Back to Basics! How to Wire a 2 Way Light Switch.

- Most homes have at least one 2-way light switch. Here's how we wire prepare a twin and earth cable and connect up an MK Base 2-way light switch. Don't forget the sleeving.
The light switch in this video is from the MK base range, which we reviewed here.

It’s like watching The Flintstones. 😂
I never turn off the main, because I just let sparks fly, it helps determine what breakers are what haha
That may not be the best idea
🤦🤦🤦
Nice touch with the screw alignment, even though they are covered 👍
Yes me too. Always angle at that position incase I come back and they are moved and then I know someone else has been in there. I even tell the client if they are looking so as much I warn them. Best regards, Scott. ✌️🙏✌️
@@scottl7644 doesn't that just signal to the client to remember the screw alignment?
And what if they did? My mum always loosened light switches to wallpaper, the decorator always cut in - 10 years later it's obvious which is which. My mum knows nothing about electricity but she didn't take any unreasonable risks.
OCD? 😂
It's the editing.. relaxing and informative... love it
I love watching old installations. They make me very comfortable that I'm living in a safe future cuz we do it right now days
You do it differently, not right.
I'm pretty sure that we do it the right way. 😂
@@Telvii pretty sure that the other 200 countries on this planet say the same thing.
What exactly is a new way?
@@VanyaYani Neutral on any switch for automation/smart switchs.
It’s very satisfying when the wiring is easy.
Just make sure you got your neutral in the junction box, and you’ll be fine for the future. In our country we use EIB/KNX for smart homes, no electric power needed. The layout of the wiring is totally different also. You need 1 bus cable from device to device, and the power is coming from the central supply.
A 2 way switch just carried the lives not the neutrals they’re irrelevant
@@uplightuk8924 you need the neutral for smart switches like shelly and others. Yes, you can get a version that doesn't need the neutral but the you have a high minimum load and in some cases you have to wire a load resistor even above the min load.
@@Baerschi100 or you can use the shelly neutral bypass, but I agree with you.
Same in US nowdays.
A neutral is required inside any lightswitch enclosure.
@@Baerschi100 We wire neutrals to the switch in the UK. But back in the day, the old school way was just to wire the neutrals to the lights.
Either way is fine but yes taking neutrals to the switch is future proofing it however that used to be frowned upon
I always used brown for the common.
I do as well
It's Euro wiring
Use any colour you like, but brown us most common for common, as long as it's same at both ends. I think the on site guide shows the black as common
Black as common for 2 way!
Something to do with black is the middle conductor in a 3c+e
You have to do that twice before it works 😂
I wish we had fittings like this across the pond
If only it was that smooth in real life 😂😂😂
Haupa Pounch , Had some Green Haupa Insulated screwdrivers when I first started , they were really good. Never seen there stuff around anymore.
The MK sticker in the back box 🤣🤣🤣 forgot to mention the #ad
25mm back box ,you should use min.35mm back box, for future.
Customer might want to install dimmers in the nearest future 🤔
Modern 1 gang dimmer switches fit in 25mm boxes actually 👍🏻
@@brianwalker2201 Ok, good luck especially when you wire a 3 plate standard install.
@@martoniozsa but this is a 1 gang switch, which is ample room for a dimmer. How do you know he didn’t install 35mm boxes in the other more congested switch points?
I install 25mm unless I actually need a 35mm for dimmers etc.... I ask first and would rather do less damage to the building. You should install 35mm at a minimum... Behave.
Is it just me but I always thought 25mm boxes being installed, being in use looked stingy and potentially troublesome.
Nicely done 👍
В общем, похоже у всех электриков пальцы разодраны, а я думал только у меня такие😄
Лично у меня целые, разодраные и изрезаные первые 5 лет были))))
@@иванг-ш9ыПотом адаптация появляется.
Nice job 🎉🎉🎉🎉thanks
Now thats some kind of '70 stuff
Appropriate torque is important while tightening the screw terminals.
Lovely!
Some electricians use brown for the common ,including myself
Red was common therefore brown is now common
@@TheYohtube Like in several other countries like Germany- France and The Netherlands!!
Why does my switch only have three wires, live, neutral and earth? I live in the UK. I also have a pull cord switch on the same circuit which also only has the three wires. Is this right?
Also good practice to flatten the top and bottom lugs as they snag on cables and cause chaffing..
Solid core wire, earth wire without cover, metal box... I had to check if we were back in the 19th century.
In the US everything inside the walls is solid core, ground is always bare (and kept bare on purpose). Metal boxes seem to be standard for commercial buildings, but fairly uncommon in newer residential (although still seen a lot in older homes)
@@tankerkiller125 good thing here in inland Europe evolved from that. Stranded wire is much easier to work with.
Sorry, how high is your horse exactly?
Nothing wrong with solid wire for fixed installations, and the earth wire is sleeved. It serves no purpose to have it insulated within the outer. Running singles is different, but those aren't singles.
I want to install this switch in the US just for fun
海外だとここまで手間がかかるんですね
日本だと被覆を剥いて銅線を差し込むだけですからね、違いにびっくりです。
I don't uderstand why they use metal boxes in America. Just use plastic ones, that's one ground connection less. And in europe the ground wire is already insulated in the cable. So much less hassle
This is in the UK my friend. Best regards, Scott. ✌️🙏✌️
@@scottl7644 Yes as in the US it would be called a three way witch. How confusing. In Finland it is logically called a 6-switch.
British and Americans love metal in the electric components. In Europe grounding was not commonly used on dry rooms until the 90s so one could not ground anything.
@Okaro
Tell me you don't know anything about American electricity without telling me you don't know anything about American electricity.
All electrical boxes for the past few decades or more have been plastic! Unless someone purposely chooses to use an aluminum outdoor box or is using EMT surface mount metallic conduit in a commercial application. And while I'm being fully transparent in commercial applications as well they will use a metallic box if they're using MC cable for Extra Protection.
Y use 3 wires in a single switch? Am an electrician in Kenya Africa
How much of the service loop was consumed? It looked like you pulled out another foot of cable on every cut
Service loops arnt a thing in the UK, at least I never have, and was never taught to do so
I'm confused, how many light switches can you connect with 2 way switches? He did like 10 or so
Infinite amount as long as wires are infinitely short.
Напомнило советский выключатель
And this folding of wires.. Is it really speced by the manufacturer?
You wanna make sure the bottom lug at least is bent down flat to avoid many a fault especially with multiple switch wires in the box
Solid wire wrapped around a terminal screw... Np
Me I’d use brown as common 😅
Black
in UK 220 volt systems they can use one or two wire sizes smaller for lighting cause of the higher voltage.
compared to code requirement in US/Canada.
UK doesn't use 220 V. It's 230.
Thank you, for the spec.
This is so asmr😂
👍🏻
С установкой подрозетника надо заморачиваться , в плане уровня, чтобы потом фурнитура встала четко
It looks very easy when a professional doing it. Thats why you should leave it to the professionals. My heart can not take anymore do it your self electricity to save money.
Be careful cutting across all terminations on a split board!
On a switch wire ?
Nah fuck em RCBO everyday just try and get 9mA per RCD on a split load nowadays with all these digital devices plugged in.
Good
Where can i get one of those sick MK branded backboxes. They're dead subtle.
I pull a feed to the first switch my sw to the next and just have a set of strappers and a neutral between
Зачем такое сечение провода к выключатель? Он, что 5 киловатт будет отключать или включать?
Всего лиш 1.5мм.кв. Какие 5кв? Там потолок 2.2кв по английским нормам(10А)
I feel like you should be leaving the ground conductor longer so it is guaranteed to get pulled out last in case things start coming loose.
Why would they come loose?
These are accessories fitted into the wall.
Take it the back box isn’t MK
1.5 mm?
Bring back the good old days when colours were easy to spot in dark cupboards and made sense.these new colours are stupid
Yes
Get yourself a pair of small cable shears, and wire benders
Front of steel box should be set flush with wall's surface. That's why boxes are available in 16,20,25,35 and 46mm depths as well as to accommodate deep backed accessories. Better time spent at 1st fix setting and levelling boxes makes for neater and tidier job.
Yes this really annoys me and is why you keep having to buy longer screws to replace the supplied ones on the switch.
@@planespeaking Whole point of the box is to provide an enclosure between the accessory and the surrounding material. I always took my time at 1st fix and had boxes set dead set flush with wall face. For walls that were to be tiled I'd even set the box about 7mm proud of the plastered wall so the front of the box is near flush with the tiles' surface. Plasterers hated me because it really made their work difficult. Long screws shouldn't even be an option. proper thing is to use extension/skeleton boxes.
after watching so many #Electroboom Videos, I expected some shortages, sparks flying and breakers popping! 🤣
Modern UK... Look at this switch, we've had designs like this in 1970s 🤣🤣🤣
I still find European switches better looking..Just a spring in it and it holds together.
France, 1970....
Thanks:), how to work with your company sir?
MK is the only wall switch brand that we use it in iraq till( 2003 )
If you can’t wire a 2 way switch as a sparks 😄god help ya
Wenn jeder Handwerker mit seinem Material so verschwenderisch umgehen würde, dann hätten wir bald keine Rohstoffe mehr. Da werden die Kabel zig mal abgezwickt als ob dieses keinen Wert hätte.

