If you listen really closely as Amy jumps over the table you can hear Rory say to Amy's mum "I was plastic! He was the stripper at my stag do". Cracks me up every time.
Including granddaughter Susan. To be consistent, Doctor Eleven should say "With Rory you can live normally as any woman should do (sic)... Your place is with Rory and not with a silly old buffer like me... Goodbye, my dear."
Aw man, Jo Grant. She's one of my favourite companions, naive and sometimes pretty clueless but she always tried to learn and was fearless when needed. I love that she got to meet the Doctor again (in his Matt Smith form) and that we got to see how her life turned out. And that her grandson became Iron Fist.
There was a time when The Doctor sincerely thought the ideal life for a woman was to be married in 20th century (give or take two hundred years) England, and no longer have male friends or go or do anything else. That was a philosophy he really believed in and lived by. Then he experienced the 21st century, not for the first time but a version of it that wasn't shit, and changed. Only took him a thousand years.
Often skipped over is just how clever the "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" line is. The TARDIS is totally all of those things as well as that being a traditional wedding theme, and Amy and Rory's wedding was the perfect anchor for the Doctor to remain in the rebooted universe.
I remember at the time on the original airing of Flesh and Stone, people caught the "continuity error" of Eleven having his jacket on during that moment when he went back. Moffat played us for fools. Gotta keep a sharp eye and ear out with him in charge...!
I remember this as well! Folks on the boards were complaining about this continuity error. 😄. But it was not an error. And Moffat, having at one time posted on The Who boards before he was show runner, had to know the boards would blow up over this. The sly dog.
"Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue". I love that bit. Also, the whole her parents being missing bit. I can't remember if it were you guys, but remember a reaction were someone said "why are these kids always left alone" or something like that. And I like how in this one its explained and in a why that ties to the whole plot. Definitely my favourite season this one
Some people complain about Moffat's push towards the dramatic and it indeed does often seem like his plots are all about building to big dramatic moments. He may even skip steps in order to get to them. I still insist though to any critics that there is a reason why Karen Gillian has become one of the biggest stars on the planet. There is a reason why Arthur Darvil isn't just limited to roles in U.K. soap operas. Doctor Who companions haven't normally translated to non-British or big-screen roles even when they were talented actors. Stephen Moffat let these kids shine and if you were to find yourself as a companion on this show Moffat should be your man. By the way, there is an earlier episode where River Song says to the Doctor, "Have you done the Pandorica yet?" so it was pretty clear that at a minimum she would survive.
It's not like previous or current Doctor Who companions are bad actors. You dont ever see any of them in Hollywood blockbusters, unless it's Freeman Ageema getting blown up after being on screen for 7 seconds.
I love the different dynamics between the Doctor and Amy compared to the Doctor and Rory. Amy's the one who trusts and idolises the Doctor and Rory's the sceptic who challenges him. It would have been dull if they were both "groupies," for the Doctor. It also makes sense. For Amy its obvious that she grew up with this fantasy image of this hero she met once as a child. But for Rory that "fantasy Doctor" would have been a rival for Amy's affections and one he would struggle to live up to. So it makes sense that he'd challenge the real Doctor in a way that would prove he is not the perfect man from Amy's fantasy. I also think it says something that Rory is a nurse who spent his days being bossed around by doctors. In his dream in "Amy's Choice," he is now a doctor. All part of his insecurity and desire to live up to Amy's fantasy man. There's some nice subtext in their character arcs and sometimes I feel it gets overlooked next to Moffat's timey-wimey shenanigans when people discuss his writing.
This was one of my absolute favorite finales. It had a bit of everything. And Matt Smith is easily my favorite Doctor. I haven't had a problem with any, but I just feel his Doctor shows the most growth out of any. At this point he's the 'oldest' version of the Doctor and also played by the youngest actor. The Doctor still shows his youthful boyish side with the dancing and goofiness, but then he can get serious like with his monologue. I can't wait for the next season. It's one of my favorites and has some terrific episodes. Ohhhh I'm excited.
And now ‘The Drunken Giraffe’ dance is canon! Don’t miss the Christmas Special before Series 6, it’s one of the best imho. And the next few episodes are really, really good! If I recall correctly Stephen Moffat, when he became show runner went through River’s whole timeline with Alex Kingston before they started filming, so she knew exactly where River’s timeline went, starting with her dying in the library. Nobody else had a clue. And despite being asked she never told any of the cast even though they pressed her on it. Spoilers!
Mostly. There was one aspect of River's story that they hadn't decided yet (or even thought of, maybe), but unfortunately we can't discuss it until the end of next season.
