- Union Pacific Railroad Acquires Big Boy Locomotive No. 4014 Plans to Restore One of the Largest Steam Locomotives Ever Built Omaha, Neb., July 23, 2013 -- Union Pacific Railroad today announced it reached an agreement with the Southern California Chapter - Railway & Locomotive Historical Society in Pomona, Calif., to transfer ownership of one of the world's largest steam locomotives, Big Boy No. 4014, back to Union Pacific and relocate No. 4014 to Cheyenne, Wyo., where Union Pacific's Heritage Fleet Operations team will work to restore it to operating condition. Details regarding those efforts will be made public at a later date. Union Pacific donated No. 4014 to the historical society December 7, 1961. The locomotive arrived January 8, 1962, at its current display location at the Rail Giants Train Museum in Pomona. No other railroad has retained its historical equipment or honored its American roots like Union Pacific. "Our steam locomotive program is a source of great pride to Union Pacific employees past and present," said Ed Dickens, senior manager - Union Pacific Heritage Operations. "We are very excited about the opportunity to bring history to life by restoring No. 4014."

Union Pacific Railroad is undertaking the movement and restoration of one of the world's largest steam locomotives -- the Big Boy No. 4014. Twenty-five Big Boys were built exclusively for Union Pacific Railroad, the first of which was delivered in 1941. The locomotives were 132 feet long and weighed 1.2 million pounds. Because of their great length, the frames of the Big Boys were "hinged," or articulated, to allow them to negotiate curves. They had a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement, which meant they had four wheels on the leading set of "pilot" wheels which guided the engine, eight drivers, another set of eight drivers, and four wheels following which supported the rear of the locomotive. The massive engines normally operated between Ogden, Utah, and Cheyenne, Wyo.Eight of the Big Boys were donated for public display in various cities around the country. They can be found in Pomona, Calif.; St. Louis, Mo.; Dallas, Texas; Omaha, Neb.; Denver, Colo.; Scranton, Penn.; Green Bay, Wis.; and Cheyenne, Wyo.Big Boy No. 4014 was delivered to Union Pacific in December 1941. The locomotive was retired in December 1961, having traveled 1,031,205 miles in its 20 years in service.No. 4014 will be moved from its display location in Pomona, Calif., to Cheyenne, Wyo., where it will undergo restoration that is anticipated to take three to five years.
Ive waited through all of my life, especially through my childhood to hear news of a bigboy, running the rails again! This is totally awesome!!!
4014 is at Colton Yard and spring, will make the trip to Wyoming for restoration. Awesome move and UP made it a great media event, not only for local news, but rail fans too.
This is a really good video, I love how through out the whole video the locomotive is kept in frame, very nice job filming/
Last Saturday was the steam-tacular icing on the cake for action this summer, and this news has completed the dreams of even the most suttle of railfans. Great video Skip, and you'll know Dad and I to be trackside once #4014 rumbles again! Keep it steamin'.
Amazing old school steamer's rocking the rail's once again.
oh my god that's gorgeous.
Ive seen 4014 before in the shops and they are making good progress
love
Master piece of engineering.
I'm a train nut! Always was always will be. In regards to your comment, I have a 1938 Singer industrial sewing machine. As they say, they don't make things like they used to! The UP had many awesome steam engines, including Challengers and Big Boys!
God damn that's a beautiful train
Can you watch your language
@Rocky Fanatic 68 but it is!
Jeremiah Miller I wasn’t asking youb
@Rocky Fanatic 68 what’s youb?
Jeremiah Miller excuse me don’t say that
I've seen her run the Columbia River Gorge a few times and it's really something special! Thanks for sharing! ;)
Anyone who watches this and doesn't get a lump in their throat, well........
Good way to describe the feeling.
ROCKSTARCRANE - Or a lump in their pants...
Loud and Proud!! That's true American muscle! no parts made in china on 844!
