I hope one day they update the mechanics of early rances to get people up to speed with the plot like you mentioned because boy do some of those games feel impossible without a guide hah!

    Hey there. First I want to say that I appreciate your channel. Started watching your vids a couple weeks ago because I'm always eager to hear people talk about sexual content in games with actual care and nuance instead of the dismissal it's usually treated with by mainstream outlets. My introduction to Rance was through the hentai OVA that was released a while back, but I got into the games proper this year after buying Rance 01 in January.
    I'd like to play through the whole series from there before getting to IX, so I can't say much about it, but I love your point about Rance's evolution over the years, and I would say, its larger place in gaming history. It's origins as an obscene send-up of JRPGS to its current status as sprawling fantasy epic is fascinating, and AliceSoft's dedication to creating such a unique world and varied gameplay between titles is something to be admired. I find a ton of inspiration in their work, both in Rance and beyond.
    I think there's a lot to be said about the "flavors" of Rance, both vanilla and very-not-vanilla, and Rance's utility as a character. He's a complete piece of shit, more or less only redeemed by the fact that the games color his transgressions in more comedic tones than antagonists that do the exact same, but, when the storytelling is at its best, he's also a great point of contrast to the other truly healthy relationships or heroic characters in the series. Rance is the main character, but he's not the good guy.
    Anyway, cool vid, lol. Hope to see you talk about the series more.

    I agree that those companiess inability to distinguish between reality and fiction is so absurd, inconsistent and hyprocritical. However we have to admit on this one that they do reflect the views of a big portion of their audience. For some reason, a lot of people decided that depictions of a certain crime (obvious which one it is here) isn't accepted in video games. Yeah kinda funny that depictions of murders and genocides are perfectly fine, but not crimes of sexual nature. They don't hold the same standards in high budget tv shows though, the exemples are plenty.
    So yeah those' companies' policies won't change anytime soon, but that's also mostly because of the general playerbase's views. Maybe things will change a decade or two from now, cause I don't see it anytime soon.

    Just a some minor addendums here:
    If we considere the Little Princess series as part of Rance Series, Rance started at 1987.
    Also, Leazas r4p3d, tortured and sold other women since she was 11. I am sure you may find in the old testament 11 year old queens doing torture, r4p3 or sl4v3 trades. I am just not entirely sure you may find all those things on the same character at the same time (or at least since that young age).

    I've never had such a strong love/hate relationship for a character than Rance. It's not even the "struggle sessions" that I take issue with, but the childish way he acts when doing so. But teasing is a turn off for me. I do like the power play dynamics when's he's with a girl who can keep up or even overwhelm him.
    But honestly, I still prefer Rance over 90% of the weak vanilla protagonists out there who are like "are you ok? i'm not hurting you?" every 5 minutes. Or the ones that are just complete monkey brain morons with no redeeming qualities besides being kind of nice and at the right place right time.

    Like many other people, my first Rance game was Rance 7, AKA Sengoku Rance. After replaying it many many times to see the different paths, complete the different difficulties, unlock all the optional bonuses and get a solid amount of points to buy those bonuses, I wasn't tired of it, I just loved it more than ever. I honestly think it is the best video game.
    Given how much I loved it, I sought information about the series and played many of the other games. It turns out that there is an absolutely extraordinary amount of lore for this series, and a lot of it is insane in a very good way. They've built something very special with this series and it's a shame that people treating sex like it's worse than violence has limited its potential so much.

    A good chunk of the Rance games seem to be on GOG but 3, 4 and this one seem to be missing. From what I gather the versions of 1 and 2 are remakes, and while 3 has a remake 4 doesn't (but it does have two sequels). 9's not on GOG either but I think the translation came out like two weeks ago.
    As for the series itself... well, I think that the best thing that could happen is if SsethTzeentach did a review on one of the games. Even though there's already a big overlap between people who watch him and people who at least know about him, he still reguarly rakes in millions of views and it can really drive up the sales. The combat was relatively fun though, but it feels like it took development time from story content.