I actually just posted that the next Christmas episode is possibly a good one to skip for now and watch at Christmas. It doesn’t actually advance the storyline, but it’s so beautiful that it’s worth viewing at the right time of year.
My fave Who finale! I love it so much. The mixture of time-traveling and the fairy-tale feel. And so many quotable lines too. My faves being "Hello everyone, I'm Amy's imaginary friend...but I came anyway" and "we're all just stories in the end..." And that clever bit with the present Doctor going back to the Angels episode to talk to Amy that explains why he had his jacket in that scene when in that episode (when the angels episode was first broadcast here in the UK a decade ago, many pondered it a continuity issue/mistake til this one explained it). I love it. :)
I think Paula has Steven Moffat just right. The extravagant, emotional rollercoaster, combined with twisty convolutions of plot are what he's all about. You may or may not find that all a bit wearing after a while. But some amazing things will keep on happening throughout his run.
I watched it 10 years ago when it first ran and now and I still get teary at the Doctor's speech over sleeping Amy and when she remembers him at the wedding. Damn you, Moffat.
This is the episode where Matt Smith became the Doctor for me. Also glad that Rory is back. I remember watching the Angel episode and I noticed that scene where the Doctor was talking to Amy and I knew something was off. Love that it tied into this episode.
"We're all stories in the end. Just make it a good way eh? Because it was you know. It was the best." Ah, The Big Bang. Much like the previous episode this finale is a wonderful emotional rollercoaster, going from wacky hijinks to intense action to heartbreaking tragedy to the most exhilarating punch-the-air ending to any series thus far. It's definitely peak Moffat writing, with the timey wimey twists and turns coming thick and fast, fitting perfectly into the story without overcomplicating the narrative and risking losing the audience. The jokes are immensely funny, and the various action setpieces are loads of fun; the scene in which River threatens the Dalek is spine-tingling, and praise has to be given to Alex Kingston for managing to make her feel genuinely dangerous. Meanwhile, the way the cracks in time story arc is resolved in this episode is brilliant. I love the way the story tied together the various plot threads (the cracks, the Pandorica, the exploding TARDIS, that one scene from Flesh and Stone where the Doctor inexplicably gets his jacket back) and uses them to create a perfect satisfying conclusion to the series. Ultimately, the emotional moments between our now three main characters is what makes this episode so great. The scene where Rory pledges to look after Amy in the Pandorica is a very touching moment, and seeing his absolute devotion and loyalty to a woman who, let's be honest, hadn't always treated him that well was so sweet. The "final goodbye" between Amy and the Doctor was so heartbreakingly sad, and played very well by Karen Gillan and Matt Smith, who also gives a fantastic performance in the scene where he speaks to the young Amelia before being erased from time. You genuinely feel like the Doctor is a tired and ancient alien wearing the face of a young man, and it's beautiful. And then the wedding; I don't think I've ever watched the scene where Amy uses the old wedding phrase to bring the Doctor back into existence without getting this big stupid grin on my face. After four series ending with a massive downer, whether it be due to a regeneration, a companion leaving, a massive body count or some combination of the three, it's wonderful to see a series end on a happy note. The companions are married, the universe is saved, everyone who was erased from existence is restored, and the TARDIS trio are free to set off on brand new adventure. The perfect fairytale ending to this perfect fairytale series
I really enjoyed this reaction. But you edited out my two favorite scenes 1 Where Rory gives the speech about guarding Amy. And 2 Where Amy watches the video about the lone Centurion protecting the pandorica.
Fun fact that I've posted before is that when little Amelia first looks that the Pandorica in the museum, if you pause it at the right moment you can see the Doctor along the back wall behind her. You cant see it in this upload so you'd have to pause your stream or DVD to see it.
Interesting fact, moffat planned what series 5 wud be like if it was david tennant’s last series. In the first episode when the doctor meets young amy, he would hav been injured and close to regenerating, this would hav been the doctor from the series finale and it would eventually lead to that beginning scene...if u get what i mean? Lol
Good guesswork there Paula! I also love the Wedding / Tardis link they put in there: Something Old, Something New, Something "Borrowed", Something BLUE.
fun fact, people were convinced during "Flesh and Stone" (the angel episode where the doctor goes back to) that they had caught an editing error. Because, the doctor had lost his blazer earlier in that episode, but when he gave the speech about "You have to remember", he was wearing his blazer again. It's funny that people were convinced they'd found a mistake, only for moffat to come in and show that it had been intentional all along
HUZZAH! Hell yes, you Gallifrey gals! Awe, I'm so appreciate of people like you two; you have kindred spirits amazing souls, incredible humor, wonderful love of amazing shows, and are genuinely awesome. Especially during this wibbly-wobbly, timey, wimey stuff (quarantine), you're a breath of fresh air. Thanks, girls!💜💙 Katrina, I'm right there with you will all of your expressions, and Paula (3:24), hahaha I see where you're coming from, but hang in there.
