I have to admit I disagree with you lads on the five elbow drops point. Overkill? Yeah, but I saw it as part of the story Savage was telling, that the Macho King was completely broken and thus had to be put down via career-ending match. It's why he lost to just the simple shoulder tackle and not the Gorilla press/splash. If you want the villain resoundingly defeated, to the point where he's driven away from the ring, then it was an effective way of doing it, I felt.
@Reyes R Tellez Woah, comment blast from the past. Honestly, I don't think a kickout was needed there. First off, it was '91, and finisher kickouts were not a major feature of US wrestling yet. Secondly, it'd still contradict the story Savage wanted to tell: that in his King persona he had utterly fallen apart, a complete ball of delusions and paranoia, and it was destroying him from the inside. The Macho King had to be destroyed, broken, and humiliated, so that the Macho *Man* could be brought back by Elizabeth.

Steve said that WWE have spun Slaughter into a legend, well he is, just not for the 1991 feud where he was 42 years old and way past his prime, actually, Slaughter was a huge draw for the WWF during his 1984 feud with the Iron Sheik, and a pretty big draw in other companies as well.
Slaughter IS a legend, the guy had nuclear heat in his first WWF run in the early 80s as a heel, was a hugely over babyface in 1984, 2nd only to Hogan, and had also had good runs in the likes of Mid-Atlantic and the AWA. Don't judge Slaughter on this run when he was in his early 40s.
You're right. When I think of Sergeant Slaughter, I think of his AWA days and those wild matches with Wahoo McDaniel. His 90s run in the WWF showed that he still had it, but it certainly wasn't the best of his career.
Slaughter was a legend. He and Pat Patterson also had one of the most brutal pre-hardcore hardcore alley fight matches off all time. It was brilliant and told an amazing story. Also Slaughter was a member of G.I. Joe, he was one of the most well known wrestler outside of wrestling, even people who didn’t follow wrestling. He was over.

Yeah it's one of those most ridiculous stories ever. Bruce Pricard still swears that was the reason the show was moved. As security there would be easier to handle and cheaper then a stadium show. But then why is there empty seats at this show still? You cant sell out a small venue, but you would of sold out the largest sports stadium in the US at the time?
That’s not what Bruce said. He understood that the angle bombed and didn’t think it was tasteful at the time, but it was Vince’s call. He also said that whether or not the Coliseum sold out, the company wouldn’t have been able to justify paying that much for the security at the original show. The Super Bowl had taken place in Tampa two months prior and the proposed costs for increased security detail in and around the stadium was astronomical - the US government ended up agreeing to foot the security bill for the NFL, but (obviously) wouldn’t do it for the WWF.

To think of what she’d have looked like by now (I can’t help but think about what fans were like when she was gone from the WWF, by September 1992, one month after that year’s SummerSlam, when her and Macho Man Randy Savage even divorced - in the storyline and even in real life). Sarge use to get bigger pops in the 80s than Hogan or anyone else. When Hulkamania started Sgt. slaughter was a bigger Babyface than Hogan. In the 80s Sarge was a "real" wrestler. People thought he was totally legit.

I would say Snuka was still getting main eventer pops at that time (83/84) even after Hulk was champ. Actually Vince did all he could to downplay Snuka and push him down or even shelve Superfly latter half 84/early 85 before he was gone altogether from the company. Snuka should of tagged w Hulk in Mania 1 but Vince didn’t want him with Hulk for the pop factor and he needed Mr T to help sell tickets.