Minecraft man I beg to differ. the Mallard might hold the worlds speed record... so what. It's a Pacific type steam locomotive and when she did set the record it ONLY pulled six cars and was going down hill. American steam locomotives can pull more cars go longer distances with minimal maintenance. The reason why locomotives like 844 or J-611 did not set any speed records is because of safety. J611 and 844 are capable of breaking mallards speed record! lets go by the numbers, 844 and 611 are what's called super power steam locomotives. equipped with super heaters larger fire boxes. both engines have 5000 hp at the draw bar. 611 produces 80000lbs pounds of tractive effort 844 produces appx. 64000 lbs of tractive effort. both can travel triple digits speeds. both are capable of exceeding the Mallard record. the Mallard may be more graceful but 844 and 611 are more advanced designs. both engines can pull more cars over steeper grades.
Minecraft man. true but WE perfected them!
+minecraft man go eat a crumpet, and drink some tea and do some reasearch on american steam locomotives before you write another stupid comment.

explain how British steam locomotive are better? Any of the running 4-8-4 steam locomotives in service can out run a mallard. Especially an NW J class. Most modern British steamers produce 36,000lbs of tractive effort. with this UP 844 produces 64,000lbs of tractive effort. The NW J 611 has 84,000lbs of tractive effort. Both 844 and 611 have traveled at triple digit speeds. NW J class locomotives were rumored to have top speeds of 142mph but never documented. Not to mention UP is restoring the largest steam locomotive ever built! So yes you Brits may have invented them But we Americans build them better!
Beautiful machine. Look at those drivers dance. Such a magnificent piece of engineering.
Excellent quality video, nice and steady at such a speed, well done. What a great subject!!
Watching that engine run is poetry in motion!! What remarkable feats of engineering they are. Long live all of the steam engines. It literally brought tears to my eyes.
How fast were you going to keep up with 844?
Great country= great distances = long trains= mighty engines!! Very nice to see these beautiful pieces of engineering still alive and kicking thanks to those steam lovers.
This train looks so majestic in motion, to see the drivers working, to hear it chugging along, and the smoke puffing from the stack, with a whistle that sounds distinct from any airhorn, the Diesels may be more modern and more powerful, but when it comes to the awe factor they just can't compare.
Man, it was gorgeous watching Bigboy in Gering Nebraska and remember the days!
Great and very clear video of a great locomotive, and interesting news. As a Brit, I haven't been in the US for years, but when 4014 is operational as well as 844, maybe that will be time for a trip.
And if you look closely, every piece of that thing has three very important words stamped on it.
MADE IN AMERICA
I have a photo of this Locomotive with my late Brother In Law William Bill Riley Sr at the helm of 8444!
Golden Spike Museum in Bailey Yard North Platte Nebraska is a great place to see alot more of Railroad History!
Great shots
irelandbloke has
irelandbloke woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
I needed that,thanks
Jon
I for one cant wait to this beast of a locomotive back in steam, UP should be commended in such a bold venture, I and a lot of folk in the UK wish them the very best of luck!! Good job fella's.
Awesome big boy 4014 whistle!!!!!!!🚂👍🏻👌🏻
Rolling railroad thunder! Amazing filming, thanks
That's news is unreal, bravo UP. I can't belive how well they keep 844, she looks new in every vid. Great pace shots
Loved the Pomona big boy train at pomona, calif historic railroad exhibit at pomona fairplex had made my videos of train blowing whistle sitting in engineers seat and imagining the awesome power and work behind this union pacific masterpiece and glad that it is being restored.would be nice if it could make occasional round trips from Pomona fair if possible in the future.awesome piece of American history heritage.
Every time I hear a Union Pacific steamer whistling as it flies through the countryside, Great Big Rolling Railroad plays in the back of my mind
Holy god, I can't believe it's finally happening, there'll be a Big Boy in active service.
I came.
Majestic and Graceful and Powerful......wow
Huh...I guess I heard wrong. I thought UP was gonna restore no. 4019? Oh well, I'd LOVE to see a UP Big Boy back in commission! Its my fav steam loco model by far :) long live the mallet-type! Awesome video dude!
Up 844 está soprando o apito present-day igual a voz do meu vovô Alfredo
0:03 Hahaha that's a Pontiac firebird
lol
your right LOL
Oscar Tob
Lol, I read the text and went back to see what model it is was and was greeted by a 2002 Pontiac grand prix.
