    I think Andy was just kinda "putting on a show" for Bonnie. Showing how all of his favorite toys and why he loved them and just making her excited to have them

      Personally, I think Doug's complaint is stupid; Andy barely gets any screentime so they made the most out of his final moments with his Toys.
      Is it realistic? No. Of course not. But the film has obviously _earned_ that (admittedly sappy) moment.

      Paradox Acres I can agree with that. Him playing with the toys at the end works too. I mean he's playing with a little girl I feel like he would remember what he did as a kid.

      Urdnot Stark Right. It's not like he was just playing alone in his room & crying over his toys or something. He was goofing around with a little kid, kind of like an older brother would.

    Fun fact: Bo Peep was written out of the movie because the incinerator scene would have melted her. They wrote out a character for just ONE SCENE!

    • @kingkong381
      @kingkong381 7 лет назад +65

      SmilingPileOfPoop Wait, really?! Why?! That doesn't even make sense to me, I always thought Bo Peep was supposed to be a ceramic statuette rather than a plastic toy (she always looked a a little shinier/reflective than the plastic toys so I assumed that meant she was a polished/glazed ceramic material). I'm pretty sure ceramic doesn't melt (not that I'm an expert but as far as I know that's the case). Even if she was always supposed to be plastic that still doesn't make sense: Buzz is plastic (and if the actual Buzz toys that Disney released are any indication a shitty cheap and easily damaged plastic), Obviously Rex, Mr and Mrs Potatohead are plastic and Slink is at least partly plastic, the aliens are rubber and Woody, Jessie and Bullseye are mostly fabric and wool with plastic/rubber/vinyl heads, hats and buttons. That incinerator would have been devastating to all of them, that close they should have already begun to melt (or in
      Woody, Jessie and Bullseye's case just straight up burst into flames) so keeping Bo Peep out of it (if she was plastic) makes no goddamned sense. And if she was ceramic then at worst she'd have been charred black by the fire or smashed into pieces from a fall, she wouldn't have melted. That's got to be the dumbest reason to drop a character that I've ever heard.

    • @SheTigressRoam

  • @TheHarlequinHatter
    @TheHarlequinHatter 8 лет назад +357

    I actually disagree with you on an Andy's reaction in the end. You have to remember, Andy is a millennial. And as someone who was just starting college when Toy Story 3 came out, I can tell you that for our generation, this is very true for a lot of us. There's actually a lot of interesting writing on this theory thay Millennials are the most nostalgic generation at the youngest age in US history, because technology moved faster throughout our childhoods than it ever had in the past. this leads to our childhoods feeling further away than they really are. In fact a lot of people are calling us the nostalgic generation. I think that's why the ending hit so many Millennials so hard. Because we all feel like we are growing up in a time that's completely different from our childhoods. I mean, look at Andy's cell phone in the movie. This film is only a few years old, and that cell phone is ancient technology compared to what we have now. That's how fast everything is moving.
    I think I can say, for a lot of the kids who were just starting college when Toy Story 3 came out, it felt like we were growing up with Andy. He was always the same age as us, for all three films. Hate was never a big kid or little kid. He was us. So seeing him grow up, was kind of like looking in a mirror. I don't know about anyone else, but I know that looking back on my favorite TV shows, toys, comic books and stuff like that makes me very nostalgic and emotional even though I'm still in my early twenties. I mean go to a college campus, look how many kids you'll see wearing a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and Sonic the Hedgehog t shirts. We're just a nostalgic generation, even though we're probably too young to be.

    I think Andy was clingy to his toys because they *were* his young life. We don't know how long after the 2nd movie that Andy continued to play with them. From what it looked like, Andy didn't have many toys/video games to play with (these being his only toys) so I can definitely see why Andy loved them so.

    Critic...DUDE.
    Andy behaves that way at the end for the LITTLE GIRL...NOT himself.
    It's his way of parting with his childhood friends, his toys, yes...but he is going on about each one for the GIRL. Watch her reactions, her interactions with Andy, and said toys.
    THAT'S where the sweetness, the heart plays so perfectly.
    Andy sees HIMSELF in HER, and it's a tough moment for him.
    Plus, come on...not EVERYONE was as attached to their toys as Andy was...he sort of gets a pass on this due to this fact, and we LOVE him because of it...NOT in spite of it.

    • @dannyjorde2677

To say they "manipulate" you to cry is pretty stupid because even the rest of the film is well crafted with how it slowly reveals that the guard is not that safe and might even be dangerous. And, Buzz transition was absolutely hilarious. Sure, I will Latzu's backstory doesn't really connect with how he wanted to take over the guard, but to say someone is evil because it created a well crafted film with a well crafted ending is kinda dumb.