Did anyone below talk about how this would have played out had Moff talked David Tennant into doing one more year? That was the original plan, to have Tennant's last year be Moff's first so that EVERYTHING didn't change between seasons four and five, but Tennant got an offer he couldn't refuse so enter Matt Smith. Anyway, the original plan that Moff pitched to Tennant was that the very first scenes with young Amelia would have been with Tennant in a raggedy, messed up costume that would never be explained until the end of the season when due to *plot stuff that Moff hadn't worked out yet* the bits with young Amelia would be revealed to have been the Tenth Doctor's final moments. Everything went in another direction when a new Doctor happened though, and the idea of a later Doctor preceding his earlier self in the story would happen... well, you'll see soon enough.
This is one of my favorite episodes. So good. And, I always thought the quote "Live Well, Love Rory" would make a great t-shirt. Perhaps an addition for another Gallifrey Gals merch?
such a great finale. fun, emotional, clever. brilliantly combines intimate character focus with good story. 10/10. brings it back to the start and middle. the best finale till the capaldi era.
Great reaction! I agree 100% about Rory, he's one of my all time favorite companions. Lots of great moments in this, I'm so pleased to see you both enjoying it so much.
Rory remembers being plastic! So it was all there for him and her. The episode Amy’s choice foretold all of this. In fact, there were two different timelines Amy and Rory were living in “Amy’s choice”. But now they do have memory from two different timelines. The one with the crack and the one without it. Moffat coined the phrase “timey wimey “ when he wrote “blink” and that is how he writes. P.S. Rory is awesomeness!
paula, been watching from the start. just love how smart you are and empathic, and "just because you're married , doesn't mean the adventures over" really touched me. guess i better subscribe!
It's funny, the way Paula feels about Moffatt is the same way I feel about RTD (substituting "technobabble and contrived happenstance" for "convoluted plots").
I know i've posted this the last few videos, but please watch the mini episodes "TIme and Space" before season 6. They are entirely set on the TARDIS, but they are a lot of fun. Do watch "A Christmas Carol" first though. Its also worth watching the Sarah Jane Adventures "Death of the Doctor" before series 6. It's the last real episode/episodes written by Russell T Davies.
I know Paula mentioned in her Twitch stream recently that it might be awhile before y'all start Season 6. Here's to hoping y'alll get to it soon! "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue"
I love how Rory's introduced as a bit of a bumbler, but by the end of the season he's a total badass. I've been watching Classic Who and it's amazing that you can tell it's still the Doctor, every regeneration.
Well done gals, surviving Quarantine and the series - hopefully great writing and great tv is helping so many through lockdown, crying laughing sharing keeps you sane! Stay Safe!
I just realised, I’m sure it’s too late, but I usually recommend putting this next Christmas special off to the side to watch at Christmas. It doesn’t really advance the storyline at all, and is a great Christmas viewing experience in it’s own rights.
Rory-dead from a previous episode. Amy - killed by Rory the Nestene duplicate TARDIS-explodes Universe-death by exploding TARDIS River - dies in exploding TARDIS time loop Amelia-wiped from existence The Doctor-[near] death by Dalek Dalek-death b River The Doctor-death by Big Bang 2 Just this once EVERYBODY DIES!!!
Ok, so here's my theory on Rory, as nobody in real life is that perfect: At first Amy loved him, but not entirely and she was having cold feet before the wedding, so she runs away with the Doctor. Then Rory dies and Amy realises how much he means to her just as he's wiped from existence. Then he gets recreated solely from Amy's memories, albeit as an Auton, who can see no bad in him whatsoever. Then he's turned back into a human during the 2nd big bang, and hey presto, you've now got the perfect boyfriend.
great episode, emotions all over the place. Let the adventure go on. Great to see you working around the blocks. We're all here with you for this. Soooo want to say more, but to quote River, "spoilers".
I rewatched from 9th on starting back in October (had to take a break Jan-May due to it leaving Amazon and not coming onto HBO Max until late May) but it has been a real treat revisiting this series. I even got into Clara and Capaldi much more being able to watch them quicker, rather than waiting a week between episodes and a year between seasons.
