    Lyrics:
    I'll remember it
    And Dublin in a rainstorm
And sitting in the long grass in summer
    Keeping warm
    I'll remember it
    Every restless night
    We were so young then
    We thought that everything
We could possibly do were the right
    Then we moved
    Stolen from our very eyes
And I wondered where you went to
Tell me when did the light die
    You will rise
    You'll return
    The phoenix from the flame
    You will learn
    You will rise
    You'll return
    Being what you are
    There is no other Troy
    For you to burn
And I never meant to hurt you
    I swear I didn't mean
    Those things I said
I never meant to do that to you
Next time I'll keep my hands to myself instead
    Oh, does she love you
What do you want to do?
Does she need you like I do?
    Do you love her?
    Is she good for you?
Does she hold you like I do?
    Do you want me?
    Should I leave?
I know you're always telling me
    That you love me
    Just sometimes I wonder
    If I should believe
    Oh, I love you
    God, I love you
I'd kill a dragon for you
    I'll die
    But I will rise
    And I will return
    The Phoenix from the flame
    I have learned
    I will rise
    And you'll see me return
    Being what I am
    There is no other Troy
    For me to burn
And you should've left the light on
You should've left the light on
    Then I wouldn't have tried
    And you'd never have known
And I wouldn't have pulled you tighter
No I wouldn't have pulled you close
    I wouldn't have screamed
No I can't let you go
    And the door wasn't closed
No I wouldn't have pulled you to me
No I wouldn't have kissed your face
You wouldn't have begged me to hold you
If we hadn't been there in the first place
Oh but I know you wanted me to be there oh oh
Every look that you threw told me so
But you should've left the light on
You should've left the light on
    And the flames burned away
    But you're still spitting fire
Make no difference what you say
    You're still a liar
    You're still a liar
    You're still a liar

The "You should have left a light on" refers to her cruel mother, who locked Sinéad out of the house and made her sleep in the garden shed. Sinéad used to call up to her mother begging her to let her in, or at least leave the light on. But the cries were ignored and the light coldly switched off. RIP Sinéad. You were great. I do agree her music was more emotive in the beginning, really grabbed one's heartstrings, and I admire your view, but it did not stop at 'The Lion & The Cobra'....for me, Sinead’s music isn’t supposed to sound catchy. It isn’t necessarily about the instruments, but about the instruments following or guiding her voice [the main instrument], and her voice is one of the best in the industry! Her melodies aren’t defined in the realms of mastering techniques, compression, high-polished guitar solo’s, synth lines, etc.. Her music doesn’t follow the predictable rhythm of what sounds fresh to the ear. That’s what separates her from the streetwalkers of the music industry who’ll work with just about anybody to make a quick buck or grab the latest sound. The backbone and substance of O’Connor’s songs are rooted in authentic storytelling, they cannot be sold off or edited for commercial approval, producer favor, which is significant in her genuine the emotive melodies that align perfectly through lyrics and topics that either uplift you or aggravate you. Her story has to be felt with the listener or it won’t be understood. That’s honestly what music is supposed to be like. I know that for me, I can feel her sensitive soul shine, ignite and fill that euphonious framework with a zealot passion that refuses to be forgotten. To me that extends just mere talent.

Sinead’s debut single, released in 1987, 2-3 years before her big hit Prince cover that most people only know her for.
I’m still riddled with guilt that I forgot about her and how good she was.
It’s a shame half the world and the media turned their back on her because she dared to tell the truth.
If more people listened they could have saved 10 years of child abuse in the Catholic Church and other places before they took action.

Sinéad was a kindred soul, one of the few who could convey the raw emotion that she was feeling through her vocals. You could feel the abuse that her mother had put her through when she was younger, and she let it all out here. Thank you, Sinéad. You may be gone, but your memory will never be forgotten by anyone. May you finally find eternal peace.

First time I have been able to hear this song in years. When it came out, I had my heart badly broken for the first time, by a man from Dublin. So many songs through her career had resonance for me. Beautiful, vulnerable, formidable, and fearless woman. Thank you for singing your soul. Sleep sweetly, Sinead. You so deserve to. ❤

This is one of the best songs on the planet, it is SO iconic. I get goosebumps every time I hear it, it still moves me as much as it did when I first heard it so many years ago. RIP Sinead

Definitely extraordinary. But she got a lot from the world tho, didn't she? What more can you ask than these chances she had and this sort of career - countless people were as talented and never got this break. Everything else is of your own making then.
