Lyrics:
She took my father from my life oh
Took my sister and brothers oh
I watched her torturing my child
Feeble I was then but now I'm grown
Fire on babylon
Oh yes a change has come
Fire on babylon
Fire
Fire
Fire
She's taken everything I liked
She's taken every lover oh
And all along she gave me lies
Just to make me think I loved her
Fire on babylon
Oh yes a change has come
Look what she did to her son
Fire
Fire
Fire on
Life's backwards
Life's backwards
People turn around
The house is burned
The house is burned
The children are gone
Fire
Fire
Fire on babylon
Oh yes a change has come
Fire on babylon
Fire
Fire, oh
Fire, oh
Fire on babylon
Oh yes a change has come
Look what she did to her son
Look what she did to her son
Fire, haha
Fire, haha
Fire
Fire
Fire, aha
Fire on babylon
Fire on babylon

I was never a huge Sinead fan in her heyday - until she absolutely changed my mind in a moment at an outdoor music festival. I was fortunate to see her live in Vancouver in 1995 before she left the 95 Lollapalooza Tour early. I will never forget when she came on - some really terrible punk band had played and other than a 50 or so punk heads moshing out - the main stage audience had cleared out to walk around, check out side stages etc - then Sinead comes on - almost to no fanfare or applause - all the punk kids took one look at her and just left stage front area - and she started in quietly with Fire in Babylon - then when she belted out the chorus of "FIRE......." - it brought about 15 thousand people to a dead stop as everyone looked at the stage. I have never before or since heard a voice like that - it was just incredible listening to her sing with such... beautiful abandon. People immediately rushed back to the main stage and everyone ( and I mean everyone -even the punk kids and head bangers that were just there to rage out and mosh) were just transfixed by her voice. One of the most beautiful sounds I have heard in these 48 years on this planet. When she finished the entire place erupted in cheers for her. One of my favorite concert memories.
O just wept reading this.
Good for her 👍
I'm 55 from the the same country as her
She's our Queen
She spoke truth
Love you Sinead
And thankyou to for giving her a go
God bless
Sinéad O'Connor`s voice has incrediball level! Some opera singers tried to sing her songs, and they failed!
To me personally Sinéad O'Connor is one of the greatest artists in our world!
@@chilloutzone2732 bless you and I'm sure Sinead is blessing you to
And so am I