    • @SamuelJamez17
      @SamuelJamez17 8 лет назад +2

      +Jason Scibby they were. but he is in college now. he HAS to grow up sometime. plus, we are living in the digital age now. toys are barely being used or played with anymore (except when it comes to video games like Disney Infinity and Skylanders which will probably make toys popular again, plus Lego is still alive, since there is heavy marketing on its LEGO based video games and a very good movie).
      but, i admit ... i hated when i felt that i had to say goodbye to my childhood. and this was a movie that was made for those who grew up with the series, not actually for kids. now wonder there was a MUCH darker tone on the film (even though it kinda felt out of place for a Toy Story film, plus i did sympathise with Lotso). but ... yeeah

      plus, ‘toys’ are still in the market, just not played with.
      Many people still use ‘toys’, like Warhammer and its boardgames are still being played.
      Action figures are still beign manufactured and collected
      (some people still don’t even open the package just to make it look neat).
      Many people still buy action figures of favourite genres just for collection, even toys that are very old and just buy them for collections.
      So, toys … some of them are still being played, some.
      But mostly, the toy business has shifted more into collections and action figures, like square enix does.
      Which is do admit, they look pretty badass.

    Which is pretty impressive considering that it never felt like the _Toy Story_ Trilogy was ever _meant_ to be a trilogy. Each movie had its own story & conflict and always ended things neatly. And yet, the Trilogy is probably one of the Best Trilogies in movie history. That's impressive.

The lighting, the music, the character expression, there isn't any dialogue, and you watch, as they except their fate together. I thought it was very well done.

    as a college kid I can say I would be like this. especially since I love kids. I would play with a kid at that level because I would want her to be excited about these toys. Andy is just really great with kids. that's what I see.

  • @KensouX
    @KensouX 8 лет назад +16

    I don't think the emotional tugging part of the ending isn't Andy letting go of his toys, it's Woody saying goodbye to his buddy. Andy is grown and will move on from toys, that's just a part of life, but Woody will always be a toy and has to finally say goodbye to his buddy of 10+ years. I figured everyone was looking at it from Woody's perspective since he's been the emotional center of the films, not Andy. Even writing this is making me... nope.... no... just... something in my eye.

    I think thin the reason why he was being so childish and descriptive about the toys in the end was because he was talking to a little kid! Don't you ever see anyone dumb down or put on a "kids voice" when speaking to children? I'm sure Andy was doing that, honestly didn't come across as THAT weird.

    Toy story 3 is absolutely my favorite film from pixar... because it is funny, it is emotional, it is dark.
    Lotso is not only interesting but made even more interesting when we get to his backstory.
    It plays with our childhood nostlagia and everybody who grew up watching the toy story films understands why the ending is so powerful. Because we've all been there. We grew up and stopped playing with our toys and eventually forgot about them and said goodbye to them. Its just such a powerful message about growing up and moving on. I love this movie to death and its my 2nd favorite film of all time for a reason

  • @DragonxFlutter
    @DragonxFlutter 7 лет назад +7

    Looking back on Toy Story 3, I kinda connect with the ending. I've always been able to somewhat connect with people younger or older than me a lot easier than with my direct peers. And, if I was Andy in this situation, this is probably how I'd give my childhood one last hurrah while passing down my old toys to someone that could appreciate them more.
    Andy's playing with the little girl while remembering the good times he had. Getting one last chance to be that innocent young kid we saw glimpses of in the first movie. And considering that I was 17 at the time, just behind Andy going to college, I honestly wanted that to be me when passing toys I've cherished down to someone.
    Personally, though, I'd have kept them in the family. As a way to bond with my children, and for them to bond with their children, and so forth. Like Woody is supposedly passed down to Andy from his dad. But the ended was nice. A good send-off to the original characters with just enough room left open for spin-off shorts and other such non-canon things.

I wasn't allowed to watch the first 2 growing up (even though I saw bits and pieces of them at school) but my high school Spanish teacher showed us this one in class (in which we had plenty of time to watch the whole movie). I loved it! Now, I just need to watch the other two all the way through.

