Only 20 minutes in, but I had to pause to comment on the brilliance of OOC giving out about not being pushed hard enough in his efed. Brilliant. And Jay using his 'stroke' to get him a push is even better.
37:20 the idea of Koji Kitao cutting a shoot promo about wrestling being fake and being serenaded by “Fire Russo” chants from a 1991 Japanese house show crowd is hysterical to me. underrated V1 line
I got my picture taken with Earthquake at a british wrestling show in Southampton 2000... Two things.. He was huge! I am 6 feet.. And he was towering me.. He was also the nicest person you would ever wish to meet. RIP x
I was surprised that no one shat on Heart of Darkness, not because it’s bad (it’s a fast read for the 19th century, some real Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Stephen Crane energy) but because these lads have bad taste in most things not wrestling related. Including not taking note of a wild Funaki in his natural environs.
Id happily see one of these a month on Patreon. Really wish OSW was more regular. I primarily listen to podcasts. But OSW is up there with anything on TV for me.
I'm so glad you posted this. This was the first wrestling show I ever attended live. My little brother and I met the Hart Foundation, Hogan, Tenryu, and Kitao the night before. The next night after this show was the night Kitao tried to shoot on Earthquake Tenta and exposed the business in the ring before walking out and quitting. As for the reason that the Hart Foundation was in their heel gimmick here and other storylines aren't really being followed, it's because we got WWE TV in Japan but, at the time, it ran about 6 months behind what was airing in the States, so I assume there was some little bit of thought put toward maintaining a sense of continuity for the local audience. This was during a time when video rental stores would get tapes of PPVs in a couple months before the relevant storylines aired on our TV.
@@OSW I also remember watching Duggan throw punches and elbows with a full foot of open air between him and his guy. In my pre-adolescent mind, that meant he was on the take and threw his match. I had no doubt that the Yakuza was involved. LOL
🕯️Nab our OSW scented Candles! (they're a real thing that exist 😆) maineventcandles.com/ Now tell me what other scents should we have? and don't say Smelly PARN Man
Wind Argument. Smells like a strong summer breeze (with just a hint of a neurological agent), it lasts way longer than it has any right to, and when it's finished no one is satisfied.
The Koji Kitao v. Earthquake thing is bizarre until you look into Koji and find out he was also expelled from Sumo... and NJPW. His entire life reads like a drama where he is his own worst enemy.
@@Mitch97914 Koji could actually whoop someone's ass, only person worse than Koji was Akira Maeda. That guy almost killed Andre's career, destroyed Riki Chosu's orbital bone with an international stiff kick while his hands were occupied. Just an egotistical ass
Despite making Yokozuna he was regarded as the most shit Yokozuna there has been. Quake-muffin bowed out from sumo later due to his tattoo which would have required a skin graft to get rid of. Was undefeated when he left (and technically isn't undefeated cause some carnie booked him for 3 matches while Quake was on his way back to America and couldn't contend). But yeah Koji screwed Koji.
Randy Savage, came to my birthday with MS Elizabeth, and they were the 2 of the most down to earth people I have ever met!! They were the type of people that made you feel, like you known them all your life. Randy came with his championship belt and let me hold it and take pictures with it. They ate and the way they acted were like actual guest. They didn't act like they were doing us the favor by them showing up. They actually ate with us, and the ate and took cake home and savage swigged a few, they are truly great humble genuine people
Kerry von Erich's pill addictions sadly made him unreliable in the business, and eventually led to his tragic death. Flair talked about it in his book, and how Kerry in one match was so out of it he didn't even know what was happening
I think I remember Flair talking about that. Kerry had him on the ground in a back hammerlock, went to do the handstand knee to the shoulder and fricken fell backwards over Flair.
He lost his foot in an accident. He kept it a secret but if you watch his matches close you can tell. He kept the tassles on his boots to hide his ankle not bending properly.