@kmiller9959 lol exactly I guarantee there will be a random shoot in 2019 and it will become 75ccs and a 12 hour operation to save his arm.
Nice! Wondered why they got jobbed out so bad in this PPV
It was pointless to job them out like that when lod should of just taken on demolition anyway. They never resolved that feud anyway. Then they could of built power and glory a bit more to have them lose to lod when they were champs. Apart from disasters and money inc they had no one to go against anyway.
Elizabeth, Macho Man, Sherri, Warrior- 4 people from 1match all gone, that's crazy!!!
Drugs and hard living, mate
Plus Heenan and Monsoon...
Watching this again reminds how talented Alex Drebek is and just how much we'll miss him after almost 40 years of being on TV every night.
Alex was an international treasure. His charisma, likability and refreshingly approachable attitude despite being one of the most famous and recognizable people on the planet was inspiring. The whole world is a darker place without Mr. Trebek in it 😔
1:29:13 "You again" might just be my favourite OSW line... That and "Are you ready to enter hell" to patients.
Andre can't move through space, so he has to use his warp drive to cause space to fold in front of him, giving the illusion that he's leaning down to the ring.
oh please, its not leaning, its "counter balancing"
Kim kardasian was at WrestleMania too invite all the whores and porn stars but chyna can’t get a solo induction in HOF SMH
All the interviewers are dead. Crazy
Being a bit cruel to Sgt Slaughter, his career before he came back for this nonsense is what makes him a legend, but Vince can't take credit for that so this is the crap they have to talk about.
Without doubt brother. Sarge was one of the biggest stars of the 80s.
A little cruel? Slaughter busted his rear during this run and breathed back life into Hogan, who had gone stale. He really did a great job.
The guy is a legend. Vince told him he could come back if he turned heel. I think Vince only made him do that to punish him for doing the GI Joe thing and going to WCW. But we all still loved Sarge anyway. We were glad when he got this over and was able to go back to being USA. Though, it was never the same. Vince broke Kayfabe pretty bad with this.
Yeah they did the same thing to Andre who was barely able to walk much less perform in the late 80's and early 90's hell he died 3 years after his last match which just shows the shape he was in
Slaughter is still a great worker here, this is arguably the best WrestleMania main event up to this point.
Hogans face in the intro when him and sarge look at the camera together is hilarious lol
Legendary lol.
38:18 "It's the Dead Man...versus the Undertaker."
Most beautiful burn ever.
WrestleMania VII was in many ways, the beginning of the WWF's slide, as the exploited Gulf War angle set up a lousy Hulk Hogan vs. Sgt. Slaughter main event. However, the show stealer was the retirement match between Ultimate Warrior and Randy Savage, which was one of the best booked matches in WWF history.
This definitely started the downward slide in quality and overuse of Hogan and formulas.
Think that proves that even the worst Manias will have at least one gem that makes the show worth seeing. Think that may have been Warriors best ever match. Just ahead of the Rude Slam 89 match.
Bored Now this one has 3 gems. Rockers match, blindfold match, and loser leaves town match

It was a retirement match, not loser leaves town.

Insane to not put LOD against Demolition, when the two matches they went with instead were awful matchups.
Right! Still could’ve been a squash as the Demolition were breaking up anyways.
Sherri looked awesome.
Whopper arse, great promo, knew and loved the business and protected it.
Sherri was magnificent.
Sensational. But Scary.
I got a chance to see Sherri at house shows in Los Angeles Sports Arena. During Hogan vs Savage feud, Hogan would lift her up for an atomic drop, exposing her thong as her dress fell open with legs kicking in the air. As a teen, never forgot that!

There was a promo for wrestlemania 7 in LA during wrestlemania 6. And they still couldn't sell out. A lot of people were expecting a warrior hogan rematch to sell out such a big venue. Anyway. Great vids brah!
Were you there at the Skydome April 1st 1990?.. I too remember seeing the promo spot for wrestlemania 7 on the Jumbotron
Slaughter was a legit main eventer... five years before this, give or take. By the time of the title reign, though? God no.
He was just a guy to get the title from Warrior to Hogan
There IS something a wrestler can do in a blindfold match that I haven't seen yet: They can SMELL their opponent. The opponent can either be a smelly slob like Bastion Booger or one can drench the other in some other odor. I'm astounded Martel didn't spray Jake with Arrogance at some point. I mean: The idea was right there in the feud, wasn't it?
Great idea! A ‘Won By A Nose’ Match 😉😁

Joe N 4 years late, but this comment deserves acknowledgement
I disagree
@Reyes R Tellez Woah, comment blast from the past. Honestly, I don't think a kickout was needed there. First off, it was '91, and finisher kickouts were not a major feature of US wrestling yet. Secondly, it'd still contradict the story Savage wanted to tell: that in his King persona he had utterly fallen apart, a complete ball of delusions and paranoia, and it was destroying him from the inside. The Macho King had to be destroyed, broken, and humiliated, so that the Macho *Man* could be brought back by Elizabeth.

