Like many other people involved with the show now, Peter Capaldi was a fan of the original version first. The difference is, at his age that means he was a kid watching the show RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING, never missing an episode. All those early stories the BBC wiped still exist in his head. So as you can imagine, getting this job was basically the biggest thing of his whole career. And that joy appears so much throughout his run.
but remember Doctor Who was supposed to be part sci fi part history, Marco Polo, The Aztecs, The Reign of Terror, The Romans, The Crusades, The Time Meddler, The Massacre, The Smugglers, The Highlanders and i am still hoping they do history stories
I can explain those worries to you. A lot of "fans" jumped ship after 11's regeneration, not even giving 12 a chance simply because he's old and not a 'hot young guy' like 10 or 11. Of course, there was quite a bit of time between the Christmas special and the first episode, so the plot about Clara's indecision you see here is actually a direct reference to the state the fandom was in at the time. It was the show literally screaming at us "He's still the same guy, just give him a chance!" Considering what a great actor Capaldi is, it's sad that they had to go to such lengths.
Every time Sesska appologizes for crying I want to hug her. You don't need to apologize, we're all been there, too! That's part of what makes this channel so wonderful, we can feel it all again.
Should have seen me. I was bawling my eyes out in a theater full of people, both at 11's regeneration into 12 and the phone call in this episode. May not have been the smartest move watching it in public.
Fun Fact: The mask Twelve pulls off is of Matt Smith's face. They'd planned to use another, but it broke so they used an old Matt one instead. No idea what it was for.
I tend to see Tennant's 10th Doctor as having a child-like wonder. Smith's 11th Doctor is the "teenage" doctor, bombastic, always having wild and crazy adventures. Capaldi is the "grownup" Doctor, more serious and slightly cynical, but deep down they are all still the same person with the same kind heart and looks at the universe in wonder.
@@SyberSmoke68 Beat me to it by 2 years, damn. And so is 13 a mid-life crisis sufferer? Would explain the overabundance of companions, surface level connection to them, and lack of character direction. Perhaps this is all part of Chibnall's plan, and eventually 14 will be a wise parent figure.
I am so very deeply sorry this reaction took so long to get out. I don't know if anyone will believe me but I swear I have been trying to edit this since Thursday night with the plan of getting it out on Friday. It has been frustrating to say the least. As I say in the beginning of this video, you'll be getting one reaction every week. This one counts as last week's so don't worry you'll still get episode 2 at some point in this week. I apologize again. I hope you love the reaction! Much Love, Sesska
No probs I didnt expect it til at least late Jan /Feb, anyway.. Oh and I knew the Matt scene would get you. If you font like the 12/13th Capaldi dr, no big deal Cant be expected to like all his personalities.... Capaldis dr was harsh.. N some parts I didn't like the way he was written
I remember I stopped watching when Smith left. I was such an idiot. When people began praising Series 9, back in 2015 I thought that I should probably start watching Doctor Who again. I rewatched Matt's last episode, as a small refresh, and began the Capaldi era. Haven't regretted it since. He's my second favourite now.
Its completely warranted. I went through a mourning phase for Eleven. He's My Doctor. But I loved Twelve anyway. I mean how can you not love Capaldi right? He's absolutely brilliant in everything.
I like that she looks him in the eyes. When she was talking to the War Doctor she mentioned that all the Doctors had the same eyes (in the spiritual sense), so when she takes the time to look 12 in the eyes, she sees he’s still the same person.
You may like this story: On Capaldi’s first day, Jenna went to his dressing room and brought him down to the set. She knew what it was like to be new to this world. One of the best relationships on the show ever...
Clara really was us in this episode, as you said a bit, which really helped. She's seen all the other incarnations, so she knew the Doctor changed, but it was still hard for her to see "her" Doctor change. I loved how the episode tried to smooth the transitioning with Twelve saying he was the same man, and Eleven showing up, saying that Twelve/Capaldi was even more scared than Clara/us and encouraged her/us to embrace him, it was really sweet.
The end of this episode was absolutely brilliant. I love how they knew that both the character of Clara and the audience may have a tough time accepting him. That phone call served to let both Clara and the audience give the new Doctor a chance and accept him. Loved that part! So excited to see you watch this Doctor. There are so many good episodes. And I'm sure much more crying to come. :)
I only just saw this episode the other day (thanks, BBC America), and I thought it was terribly cruel to bring Matt Smith back for a scene...looking at the original airdates, fans had probably had plenty of time to 'grieve' for Matt Smith's 11, and prepare themselves for full-on Peter Capaldi's 12, and then, here, at the end of 12's intro, bam! that 11 wound is slashed back open, at least that's how I felt...not that I wasn't glad to see him, and crying as hard as Jess...damn you, Moffat! (in the most loving way)
You're always genuine. That surprise phone call... we were all in knots. This episode: "Five-foot-one and crying, you never stood a chance." Never a truer word spoken.