  • @jihef03

    Doug, I think I know why you don't like this one as much as the others. It has everything to do with that word :"*again*."
    Toy Story 3 isn't a bad movie by any means, but it clearly takes too much elements of previous Pixar movie to be original.
    *Again*, Woody tries to reconnect with his group.
    *Again*, because he's not believed by them. Which in the first movie, is understandable, but in the third one, it's plain silly. Why would Woody lie to them? Why would they not believe? Is it because they don't want to stay at Andy's anyway? I say it's pretty convenient that Sunnyside ended being a shitty place, and apparently Mrs Potato Head is more trustable than their leader....
    *Again* we have an old looking toy walking with a can that thinks that children don't like toys. They even play the "_seemelingly nice but actually a bad guy_" vilain trope, which was already done to death already in previous Pixar movie. Nothing surprising here.
    *Again* Buzz is rebooted to think he's not a toy. This just implies that the writers don't know what to do with his character anymore.
    *Again* ,it's about going back to Andy's for 3/4 of the movie. Even with the fact that Andy has grown up now, and that could just has given the toys away already before the movie begins, if the writers had wanted to!
    As for the ending, while it can be emotional, eventually nothing really changes. Woody is still there, Buzz is still there, Jessie is still there...The most popular characters of the franchise are still alive and together, they haven't learned that much ,and they just changed of owner. I have never connected that much with Andy, so it didn't feel like much of a loss. Honestly, the fact they're making a fourth movie has always been a strong possibility.
    All and all, while Toy Story 2 took the franchise to another level, Toy Story 3 feels like Pixar was resting a bit on his laurels for this one. I also suspect the higher-ups at Disney giving some directives that could ensure they'd still be able to milk some money of the franchise even after this one. This doesn't make Toy Story 3 a bad movie, but to me, it still isn't as good as the two others, and a good handful of other Pixar movies. If I were to rate it, I'd give it a 6.5/10, or maybe 7/10. Not bad, but not amazing either.

    I actually think those points about the ending are pretty fair. Given the toys to Bonnie was a great idea. Maybe him presenting the toys to her playfully would have been acceptable. But he spent the afternoon playing with her and the toys. That's just gratuitous. No college-age guy is going to detour his trip to college and spend the afternoon playing with toys, it's beyond unrealistic.
    The overall was very enjoyable though.

      The ending works the same way the end of 1 works: sure, it's unrealistic (arguably; some college kids, myself included, would be this sentimental), but it taps into the Pixar Magic. I don't care if it's unrealistic or not; it's beyond logic. It touches base human emotion, and reverts you back to a child for a split second.

Oh, I mean to introduce the magic of Disneyland to our lovable little audiences! And, somehow, you are gonna get stuck with the Live Action Version of Pinocchio. Maybe in that way the audiences will end up liking the Live Action Disney Remakes a little more!
      Tom: Let me ask you... Don't you have _any_ original ideas?
      Tim: Yeah... I mean... We have a ton of other Toy Story characters to focus on... Like for an example... Jessie, or the Potato Heads... Can't we focus on them for once...?

This time you are _not_ going to voice a Buzz with amnesia, going back to the base start as a Space Ranger, an army of Buzz Toys or Evil Buzz! The villain for this picture is gonna be... Warp Darkmatter from the ancient Buzz Lightyear show!!!
      Bob very quickly to prevent Tim's complaint: And Anakin Skywalker himself, Hayden Christensen, is more than happy to voice that role! I already dream the 1 billion dollars that are gonna gain from that casting choice!!
      Upon hearing that both Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are still for a while and they burst into an uncontrollable laugh.
      Tom: You naive fools... Hayden is *not* coming!!!
      Both Director and Bob together: *Wait, what?!*
      Tim: Don't you know? People were not happy that he did not voice Shadow on Sonic The Headehog 3! So, for the 6th movie they literally created a whole new hedgehog sidekick character for Shadow and Christensen is gonna voice him! Basically, the 6th Sonic movie is gonna have 2 Shadows!!!

    I saw this movie just before going out to my freshman year of college. I was literally the same age as Andy. And I related 100% to everything Andy went through. Maybe college students in the 90s and other pre 2000s era were different, but growing up with the internet, nostalgia comes alot sooner, hence the "90's kid" theme that went around for awhile.

    Toy Story 1 is a film about the present- it's all about accepting your station in life and learning to make of the most of it, even if it doesn't seem all that impressive. Toy Story 2 is a film about the future- it's all about accepting that your station is eventually going to change, whether you like it or not, and learning that this does not diminish your joy in the here and now, but instead makes it more precious. Toy Story 3 is a film about the past- or more specifically, it's a film about letting go of the past, accepting that the inevitable HAS happened, and figuring out where to go from there. These are some of the most important lessons for both kids and adults.

    I thought it was okay. Honestly, I think I'll always prefer the first one. The ending was decent enough, but, I didn't feel particularly moved by it. I remember the fun I had playing with my toys as a child--but, I kinda moved past it. Video games, though...the games with which I grew-up...instant feels.