All these years later; not just from when I first saw this episode, but from way back when I watched Planet of the Spiders, that moment when Plastic!Rory hunkers down to guard the Pandorica is the single most beautiful moment of Doctor Who for me, kerk
Paula: I FIGURED this show out Whovians watching you: People usually need a flow chart. Btw how freaking menacing must you be for the Daleks, the freaking Daleks crap themselves
The scene in the forest,...it was a big discussion point amongst us fans at the time when it was spotted that he was wearing a different coat and had a vortex manipulator. If you go back to the very first episode you see little handmade toys of The Doctor and their adventures in Amy's room. Fans, at the time, wondered/theorized how such could be possible. 🙂
Love the facial expressions that Katrina does when Paula reacts to certain scenes, not just in this episode but in every one, I get excited watching Paula react too, aha. Looking forward to when you two reach the series 10 finale, and another favorite of mine, series 12 ❤
Rory waits outside the Pandorica on Amy for 2000 years and he's a "romantic hero". I wait outside a woman's bedroom window one night and I'm a "stalker"... 😉
Also just so u know, during the classic series u never actually see the doctor steal the tardis and run away. In the very first episode he is already staying on earth in the 60s with his grandaughter attending a local school..for sum reason cant remember why exactly. And the tardis is already stuck as a police box, the dr just dusnt know it yet till part 2 of the first story
If you watch the music video for Guardians Inferno (for the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 soundtrack) you will see Karen Gillan perform 'The Drunk Giraffe', mimicking Matt Smith's wedding dance from this episode.
Did it EVER disturb you that at 11:20, the Dalek is asking for "Mercy"? Because we LATER learn that Daleks can't say the word 'mercy'? Which means- the Dalek that River kills is souffle girl / Clara?
If you thought this episode got wibbly wobbly just wait until you get to next season. Not just one episode next season, just the entire season is all weird and wibbly, well you know the rest.
There is a meme out there. It shows Rory, Amy, and the Doctor. The caption reads as follows:
"Amy's Boys."
"One is the man of her dreams. A hero of impossible bravery who is older than he looks and who's exploits are the stuff of legend."
"The other is the Doctor."
If you listen really closely as Amy jumps over the table you can hear Rory say to Amy's mum "I was plastic! He was the stripper at my stag do". Cracks me up every time.
i have never heard that before XD thanks for bringing it to light for me :)
Yup I caught that lol. I watch everything with headphones for the past several years and you catch SO much more with regard to audio that way.

I didn't realise this before I commented, this line is appreciated by me 👌
That’s why the doctor is so good
That's also why the doctor gave the speech to small Amy about the old and new borrowed blue box. He is smart.

Great reaction! I agree 100% about Rory, he's one of my all time favorite companions. Lots of great moments in this, I'm so pleased to see you both enjoying it so much.
Another brilliant reaction...I have seen, but it feels like yearse ago...Love from Scotland xxxxxx
season 5 was one hell of a roller coaster. And i love it!
I cannot wait to see y'all reaction as you further progress through the next few seasons! A lot of great stuff happens.
It’s funny, I thought if you could hear me I could hang on somehow - I love this monologue sooo much, definitely one of my favourites to re-watch
It's funny, the way Paula feels about Moffatt is the same way I feel about RTD (substituting "technobabble and contrived happenstance" for "convoluted plots").
oh Man, next season, just wow :) Look forward to the christmas special too
"Come along Pond ..."
And they both went...
*Ponds
I know i've posted this the last few videos, but please watch the mini episodes "TIme and Space" before season 6. They are entirely set on the TARDIS, but they are a lot of fun. Do watch "A Christmas Carol" first though. Its also worth watching the Sarah Jane Adventures "Death of the Doctor" before series 6. It's the last real episode/episodes written by Russell T Davies.
If you do, remember they were done for Comic Relief.
I know Paula mentioned in her Twitch stream recently that it might be awhile before y'all start Season 6. Here's to hoping y'alll get to it soon!
"Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue"
Really...a pause? What am I going to do on Thursday nights? Honestly....
I mean, I’ve been out and panic bought half a ton of tissues as well....
Oh, I hope it's not too long! The opener to season six is incredible.
Paula figured it out. So happy.
I love how Rory's introduced as a bit of a bumbler, but by the end of the season he's a total badass.
I've been watching Classic Who and it's amazing that you can tell it's still the Doctor, every regeneration.
10:29 that realisation 😂
Kats eyebrow wiggles are the best
This is the first DW season i watched and i love it so much❤️
One of the greatest episodes!! It’s so beautiful and wobbly and sweet and the music is the best
Well done gals, surviving Quarantine and the series - hopefully great writing and great tv is helping so many through lockdown, crying laughing sharing keeps you sane! Stay Safe!