"It's like I'm trying to tell myself something" is actually a pretty well established theory. The theory goes that each regeneration is a reaction to the last, like how 5 was very quiet and almost meek, but had so much tragedy in his run that when he regenerated into 6 he became almost the opposite, loud, brash and bombastic.
Another thing to add to this theory that i heard about was that 10 was a reaction to jack, 9 saw that rose was being swooned by his space boyfriend rockstar personality and so thats what 10 became
Great reaction. Welcome to Twelve Jess and i must say Eleven being in the end of the episode...i knew you were going to lose it 😂 Look forward to seeing what comes next.
I have never related more than when you started bawling as soon as Matt’s face appeared. It’s so hard to let him go. I don’t think it’s possible to not miss his face, to wish for just a bit longer..... This episode was exactly what was needed, I think, and hopefully the Doctor’s legacy is left in good hands.
In this is the episode Capaldi proved himself as The Doctor to me. Right at the moment when he looks at the camera. As I contemplate whether or not he killed or convinced the robot to kill itself, I knew, I KNEW, this was The Doctor. This made transition from 11th to 12th relatively easy for me. What do you think? they were both lying about their basic programming, that's how The Doctor knew one of them was lying for sure, he was lying himself, but he didn't know if the robot was lying, too, It was so deep, and interesting, on to my questions, do you think that The Doctor convinced the robot into suicide? or just killed it himself? and which is more creepy? The Doctor killing it, or The Doctor convincing it into killing itself? ...And 11th's phone call at the end just killed me after all that. Beautiful.
I'm glad you liked the story telling of this episode. Capaldi's Doctor gets a lot very well told stories, that dig deeper into who the Doctor is. This first episode is a great litmus test for how people will feel about the Capaldi era of the show.
I disagree in part. He gets a lot of really well told stories, but I'd argue this isn't quite as great of a litmus test due to the fact that the character and his run come into their own next season. Season 8 is... quite varying in quality and tone, whereas seasons 9 and 10 are both really good (with only a couple of missteps) and Capaldi's Doctor has truly progressed a lot (basically season 8 is the season of 12 growing into himself, in a similar way to how 7 truly found his footing in his second season, and spent season 24 growing into the 7th Doctor)
What a wonderful treat before bed. Don't worry, we're all a little sceptical when there's a new Doctor, especially when the one that just left was your favourite. Peter Capaldi is one of my favourite Doctors, and I'm sure you'll love him too. Some great stories ahead. xxx
"I'm still in mourning" Darling it's completely normal and fine that you are feeling that, congratulations you are now a fully fledged Whovian because it's a thing every Whovian eventually goes through ❤ You fall in love with a Doctor, then that Doctor regenerates, you mourn your Doctor and don't know how you feel about the current Doctor and then eventually you'll love or at least like the current Doctor and the cycle continues 😅 I think that's what people was trying to explain to you with what you mentioned in the start but I'm not sure, at least when I commented "I do hope you come to love Twelve" in the last video, I was referring to the cycle 😁❤
I've been a subscriber for 3 years and being a whovian since 2005 from series 1 onwards it has been an honour and a pleasure to experience the show with u and watch your reactions and trust me Peter's seasons will surprise you and they'll sadden you but most of all they will set in motion events that will forever evolve the show and we nay all of us whovians must go on this journey together so thank you for being awesome and may I just say ... Geronimo
I love Peter Capaldi as he's an amazing actor and Doctor. He brought back the more stern alien qualities of the classic era Doctors such as the great William Hartnell. The 12th Doctor is almost like a reset back to the original incarnation and maybe that's because he's had a new set of regeneration's. Peter Capaldi is wonderful at subtlety as he can give you an emotion with one look. The scene where the Doctor says to the android there's nothing of the original you left and looks at his reflection is just such a great moment because he could be talking about himself. I also was sad to see 11 return with that phone call. Excellent reaction.
MyAbridged I never liked Missy Spoilers spoilers spoilers I thought her reveal was far too obvious, series 8 had my least favourite arc, though in general I preferred the Davies method of subtly hinting at the arc until it’s all revealed at the end. Moffat’s arcs have been lacking in subtlety in my opinion.
