips’ fault! I have a few AVs too. I have to say that the leaves I’ve been propagating have taken quite long to show babies. Some over 6 months still have no baby. Maybe they never will. :( the other babies are still so tiny that I’m afraid of handling them. Also I’m with you on the loud neighbors. MY GOODNESS! It’s the bane of my existence! Right now it’s is 10 AM and they’re already started with they partying for thanksgiving. And I know it’s thanksgiving. But do you really need to be so loud at this hour? SMH. Anyway! Happy you brought back violets! Have a great day!
Hi, cattleya my grandpa gave me was loosing leafs and doing it faster 2 leafs today alone so I re-potted it and noticed that it had no healthy roots. I don't know what the problem is so I have cut off all the dead roots and re-potted in barks. I hope that it can recover 😔
You made me remember how my father had a bunch of these when I was little and we were still living in Italy. He must have given them away to family when we moved to Canada :( You might convince me to grow a few a few for him like this xD Do you also have succulents? :3

Hey I have two violets. This is a very helpful video Thanks! 5:13
I love this type of video, where you chat while repotting stuff...it's like hunging out with a friend! :)
I love African Violets. I used to have quiet a few. I can't wait to see what flowers they produce

Are you ever going to bring back the “Orchids in bloom” series? I loved watching those and creating a wish list from them 🥺

Wow that abaxial surface of the leaves, is a gorgeous purple.

@Roz Laizure I start my leaves the same way in soil, but no rooting powder and I don't have a greenhouse. They take awhile but do survive.

If you have a wide opening vase, you can cover the top with aluminum foil then poke a hole for the stem but protect the leaf on top. Works well for me