Gonna go on a limb and say this was your best of the 3 watchalongs: -the Questions worked in breaking up silence when nothing was currently going on with the match -Lots of splicey like a regular episode but the side to side was a nice touch so you could follow both screens -you guys seemed comfortable to be back in the Hogan Era instead of gritting your teeth/wincing like the Hardcore shows lol.
The Von Eric family is a story of tragedy. It's still incredible that I never knew Texas tornado was an amputee until I saw the match where he lost his boot.
@@L1701 if im not mistaken...it was a bout against Lawler...and he pulled Kerrys boot off ...the match pretty much came to a stand sti for a sec...then Kerry grabs the boot...slides under the ring and puts it back on...Lawler still lookin stunned...while announcers no sold it
Not gonna lie - I wasn’t expecting to really like this but I actually pissed myself throughout the whole thing. The high point being The Happening argument unexpectedly cropping back up out of nowhere. Great work, lads. P.S. Fuck OOC for depriving us of Dub for ep 100.
Remember Loch Ness when Haystacks came to WCW? I remember hearing about Giant Haystacks as a kid but had no idea it was the same person until many years later.
Sumo is not only about pushing, it demands a crap-tonne of strength to lift and shove these massive dudes out of the ring. They are also allowed to hit with an open fist and forearms and frequently headbutt each others, they are really damn tough. If you haven't checked out some sumo you really should check a couple of top division bouts, they really are something else.
True. Plus, these dudes are amazingly fast striker. Im pretty sure a yokozuna would decimate most boxers AND mma fighters in a sumo ring. These beast are formidable fighters.
I watched an average sized Englishman take on several large sized sumo wrestlers mostly successfully with judo and leverage. I was very impressed by the athleticism on display.
I know this comment is a million years too late, but "SCUD Missile" is a type of missile developed by the USSR during the Cold War and was used during the Persian Gulf War of 1991, which was heavily covered by the Western media, which used the term constantly during news coverage. Hogan just got that missile name from the news. His "Patriots" were also a reference to a missile, used by the Allied forces during the same war, an anti-ballistic missile system, which means it took out other missiles. So Hogan's joke was that his arms could take out whatever was being thrown at him by the enemy, using his very limited knowledge of the current events on the news.
Lisa's storyline with Bleedin Gums was a good arc in my opinion. I remember tearing up when he died n I still hum "Jazzman" every now n then. Also the Michael Jackson "Happy Birthday Lisa" episode. Not saying these episodes are on anyone's top 5 list, but they are heartfelt with some pretty good songs for your trouble.
The lads were chatting about V1's hilarious test of strength finisher at the moment, but if you watch around the 33:20ish part of the show, Earthquake gets shot into the ropes and clotheslined. Right after it seemed like Kitao is plotting a legitimate punch of some sort & Earthquake dodges it while giving him a knowing glance. Seems like there are a few moments in this match that set up the animosity that played out more the next show.
In defence of the Dan Severn vs Ken Shamrock match being nothing but grappling and a dull match, it was because the commission where they where fighting threaten to shut them down if any punching happened. This was during the dark age of MMA where the was thought of barbaric blood sport.
@@Bale4Bond dude I was at a friend's house a couple years ago and it was a UFC night. I turned it on and my friends neighbor is like "I just can't understand anyone wanting to watch two guys beat the shit out of each other". I'm like huh, well I mean it's been going on thousands of years.....
@@Bale4Bond you imply that MMA is a “barbaric blood sport”...... But I guarantee that more athletes have died or incurred severe damage as a direct result of competing, whether while competing or due to the effects of damage incurred / injury / drugs, in Professional Wrestling compared to MMA during the last 30 years (amount of time MMA has been around roughly’ So which one is more barbaric in the end?
When you mentioned Sgt. Slaughter being old I decided to look him up. I was stunned to see that he was 42 at the time of this show. Even in the mid-80s I thought he was old. I'm now older than he was in 1991 and maybe I'm biased but I still think I look a good decade younger than he does then!
