  • This is just a demo which shows the Hammond SK2 with some tweaks and the Mini Vent for Organ. The second half of the video also shows how the Nord C2D sounds with the Mini Vent for Organ as a comparison.
    I used a direct output from the Mini Vent for Organ, and it was connected straight to the video camera Sony HDR-MV1. I added a little reverb when I edited this video.All the EQ nobs were set in a neutral position.

    Rather FAMOUS, the best new HAMMOND (here a SK) with professional XK
    serie, don't look for anorther kéyboard, this one is state of the art, a
    real HAMMOND. Thanks for the fabulous work of HAMMOND engineers. With a
    real LESLIE cabinet it's impossible to tell if it's a legendary
    B3/A100/C3 or a new B3.

    FABULOUS HAMMOND sounds by the best HAMMOND clone, no need buying a copy like nord or other key B duo. This new HAMMOND with a LESLIE cabinet is simply fabulous.

    Sweet sound! I like my SK1 with the second manual and also appreciate the possibilities of tweaking every parameter. A great advantage.

    thanks for replying. you're right nothing can beat the sound of a real tonewheel generator organ. i also own a hammond xk3-c clonewheel organ from hammond suzuki...not a bad organ at all, but the A100 its a lot better specially after i replaced the tone generator capacitor tray and the recalibration of the pick up rods and added a boss reverv rv-5 pedal

    The Vent, Mini Vent, etc. are an ideal opportunity for most keyboards that already have a reasonably good Hammond drawbars sound to extend that realism further through a Leslie effect that is produced by this effects pedal. I owned one for a week, figuring I would enhance the Leslie effect that was already on my Hammond SK1 sufficient to warrant spending the $300 or so for it. Frankly, it did "help" the factory Leslie on the SK1 but not enough to warrant having to have another piece to plug in and haul around for gigs and resulting in yet another wall wart to plug into an already crowded power strip. Frankly--for me (a veteran of "real" Hammonds and Leslie cabinets), there wasn't much difference between the SK1's Leslie and the 'Vent--at least when using preset "A" (a "milder" effect--B setting is more intense--and for me, TOO intense, too artificial). Anyway, if you've got an SK1 or SK2, I think your advantage of having one of these isn't worth it.

    • @HalTsuchida
      @HalTsuchida  9 лет назад

      MotownRockinroller I think it depends on players. I hear differences between the Mini Vent (the Vent II) and the onboard sim. Especially the midrange. Also, the overdrive on the Vent sounds better to my ears. There are a couple of other things, and of all these considered, it's worth adding the Vent to my setup. Like you said, the onboard sim is good, but I would like to have a little bit more.

    Hal, I know this video is old and I hope this comment makes it to you. I received the Hammond SKX yesterday and so far I am loving the little bit that I have heard and played. I do have a question though. I hear a lot of people talking about "tweaking" these clonewheels and the great amount of tweaking you can do on the Hammonds but never demonstrate. Can you tell me what is meant by "tweaking" (as it is being referred to the Hammonds) and how I can get started with it? I like the fullness of the mid range out of the box but when I start to pull out my last 4 drawbars it thins out quickly and gets a little (LOT) to bright for my liking. Nothing like my hammond at church and that one isn't even a B3 it's a C2 with a 147. I thought this one was going to sound better/fuller since it's supposed to be modeled after the B3 but so far that's not the case. Thank you in advance!

    • @HalTsuchida
      @HalTsuchida  5 лет назад +2

      Actually after I made this video, I even tweaked a lot more. I used my restored B3 to tweak the sound engine of the SK2. I tweaked each tonewheel on it. However, I found out the limitation. As I had a relationship with Hammond Suzki, I asked them to change some stuff, but they didn't. Overall sound is okay, but I don't have the SK1/2 anymore. A while after this video, I really got into repairing and restoring real Hammond and Leslie, so whenever I tweak clones, I always use my B3 and A100 as a reference. I have the Viscount Legend, and it sounds great after tweaking it. However, no clones can sound better than the real thing. Especially restored Hammond and Leslie sound fantastic.

    Hey Hal! Awesome demonstration of the Hammond SK2 hah, been a fan of your playing after discovering you through an album you've done. Have you ever tried other clone wheels like the Crumar Mojo XT? Thanks

    • @HalTsuchida
      @HalTsuchida  4 года назад

      Thank you, James! I have owned the Crumar Mojo, the SK2, the C2D, and the Viscount Legend. Currently I use the Legend mainly and sometimes the C2D. You can see all those clones on my videos. The Mojo I owned had so many problems, so it wasn't reliable. They replaced for a new one, but still it had a problem.