That whole scene was also an oblique demand to all those Doctor Who "fans" who couldn't accept that the Doctor's actually changing his face from time to time. "You can't see me, can you? You look at me and you can't see me." There were a lot of people who stated that Capaldi is too old for this role and that they couldn't accept him as the Doctor after Matt Smith. I love Matt Smith and he portrayed my favorite Doctor, but Capaldi was a brillant Doctor as well. You'll see and you're gonna fall in love with him as well. I think the relationship between the 12th Doctor and Clara is one of the most emotional ones, you're gonna have a great storyline in front of you.
The truth is that they were Matt Smith fans, not Doctor Who fans. So when he left, they were no longer interested, especially as the replacement was not another young, energetic, attractive man. A lot of viewers left, especially young girls. I love Capaldi but with the exception of a few episodes, and despite the fact that some of those were some of the best of New Who, Season 8 was pretty poor. That's a long time to try to hang on to an already skeptical audience.
You know if there's one thing Moffat did better than Davies (In my opinion) it's regenerations. Rose mostly adapts to Ten pretty quickly after Nine goes, not so here where we and the character are in the same boat And it's not like with Ten where his regeneration kinda screws over Eleven a little bit, no, he does everything he can to make sure to show that Twelve and Eleven are equal, that Twelve is different but still a worthy successor,, and that Eleven whole-heartedly supports Twelve. Even if I think the plot about Clara coming to terms with it was a bit strong at times, I think it's more to the episode's favour that it's a major part of the story.
The phone call from Eleven at the end feels like Matt Smith telling the audience to have faith in Peter Capaldi, that he'll be great we just need to trust him. Awww!! And somehow from that moment on you trust Twelve a bit more, until he absolutely captivates you..!
I think the writers knew it was gonna be a really rough transition from 11 to 12. And it's cool that this story was basically about everyone struggling with it. Clara's having a hard time the Doctor himself is having a hard time and the audience probably was having a difficult time too. And then having 11 come in and say "hey it's okay." It was nice. Back when this was all airing for the first time we knew (or at least I did.) That Capaldi was coming well in advance. So when the Christmas special came I was prepared. 11 wasn't my favorite but I did love him and it was really sad to see him go. But I had months and months and months to prepare. And even though I was sad I was super excited for Capaldi and I just had this feeling I was gonna love 12. And 12 has very quickly become tied for my favorite Doctor. I totally understand though if you or others don't love 12 like I do. That's what's great about Doctor Who. There is a Doctor for pretty much anyone. If you don't share my love for 12 I'm not gonna tell you your wrong or get upset. You shouldn't feel pressured in anyway. I'm excited to see what you think of him going forward but I won't be angry or offended if you feel differently than I do about him. I hope you like 12 but if you don't or if you do but not as much as me than hey that's alright. Either way I enjoy seeing what you think even if you think differently. Thanks for being awesome!
Here's a fun fact: The new opening sequence graphics were actually created by a fan. This guy did it on his own spare time and posted it to youtube, not as something he was trying to submit for consideration, just as a sort of graphical "fanfic". (And iirc, he used Matt's and Jenna's names in the credits). The showrunners liked it so much they actually used it! (Presumably they paid the guy for it.)
Small detail, the mask 12 pulls off is a mask of Matt Smith. Don’t know why they had that, but still, I like that nice little touch. A little something to represent that this is still the same person as before, that it’s still the Doctor.
Appearently they had a different mask but it broke and they didht have time to remake it. So with a Matt Smith mask hanging around they just used that one. They had used Matt Smith masks for something I remember seeing them use it on one of those Doctor Who Confidential or something similar to that.
I love when they are trying to get the doctor to sleep and he's freaking out about their british accents, i love that madame vastra immediately jumps into a scottish accent to make him feel more comfortable. 🥺
I legit became a patron today so I got to see the full earlier! What a wonderful reaction! I'm so excited for your journey with 12, he really is something special. 11 is my Doctor too, but I do think that they handled this transition really well! 12's run is a whopper! Here we go! :D
After this current roller coaster of emotion,I really hope you get to meet Matt Smith some day! And from this reaction I think your open to what Capaldi will bring and there are still great episodes to come!