Wow. Someone besides me noticed that too
Does it amaze anybody else to watch the axel and wonder how on earth it doesn't just fly off. That's a lot of steel moving very fast and quite literally thumping the hell out of the drive wheels and track!
I assume there's high quality alloy bearings. And the chemistry of the lubricants now used on these engines are FAR superior to what was used originally. Modern advances in metallurgy, modern lube chemistry, should really give these great restored engines outstanding reliable performance!
Another cool feature about these restored engines...-They would be unaffected by natural or man-made EMP events. Unfortunately, communications, switches and signal equipment probably would be.
These steam locos are absolutely amazing
Beautiful yr literally Beautiful video , Its a Honor to see These liners working. 😍
Guys try this!!
Try putting on one of your favorite awesome songs on in another tab, lower the volume on this video, max the volume on the song, and combine them too make one hell of a good music video with #844 racing along
I personally recommend Kongo's Come with me Now, or America F*** Yea song (which is perfectly timed if played at the same time), or any other rock and roll.
Great video by the way StemaUP!!!
the font sucks...the colors suck.. can't read anything without getting within 8 inches of the screen... sucks...
uh..Sorry? Actually try listening to Sons of War for Two steps from hell...way better. Like way better.
What a piece of steam engineering...,at its most impressive.Wow!That's a lot of horsepower there...,talk about yer
"Heavy Metal!"
*ba dum tsh!!* haha nice one. XD
The camera person did a fantastic job pacing 844!!!!
So glad the UP is dedicated to keeping history alive.
......and to think, the first loco on rails was in little ol' Wales, the home of all industry, railways, slate, and narrow gauge. Where I live. Thanks for that posting, really enjoyed.
No, the first stem powered loco was in Wales, near Merthyr, The Darlington/Stockton was the first passenger railway.
flatroofer gonna have to burst your bubble here. The first steam locomotive was called the coalbrookdale locomotive and was built and ran in coalbrookdale. Its actually the second version called "pen-y-darren" that ran in whales. Its not a well known fact though, so its fine that you didn't know. I'm glad you know about the pen-y-darren though. Not enough do
***** Sorry, I beg to differ, the first loco was built and run by Mr Trevithik, a Cornish who came to Wales. It was short lived though because it broke the rails and it was left to the Stevenson family from the North East to really develop the concept with great success.
flatroofer yes, it was built by trevithik, but you are thinking of the pen y darren which was the second one he built. The first one was called the coalbrookdale locomotive. the one that broke the rails was the second one called the pen-y-darren. The first one worked quite well but suffered power problems that why he went bigger.
here, have a look - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Trevithick
WOW, that would be so COOL to see in person!
Hello. Wonderful to see. And the Extra 10,000 h.p. behind the tenders is quite an Impressive sight! BullyBilly
Que linda máquina! Emocionante ver uma Big Boy!
i have always had a interest in trains and by far this is my favorite
Look closely Sven T Viking there sure is smoke and steam coming from the 844, she is just burning right and moving effortlessly.
Not a red Corvette. That's a Firebird.
Holy crap finally!!! Big Boy will rule the rails once more!!
Gf:come to my house.
Bf:can't I'm driving a train
Gf:I'm home alone
Superb capture!
Awesome, very well done!
Can't wait to see them team up!
Such a beautiful train I luv it
For lovers of steam seeing something like this is really undescribable, just look at the ease that locomotive moves down the track. It is no easy task in this day and age to operate steam locomotives, hats off to the UP and the men and women responsible for the UP steam program.
Did they take the challenger out of service? i thought it was still running as well.
Love to see them run!
I agree, what do you think about a new grey paint job?
Its alive its a living breathing beast. Very nice video.
Wonderful steam locomotive.
Nice video &,i own a 1981 z28 so im an fbody freak
Can wait till 4014 rides the rails again :)
A thing of total beauty.......
Super Video dude.
in the beginning u can see my red firebird....love this train chased it ever since I was 6
Beauty in motion!