      @Hambs23 Год назад +3

      I felt like that up until more characters joined up and the dialogue returned somewhat to its usual antics. It is undoubtedly more serious toned than previous titles, but maybe it feels different since it derives the focus from Rance's personal development (which is very little in this title) and instead gives a lot of screen time to the other main characters, with him being more of a bridge that allows their own personal development.
      8, aka Quest, is still the goofiest, and probably the most "Rance-like" of all. The main plot feels very disjointed, but there's so many different side stories and a lot of worldbuilding that wouldn't exist if it had a more traditional story. It's like experiencing the view-point of the main character in a open world game, but presented in a stage based dungeon crawling RPG fashion.
      But there's one question that persists: What did they do with Willis? In IX there aren't even proper levels, did they fire her?

    • @johnsmith3548
      @johnsmith3548 Год назад

      @@Hambs23 The problem is that 9's story is not about rance and I wouldn't call the plot serious. All rance plot is fairly serious starting 6 and this one had enough goofiness in it. The thing about 8 is that it had a satisfying conclusion to the setting and plot was actually focused on rance. In 9 we have 'lol we have a democracy now' as an ending which feels like either a joke or modern western rewrite compared to every other game plot. And rance's goal was just pretty much ignored. At least Kanami's and Tilde routes were rather fun, but that's pretty much the only big praise I'm willing to give.

    Rance is amazing, by far my favorite visual novel game series and high up with fantasy and isekai settings in general. So much surprising depth, fun, lore and amazing character writing.
    The thing that saddens me the most is that Rance could be an extremely popular franchise nowadays if they'd dare to make an anime or light novel series out of it as some sort of reboot. They could be creative with the smut like many other shows scratching that itch, but overall I'd say that with its humor, extremely fun memeble characters and setting it could become as successful as Konosuba or Shield Hero. Even to short mediocre H OVA is one of the most popular ones out there.
    Rance is a fun parody of the classic fantasy hero and it's crazy how well written he his, especially when you consider how old the franchise is and how well explored that trope is.
    I'm still hoping that Alicesoft will stumble over this potential gold mine again, that TADA returns or that they'll find someone as good as him. He literally started to make fan patches for many Rance games since he retired for some reason, and Alicesoft was searching in a public announcement for a lead game designer which sounded like they were looking for a new TADA.

      I 100% recommend III and IV to those that can stomach the jankiness of old 90s games. IV has some of my favorite art in the series as well.
      You do make a good point, VI is a pretty solid starting point (since most games past Rance 5d up to Sengoku are mostly standalone).
      Pretty much, if you aren't sure you'll like/be interested in the series, start with VI or Sengoku, and if you are already interested or like starting things from the beginning, go with the chronological order of: 01 - 02 - III - IV - (skippable) 4.X - Kichikuou Rance (optional, but it is my favorite game) - Rance 5d - Rance VI - Sengoku Rance - Quest - IX - X.

So let people do what they do as long as it does not hurt anyone. And these games... are games. They hurt no one.

  • @mr.nowhereman8407
    @mr.nowhereman8407 Год назад +4

    The Rance series is important because it places emphasis on it being a game. Thus, there is game play. Before Sengoku Rance, there were an extremely limited number of adult games that had real, quality game play. The only game that predates it, that i can think of, is Brave Soul and that does not have a franchise. More games that would be traditionally classified as games have come out since then and I can't help but feel like it was because of the Rance franchise that the popularity grew.
    That being said, the forced sex aspect was always my least favorite part of the franchise. Like, I get why it's in the series since it is mostly a military expansionist title and combining that with sex makes rape seem practically inevitable. Softening it with the women coming to enjoy it and caring for Rance made it a bit easier for me to swallow when I was younger, but it's still very problematic. I'm not going to sit here and claim the moral high ground since I can enjoy a rape scene every once in a while if it is thematically appropriate. I can differentiate between fiction and reality. It just has a weird vibe in the Rance series because of how heavy that subject is and how lighthearted and cartoonish the over all vibe of the series is.
    Over all, though, it's a good series. I would hit it harder for its story, but honestly? It knows it's a porn game with high quality art and balanced and challenging game play. Those are its strengths. The writing is far better than it really needs to be given its other aspects. Plus, I've recently noticed a weird trend in the manga I consume where the plot was very clearly intended to be a hentai but because it was officially licensed it has to conform to public decency laws and can only get whatever the equivalent to an 'R rating' is. Which means mature themes, violence and boobs, but it can't show explicit sex. which means, despite very clearly being intended to be a hentai, it can't pull the trigger on it. The Rance franchise doesn't have that problem. It knows what it is and it sticks to it.