Deep Breath is perhaps one of the top 10 Capaldi Doctor episodes IMO: When Capaldi was announced I recalled ALOT of resentment for because he was "old" and wouldn't be as much a draw which is BS.this felt like it was an episode that just slightly broke that fourth wall in addressing those issues and that Vastra and Clara scene felt like a one on one with its viewers to remind them WHO the Doctor is and all the while throughout the episode present us a story. And then there is the phone call. I feel like that was done in hopes of IF someone was NOT CONVINCED in Capaldi's role, they would listen to a voice of reason in that being Eleven himself telling Clara (the viewers at home) don't be afraid of change. Be there. And he even said goodbye this time. Like you I REALLY grew to love 11 even nore than 10 even!! Although 11 had that wimsey and magic about him, I cannot REALLY Think of anything of how to describe Capaldi to you as of yet but all I will say he did take Matt's spot. But at the end of the Day, HE IS The Doctor. It can be Eccleston, Tennant, Smith, Capaldi or even the new Jodie Whitaker but at the end of it though, they are and will ALWAYS BE the Doctor :)
There is *always* alot of resentment for the next Doctor. The trend is always this "I love the nth Doctor! He can't leave!!!!" "I Don't LIKE THE NEW GUY! HE is not my Doctor!" "eh, He's ok....." "Noooooo!!!!!!!!! I Love the N+1th Doctor! He can't leave!" I think that the comparison is that 10 is the dashing hero in a sci-fi opera, 11 is whimsy sci/fantasy, 12 functioned best in that kinda sci-fi horror way.
Finally, my favorite incarnation of the Doctor is here! You know your love for Eleven? This is how much I love Twelve, so I'm very excited to go on this journey with you. Funny thing is, I didn't like Twelve at first. Ten was always my doctor. And now when I think that Capaldi is the Doctor no more... My own preferences aside (as different Doctors are loved by different people thanks to certain quirks and personality traits), Peter Capaldi was definitely a class above all in the acting department. And his chemistry with Jenna Coleman - of the charts. This is where my love for Clara has started as well. And oh god, Missy! She is everything.
Oh wow I didn't remember Capaldi already had an awesome speech on his first episode. Capaldi is the king of speeches tbh. I just love how Twelve is so concious about how he keeps changing and that he fears that he's changing too much, to the point of not being a good person anymore. So at the end he's literally begging people (Clara) to see him as the man she knows he is - as the Doctor. Twelve is seeking his identity so much and goddamn I just love his journey so much...
Have you watched Sense8? McCoy has a great role in it, and it's a blast to see him in such an adult-oriented show after a half century of family friendly roles.
The 7th Doctor is pretty much the most dangerous and powerful the Doctor's ever been, as well as probably the most dark and alien of them, yet that really doesn't come across when you first see him, such a great actor, and so many great stories...
When you look at the camera at the most emotional moments it really hits hard but I think makes that connection with all of us as if we're right in the room with you. So powerful...
A brilliantly written episode appropriately dealing with the struggles in coming to terms with loss and change. The scene with Clara desperately trying to hold her breath for me was incredibly acted and directed and suggested a slightly more adult or darker atmosphere for the new season. Your reactions are wonderful Jess and analysis is absolutely on-the-money.
I go back and rewatch the Doctor's conversation with the half-faced man several times every season. There's more and more to read into it as 12 progresses.
23:09 holy crap, I haven't watched Deep Breath since it aired, and I'm shocked at how "It cannot end" "It has to, you know it does. There's only one way out." carries through all the way to Twelve's final episode... what an amazing Doctor!
When I first discovered Doctor Who as a teenager, the internet did not exist. I lived in a small farming town and did not know anyone else who watched. I was enjoying the show one afternoon, wondering how The Doctor would get out of this one (Tom Baker - Logopolis), when he regenerated! I did not know regeneration was a thing much less when it would be happening, so I kinda know how you feel. This is still a strong memory for me. The station had only purchased the Tom Baker episodes and went to Robot the next day, where Jon Pertwee regenerates into Tom Baker, so I was confused for a while, lol!
The internet did exist (ARPAnet), but unless you worked at one of the DoD or University sites linked to it, you didn't know about it. ;) My local PBS station also mixed Pertwee and Baker episodes prior to the national deal with BBCWW, so I never really got into the show very seriously until Matt's tenure.
I'd always had the impression that the Vastra/Clara scene was a kind of F you to the fans that railed against casting an older actor as the new Doctor.
This was such a deeply satisfying reaction vid to watch. :) Glad you enjoyed 12's first episode. Such an emotional handing-over to Capaldi, but the chemistry between him and Clara is instant, and 11 calling from Trenzelore... it's the way that Clara puts the cell phone to her chest because she can't handle it -- that part always kills me.
