Muay Thai is not the only martial art that has elbows and knees, Lethwei is not the only martial art that has headbutts, and Taekwondo is not the only martial art with spinning kicks. These martial arts are only famous for using these techniques because they are most commonly utilized in frequent competition. There are other martial arts that have all of these techniques, but their purpose is different, usually for self defense or health, that does not mean that they are useless, it just means they serve a different purpose.

I feel like most people never trained anything and are just talking trash, Karate is amazing and was some of the best techniques in martial arts, the point version was give Karate a bad exposure to the general public, people dont realize this but Karate is all over MMA, also when people talk about Muay Thai they talk about guys that had 300+ fights, the average Muay Thai practitioner is not that good they tend to be better that the average Karate one because Muay Thai was shorter learning curve to it, Karate takes 5+ years to get good, specially with hands, and in today's world if you only know one martial art you are fool you should take bits from other arts and include it in your arsenal of techniques. Karate does work.
    Its up to the user.
You can be a muay thay or mma fighter who barely has weight or physical strength and experience and lose to a karateka.
Its all about how strong the body got and how many skills he has.
    Being strong is 1 ability.
But what does it matter when someone has 10 different abilties???
I can be the strongest guy o earth and lose to someone who is faster than me and has bigger endurance.
Or more techniques or is more durable.
    Its all to the user.
Ans for the ,,Muay thay beats karate" kiddos:
Muay Thay is trained with much sparring and full contact with all physical force.
If karate training has those principes aswell then muay thay has no real difference to karate.
Actually 1 disadvantage to karate: Having more than 1 style.

@@Mr.KnomTom yes and you can still see the old techniques in muay boran. Boran is a rich and profound art with open hand techniques, locks, strangles etc. Modern Muay Thai has imho become very glove oriented so really just focuses on thudding strikes that are harder to do bare knuckle. Take for example the recent bout between Saenchin and Bukaw. That was ungloved and you can see they don't really know how to use their fists (relatively speaking, obviously they are far beyond me, gloves or no gloves. But they are less effective than they are gloved because they don't have such a sense of what open hand is like). It also profoundly changes their clinch game. Why karate doesn't work when kickboxing does:
Karate (shotokan), as well as taekwondo and kung fu are procedure-oriented martial arts. In karate training proper technique execution is the most important part of the training. Therefore no matter what is your age, sex, height, weight, general athleticism, strong points, weak points - everyone trains the same. Experimentation and creativity of adepts is often frowned upon and definitely not encouraged. Same warmup, same kihon and kata. Kumite is usually the last part of the class, and many schools neglect it heavily, for various reasons. Lack of safety gear, lack of a proper number of advanced enough students to do it safely, lack of a good number of instructors to ensure it's all going on without major injuries or other issues.
Sparring is the ultimate test (aside competition) of a combat ability, it's stress testing technique to ensure as much as possible that you can perform techniques in a real self defense situation. If you don't spar - you aren't a fighter. You can call yourself a martial artist but it doesn't mean much if you don't spar.
Kickboxing (Muay Thai included, also in boxing) is a result-oriented martial art. And the result is winning the fight. Aside fundamentals- technique isn't as important as long as you can keep winning. Individuality of fighters plays a much bigger role in training. Boxing has boxing styles that fit many different body types- larger and slower dudes can be sluggers or boxer-punchers, smaller dudes with bad reach can become infighters while fast footwork dudes with good reach can be outboxers. In muay thai you have like 5 common types of nak muay, some are better with kicks, others with punches etc. Experimentation and creativity of fighters is encouraged as long as it lets them win sparrings.
And yeah, sparrings. A lot of them, often including separate sparring hours, either as extra or so regular classes aren't 75% sparring.
This is why karate doesn't work, the issue is at the core. And when it works- it produces capable fighters 2-3 times slower than kickboxing. Often relying on the practitioner doing much more work in his "free" time to improve as a fighter.
And I mean shotokan. Kyokushin has a strong focus on kumite, full contact. Lots of injuries but it really produces hard hitting, durable mfs. Can't take a face punch for the life of them, but kyokushin is a great supplementary martial art for boxers who want to get their punching power to the next level. They also have few cool punches unseen in boxing classes, like "stabbing uppercuts" (don't know the name, sorry) or short straight punches from their wide guard, that pack a power between a jab and a straight.
Shotokan and taekwondo are still decent martial arts, about medium tier in usability, above stuff like aikido, ninjutsu, systema (yuck), wing chun (yuck), tai chi, capoeia, jeet kune do, most kung fu in general. And they make decent supplementary skillsets for boxers and kickboxers. Special mention for muay thai and taekwondo- those 2 make a wonderful, devastating combination.

    • @sirmagnifus7350
      @sirmagnifus7350 4 месяца назад +1

Why did you rate jeet kune do so low?Isn't it practically just a philosophy?

