Despite this episode containing one of the highest rated Doctor speeches, the funny thing is the epic speech he does is just him being played for a fool. The ships above weren't afraid of him or fighting against each other, they were just waiting, his whole speech was just them encouraging his ego and letting him think he was in control.

I love this speech :) but it's because of how funny the cockiness is to me. "Do the smart thing. Let someone else try first." haha!
Kinda like that Taylor Swift music video for "Shake It Off." The song has trumpets, which are super cocky, but the video is her being clumsy. The trumpets make it super funny.

That's kinda the neat thing though. For the first time, all of the Doctor's enemies have him dead to rights. They finally figured him out enough to finally defeat him. And it's by letting him be the smartest guy in the room. The Doctor, for all his greatness, suffers from a common flaw of great men: His ego. Yeah, most of the time, it works out. And sometimes, he traps himself.

    • @alextrill1746
      @alextrill1746 7 месяцев назад +2

Honestly, I think they still got scared for a moment. Because he's the Doctor. What if he figured out their plan and is already preparing their destruction?
Yes, they have him dead to rights. Yes, it is a perfect trap, with a perfect bait, relying on Doctor's own flaws. Yes, they are all working together.
      But he's THE DOCTOR.

"There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior. A nameless terrible thing soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies, the most feared being in all the cosmos." The show has pulled many big twists throughout its long history, but I never fail to be impressed by the revelation that the Pandorica was created by all these monsters to trap the Doctor. Obviously all these monsters would see the Doctor as this terrifying powerful being that would destroy everything they fight for, yet it never really occurs to you until it's finally revealed to you.
I adore this episode. It's probably the best set-up for a finale that we've had, being this big, sprawling epic jammed packed with shocking twists that come along every couple of minutes. The Pandorica Opens is an emotional roller-coaster, managing to fit in some cracking jokes, a couple of scary moments (i.e. the headless Cyberman) and plenty of exhilarating punch-the-air moments before that downer of an ending. Matt Smith is at the top of his game here, with his speech to the assembled aliens being one of the high-points of his tenure, which is contrasted by his shock and desperation as the true goal of the aliens is revealed. The way the script pulls together all the strands set up over the series relating to the cracks and finally pays them off is immensely satisfying.
And the ending of the episode is magnificent. All cliffhangers need to have something go wrong for our heroes, but I don't think there's actually been an ending where everything that could conceivably go wrong goes wrong: Amy is dead, killed by an Auton duplicate of her fiancé in one of the cruellest bait-and-switches of the entire series; River is trapped in the TARDIS by an unknown force that proceeds to blow up the ship, taking the entire universe with it (also kudos to Alex Kingston for managing to convey River's terror, desperation and eventual resignation throughout the sequence); and the Doctor, the only man who has the power to stop the end of the universe, is trapped in an inescapable prison by all his worst enemies in a misguided attempt to save all of creation. All of it set to one of Murray Gold's most beautiful and heartbreaking tracks. It's quite a shocking ending to this fantastic episode, and perfectly sets the stage for the finale. Brace yourselves, this is where it gets complicated...

wow, Moffat is so good at foreshadowing: "warrior", "nameless." There's even the episode called "Let's Kill Hitler," and I don't think most people understand that the point of that episode is to show how the killer views the target - as the actual worst person in all of time and space. The quote you give points to that, too! Not to mention all of the times the Doctor defeats the bad guys (Matt's first episode, in the library, with the executioners) by just saying "look me up" :)

The Doctor is the one who was there at the dawn of the Daleks, tried to fight their war, ran back across the universe leading them from world to world, as he passed judgement on whole civilizations, drawing the Daleks and Cybermen with him, angering whole species, bringing his enemies with him to Gallifrey which he destroyed in the Time War.
The Doctor is the most insidious and uncaring, self-centered villain in the history of pulp.

This was the very first episode of Doctor Who I ever saw and I love it to death. Still remember sitting in class on a rain day when the teacher put this on the projector to keep us occupied, I parked my chair right in front of the screen while most of the class were just talking. After that I jumped back to Series 1 and watched it all the way through to series 5 and eventually dived into the Classic and Wilderness era stuff.
Rewatching it through these reactions really reminds me how good it was and why I loved it so much. I like Rory a lot more where I just thought he was alright before. I think it's the most consistently good part of Moffat's run and benefitted from bringing in a bit more of a story arc to speculate on while mostly following the formula that came before. RTD's era was good but it did feel a bit repetitive how each arc introduced a new set of words to look out for and how a new companion came each season (didn't help that Martha was kind of a rebound companion). The rest of Moffat's run experimented a bit with the series structure splitting it into two parts for Series 6 and 7, and in Capaldi's time the show went back to what it was before and suddenly there was a whole season of multipart stories. I know this was also due to Moffat being split between different shows and not being able to find a successor but I don't think it paid off unfortunately.
I do think Moffat overpromised and couldn't fully deliver on what he sets up in this finale but it's still a great ride, and he fucking nailed it with The Day of the Doctor which was a great culmination of what the RTD era and his own were trying to do.

It's like (spoilers for infinity war I guess) in infinity war, when they all turned to dust. Some of my family said it didn't have any effect on them as they knew they'd be back, but it had an effect on me dispite knowing that, because hearing the fear in Peter Parkers voice and Tony Starks reaction to losing him was the real emotional blow, not the fact that it was forever. I loved this episode but I was a little surprised when the next episode opened with Patrick Duffy daydreaming in the shower.

You were so busy talking about Jack as if he's the only time agent ever, that you missed the joke where blue guy goes "I said OFF the wrist!"

It's confirmed (via WoG) that basically every time-agent associated thing River has belonged to Jack first. That's his damn Squareness Gun she's using to scare romans here. It's almost certainly his vortex manipulator.

They start filming Series 13 of Doctor Who in September. Have you ever thought of writing to Chris Chibnall at the BBC, give him your details and things you have been in and asked him to consider you if they need a young American Woman?

The Pandorica Speech...not really the biggest bluff. With The Doctor, there's ALWAYS that chance he'll make good on even a universe shaking threat and they are NOT wanting to take that chance. :)

I'm nitpicking I guess but I never liked how the crack in time was supposed to erase people entirely from history when really all it did was erase memories of them. Everything in the universe carried on the same way as if they had existed up to that point.

The one big takeaway from this episode to me, is just how absolutely reckless and arrogant the Time Lords were - to make and use technology that, if malfunctioned or damaged, had the potential to erase all of existence - even a lesser issue could easily cause irreparable damage to other people or themselves. It's like they're driving around nuclear-powered cars... but infinitely worse.

For me, it's like seeing it with new eyes. BUT -- I do NOT understand why you gals are wasting your time on dreck like STAR TREK: THE NEXT REGURGITATION. There are so many better shows that deserve your attention. Like, I'd bet that neither of you have seen the original run of THE PRISONER or the two seasons of THE AVENGERS that featured Disna Rigg as Mrs. Emma Peel. Even ENTERPRISE would be better. (Seriously, MUCH better). And I won't even mention FARSCAPE (see what I did there?).