My reaction to seeing this pop up in my notifications was an excited/happy squeal. I'm one of those brand new subscribers you were talking to at the beginning. I just discovered you a couple of weeks ago and have been binge-watching all your Doctor Who reactions and enjoying them immensely. I love how genuine you are and how you give your thoughts on the episode after your reactions. Anyway, great reaction as always! So sorry you had to relive the Eleven goodbye grief all over again. I knew that scene would be rough for you.
It's only been a few short days since you said goodbye to Eleven and your emotions are still raw. We had a few months before we were properly introduced to the Twelfth Doctor, but you are still nursing a broken heart. I felt Eleven's telephone call to Clara helped me to accept Peter Capaldi as the next Doctor. Eleven was Clara's Doctor because he was the first Doctor she was introduced to. She learned of all the other incarnations afterwards, but Twelve's incarnation was a new regeneration cycle and even the Doctor was having issues about the change in him. It was almost like he was losing the plot. Capaldi will grow on you, but he won't replace Smith in your heart. Now you have seen Twelve come to his senses, he will surprise you with his energy and enthusiasm. Capaldi is a long time Whovian and Hartnell was his favourite Doctor. Capaldi is one of us.
12th regenerated this Christmas... and I was f*ing sad. I legit cried. Well, time to rewatch his whole run with you! He's probably my favourite after Troughton's Doctor.
Im so excited that you’re now onto the Doctor I consider my Doctor 😁👌🏼 It’s totally understandable for you to miss 11 and you probably always will! I can’t wait for you to get properly into 12s run (s9 and s10) and I especially can’t wait for 12s Christmas specials as they’re my favourites! As always an excellent reaction!
Electroshock Therapy for the Soul I do love s8, my favourite 12 episode is in s8. But 9 and 10 are my two all time favourite series and when I feel 12 changed from his first series.
People tend to knock season 8 (not dissing anyone, just many really didn't take a shine to 12 until season 9, but I loved Capaldi from the start), but I loved it. It showed so many things about the Doctor that I loved. Some of the entire rebooted Who best episodes (in my humble opinion) that are my favorite are in season 8. While season 9 is probably my most favorite season of Doctor Who, what's not to love, I am a huge fan of the newest seasons.
Elizabeth Salvatore oh I do love series 8! I think 12s three seasons are three of the best. Was a big supporter of Capaldi becoming the doctor before his casting. Love 12, and miss him a lot😭
25:12 I love this shot because it makes you question the doctor, was he lying about not being a murderer? or was the robot lying about not self destructing? its left to us to decide.
I'm so happy you finally made it to MY Doctor! I was dreading the moment you would watch the phone call, it seems when you cry I cry all over again. Happy watching!
I think the phone call was for all the lover's of 11 Asking them to stick with him to. Also most companions even if they know he can regenerate still takes time to get use to a new doctor and a new personality. The only ones who seem to accept the change better are other timelords.
I have been dying to see your reaction to this episode :) It's one of my absolute favorites of all time and it's an amazing intro to Peter as the Doctor. I think you will really enjoy this season!
When 11 calls Clara, I think it's almost like him re-assuring the audience too. He's reminding us that he IS the Doctor and that it's okay to not quite know him yet, but you will get to know him. I always love it when writer's consider the audience when writing their scripts and write them in a way that we feel incorporated in the show as if we're also companions along for the ride. Similarly, companions aren't ever portrayed as perfect which allows the audience to connect with them better. It always takes the Doctor to show them their strengths and makes them realise how spectacular they really are which makes the audience feel special and that they could also be companions of the Doctor.
Yay, it's here! First thing I saw was the thumbnail, then the scene came up, and I was like, "Oh, crap, here we go." *Hugs* Your reactions are beautiful, and this was well worth the wait. Sorry for the stress you had to go through for this episode, but your fans understand and love it as always. Hope you are doing well. :) 11:08 You got some moves there. :D
I will always remember when ..... this episode aired. The production team and writers did a great job of setting the episode to appeal to existing as well as new viewers of the show. 11 showing up is still a gut punch. You have an interesting season ahead of you. Can't wait to see those reactions!!
If you look carefully in that scene, you can see me, raising my eyebrow in a questioning manner at the Doctor right behind Clara. Every time. Like, yeah, mhm, sure.
This episode takes the cake for me in terms of a post-regeneration for your same reasons - it did a great job of focusing on change. Clara here almost felt like a stand-in for the fans, because we were sharing her struggle. And Eleven's phone call really cemented that message :) Peter's Doctor is still going to be a hard shift (as you'll find out), and I doubt he'll replace Matt in your heart, but nonetheless good luck with him.
Ugh, I ♥️ Twelve so much. So excited for you to see all that Peter Capaldi has to offer! I love how the episodes brings back the robots from Girl in the Fireplace(Steven Moffat's first episode).