Hilarious that OOC says LOTR are the best movies in the last 20 years and then complains that Godfather 2 is too long lol Also, gangster movies (especially the ones named) do not glorify the mob. They are all about how broken and deranged the lifestyle is and how hypocritical the characters are.
although I guess that's the issue with the portrayal of almost everything: there will be at least some (and sometimes even: a lot of) people that will perceive it differently. I mean, "Scarface" literally is a tale about someone who loses his family and best friend and dies.... and yet is still glorified by a lot of stange people. (and it's also the reason some directors and studios are hesitant to depict any kind of sexual assault/rape in a movie... e.g. the rape scene from "The Accused" is also up on some porn streaming sites. and I'm pretty sure it's not for the reasons that the film intended it to be)
The story behind the Sean O'Haire character getting nixed was because apparently because he bombed his promos at a couple of house shows, and the character ended up getting nixed and they slotted Piper with him instead.
Thanku guys, loved it, whatever it is for the next few episodes I can't wait. Congratulations on the run up to 100!! It's been amazing watching OSW progress, makes me really happy to see where it is today. The success is very well deserved. All the best to u 3, see u soon
1:28:45 There was a fighting promotion called Pancreas, they wear basically tights and kick pads. They had a different set of rules which made it much more entertaining, they have amazing fights including Bas Rutten and Frank Shamrock, as well as his brother, former UFC champion and Former Intercontinental champion Ken Shamrock, who won the King of Pancreas, their top title. Look it up boys!
You can see Macho is already shrinking in terms of muscle mass in his post match promo. I can see why he wanted to be off camera, but I loved that look. Compare him to WCW 2000 Macho.
1:29:00 Steve has probably never seen a Bas Rutten Pancrase match.. same gear brutal kicks and submissions just open hand strikes instead of closed fists. But yes this is a worked match in Pancrase style.
I remember Cody Rhodes coming out for a WrestleMania with that exact look. And his trunks were almost the exact colour of his skin tone, so from far away he looked like a naked ken doll
I just started this video, but I loved the Hardcore Homecoming watch along. You guys only hated it because you had to watch it, but that had a lot of the greatest moments. Funk shoulda taken the money, Sunny being fat, Scorpio's Dr Manhattan impression, the disappointing return of Cronos, New Jack twice because of V1 being racist, giving out about Mick Foley and then marking out for him, the list goes on.
Kabuki was the SWS booker. DiBiase is teaming with Haku because they were both big names in All Japan in the early 80s. Haku, like Quake, joined All Japan straight out of sumo and was trained there, him and Tenryu came up at more or less the same time and at one point he was the #4 guy on the babyface side in All Japan, so he always got elevated spots when he came back to Japan (he teamed with Jumbo Tsuruta on the 1990 show, for example).
Funny story about AJPW and sumo: they was grabbing so many people from sumo at a couple different points that they started playing little political games to try to make it look like they weren't directly stealing them, so that they could keep their relationship with the sumo association from getting too bad. In the 70s Takashi Ishikawa was originally signed to a freelance contract after they'd signed Tenryu and Tonga (Haku) directly. A decade later, Akira Taue was signed through JPW even though by that point almost everybody in JPW had returned to New Japan with Choshu and it basically only existed on paper.
They Live, Rocky 3, The Princess Bride, Indiana Jones, Road House, Highlander, The Dark Knight, Fury Road, to name but a few. All great films with wrestlers in them.
@@STOCK_CAPPS And it featured one of the greatest -- in my opinion -- one-on-one fight scenes on the big screen, with Keith David and the Hot Rod throwing down in the alley.
Cmon it’s season 6!! Lemon tree, Marge the cop, “See my vest”, football in the groin, grandpas sex potion, Bart vs Australia, Homer the clown, Fark homer the great (that clinches it), “so you say you touched her can”, itchy and scratchy land! And yes Jay the best treehouse of all time 🥃
Day number 325 of falling asleep to OSW and waking up to this watch along. I have no idea why RUclips wants me back here, but its getting to the point of it being kind of comforting waking up and pretty much knowing that SWS vs WWF is going to be playing.