I'm not bothered by his drive for the ladies. I am bothered by his attidude so to speak. Make it hard to play him as your vocal point character and I've played H-Games with bad guys as the lead. Bunny Black comes to mind as someone Rance Like, but I can accept. He always rubbed me the wrong way with the few games I tried but never finished. All the more power to those who like them though. I much prefer this companies Evenicle games though.

    Part of what you might have overlooked is normalization. For example: "Oh, there's a game where I can bang underage girls from Japan? I guess I'm not alone in those desires, pedophilia is normal in other parts of the world!" It's not okay, and exposing people to that idea can be dangerous. I'm all for fighting censorship, but I feel as though you're missing the point. Glorifying rape, pedophilia, necrophilia, slavery, etc., even as a video game, isn't a good idea. The audience shouldn't be made to feel that that's normal, expected, optional, or otherwise okay. Its not. People WILL internalize it and SOMEONE take it too far. Subjects like that must ALWAYS be demonized and out of reach, even as a form of play-pretend.
    I think I will unsubscribe now, as after your complaints about Hogwarts Legacy not exploring the sexual experiences of literal school children, I am starting to see a disturbing trend in your complaints about various games. I understand your free-love-free-exploration philosophy, I just don't agree with it. Having no boundaries at all only invites chaos. I hope you find what you are looking for in the future.

      This supposed "nomalization" caused by fictional media is a myth. There's not a single (serious) study out there that can prove it in any measure whatsoever.
      No one in their sane mind takes the shit that happens in games as a sign of it being socially accepted. They play the damn games exactly because it's an outlet to desires they know are wrong or taboo in real life.
      Anyone that claims they did some shit everyone and their moms knows it's wrong and blame it on fictional media is either:
      1 - a psychologically unstable person that would just get it's "validation" elsewhere anyway because the problems lies in how their mind works to begin with;
      2 - someone trying to shift the blame and avoid accountability for their own actions.
      You're free to dislike and not consume any sort or media that features content you consider gross or whatever: that is your undeniable right. But don't try to propagate false truths and baseless censorship in the grounds of your own head-canon about how people and this world works.

      @@fernandobarbosa9727 Not a single study, you say? Heh. Sure, okay. Pretty sure proof can't be based on absence.
      Also, your keyword is "sane", not everyone is sane.
      There's plenty of base for censorship depending on the culture, medium, age and moral compass of the consumer, etc. There's nothing baseless about it.
      That's a lot of big words you're throwing around to not know what the fuck you're even talking about. :P

      I think you make some valid points. As someone who was assaulted by a pedophile as a child, I am particularly uncomfortable with the whole lolicon "flavor" (and sexual assault fantasies aimed at men) in manga and anime; some of the fan service involving characters under 10 years old in the Neptunia games felt very wrong to me, as did a few scenes/characters in Evenicle. And having done research in role-play communities in Second Life, I've also witnessed how people fantasizing about a certain illegal/transgressive flavor in RP get lured deeper down the rabbit hole by people actually performing related acts offline. I think this is why I'm a lot less disturbed by fantasy fetishes (futa, hypnosis, tentacles, etc.) than possible ones. That said, I think SPG is the only channel that grapples with any of the issues surrounding NSFW games, and (at least for the time being) I'm proud to be a subscriber and Patreon supporter.

      I'm starting to feel the same. It's getting a bit weird. Personally, I think nonconsensual stuff is a bit easier to be seen as obviously wrong, given violence in video games works similar, but lolicon and shotacon appeal to people with categorical mental disorders. Appealing to that plays into their disorder, and it has real life implications. Noncon fantasies are relatively normal, according to most research into it, but most research has also found that desires toward underage individuals is a mental disorder in almost every category. It threatens children, it is linked to serious issues with impulse control and it is heavily linked to an inability to keep fiction and reality separate. The slippery slope fallacy doesn't justify being against a single line being drawn. You can easily say that games like Hatred are gross, but CoD is fine, even with its peddling of propaganda. And you can easily say lolicon and shotacon are hard nos while being fine with most other content. The slope won't slip or change, because that's a fallacy. People confuse the true end game of people with a slippery slope. Generally, most sites and places that have bans on anything underage still have every other flavor imaginable.
      Hell, in many times and countries, lolicon and shotacon are more acceptable than same sex marriage, despite one being obviously predatory. So, I don't think cries of censorship fly here.