In the late 1950's - early 1960's, most RR's around the world couldn't cut up their steam engine fleet for scrap fast enough. A BIG thank you goes out to all of the people who thought these engines were worth saving and were their custodians until they could run again.
Amazing to see one of these beauties on the track and moving, even if its being pushed.
If you look close you can see the driver rod is cut which they have to do or it acts as a compresser.
This is an old comment I know, but 844 isn’t being pushed, it’s under its own power.
That has one very clean exhaust.
It is very strange seeing a steam locomotive running with so little visual drama, but I wish we could drive along next to them like that in the UK.
Beautiful video job.
& I thought it was a corvette you went by so fast!
I can't wait for them to get a big boy train. I have loved these big trains since I was a kid. I will take my family out to see it one their done restoring it. Even both of my little girls get super excited to see steam trains. Ok any train.
fantastic vid
The Challenger is undergoing an overhaul I believe. Although with the acquisition of the 4014 Big Boy, the overhaul efforts have been put on the back burner. Would be kind of cool to see both trains roll out of the roundhouse together.
A thing of beauty, just listen to her roar..... She's alive.......
this is Very cool
Always wondered how they run her stack so clean heck even the whistles steam is clean.
not sure, but I think that might be an FEF-3, if so, it is an oil burner, and thus you would see very little smoke. if you look very closely, you can see a little smoke. the FEF-3 burner system works a lot like the oil furnace you have in your basement, do you see a lot of smoke coming out of your chimney/flue pipe when it is running? probably not.
with the cost of fuel it maybe cheaper to restore these old ones and put them back on the tracks then paying to power diesel ones.
BLISSFUL FAPPER except the 844 burns oil too.
Steam is 6-10% efficient. Diesels are 30-40% efficient so......the French did make a steam loco almost 15% efficient but the railroads use diesels for a reason...
Wasn't the Allegheny the only steam engine with 7k horsepower or more?
happy to see the big boy is comeing back cant want to see it
Up 844 blows her whistle from up big boy 4014 whistle 2013-2014
Awesome loco; gotta see it!
That is wonderful news!! I've seen one of the Big Boys (#4012 at Steamtown) up close, but I never thought I'd be able to see one running again. An interesting point to ponder: Since most locomotives are referred to in the female designation ("She", "Her"), I wonder if that would make #844 the "Little Sister" of Big Boy #4014.
Awesome & beautiful
the steamer doesn't have a generator, so they use a diesel to provide electricity to the passenger cars, this practice is quite common on railroads that don't use dedicated generator cars.
Wow some great chasing scenes!
BEATIFUL VIDEO.
At the beginning that car was a firebird, not a corvette.
Hmmm... I wonder if #844 can take the steam speed record from the A4 4468 Mallard. I bet she can :-)
Can't wait to see 3958 and 4014 double head a long distance frieght! From the California coast to as far as she can come east!!!! Great news! Now if NS can get that Y6a moving we'll all be happy!
That would be a perfect train for Mad Max movies!!
One of the QUEENS OF STEAM
how much did it weigh. I also looked at a picture and it was a 6-4-4-6 not as much as a big boy. also the big boy had 300 psi boiler pressure and 6000 hp
That was VERY COOL.
Is the 844 missing its mars light?
+stevelerro they took it off before it'd fall off due to rust
I think they took it off
Some serious hardware going on!
beautiful!
thank god UP is going to do this as it will be a massive amount of money and man hours to restore . it will be a source of pride for america , back when we meant what we said and the world new it !
Looks like nostalgia by being pushed but the whistle is awesome.
+rdillon517 it isn't being pushed, USRA regualtions require a diesel back-up, and it also assists with braking.
Well done video! No wind noise at such speed!
Well paced and framed!
Wish that it was pulling a freight train so cylinder noise could be heard from the greater load.
What an unfortunate whistle. Why not multi-chime whistles like other railroads?
I recall being unimpressed by the volume (loudness) of the whistle. Not as loud as Diesel locomotive horns. For non signaled grade crossings, I would have blown the whistle starting earlier.