Does where your from run lower amps than US? Seems like our residential wiring is alot thicker
Yeah
230v in the UK
The UK and Europe both run 1.5 mm² wires for circuits protected by 10 amp breakers, while we use 2.5 mm² wires for 16 amp circuits. At 230V, that's 2300 and 3680W.
Grey as the common, nooooooooo 😢😂
1.5 мм2?
Is there a tool to remove those plugs easily?

Been in the game since 98 and unfortunately because no one would give me a chance the majority of my knowledge is self taught. Still to this day cannot do lighting circuits (especially when strappers are involved) on site, it still doesn't make sense in my head.
Draw it out on paper, photo it and keep on your phone for reference . Nobody wins a prize for memory, only safe, quality workmanship.
@@MS-Patriot2 have tried this, unfortunately because I didn't learn it properly I still have the original method I used stuck in my head which is wrong. All good though, I get the improver to do them

No Neutral?
The switch is put between two live wires. Double pole switches are only in the meter box.
The neutral is wired from the circuit breaker to the light fitting or the junction box.

Why do they make switches for 2 gang boxes??? I'm so lost. What's the purpose? Single gang box with a single gang switch?? And why are there three wires into the switch?? Never seen this in my life. What the hell is the third wire?? If this is a simple two way switch then there should only be a ground switch leg and constant hot. If this is a three way switch then the other two wires in the switch are traveler's to the next switch. But the description says two way switch which is 1 switch and a light. So why the extra wire?
That is a single gang box. It’s a 2 way switch, so there’s a phase, neutral, and a common, and the extra wire for the earth
hahahaha