The fiercest woman in the music industry in many decades, haunted by life and always speaking the truth. Just so incredibly talented, music that comes from the soul. We love you Sinead. RIP.
Only dumb people use the word MUSIC INDUSTRY all the time, wanting to sound self important and aggrandized. There is no such thing as music industry. It's a business like any other and, if you don't like, it, just fuck off and stay away from it.
Of the billions of years the universe has existed, I'm beyond appreciative that I was lucky to live at just the right time to enjoy her music. Rest in peace Sinead.
This is beautifully spoken. Right with you. Thank you.
Thank you for your comment.
Sorry - Only just saw your comment. Thank you, I totally agree.
Agreed!
R.I.P. Sinéad. This is such a brave and powerful song. Thank you for your voice, your words, your brilliance.
As much as the woman and queen she will always be.
As brilliant as the video (and obv Prince song) is for Nothing Compares that the media are pumping out relentlessly over the last day as if that was the only thing she had ever done, I wish they would show some clips or compilations of her own stuff. Fire on Babylon is indicative of the pure genius that was Sinead O'Connor. And there are many, many more. The media are underselling her. But then again, was that ever so. Evocative, real and haunting. RIP Sinead.
She was ahead of her time. Her activism got her blacklisted in the 90's, but today that's what people want. Honesty and integrity
Woman of Strength and 🔥✌Thank You for your Work Sinead x
Sinead is one of the bravest people I know alive today. She did nothing wrong. She just told her truth. People did not want to hear the truth. She is and will always be amazing in my eyes. I love her bravery so much.
Absolutely. She came to shake things up and she did. Genius looks insane to fools.
RIP
As far as the Catholic Church, she spoke a universal truth. Not just her Truth. In so many arenas she was repudiated, yet ten years later the Church worldwide imploded due specifically to what Sinead pointed out.
@@someoneanyone884she told her truth and paid the price.
Absolutely
I'm reading her book now and this song is about all her pent up anger at her abusive mother. That's why this video is so intense. 💔
I wish she could have experienced the love and tenderness she deserved in this life. I wish she could have stayed.
I’m listening to Sinead’s book, Rememberings. She narrates the book herself. I had to come watch this video after she spoke about what this song means. She and her siblings had such rough childhoods at the hands of their mother. Yet, Sinead was such a good soul. Rest easy, Sinead. You’re missed.💔
I have loved this song since it was released but has never seen the video until today, after reading the same bit in her book! ❤
She's j3w... This talk about Blood libels.. she always said it's truth...
No, she wasn't a good soul. At the end she went crazy and racist towards white people, after converting to islam. I love her as a vocalist, but she was a mess.
The same here...tbh I'm thankful I didn't know the full story at the time I first heard & loved her music as it would've been too painful to listen 😢
In the video at the end she is Joan Of Arc, a French catholic saint and warrior . Sinead, we will never forget you. Thank you for the memories, thank you for the music. R.I.P
Or Mikel Arcángelo ♥️
Sinéad possessed one of the most striking voices i've ever heard. It truly sends shivers down my spine whenever i hear her belt it out like that with soulful abandon. I'm saddened that this amazing fierce woman is no longer with us but i can only hope her soul is in a happier place. RIP
RIP, angel. Hopefully she's finally found the peace she never truly got in life.
This is one of the greatest most well-made music videos ever! Michel Gondry is a genius! And what a song! Amazing voice and eerie vocal delivery by Sinead.
Michel Gondry is probably my favorite music video director. So much craft and creativity to his work.
Вот это исполнение - мурашки по голос , спасибо Шинейд ...😘🔥
Song and video operating on such a high level there's almost too much to say - hasn't lost a thing for me decades later, here's to real spirit.
Her voice was magically eerie, and her cries & bellows were soul piercing. Her pain was tangible in her voice. May she R.I.P ❤
One of my ultimate favorite songs by this beautiful, sensitive soul. My heart breaks for you, Sinead. I'm devastated by your passing. I wish you all the peace you could not find on this earth.