One solid month of doctor who reactions, then cold turkey for 2 weeks! You more than deserve the break for all the effort you put into December. But if there was anything to confirm my addiction......Yeah, I,m hooked.
14:09 Nice callback to Eleven's first outing as the Doctor when he said that same line, "I saw something, what did I see? I saw something..." when he first discovers Rory outside not looking at the sky like everyone else was at the time. Also, I love that the entire theme of the episode is a parallel to Who fans, basically displaying the idea of fans not fully accepting a new Doctor because he isn't what they're used to or expect.
Capaldi was always destined to be the Doctor. Unlike us, he's seen every episode since the begining and understands the Doctor on a level you and I never will.
One of the reason I love your Doctor who reactions coz 11 is my doctor too.. And I remember when i was watching the episode and when 11 called clara from tardis, my best friend told me.."See, that was for you!!" I also had a very hard time with the transition from 11 to 12 so I can totally relate to Clara and You!! :)
Capaldi just becomes the Doctor, His face literally sticks to the character from now. Absolutely incredible actor playing the BEST doctor- By a long way.
I loved every Doctor from the 1st to the 12th and i am very excited to see how it continues from there! They all in their own way played the Doctor perfectly!
Amazing reaction ... i was the same seeing 11 at the end totally broke me 💔 I watched this for first time on a preview screening at cinema and had to go straight to work after ... I turned up to work with eyeliner all over my face still sniffling 🙈😂😂 11 will always be my doctor ❤️🙌🏻❤️
Glad to hear someone else appreciate the confrontatipn between the Doctor and half-faced man. It reflected the parallels between the two very well and that conclusion to their struggle was beautiful. The Doctor prefers not to kill hut the was a situation where there was no other way. No other episode of the modern show had really highlighted that before. It's my personal favourite Doctor debut story of new Who.
I really appreciate how this episode eases us into a new regeneration, it's certainly a pleasant change from the 'OH, everyone feel so horribly sad that 10 is leaving, it's so tragic, so horrible, you should feel terrible that 10 is going' that we got prior to 11's first episode. I'm not suggesting he was, but it was almost written like RTD was being spiteful and wanted to sandbag the 11th Doctor by making the 10th's sendoff so overblown (personal opinion of course)
MyAbridged Well, they honestly didn't know if the show was getting renewed that year thanks to shaky ratings, reviews, and being that RTD brought Dr.Who back so the send off was enormous following a handful of build up episodes and specials.
SiouxTube what are you even talking about? Series 4 had rather consistent ratings and by the Time RTD wrote Ten's regeneration Moffat had already long agreed to take over
SiouxTube - They knew. Ratings were at their strongest during Tennant's era. They didn't just get a new series commissioned shortly before The End Of Time, they knew WELL in advance.
A cool fact about this episode is the actor who played the Hobo (the one who the 12th doctor takes the coat from) He is the widower of the actress who played Sarah Jane Smith
People gotta be careful! SPOILERS IN THE COMMENTS from quotes 🙄 and future episode titles etc. Gotta be a bit more respectful to Jess. Not having a go at anyone just saying. We try to keep it spoiler free here.
Will be interesting to see your reactions to this season. It wasn't one of my favorites, although there's a lot of highlights. Interesting Easter Egg, the scene where 12 questions about his face, that guy's Elisabeth Sladen's husband
Season 8 has quality fluctuations that we haven't really seen since season 4, it somehow has possibly my two favourite episodes of New Who one after the other, while the episodes before and after them are possibly my two least favourites
Are you saying Series 6 and 7 were of a consistent quality? Because they weren't. There was some utter trash in those series, and there was some gold in them too.
'MyAbridged' Indeed there are two "notorious" episodes to this season but lets not give our reactions to them before Jess has a chance to see them like we did.
I remember watching your "Doctor who December" when it first came out. I have to say it was a stroke of genius! In 2025, it still does not lose its charm! You should be proud of your accomplishment as no other reactor or even the BBC came close! 💟
Capaldi was the best actor ever cast for the role and I will die on this hill ......

It was the show literally screaming at us "He's still the same guy, just give him a chance!"
Considering what a great actor Capaldi is, it's sad that they had to go to such lengths.

When Capaldi goes "Hello hello rubbish robots from the dawn of time", the music that plays is Capaldi's theme. It's called "A Good Man?"
Paul Wagner although that actual track that plays in that part is called “hello, hello”
It's actually my favourite Doctor music motiff so far...kind of reminds me of Hans Zimmer, really stirring and dramatic

Are you trying to destroy her further?!