He was the best
People have mentioned Greg Valentine coming vack in 93/94 following the mention of this being his last pov appearance... but he actually wrestled at the following SummerSlam ‘91 ppv vs IRS.
I know I'm almost three years late, but this. Slaugher is a low-end all time great and his '91 heel run is probably the worst part of his career.
Slaughter was in G.I. Joe....nuff said! Lol
I still think the picture with Sarge and Saddam is some damn good photoshopping. Damn good.
It was a real picture trust you been blind to da world for years
It’s hilarious
I got into WWF as a kid from wrestlemania 8 onwards and was a hitman fan. So it's good to get to see what came before. And the piss taking and clowning around of the guys making the video cracks me up. I'm totally addicted to these osw reviews now. Awesome work guys. I remember being disappointed with wrestlemania 9 but watching on these reviews made it hilarious. Great channel guys consider me subbed and definitely a fan.
Great review! There were actually some gems on this card. Agree the Blindfold match was very enjoyable, and the Warlord-Bulldog was a nice piece of booking. I enjoyed the tag title match personally and don't mind the Nasty Boys too much. Its just a shame the retirement match wasn't the Main Event!
I remember my dad showing me this on vhs tape and he said he was there as a kid he met British bulldog months after and few months ago I met bulldogs son
Than *** not then
Bruce Prichard can be funny at times, but he's so far up Vince's ass that he knows what Vince had for breakfast.
53:08 - He just really loved the jacket
So surprised you didn't "splicey splicey" Mr.Burns saying "I really like the vest" after his masive musical about his jackets made of animals
That's more of Maffew's thing. There was a BM ending of Vince McMahon featuring See My Vest.
As a kid, I hated Slaughter. As an adult looking back, I find his work to be really exciting. How do you not enjoy the way he takes an Irish whip into the turnbuckle?
He was past his prime here but watching his older WWWF/AWA stuff the way he bumped and bled like a maniac was fantastic. His stuff with Sheik, Patterson, Backlund etc is great
Yeah I was immensely impressed with his work watching this match all these years later. He takes the bumps and sells like a boss
I loved watching his interviews later talking about it all. He put in the work and it's easy to see why they've always had a spot for him.
American hero turned Iraqi sympathizer is actually a really interesting idea for a character.

Best I've seen ever!
Love the C64! :-)
I'm mystified as to why vince thought it would be a good idea to hold Wrestlemania at the LA Coliseum in the first place because the weather in LA in late march/early april is generally either cold, wet or cold and wet and you can bet that if they had managed to get 100.000 people into the coliseum the show would have been a disaster because it was raining and cold that night and 100.000 cold wet uncomfortable people could easily become unruly.
I could see them doing a Summerslam there but not a Wrestlemania.
😂😂😂😂 la “cold & wet” you little Californians are so cute in how little you know about the world around you 🤣🤣🤣 never mind they’ve literally done outdoor manias in seattle… New Jersey… no LA gets too cold and wet in March. That’s so embarrassing 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤡🤡🤡🤡

It’s especially sad when you think of what happened to Elizabeth (heck, wait until the 1st of May next year - that’ll be the 20th anniversary of her death). To think of what she’d have looked like by now (I can’t help but think about what fans were like when she was gone from the WWF, by September 1992, one month after that year’s SummerSlam, when her and Macho Man Randy Savage even divorced - in the storyline and even in real life). I don’t even know why the two divorced, post-SummerSlam 1992.
The Nasty Boys's celebration at the end of their match was brilliant!

Jake the Snake is so so good with his promo's , a shame he never got a world title run . great character .
He was an unreliable high functioning drug addict.
He didn't need a title, his character was over enough.
He would've if it weren't for the fans cheering DDT, DDT after he gave Hulk the DDT on the Snake Pit. That was supposed to be the beginning of a Hulk/Jake the Snake feud, in which Jake might've became Champion, but of course the fans were supposed to cheer Hogan's name so McMahon quickly and quietly dropped the idea.
Didn't need the strap. Too good for it.
Jake was due a run against Hogan in 89 I think but Hogan fucked off to film no holds barred
They SERIOUSLY ought to try that "blindfold match" idea in UFC!