Wow, I'm a 62 year old man and I'm tearing up ... such a powerful and beautiful voice .. nothing compares 2 U Sinead
Thanks for sharing that, Stargazer! Her voice gives me chills! Check out her video with the Chieftains, The Foggy Dew. It literally gives me goose bumps her voice is so clear and beautiful.
What a powerful song and a music video❤🙌🏻As a I child abuse survivor, I can’t watch it without tears in my eyes. But it’s so important to talk about this in any forms, especially in such beautifully made artistic ones❤
Sinead O'Connor is a literal genius. She has the passion and fire of a million furies...with the voice and face of an angel. We love you, Sinead!
This video is nice but doesn't even approximately mirror the essential intend of this song.... nowadays gnostic statements are worth nothing more..... but this gnostic statement needs a bigger screen than a new rich home chamber sitcom video.... This song writes history because of the lyrics.....
lol, imbeciles congregation, i see. the woman is a raging moron with bipolar tendencies. genius? oh, boy...
She was a musical genius in the past. Today she's a psychotic mess who converted to Islam and now hates whoever is not Muslim. Crazy...
McGigi666 so judgemental, I wonder what state you'd be in if you'd been through what she has.
@@McGigi666 Fuck off and get off the is damn page with your hate
Your music has been a comfort during the tormenting bouts of insanity and your life was an inspiration which I always strove to imitate during my brief moments of lucidity.
My heart is beyond broken! You paid your dues and the whole world owes you! The world lost its fiercest warrior today. More a man than any man, a great brother in time of need, and a mother/father of the church that was most sorely needed. Thank you for tearing down Popes that needed to be, and thank you for not bowing before any king!
I love you S.O.!
Rest in peace. The world has lost one of its best voices. 😢😢😢😢
RIP- I love your brutal honesty, your amazing music, and YOUR VOICE! You will be missed
I still remember the shivers I got when I heard this song for the first time in late 90' Sadly, there was no internet, and no one I've known had listened to her music. I've waited many years to hear this piece of art again, and her amazing voice still gets me shivers..
i had the same shivers, still have. btw, there was Internet in late 90.:)
This song was released in 1994.
@@daviddeutschland6123 It wasn't until the summer of 1996 that we had satellite TV and received music channels like Viva. Previously we only had 4 local channels. I was 9 years old then.
When she belts out those notes, it's literally chill-inducing.
Just read her book "Rememberings" or at least some of the things she chooses to remember, her voice has always been beautiful, as is she, both inside and out, I've always held a soft spot for Sinead, one of Ireland's treasures, for which I hope they know.
I used to listen to this song daily on 12in vinyl which i still own. Thank you for your strength Sinead, rest easy now your work is done.
If Kurt was GenX's sensitive angry masculine side, then Sinéad was GenX's sensitive angry feminine side. Rest In Peace Ms. O'Connor...and thank you
That's so powerful. I really burst into tears when I watched this video. Especially after reading her memoirs one can feel the pain with their own skin. It's impossible to imagine in what kind of emotional mental distress or disorder should person be to do such horrible things to their own children. Sinead grew up to be an amazing person and musician despite of all that, she is definitely one of my role models, probably because she is not perfect, but so bright and sincere, so genuine.
Sinead, if you can still hear us, you really helped. We knew we weren't alone. Life is a series of hellos and goodbyes intermingled with moments of preciousness and pain. Love what you shared with us.
Coming from an abusive relationship with my mother, who actually committed a suicide this does resemble on many levels. Even the little shots where her mom tried to take care of her wounds or cut her nails, I remember how my mom used to terrify me by trying to do those things. Coming home was always like coming to a war zone, but you love and want to try and help your enemy. Damn, this does bring up lots of scary memories, I hope this video will help some stop from repeating same mistakes
Hope your ok and well
Good God the sheer *POWER* and *PASSION* in this woman’s voice. It makes my eyes water and the hairs on the back on my neck stand up and quiver… A million cheers and bravos from Canada Sweet Miss Sinéad.

So her music should come with grooming kits. Ha ha
:( que tristeza me da su partida... gracias a mi mamá conocí a esta maravillosa artista, de voz potente y única... R.I.P Sinéad O'Connor.
No one can deny her voice, beautiful in every detail.
100% agreed, and that's coming from someone who generally doesn't like the sound of Irish accents.
She was a true artist. Uncompromising to the very end. So glad I discovered her music early on. The Lion and the Cobra is still a great listen. Thank you, Sinead, for your voice, your courage, and commitment to producing excellent music, like this song. Gone but never forgotten.
Rest in peace Sinead. This song explains it all.
Absolutely courageous artist. So hard to control true genius takes; so hard to rein it in. Sinead blasted on through her beautiful, terrifying madness with her amazing power drawn from the deepest depths of her soul. From a whisper to a howling shout, she once said that all of her music is autobiographical, meaning purely authentic. Her challenge of the Catholic Church was so brave; imagine taking on that massive, entrenched, patriarchal institution, having spent time as a young woman in one of their notorious homes for wayward, rebellious girls. Abused, denigrated, a warrior of the heart and soul, of true love. God bless Sinead.
What a beautiful thing to say
❤
Chills. Every individual I've ever known who survived abuse -- their terror/anguish/fear.
Love her indictment and defiance; resonates deeply with me from my own experience as well (repression, secrets, shame, nightmares, isolation).