I used to do Roleplay boards back when I was 17 too. Though it was Romance of the Three Kingdoms and I wanted to be Liao Hua. To put it in wrestling terms, was going to get him over! However it was kinda hard considering everyone else were Sima Yi/Zhuge Liang/Zhou Yu's/ect and stats were based off of ROTK 7. I remember the guy running it kept asking if I was sure I didn't want to be someone else. XD "Taishi Ci is available" "I want Liao Hua!" "You can be Dian Wei?" "Nope, Liao Hua!"
This watch along was so much better than the hardcore ones. The questions were a great addition. I completely marked out when Blanchardstown was mentioned.
1:58:27 Cool thing to note: Ishinriki (the smaller wrestler) retired, and married a joshi named Utako Hozumi, whose gimmick was a hostess/club girl. They had two sons, named Ishin and Riki, who debuted as pro wrestlers with Dragon Gate, and wore combinations of their mom and dad's gear (black with pink, and feather boas/fans). Riki retired, but Ishin kept wrestling, and eventually got his dad out of retirement for a tag team match against Masaaki Mochizuki and his son, Ryota Mochizuki. Dragon Gate is awesome.
There’s actually been a good few for me… first was Katie Vick. Even at 10 years old, I knew that I just needed a bit of a break after that one. After that it was the exploration of eddies death leading up to the mysterio vs orton match. I loved eddie and was very effected by his death and to hear them, in my mind, make light of it for a feud didn’t sit right with me. Then it was cm punk losing the title bc of Kevin nash and a mitb cash in by noted scumbag Alberto del rio. He’ll in a cell 2019 finish and Aews exploding barbed wire death match round out the list. I put up with an awful lot of bullshit from this sport I’ll tell ya.
@@richardtherichard26 nah, my mind is twisted. I think they should have taken the Katie Vick angle further. Like have HHH say “i f’ed her brains out” and then eat the fake brain matter and spread it all over his body like war paint. And then wear a necklace full of Katie Vick’s bones to the ring. THAT would have been awesome.
@@patrickmoler8025 yeah, but he was more light on his feet: drop kick and all was more common back in the days. Same for Dino Bravo, who turned Hoss later.
Thanks for only setting the reminder the same day. It's really, REALLY annoying to get a reminder in my sub box for a video that won't be available for two weeks. Fucking why? You boys are still the best.
Man i love that you guys show literally every single thing you mention in your videos on here. So awesome!! Every other RUclipsr that has watch alongs just talk or show tiny videos and you either can't see anything and have to watch the video along on a different device or you have to watch it annoyingly in a tiny screen at the bottom or top of the screen and it drives me CRAZY!!! This channel is amazing!! I'll definitely be liking, sharing and telling all my friends about you guys. Thanks so much for incredible old school pro wrestling coverage!!! 😁🤘🏾🇺🇸🤟
43:13 - I’m with OOC that pre neon cowboy Macho Man was his best look. One of the few bright spots of Wrestlemania IV was the four Macho/Liz costume changes. 😎
When you say at the beginning of the WWF in Japan retrospective that the WWF had a working deal with New Japan, you showed a picture of Vince McMahon shaking hands with Shoei Baba, the President of All-Japan. I’m guessing that was unintentional.
I absolutely love V1's spiel about the gaming mags from back in the day, that's a strong memory for me. I used to waste half my paycheck buying those bad boys, and half my life reading them cover to cover! I also remember that sense of loss when I realized they weren't worth it anymore, was pretty gutted. Thanks for the memories lads 🥰
Sorry Brahs......that’s not the British Kendo (Peter Thornley)....Kendo went to stampede and they stole his gimmick. Later on the Crabtrees did something similar when they named Shirley’s nephew as Greg Valentine....we even had a Blackjack Mulligan on World of Sport too. There was also a King Kendo on WoS
I remember a wrestler back in the late 70s or early 80s by the name of "The Tarantula". Did he ever appear on WoS? He did the Ladbrokes Holiday Camp circuits so I'm guessing he wasn't in that league, but he was quite something to see.. long black scruffy hair like a spider!!