"Moffat you get a pass this time" OMG I AGREE WITH PAULA 100% HERE
I kind of want to watch you girls rewatch them all once we’ve finished season 12 😂
I just realised, I’m sure it’s too late, but I usually recommend putting this next Christmas special off to the side to watch at Christmas. It doesn’t really advance the storyline at all, and is a great Christmas viewing experience in it’s own rights.
Rory-dead from a previous episode.
Amy - killed by Rory the Nestene duplicate
TARDIS-explodes
Universe-death by exploding TARDIS
River - dies in exploding TARDIS time loop
Amelia-wiped from existence
The Doctor-[near] death by Dalek
Dalek-death b River
The Doctor-death by Big Bang 2
Just this once EVERYBODY DIES!!!
21:23 don't fear! Haha
11 is my doctor, Rory and Amy are my companions, with Donna. Great to see you arrive here.
Moffat did seem to have some threads that he didn’t know where they were going
Getting ready to watch! I have been SOOOOOO anticipating this reaction!!!
Moffat writes some of the best and LONGEST story arcs in Who.
Great finale, can't wait for the next series.
Ok, so here's my theory on Rory, as nobody in real life is that perfect:
At first Amy loved him, but not entirely and she was having cold feet before the wedding, so she runs away with the Doctor.
19:03
It's really good he showed up, or they would have been holding the reception in a hospital room.
Pausing at 10:43 to say...I hope you included the entire River vs Dalek scene 😊
I rewatched from 9th on starting back in October (had to take a break Jan-May due to it leaving Amazon and not coming onto HBO Max until late May) but it has been a real treat revisiting this series.
I even got into Clara and Capaldi much more being able to watch them quicker, rather than waiting a week between episodes and a year between seasons.
nothing says sorry for killing you, like guarding your body for 2000 years
tip to the hat (centurion helmet) to "The Boy Who Waited", 2000 years what a bloody champion
If you love River as much as I do check out The Diary of River Song. A series of audiobooks on Big Finish that show River’s adventures. Her blue book.
I made River's handgun. And she stole my trousers.
Great reaction video, Sniffles Gals!
Now on to Season 6!
love looking at your happy face at the end, smiles, tears true whovian right there!
All these years later; not just from when I first saw this episode, but from way back when I watched Planet of the Spiders, that moment when Plastic!Rory hunkers down to guard the Pandorica is the single most beautiful moment of Doctor Who for me, kerk
Best reaction so far, thank you and awesome job Paula and Katrina!
Paula: I FIGURED this show out
Whovians watching you: People usually need a flow chart. Btw how freaking menacing must you be for the Daleks, the freaking Daleks crap themselves
Just caught up on your Doctor Who reactions. Looking forward to seeing more!
Man I can't wait for the next series 🙌
I was so waiting for this! Congratz Paula, you are figuring Moffat out!
Did you catch the joke? "What sort of time do you call this?"
TIME ISN'T MOVING at all.
Steven Moffat loves painting himself into a wall and figuring out how to get out of it
Great Reactions Girls. I think Steven Moffat is a great Writer. His stories can fool you so easily.
Damn. Paula had a whole brain blast. That was awesome to watch to see her figuring it out
Love the facial expressions that Katrina does when Paula reacts to certain scenes, not just in this episode but in every one, I get excited watching Paula react too, aha.
Looking forward to when you two reach the series 10 finale, and another favorite of mine, series 12 ❤
Rory waits outside the Pandorica on Amy for 2000 years and he's a "romantic hero". I wait outside a woman's bedroom window one night and I'm a "stalker"...
😉
I say something similar:
If a woman wears nothing but a man's dress shirt, it's "cute and sexy", if I do it, I'm "drunk and need to leave Walmart". 🤣
It takes 2000 years for a simp to be cool
"I can buy a Fez"
More Moffat shenanigans are in the doctor who lockdown specials, some are for later episodes but there is a nice one for the girl in the fireplace
@8:36 “He’s going to give himself a nosebleed” Is that a Life Is Strange reference I detect?
If you watch the music video for Guardians Inferno (for the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 soundtrack) you will see Karen Gillan perform 'The Drunk Giraffe', mimicking Matt Smith's wedding dance from this episode.
8:36 Perfect timing!!
18:20 void kitty behind Paula
Season 6 next, best season ever...
*Series* six! ;)
Missing these reactions, hope you're back soon. :-)
Female fans of the show now judge boyfriends by the metric "Would he guard my body for 2000 years?"
This was my all-time most favourite episode out of 50 years of Doctor Who ... until the one that's coming soon ;)