I wish I could effectively express how awesome this idea is. ❤️
Regarding Bossman, He's not nearly as massive here as he was in 1988-89.
Hulk2k6 - Big Bossman’s size change confuse me. Not so much from 88-89 to this event & pure weight loss change, but more from the beginning to the end.
Big Bubba Rogers/WWF debut Bossman seemed Huge in height and overall size. His last few years ( when he was in black instead of the CO uniform ) he seemed just like a slightly over average sized guy.
In the beginning he seemed 6’6 and later 6’2

Rusty Kuntz he had an angle where he was the worlds strongest man and did some bench press contest with the Body
William Freemon Yea & I mentioned that. It was the original (1988) Rumble that happened at. When he first came in (late 86) the WWF he had a minor beef with the Rougeau bros who were at the time the Canadian baby faces and he was the Canadian heel but nothing major happened with that storyline.

I find it amazing how less than a year before WrestleMania VII, Sgt. Slaughter was still in Verne Gagne's dying AWA. His last appearance was on the June 1, 1990 ESPN TV taping in Rochester, Minnesota.
That’s misleading, while yes he was BACK in awa in 1990, he had already had 2 stints in wwf prior to that final run in vernes awa. Being managed both times by the much maligned and often forgotten “grand wizard”. And having lengthy feuds with then champion bob backlund. You have to remember in the late 80’s awa was very similar to wcw in the late 90’s with guys jumping back and forth to Stamford seemingly on a weekly basis. So while yes just 9 months prior to this slaughter was wrestling in awa the wwf fans were fairly familiar with him despite his last long term stint in wwe coming all the back in 85
@@richardtherichard26 I know he was in the WWF before. I'm just saying it was amazing that in less than a year, he went from being in a dying company to main eventing WrestleMania.

WrestleMania VII in L.A. was probably indeed the last TRUE event of that era…Hogan not only looked the same, but there were virtually no scattered “boo’s” yet for him from the crowd. Heenan still managed, the Hart Foundation, Rockers (without tease of split), and (kind of)-Demolition were still together. Warrior and Von Erich were there before their drama. Undertaker was still a newcomer in a squash match. Shirtless Macho (King) Man with Liz before “retirement.” Tito (not El Matador) Santana, Greg Valentine. The WWF logo-light above the entrance curtain…this was pretty much it as the very last event to still feel 100% totally from the original 80’s era

Hearing the names on the "Death Toll" is super depressing. Especially since this review, Warrior, Piper, Heenan, and Neidhart have passed away as well.
Animal died in 2020.
Heenan died? He had lost a lot of weight and didn't look well at all. It doesn't surprise me.

Sarge use to get bigger pops in the 80s than Hogan or anyone else. When Hulkamania started Sgt. slaughter was a bigger Babyface than Hogan. In the 80s Sarge was a "real" wrestler. People thought he was totally legit.
Problem is by this point he was fully past his prime, and them trying to capitalize on him being in the cultural zeitgeist failed miserably.
Like the dumbasses who made Angry Birds or Slenderman movies over a decade past them being popular. >__>
I would say Snuka was still getting main eventer pops at that time (83/84) even after Hulk was champ. Actually Vince did all he could to downplay Snuka and push him down or even shelve Superfly latter half 84/early 85 before he was gone altogether from the company. I’m pretty sure that was a Rodney King reference, who had just had the crap beaten out of him by the LA Police.
In case you were wondering what Mr. Perfect's "56 free swipes" reference... Heenan was giving the LAPD shit over the 1992 LA riots, and Perfect's line referenced what started it; Rodney King was struck 56 times by LAPD officers caught on video in 1991.

In my alternate universe, Davey Boy beat the Warlord's full nelson challenge before Wrestlemania, and in a heartwarming display, the Warlord showed how impressed he was, shook the Bulldog's hand, and turned face.
Over the next couple of weeks they would save each other from unfair heel beatdowns, until finally becoming the awesome, beefy tag team, "The Dogs of War." They would later go on to beat the Nasty Boys for the championship, and hold onto them before an amazing clash with the Legion of Doom.