    Hi Hal, fantastic played :-)! I´ve a question , how conected you your Mini Vent II to the Organ? I´m very courious because you have a Plug in the "ON Switch" of the Mini Vent...Please, can you tell me, what and how can you control with that such as how you maked this modification...I´ve a SK2 and Mini Vent also. Thanks a lot and greetings . Rubén

    • @HalTsuchida
      @HalTsuchida  5 лет назад

      Thanks Ruben! The one I have is the original Mini Vent. With this one, Ashby Solutions used to make the module to convert the bypass switch into the halfmoon input jack. Unfortunately you cannot do this mod on the Mini Vent II, and also this module has been sold out. If you'd like to use the halfmoon switch, using the Vent II is the only solution for now. I hope this helps. :)

    Hello Tal
    Can you explain me how to tweak the sk2 for the bass sound.
    I love your bass sound.
    Do you add the lower 808 on the bass pedal sound?
    Thanks a lot

      I use 838 or 848 and tap pedals. Usually I tap G. I don't have the custom files for the SK anymore, but I think I posted all the files on Clonewheel Facebook group.

    I change a patch and the bass pedals lose the sustain I set. The bass pedals of the future were analog and made by Multivox in the late 70s. They had a volume knob - Familiar? And you set sustain you liked and there it stayed. I'm going to see if I still have time to return this Sk2. I'm sure it's me, but Yecchh! I'm tired of trying to learn this thing...the manual is beyond over-written!

    • @punypoppy9147
      @punypoppy9147 8 лет назад

      +pyannaguy I'm not sure if my question is correct in a sense, but do you know if the issue you describe is present in hammond xk3c systems also? If, then that's a big deal breaker issue imo.

    • @pyannaguy
      @pyannaguy 8 лет назад +1

      +Puny Poppy Not sure...Sorry. I sent my Sk2 back at considerable expense. Got stuck with the overpriced volume pedal ('expression pedal' as they call it), but the rest of the cost was restored to my credit card.
      All I can say is the videos are impressive, but "in person," I found a lot not to like about the Sk2. Could be just me. I know one thing - they shouldn't sell it as the only keyboard you'll need on a gig where versatility is required - the piano sounds are much weaker than you can routinely find on much cheaper instruments.
      . I wish I could have found one to try before buying, but I couldn't find a store in LA with demonstrator, so I took the plunge. It wasn't for me.

    so how did you recorded the sound of the clonewheel organs? did you recorded directly to your video recorder? your mini vent sounds very good...better than my ventilator II with my hammond A100 and i know it's because of whatever you used to record

    • @HalTsuchida
      @HalTsuchida  9 лет назад

      +4hammonds I used a small mixer and it was connected to a video recorder straight. I added a little bit of reverb when I edited the video. Actually I prefer the Vent II because I can tweak more especially overdrive. To be honest, the sound on this video is good, but I wanted more beefy sound, so I started using the original tonewheel set on the SK2 and tweaked some global EQ. I still think your A-100 sounds good though because of the C/V. I tried hard to match my A-100 for the C/V, but it still sounds different.

    • @HalTsuchida
      @HalTsuchida  9 лет назад

      +4hammonds For this video, I didn't use any speakers, but when I play shows, I usually use the Leslie SPA-150RL, which is a full range speaker by Hammond Suzuki. I didn't use any EQ. I will try to make another video soon because I tweaked my SK2 with the Mini Vent recently, and it sounds even better than before.

    How what did you study to learn those bebop lines fantastic

    • @HalTsuchida
      @HalTsuchida  10 лет назад +2

      First I did learn a lot from Barry Harris's workshop videos, and when he came to Chicago, I asked him all the questions I had, and he answered all of them. By the way, I used to live in Chicago. Then I transcribed and analyzed a lot of bebop players like Red Garland, Hampton Hawes, Sonny Clark, McCoy Tyner (early 60's), Herbie Hancock (early 60's), Barry Harris, Bud Powell, Cedar Walton, and Kenny Barron whose playing I'm also analyzing at the moment. I'm still learning.

    Hello Hal, how would you compare the Hammond SK2, Nord C2D and the Crumar Mojo?

    • @HalTsuchida
      @HalTsuchida  10 лет назад +4

      Unfortunately I had some issues with the Mojo, and I couldn't tweak it to my liking although I spent so many hours with it. Also, it's a little bit bigger and heavier to transport for gigs all the time. Both the SK2 and the C2D are great and very reliable. They are also lighter, so it's easier to transport. I'm not a big fan of the C/V of the Nord. One thing I like about the SK2 is the tweakability of many parameters. All thee clones are great organs, and I think it depends on your taste, in my opinion.