Hugs to all.
I used to sit in court. I hated hearing these heart breaking stories smh.
Fearless, brave, misunderstood. A true genius. Imagine the bravery to be an Irish Catholic woman standing up to the Catholic Church. Rest in peace. Fave song.
I stood up to the Catholic Church when I was ten years old, whats the big deal. Also in a Catholic country. No one gave ME grammies or interviews, or record deals or money for it. All your comments only show how utterly stupid this world has now become and how idiotic the masses and how completely manipulated and dumbed down they are. They have nothing but shit in their so called brains and keep farting it out in big brown stinking wet clouds of moist caca.
The voice of an angel, with rage. 💖
is there any other way for a conscientious angel to be in this world?!?!
This is the most spot-on description of her voice I have heard. Thank you.

Thank You Sinead...for these precious gifts of Song and Music..." Nothing Compares to You. " 🌹💔😇😥
I can't pick a single favourite Sinead song, but this is definitely in my top 10.
So talented, creative and beautiful. She expressed herself as fully as she could in this life - no small feat
This song gives me chills and goosebumps every time I listen to the lyrics.
After hearing what her childhood was like, I just want to cry!
True, but not ALL of what is said, is true.. and there are ALWAYS 2 sides to EVERY story.
How about breaking the cycle!!!!?? 😢
I had a shit childhood too, and a HORRID tween/teen 'existence' (not life!) ..UNTIL I was pregnant with my daughter, at 16.
No WAY was I repeating the same mistakes!!
@Boomer Nick I think she's bi-polar.
@@romb4649 she did break the cycle. This is the most powerful way she did. Through her words and music. And if you were abused why would you find a way to come down on her?
She had it rough. Most of us did.
@@romb4649 there are 3 sides to every story! His side, her side, and the Truth!
Recently found out about her childhood, so this video really is moving.
she's a warrior.
Pops bought me this CD at a flea market. I was raised on guitar based rock (and I don't hate that) but in HS I def was trying to branch out and listen to anything new - this track was like a slap in the face as far as how huge music without a big guitar riff can still be. Life changing.

Her memoir is FANTASTIC
This songs means so much to me. I've always loved, and respected, Sinéad. x
This is still my favourite song of hers "Emperor's" is a close second. I know not the one many people think of for an intro to this wonderful lady. It is the one that made me fall in love with her music.
We may be wondering "Why?" and may continue to do so after her sad death, and she was so young only 8 years older than I, atleast she is now at peace the small sliver of comfort we can take from this tragedy. I can't even imagine what she went through in the last year since her young son killed himself.
My thoughts and prayers go to those family members and loved ones who have lost her.
Rest in peace, sweet Queen. We love you forever Sinead
THIS SONG IS SO SAD, CAUSE IT IS TRUE IN MANY WAYS, IN HER LIFE AND MANY ANOTHER CHILDREN. that is the art of this song .

I love you
One of The Greatest has left us.
Whoah. Just read the lyrics I know she wrote this about her mother...who was extremely abusive to her and her siblings. I wish she would write an autobiography. Sinead is such a deep and brilliant woman!
She is finally happy and letting faith move her forward.
Her memoirs are coming out in 2021!
I read decades ago that she write it as a slam against Great Britain. And what England in particular did to Ireland over the yrs. Never any mentiinon of her mom
She did! Her memoirs is coming out now in 2021.
@@Angel-rq3pi She wrote "Famine" about some of all of that. This seems a little more personal: in the familial way.
addendum: I just checked the wikipedia page (ikr?) on this song and a reviewer listed therein connected the "whore of Babylon" in the lyrics "seemingly with the British Empire". Interestingly it also says there that this amazing song "didn't chart in the UK"! Although it did reach the top thirty here in Aotearoa/New Zealand. 💙
Much love Sinead. Those who know know and loved and adored you. Hope you feel the warmth and love in your next transition. You ain’t done, swift return to you. Peace.