    I LOVE THIS FILM SO-O-O MU-U-UCH!!! I remember when I first saw this film in the theaters and even with all that hype I had to see this film, this film exceeded my expectation. And that’s saying a lot because I was p**sing my pants throughout the wait, especially after seeing the 3D re-release of the first two films. I love the concept, I love the characters, I love the comedy, I love the ending, and I love the atmosphere. Easily my favorite film in the anthology. Yes, more than the second one. It’s that flawless…

    Oh, and by the way, I NEVER gave away my toys... And I don't think I went through the same adolescence as Doug went through. I think i was stuck as a kid in an ever-growing body to the point where I finally became an adult an no one cared that I acted like a kid.

    I've always been like that around little kids especially when they're shy.. if you give a toy a story when you give it to a kid it makes the toy that much more special for the kid.. Andy isn't weird he just knows how to talk to kids

  • @MasterDK913
    @MasterDK913 7 лет назад +3

    Even though the ending was heart-wrenching, I can definitely see your point. Andy is way too over the top when it comes to giving his toys away. Hell I had such an attachment to my box of toys as a kid but when it came time to give them to my nephew, I was just like 'Fuck it. Here you go" Did I miss them? Sometimes. Like I thought about the good times I had with them, but at the same time I'm like "It's not like I'd have use for them now so big deal. Besides, I know they're going to someone I care about so I know they'll be taken care of. Everything is just fine"
    However, on the other hand, I can see why Andy WOULD act this way. True, your typical teen would not go over the top and corny like this. But when it comes to little kids, you kind of have to. I mean yeah the backstories and "how to play with them" part was really annoying because you can;t just tell a kid how to play with a toy you're giving them. Kind of a dick thing to do honestly xD I mean Bonnie CLEARLY had a different idea for playing with Woody. But Andy might just be great with little kids. I mean he has a little sister and he probably had to keep her entertained a lot while she grew up and therefore had to develop child care and interaction skills. Hell he might even be going into a career that involves children. Maybe he'll end up actually MAKING toys for children to play with or he might start a daycare center of some kind.
    So yeah Andy is a bit too attached to his toys and should have just given them to Bonnie, told her to take care of them, and then left. But playing with her was honestly a very cute scene. They could have done without Andy getting too into it like with him doing the same piggy back ride with Woody that he did as a kid (which kind of made me shake my head a bit) but the scene does show how great Andy is with kids and shows how great he would be in the future and hell, how great of a father he would be to his own kids. And sure while he'll be seen as strange by his colleagues for having a certain personality, I'm sure he'll grow close to a lot of the females so...there's that XD But yeah I see some of your points there but others I think you might have overlooked. Not saying it's bad, but just thought I'd give my views on it.

    Well, I cried at the end, because when it came out, I was Andy's age, and I was crazy nostalgic, but mainly because I was afraid of the future. Going off to college was scary for me. That's why I cried...and I think that's why a lot of others did too.

    I grew up with toy story, even had toy story toys, this movie made my eyes cry out. But I just thing the third one is the worst. If most of the toy story fans are either teens, or small children, the dark atmosphere didn't help at all. The teens want to forget the past, and move on, and the kids want to stay in the present. This movie made kids scared to grow up, and teens sad that they did. I loved the toy story movies simply because they were funny, original, lighthearted, but emotional, and funny. This just went too far out for me.

    I think Doug's completely wrong about the ending. Regardless of what he went through, the crisis that college-age people experience of having to let go of their childhood is very real, and very emotional. I couldn't relate to the exact situation, but I could definitely relate to how he was feeling. Cried like a little bitch.

      I disagree with him heavily. It is true that 3 copies the themes of 2, that's what a sequel is suppose to do: to explore more heavily ideas set up in the previous film. 2 was about coming to accept that the future is going to happen and you can't predict it. 3 is about dealing with that, with the nostalgia, and facing regrets.

      *****
      Example in a film and sequel people call good:
      themes in Batman Begins: escalation, fear as a motivator, choosing to act.
      themes in Dark Knight: escalation (explored this time), fear as a "motivator" (i.e, terror), consequences of acting.

    I really liked this film but Lotso turning out to be the villain was something I felt bothered about since I saw it because I came into it not really suspecting who the villain was going to be until it showed it. Even when Woody and the others were about to be tossed down the chute and slipping into the furnace, it subverted my expectations yet again when I thought he was going to save them. His backstory still helped why he was like that to begin with but he never redeemed him which was the problem.

    Trying not to sound "hater"-ish: From about the 4:00 mark on it seems like you're interpreting Andy's giving away of his toys as something bad. I think he was more trying to be overly-enthusiastic for the sake of the little child receiving the toys...Like a lot of people are with kids. They get over-enthusiastic about everything to make mundane crap seem amazing. It's dweeby to act like that in front of adults, but it's kind of expected in front of children. That's the "magic of childhood" - being blind to the cynical view of the world. No offense, but that seems like something that a confessed "Secret of NIMH" fan is a bit hypocritical in harping on.
