This was my absolute FAVORITE movie when I was super little! I still remember getting my first Buzz-Lightyear for Christmas and throwing him, because I wanted to see him fly! ^^; As a side note, that year we were at my grandparents' house for the holiday and we threw all the wrapping paper into a big, cardboard box. When I threw Buzz, he landed square in the box, and my Dad was next to it and noticed the sound Buzz made when landing. He even laughed a little, understandably.

Buzz was never competing for Andy's love... He thought he was a real spaceman trying to get home. That's what made his and Woody's conflict all the more interesting... They each saw the other as the antagonist of their own completely different narratives, which happened to be at odds with one another anyway until trauma forced them to confront reality. It took both of their dreams crashing down (Buzz realizing he's just a toy and Woody realizing he's unable to compete with Buzz for Andy's affection) for them to both accept their lives and work together and return to Andy.
Also, Disney was doing great when Toy Story came out in '95... Ever heard of Lion King?? Classic cartoon Disney was still high in my opinion.

@@SomeRUclipsTravelerasically NC was referring to the downfall of "Pocahontas" that same year but that wouldn't have contrasted much with the success of "Toy Story", plus that was more of a disappointment more than anything. But I completely agree that Doug pretty much either misunderstood the message about Buzz or glossed over it when doing this review to avoid getting into spoilers by simplifying it to both toys when the crux of the conflict was precisely one for Woody, and another for Buzz which both come together at the end in the most perfect way possible.

    • @leoprince691

@SomeRUclipsTraveler he was referring to after Lion King. Pocahontas wasn't that big of a hit and neither were any Disney movie that came out the rest of that decade (they were modest hits at best. They were all still successful, but nowhere near the level of their early 90s films). So yeah, NC is right that Disney wasn't doing great anymore when Toy Story came out.

    • @MrGittz
      @MrGittz 5 лет назад +3

Maddalonefarms I know right? What the hell was he talking about? Disney was on fire at this point. They were printing money. Lion King did twice the business that Toy Story did. Aladin, Little Mermaid, Roger Rabbit, Great Mouse Detective, Beauty & The Beast. Then he goes on a weird ass rant about how people got tired of CGI. The fuck? Cgi is just a tool, same as any other production method. He acts like they didn't make shitty special effect movies in the '80s. Only difference in the '90s those shitty special effect movies looked a bit better. Instead of CGI they used models and minature & matte paintings. Look at the top films of all time. Notice something in common? They all have special effects. Some have CGI, others have models. No one got tired of anything. People just want to see a good fucking movie. They don't care if it's told with CGI, stop motion or paper cut outs. A good movie is a good movie. The tool used to tell that story is just a tool. That's it. Come on Doug. Do some research before you make statements like Disney wasn't bringing in money on 2D animation.

This film was released in 1995, the same year Pocahontas came out. And he said in his Disneycember for Pocahontas that many people feel that film started the downfall of Disney's hand drawn animation. Though I really don't believe that's the case at all.

    • @OakViewFilms

When I was 7, this was my favorite movie. At the time, I could only watch videos on the weekend(so I was not just watching movies, I guess) and so every Saturday and/or Sunday I would watch Toy Story.
My Grandma on my Dad's side had the VHS so I would watch it whenever I went over there, but then one day I was like "I want to watch Toy Story!" and she responded "No, let's watch anything BUT Toy Story!"
My grandparents on my Mom's side had it as well in their small collection, so I watched that copy often as well. The obsession ended when I was around 8, but I still saw it every so often, especially with my sister. More on that in a minute.
By the time I was 12, I could say with certainty that I have literally seen Toy Story over 100 times.
I saw it a couple of times in my teen years, but that was it. From ages 17-22, I never saw it. (I am 22 now.)
On October 10th, 2020, I went to a garage sale and they had Toy Story on DVD- and the 10th anniversary, no less! I only had some change on me, so I asked if I could have it for 50 cents. The woman said that she would do that, but it was a friend's and she wanted $2 for her DVDs. Disappointed, I told her that I understood, and put it back. I was looking around in the garage, and I told myself that I would have another chance to get it.
Finally, the woman came to me and said "You know what? If you really want it, you can just have it!" I was like "REALLY?" I thanked her about a dozen times before I left with the family members I was with, and I watched it soon after, half at my aunt's and half at home.
(EMOTIONAL) Remember how I said that I would talk more about my sister? Well, she actually passed away a few years ago from causes I am not exactly sure of. She was mentally and physically challenged. The 2 of us watched Toy Story together quite often as well, as I have said.
When Sid blows up the Combat Carl, it hit me that I watched this with my sister a lot, and it was the week of the anniversary of her passing. I felt the need to pause the movie and run to the bathroom. When I was there, I burst out crying, and I don't cry much.
But you know what? It's my favorite Disney movie again, and I enjoy it even more looking at it from an animation perspective. If I cry over memories of seeing it, then it is still a great movie. I'm 22 and this is in my top 10! :)
    As of now(1/24/21):
    10. City Lights.
    9. The Night of the Hunter.
    8. My Fair Lady.
    7. Juno.
    6. Toy Story.
    5. Precious.
    4. Citizen Kane.
    3. 2001: A Space Odyssey.
    2. Life Itself.
    1. The Prince of Egypt.

The dog looks messed up because it's an English Bull Terrier, which are known to have the token "small triangular" eyes, but in Toy Story, his eyes are gigantic and have big brown pupils. It's creepy as hell lol

I like this review a lot, NC, but why is there CONSTANT DOUBLE MUSIC IN THE BACKGROUND?! It's driving me crazy. :)
Is it a mistake or is it there because of the copyright claims?

OMG, that opening section where it's playing three (more?) soundtracks at once, overlapping each other. IT HURTS US .

Sound mixing was a bit off. The music sounded like it was from a separate video playing at near the same volume.

Mission Impossible was awesome it shouldn't be lumped in with the shotty CGI of the mid to late 90s movies

@@TailsFan369no2 I feel that's only a few shots most of the shots in the climax are still quite amazing despite the CGI used

Getting tired of CG is like saying you're tired of playing video games.

Particularly in the beginning, but a small critique. There were times where the music seem to overpower what you were trying to say or at least was loud enough to be distracting.

    officially turns 25 today!
The movie that redefined animation for years to come thanks to PIXAR studios. Still looks great to this day.
Steve Jobs actually bought Lucasfilm's computer division in 1986 turning it into the stand-alone company. Although it was rough recovering from selling off the assets due to George Lucas' divorce in 1983.
Such an incredible premise with children's playthings coming to life.
My first introduction to Randy Newman's music. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen's most recognizable roles.
It also holds really important lessons about sharing the ones we love, learning to be less selfish, jealousy, neglect, abandonment, friendship, finding value in each other even if it fades, and fear of being tossed aside for something else.
Terrific themes of existentialism self-worth, heck there might even be biblical ties to Cain and Able. You could also apply the terrifying fear of being loved and being replaced and disposed of to the current gig economy, acknowledging the existence of failure.
The shattered illusion when Buzz realizes he's just a toy is pretty heavy.
I remember having several of the movie licensed toys, the read along and the Gameboy game. Heck there actually weren't any real-life brands in the movie and the movies have no set time period which helps give them a timeless feel.
Amazing that the series gave birth to a tv show, animated shorts, and specials.
The movie is still a classic to this day.