    • @miqvPL
      @miqvPL 4 месяца назад

@@sirmagnifus7350 It is! And it's great as a philosophy. A good JKD instructor can really refine skills of a martial artist.
Sadly as you might be aware most JKD schools teach it as a pretty stale martial art, basically a mix of wing chun and kickboxing, often trying to immitate Bruce Lee's moves, selling mysticism and almost bullshido. Very little sparring. If you spend some time on youtube watching various JKD discussions you can find out how bad it is for JKD these days.
But yeah in it's pure form it's big bonus, great for refinement and helping people develop their own style

"And I mean shotokan. Kyokushin has a strong focus on kumite, full contact. Lots of injuries but it really produces hard hitting, durable mfs."
Notice that you seemed to only know two styles Shotokan and Kyokushin. You also didn’t notice that Kyokushin has all the same sort of kihon and kata and focuses on the traditional techniques that Shotokan has. The only difference is that they have a full-contact rule set in Kumite. This allows full-contact blows and produces toughness, but it allows two people to stand toe to toe and exchange blows in a context where headshots would end the fight if they were allowed. I
Shotokan actually has a much better defensive game because it practises with the concept of one punch, one kill, and hence, taking a shot at all is seen as a bad thing. So instead of focusing on punishment as a defence, it produces fighters who are better at evasion. It is also much more proficient with things like throws and defences against head punches, which Kyokushin lacks.
I suspect you don’t really know what you're talking about.

@@EragonAnimator if your only defense is telling me that I dont know what Im talking about you can pretty much fuck off. Shotokan kumite is a joke as much as the one punch=one kill shit.
I know more karate styles, including okinawan ones and modern freestyles, I just used 2 most popular styles. So what kyokushin has kihon or kata, those are used as training tools more than anything else, kumite is the main focus.
I was a shotokan karateka in the late 90s, trained by more old school guys and it was a joke back then too, not to mention today shotokan.

Wrong. The big difference is that boxing , kick-boxing, Muay Thai all use boxing gloves. This allows you to fight in a totally different way. Karate is practical so empty hand.
Any time a boxer Muay Thai or kick-boxer invites you to fight cordially invite them to do it no gloves no hand-wraps. Suddenly TOTALLY different.

YES! I have used Recreational karate ( combat sport version) in 2 real life fights. But there are two ways of using karate (1) for recreational purposes (2) for combat. But both are different. With the original combat version you don't need to use or learn many katas just 1 but with the sport version you have to learn all katas depending what style your learning. Also remember the old masters had no styles in their day no belt system no GI or dojo and some had to train alone.

There's also another aspect of budo that (among others) Inazo Nitobe and Shinji Nakabayashi espouse: the idea of forming karacter (consciously mispelled).
While most western martial artists I have encountered practice it for either gaining sports achievements, or as a physical workout - making them (I would argue) martial sportists - Japan (and other East Asian countries) use it as a method of forming a person's character. Through hard practice, where focus is not solely on achieving a physical effect of a technique, the student can develop discipline, patience, and humility, making them better people.
    Compare archery to kyūdō:
In the first sport, the whole point is to hit the target. If they can do so while sitting down and eating a banana, it would not detract from the result.
In kyūdō, on the other hand, the posture, attitude (ki), and movement of the competitor are all judged equally (if not more) to where the arrow strikes.
This, in my opinion, is the difference between a martial sport and a martial art.

I have been put on my ass so much by Karate guys. They are so quick and when they hit, they hit HARD. I have huge respect for any and all Martial Arts if they are taught/ trained correctly. They all have something to teach. People who watch a few RUclips videos on a certain art don't get an opinion. People who have dedicated years of their lives to learning an art do.

Yes, my Sensei was a 4th Dan in Shotokan, sparred with 6th Dans, and still managed to hit them hard, had palms like granite rock- probably did some iron palm training, apart from having legs hard as stone, and punches that could send you down, he could probably take on a Thai fighter, as his legs were seriously conditioned, over 30+ years experience in Japan, and Goju Ryu, it certainly works, as they say, one strike one kill, your aim is to get that one punch or kick that will end the fight, and put your opponent in hospital with broken bones or ruptured organs.

Love the videos man but…. Hate when folks say “but”. However really do dig the videos. Yes GSP and others have done karate but their wins had almost no karate or any other “king fu” umbrella martial art. There are champs in the ufc that also did ballet, but they didn’t win cause of it.
Wrestling, BJJ, Muay Thai and boxing is what is what wins real fights.
Take your average karate dojo and boxing dojo and have the best guys in a few weight divisions do a full contact spar. Who do you think will win?
Boxing gyms are filled with guys that know how they react when hit really hard in the face/kidney and ribs.
Heck take a high school wrestler and put them against another 16 year old that’s been doing karate for 10 years.
As long as that wrestler knows the feeling and how they react getting hit in the face… the wrestler wins every time.
I’ve seen this play out so many times as a former dumb kid and a school teacher.
Now discipline, breathing, community for kids etc. karate is great. But 12 year olds breaking balsam wood and thinking they can fight can be very dangerous.

Tbh I think sport karate has alot to add to a martial artist's journey. Speed, technique, lots usable strikes. ability to spar with control, precision, respect, and longer range weapons. At the end of the day it's a journey, do what's interesting and combine. I mean I have trained in uiechi Ryu for a while, I didn't know if this would ever be applicable in sparring but all of a sudden applications came through. Interesting journey.
It occured to me that as modern internet addicted humans can spend to much time comparing, sizing up, evaluating and not just living. Go and do what attracts you see if there's value and more forward in whatever way makes the most sense - with respect for all those that are willing to show you something, even if you don't think it the best. Life doesn't have to be a constant dick measuring competition and let's be honest martial arts are labels for a set of movements.. human movements... they have more in common than different.
