Pinnacle of American ingenuity! The Big Boy can pull at least the same as 4 diesels and do the same job with class. It looks and sounds alive; how could you not love it! Bless the 4014!
I grew up north of Denver and remember back in the 70s seeing these flamboyant black steam trains heading north to Cheyenne. They were so interesting looking compared to modern engines. I say flamboyant because of those giant wheels.
My son and I saw the Big Boyi off highway 85 in Colorado 4 years ago. I have been following the Big Boy ever since . It gives me a sense of American pride!
Absolutely a truly incredible video to see the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 alive and well is truly amazing and also learning the history of 844 who has never been out of service since the day she was built is another incredible piece of History thanks to everybody who had something to do with the rebuilding and the creation of this video thank you very much from the bottom of my heart incredible video footage❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Absolutely magnificent! This was so awesome that Union Pacific did this. The amount of money spent was enormous so I wanna thank a great American company for all they do!
I got to see 4014 myself just months after this filmed. Sure was a great day. Even got to talk with Ed Dickens who answered my question on 844 and signed my 4014 hat.
@@peterkane192 hasn't seen use since this footage from filmed, but I've heard rumors they'll bring her back in the future, though when that'll be is unknown as ed dickens said at an event this year they hope to bring her back in a year or 2.
I climbed up into the cab when 4014 was on static display at the Rail Giants museum in Pomona, California. Never thought I'd see the Big Boy ever steam again. Good on Union Pacific and good on Ed Dickens and crew!
It does have that "Tracks Ahead" type vibe to it. For anybody unfamiliar with the series Tracks Ahead, it was a show that used to air on PBS on Sundays at around 10:00am and was around for quite a while. It's unfortunate that it was taken off the air about 5 years ago, at least at the time I'm typing this comment.
Absolutely it’s a dated style of video production. Has a real 1980s and 1990s feel. Even the added in music. This could have been a Challenger video from Pentrex or Video Rails. It was a time of very inappropriate music added to train videos too. Music should really be steam appropriate which gives you two genres to choose from Big band from the decade to loco is from or old country like from Sun Records 1950s tunes

I agree what a waste of good time,,to record the biggest steaming pile of S---, like a rolling scrap pile,,that,, should blow its own boiler,,now that would be an awesome film,,of course no crew on it,or near it ,,for injury but it was worthless when it hit the rails day one,,& after it blows up it will finally make papers,,& be useful to finally get melted down for any other thing,,

I love the Union Pacific Big Boys, when I first saw the Big Boy No. 4014 he is the bestest and coolest Locomotive in the world! Long live the Last of the Giants!
Union Pacific 4014 is a great interesting locomotive that he draws crowds where every the true king of the railroad he is a majestic beast and he is capable of pulling a 650 car freight train and he is one of the most famous locomotives ever invented by man
I was thee when 4014 blew its wistle for the first time in how long its been inactive I honestly forgot but it was hype and people around me including me were exited
And what makes this video even more awesome is Union pacific 119 and Central Pacific Jupiter making an appearance as the 19th century transcontinental railroad.
Saw this Big Boy every year at the Los Angeles County Fair, we always got up inside the cab and marveled at how big the thing was!! Kids loved it!! Very happy they brought it back to life, these Big Boys were my late Grandfather’s favorite trains!! He would have loved to see this!!
Got to see 4014 3 times since his restoration. The third time though had to have been my favorite, because when the Big Boy came to Denver Union Station in 2022, a late running California Zephyr arrived next to the big boy at Denver, giving me the opportunity to see a steam powered train, a diesel powered train, and electric powered train(s) all in one setting.
Tony Hilton. Wash your mouth out. Thousands care. I am an 85 yo Australian who has seen the big steam, in the UK, South Africa, Europe, and Australia. It always moves me and those that I was with. Grow up, kid.
I knew they were BIG, but you can't feel it till you see it for real. First time I saw it, I felt it first. The ground was shaking as soon as it pulled out of the station in Cheyenne. I was down near the C&S overpass. Just chills and goose bumps when Ed let go on the whistle for the upcoming crossing.
Simply stunning. I can’t get over how utterly cool and yet hauntingly beautiful Big Boy’s steam horn sounds ! - Like just imagine it’s 1943 and you’re in Chicago area or something and troops and citizens are moving about hearing those steam locomotives 🚂 doing the business of the nation !

@24:01 I got stuck in wamsutter in summer 2020 for a week when my chain snapped on the vintage motorcycle I was going across the country on. it's truly a tiny town. I had to sleep in the parking lot of the love's truck stop next to my bike because there's no motel.
Beautiful video of their Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 (Built by American Locomotive Company in 1941) steaming for excursion service for the first time in 2019, along with UP 844 from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Ogden, Utah and then back.
Big Boy is a legend everyone railfan chants this locomotive's name. It is amazing to see the first excursion pulled by Big Boy on the 150th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike.
All I can say is "Beautiful to watch going down the tracks!!! I wish they would use these more to pull old passenger rail cars, so the newer generation can understand our past! Love this video! Brings back memories growing up next to tracks during 60's-70's in Sumner Washington seeing these occasionally and the older diesel-electrics (I called them the old cyclopes style engines) which next to steam were my favorite. Quick story, my grandmother would go out and feed the engineers when they would be stopped along our property. We lived approximately 50-75ft from the track. Loved watching this video, thanks for bringing back some fond memories from my childhood!!!
I’ve always loved trains, especially the big and strong ones. Therefore, Big Boy is my favorite. Glad to see him restored and Choo Chooing today! He’s the king of the railroad.

Oh oh oh wow! I got cold chills everywhere every time the engineer blew the whistle especially the first time as it passed under the Front Range bridge and heading out! I'm getting into my 60's now and not in a position to travel like used too, It isn't very likely I'll ever get to see a Big Boy in person so experiencing it through your video has been amazing, I actually choked up a little from the sight and sounds, thank you so much!

The front truck and some connections were leaky during testing. Amazing how careful the team was inspecting and adjusting everything! It was like the UP never stopped maintaining Big Boys. For me its not just the Big Boy, but the whole team working without a break! They really made History!
I used to play on this train as a kid and climb in the tinder box I hope to one day take this train on a trip one day so I can experience it as more then just a static display it's my dream