:p
It was from the Flesh episode
The symbolism of that is great, even if it's unintended
Joseph Simpson: Similar imagery to how Eleven walked through the holographic image of Ten during the Atraxi's Doctor montage.
"Fun fact"?!
I’d so forgotten about the scene with Strax throwing the newspaper, that was funny as fuck.
I don't see how he looks at the universe in wonder. matt smith's doctor said the universe is like a back yard he knows everything about everything.
Does that make 9 a toddler? Lol
Matt Smith came off like an old Professor in a young body. Peter Capaldi came off like a snotty punk rocker in an old man's body.
Don't you mean hearts? I'm just playing had to do it.
What about Tennant?
@@yasin6118, Tennant is my favourite. Still pretty fresh in my mind. Didn't need to go back and watch him to remember the basic story.

Yes. Expected & warranted. I miss 11 too.

What a great scene
Its completely warranted. I went through a mourning phase for Eleven. He's My Doctor. But I loved Twelve anyway. I mean how can you not love Capaldi right? He's absolutely brilliant in everything.
tylerx2f01 boy have I got news for you
I like that she looks him in the eyes. When she was talking to the War Doctor she mentioned that all the Doctors had the same eyes (in the spiritual sense), so when she takes the time to look 12 in the eyes, she sees he’s still the same person.

On Capaldi’s first day, Jenna went to his dressing room and brought him down to the set. She knew what it was like to be new to this world.
One of the best relationships on the show ever...
This reminded me of my favourite capaldi story. He wondered off set and he some how ended up in a shower by accident and showed back on set soaked
This episode: "Five-foot-one and crying, you never stood a chance."
Never a truer word spoken.
YESS! We are now into my favourite era of the show. It’s going to be one hell of a ride!!
You must love 6 too
Borgin & Burkes Antiques Shop 6 is amazing
6 is great, it's just a shame that he got such bad writing and direction in his television stuff
But that doesn't work with every regeneration, now does it?
Mythril it still works if you change each regenerations to some regenerations.
MyAbridged i actually have a head canon that Twelve is scottish bcs of Amy
jurassicFan1 that’s an interesting idea
Another thing to add to this theory that i heard about was that 10 was a reaction to jack, 9 saw that rose was being swooned by his space boyfriend rockstar personality and so thats what 10 became
13:11 The homeless guy talking with the doctor is the husband of sarah jane smith ( in real life ) :D
11 was right, 12 is a whopper.
He wasn’t that good
So good
Can't wait for you to see the rest of the Capaldi Era. Twelve is my favorite Doctor and I hope you love him.
I honestly prefer series 8 12th doctor, guess it's just me.
I somehow completely forgot about Missy at the end there. I got so hyped all over again seeing her, she's the best!
MyAbridged she isnt named yet til end of series
did you even watch it? the first words she says are "Hello I'm Missy"
MyAbridged I never liked Missy
Spoilers spoilers spoilers
I thought her reveal was far too obvious, series 8 had my least favourite arc, though in general I preferred the Davies method of subtly hinting at the arc until it’s all revealed at the end. Moffat’s arcs have been lacking in subtlety in my opinion.
My bad. I miss read thought you said about her. Never fear have a chill
Steve Redfield how often do you watch doctor who? She said hello I'm missy lol
That's a long time to try to hang on to an already skeptical audience.
dajtoad1 this is why I hope 13 has a really great first series, cause if it's as middlingly as Capaldis first...
It’s because they randomly picked a head mold for the mask and it turned out it was Matts
Appearently they had a different mask but it broke and they didht have time to remake it. So with a Matt Smith mask hanging around they just used that one. They had used Matt Smith masks for something I remember seeing them use it on one of those Doctor Who Confidential or something similar to that.
You're going to love Missy.

I'm sure by what she has seen that Missy is very crazy.

Best reaction line ever!!! 29:22 "Why am I doing this again?!?" HAHAHAHA
The trend is always this
"I love the nth Doctor! He can't leave!!!!"
"I Don't LIKE THE NEW GUY! HE is not my Doctor!"
"eh, He's ok....."
"Noooooo!!!!!!!!! I Love the N+1th Doctor! He can't leave!"
I think that the comparison is that 10 is the dashing hero in a sci-fi opera, 11 is whimsy sci/fantasy, 12 functioned best in that kinda sci-fi horror way.
*A LOT
ALOT ISN'T A WORD
I only realised recently the monsters in this were meant to be like a new version of the clockwork robots I think from Girl in the Fireplace.