This Kendo Nagasaki along with Great Kojika founded Big Japan Pro Wrestling (BJW). So two rather highly regarded japanese wrestlers founded one of the worlds most well known deathwatch promotions
V1 spot on about how sad it is that there's not anything like a modern day Savage - noone absolutely so bizarre that you don't question why it works. There are likeable babyfaces and a few pouting heels but it's generally a wall of interchangeable beards and speedos.
The answer to "did Macho Man turn face at the end of his WM VII match?" is very much a "well......yes and no". Yes, he dropped Sherri and had a tearful reunion with Ms. Elizabeth, yes, he dropped the "Macho King" gimmick, and he stopped being *outright* heelish, but for several weeks afterwards, on commentary, he still maintained *somewhat* of a heel nature, and would often side with the heels (though not to, say, Bobby Heenan or Jesse Ventura lengths) when storylines were progressing in the ring (basically a foil to Piper, who would cheer the faces). He pretty much was in a "tweener" holding pattern in the aftermath of WM VII. Once they started building up to his proposing to Ms. Elizabeth is when he dropped the shades of heel from his work at the time. Also, from what I understand, the SWS commentators apparently mention that "Oh yeah, Warrior retired Macho Man, but Macho Man is only doing this because he's fulfilling a contract obligation" in order to get around the "BUT HE SHOULD BE RETIRED!" plothole.

Mental to me that Funaki was seconded by Minoru Suzuki and the lads didn't notice at all because they were talking about classic novels lmao
@@fuzzydunlop7928 I hate that book. And reading Chinua Achebe's lecture about it sealed the deal for me.

Id happily see one of these a month on Patreon. Really wish OSW was more regular. I primarily listen to podcasts. But OSW is up there with anything on TV for me.
It used to be way longer between shows before patreon. Now they have editors who help with parts of the show.
Absolutely
That's so cool to read! That's brilliant man, lovely memories. A winner is you and your bro!

The Koji Kitao v. Earthquake thing is bizarre until you look into Koji and find out he was also expelled from Sumo... and NJPW. His entire life reads like a drama where he is his own worst enemy.

Despite making Yokozuna he was regarded as the most shit Yokozuna there has been. Quake-muffin bowed out from sumo later due to his tattoo which would have required a skin graft to get rid of. Randy Savage, came to my birthday with MS Elizabeth, and they were the 2 of the most down to earth people I have ever met!! Kerry von Erich's pill addictions sadly made him unreliable in the business, and eventually led to his tragic death. Flair talked about it in his book, and how Kerry in one match was so out of it he didn't even know what was happening
Uh oh, mark alert lol
@@vargas1569 You're using the word wrong dumbass.
I think I remember Flair talking about that. Kerry had him on the ground in a back hammerlock, went to do the handstand knee to the shoulder and fricken fell backwards over Flair.
There's a Kerry vs Flair match where Kerry does a sunset flip on a man who isn't there.
He lost his foot in an accident. He kept it a secret but if you watch his matches close you can tell. He kept the tassles on his boots to hide his ankle not bending properly.

-the Questions worked in breaking up silence when nothing was currently going on with the match
-Lots of splicey like a regular episode but the side to side was a nice touch so you could follow both screens
-you guys seemed comfortable to be back in the Hogan Era instead of gritting your teeth/wincing like the Hardcore shows lol.

I'm here for the OOC character development.
That's a great catch
In defence of the Dan Severn vs Ken Shamrock match being nothing but grappling and a dull match, it was because the commission where they where fighting threaten to shut them down if any punching happened. This was during the dark age of MMA where the was thought of barbaric blood sport.

Hilarious that OOC says LOTR are the best movies in the last 20 years and then complains that Godfather 2 is too long lol
Also, gangster movies (especially the ones named) do not glorify the mob.

Earthquake was awesome. I wish he had trimmed down a little because I think it would have put him over the top with his talent.