Welcome to the Capaldi era! I know you were deeply stressed but I'm glad you got the video edited! :D
Smith and Capaldi were amazing as the Doctor. Top three on my list.
I'm still a McCoy fanboy, though. I like the 'just as planned' Doctors.
McCoy as 7 is Ace
(Pun very much intended)
Thank you so much for doing more reactions! It's such a wonderful gift to see you welcomed to the 12th Doctor!
You remember the face from fire of Pompeii, you are good
I'd always had the impression that the Vastra/Clara scene was a kind of F you to the fans that railed against casting an older actor as the new Doctor.
Good. Do they not know that the First Doctor was only one year younger than 2014 Peter Capaldi?
@KVAcedo27 just looked it up, you're right
This was such a deeply satisfying reaction vid to watch.
28:38 "Is that the Doctor?"
That line kills me.
You will LOVE Peter.. I miss him dearly though.
Doctor Who killing off dinosaurs since Adric died.
They will never know it wasn't right.
Oh, to watch all of Doctor Who with fresh eyes again. I'm envious.
I really do like 12 but man, I LOVE Missy. Loooooove Missy.
Tap tap tap tap
Or better yet, don't hint that she is anyone we know.
12th regenerated this Christmas... and I was f*ing sad. I legit cried.
Well, time to rewatch his whole run with you! He's probably my favourite after Troughton's Doctor.
Always have someone to hug when you watch doctor who.
"(s8, s9, and s10)"
Fixed that for ya!
Well, its just that season 8 has "that" episode in it which people nickname using a rhyme of its title. That's all I'm saying.
25:12 I love this shot because it makes you question the doctor, was he lying about not being a murderer? or was the robot lying about not self destructing? its left to us to decide.
Thank you so much for doing this reaction series, I'm having a blast sharing this with you :)
Don’t be sorry! We all felt the same way! Such a beautiful moment. Surreal❤️
Everyone in London at the start of the episode: *completely shocked and terrified*
Sesska: “It’s a dinosaur! Hewwo!” Loved that 😂
Yay, it's here! :)
11:08 You got some moves there. :D
I will always remember when ..... this episode aired. The production team and writers did a great job of setting the episode to appeal to existing as well as new viewers of the show. 11 showing up is still a gut punch. You have an interesting season ahead of you. Can't wait to see those reactions!!
“Clara I’m not your boyfriend.”
Suuuuuuuuure
Welllll, the last episode DID start off with a phone call from Clara telling the Doctor that he was her boyfriend.
Torchwood Boy I always called that scene The CLARAfication.
If you look carefully in that scene, you can see me, raising my eyebrow in a questioning manner at the Doctor right behind Clara. Every time. Like, yeah, mhm, sure.
I think it was more 12 saying that he was no longer the 'boyfriend' Doctor anymore but it was a mistake in using his young face to his advantage.
You ship them so bad :'D
"Why am I still doing this again?!"
If it makes you feel any better, I still do it every single time too
This episode takes the cake for me in terms of a post-regeneration for your same reasons - it did a great job of focusing on change.
Chloe Riley It wasn’t his first episode writing for Doctor Who. His first one was the Two Parter ‘The Empty Child’ and ‘The Doctor Dances’
When Strax threw that friggin newspaper, that was the moment I knew I'd love series 8.
Also, I love that the entire theme of the episode is a parallel to Who fans, basically displaying the idea of fans not fully accepting a new Doctor because he isn't what they're used to or expect.
when it showed us the link this episode had with “The Girl in the Fireplace” i almost screamed. that is one of my favorite episodes along with Tenth.
Capaldi just becomes the Doctor,
His face literally sticks to the character from now.
I turned up to work with eyeliner all over my face still sniffling 🙈😂😂
11 will always be my doctor ❤️🙌🏻❤️
MyAbridged Completely agree. Tens regen would be perfect for me if his last line was more upbeat with a teary smile.
I´ve seen this in the theater! In GERMANY!!
Can´t wait another 3 weeks, though...
They should be deleted now - reply to this with usernames of any more you may see :) Thanks
Mark McKeown Borgin and Bukes antique shop. That thread has some spoilers in terms of episode titles
Thanks Jack, should be gone now.
Snape kills Dumbledore.
Anybody else: “AHHH A FUCKIN DINOSAUR IS GONNA KILL US!!!”
Sesska: “awwww hey sweetie!”
I feel comforting know that I am not the only one who has those kind of emotion watching doctor who.
Wow, I never knew that. Nice little link to the past.
