Glen Campbell Plays "The William Tell Overture" (acoustic)

- From September 1974 in New York's Central Park, Glen Campbell plays an acoustic version of "The William Tell Overture". In later years he always used an electric guitar for this. Sometime around 1974 Glen recorded an acoustic studio version of William Tell that sounds much like this, but it went unreleased for years until it was accidentally released on the 1997 Razor & Tie 2-CD set "The Glen Campbell Collection". I say accidentally because the track listing for the compilation lists the live 1977 version with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, but what you hear is the 1974 studio acoustic version.
I was there!!! I was 11 years old, my folks took me and my brother -- what a SHOW!!!
I am speechless. There are no words to describe what I just heard and saw.
The Lone Ranger rides again! I like this played on this acoustic guitar much better than when he plays it on the electric guitar. Absolutely awesome guitar playing. I can only imagine having that kind of talent.
Lone Ranger and the William Tell overture … yes please!
He played this on an electric twelve string as well.
This song always brings tears to my eyes. I was born in March 1959. This song brings me back to my very happy childhood and wonderful memories. I remember those I loved who were around back then but are now gone. I hope to see them again.
While he is playing amazingly he looks so relaxed and having fun.
Because he is ! He was such a virtuoso that he wasn't thinking about what he played and could just express himself freely.
He wasé having a ball
It's because he loves what he does. He was born to do this!
When you're as good as he was (RIP) it's like breathing.
@@tidefanyankee2428 He was a natural and was born to do what he did.
Now you see why he was one of the session guitarists in most demand. His playing is in thousands of tunes - not an exaggeration.
This is a particularly good point. One, because so many people do not know of his illustrious session man career, and just how much of those fabulous guitar riffs and solos we being played by Glen. And two, because he proved that there was hardly anything he couldn't play with total mastery. Stuff, anything, that was totally out of his genre, he'd play it fantastic.
That guitar was part of him, literally.

What an incredible talent, Glen Campbell!!!
Can we all just agree that Glen is the greatest of all time?
💯
Yes, indeed, there will never by anyone to touch him...
I certainly agree. He was great on the 12-string guitar also.
I would say he's certainly one of the all time greats. But without taking anything away from Glenn there are other guitar virtuosos that fit into that category just as well.
I think it's a bit like your favorite food too. I can't taste what chicken cacciatore tastes like in your mouth and you can't know what bacon wrapped char broiled steak tastes like it mine...🙃
Oh yeah... What was that other great guitarists name from that era... He was on the Grand Old Opry once in a while.. . Last name was Clark? Clarkson? He was right slick too.
Though I'm a bit younger and grew up with other names as guitar gods in different types of music, as a player I still can appreciate what great technicians these men were.
I grew up hearing Glen Campbell music. I had no idea he was a guitar player of this caliber. Wow.
I'm so happy people appreciate the astonishing music this man could make, thank you, Glen Campbell 💚
Anyone that gives this a thumbs down is a complete MORON and has absolutely no idea of the talent Glen Campbell had. I can never get over the clueless mentality it must take in the face of the talent Glen displayed here. Too bad they wouldn't display their names so everyone could appreciate their STUPIDITY.
The best guitarist I have ever seen in my 72 years!
Glen Campbell was straight on the mark. Did not miss a note. Awesome performance!!! Orchestra too.
Not only did he not miss a note but each note is weighted perfectly, precisely as loud as the one before it, staccato and even through every bar.
Of course it's harder to do this on an acoustic with the heavier gage strings that require more pressure than an electric or a classical strung with catgut.
He was absolutely tremendous, whatever he played, or sang. so sadly missed.
He makes it look so easy .....its not....i know the tune well he doesnt miss or slur a single note...he talks to the audience clowns around with the clarinet player....he WAS A MONSTER talent....May he always be at peace.....you are so missed Glenn
Now, I know why my father had such respect for Glenn and Roy's guitar picking.
Yes, Roy Clark was another great one.
Simply phenomenal.i'm I shock & always knew he was great but this is Stratospheric.
Just unfreekinbelievable. What a talent. I loved his singing even more. RIP Glen.........
I grew up with Glen's music but didn't really know just how talented he was until a few years ago. RIP. He was one of the greats.
One of the best guitarists in the world . We will miss you. Rip.
Yeah, if not the best. Right there with Roy Clark and Jerry Reed.
@Niel Thomas One in a million?
That 70's hair and pants are actually pretty awesome too.
Yep, no list of the greatest guitarists in history is complete if Glen Campbell and Roy Clark aren't on it.
I showed his electrical guitar performance for this piece of music to students! They were mesmerized!
He and Jerry Reed were a big part of the original shredders back in that day! RIP Sir you will be dearly missed.
Chris Chapman q
Indeed! Trudat!
True and without all the trumped up bs that is so many modern musical acts.
Roy Clark was also a great one!!…
Even Roy admitted GC was king
Reminds me of the famous Julie Andrews quote: "An amateur practices until they can get it right, but a professional practices until they can't go wrong."
@Doug Fernandes and their audience is often, "impaired".
Michael Jackson was the same - practised until you thought it was natural and easy. Far from it.
@@buggyboogle9 I remember watching The Jackson 5 on TV when I was a kid, I think Michael wasn't even a teenager yet but he was out front.....the best singer, the best dancer, brightest smile.....a star in the making at that age, you could see it plain as day.
I love his version of this song as a kid. I believe, to this day, Glenn and Roy are the best pickers in the entire world.
The only debate I have for the best would be between the two. They were so amazing and so underated.
@@strategygaming5830 Agreed. You'll hear the names Hendrix, Paige and Clapton, but Clark and Campbell are as good or even better. They could play anything and play it perfectly.
@@strategygaming5830 The elite east and west coast snobs in the industry didn't like southerners, and were pissed off that nobody in their areas could even come close. Same with the press.
Glen Campbell was an amazing talent. I grew up watching his variety show and I was always transfixed with his incredible guitar performances. He will be sorely missed.
Totally agree I don't think he was ever fully recognized for how good he really was, this clip alone shows why I put him in the same class as Hendricks, Clapton, Brian May.
Actually you're wrong colts. You don't classify a studio musician with band members. A studio musician can play any style of music like classical to flamingo to jazz to rock and all the rest. Campbell could do it all with ease. I'm not saying those guys aren't good but they're even close. If I had to pick one to be the closest it would be Clapton.
Anyway, I also remember his show, and on his show when he did William Tell Overture, it was on a twelve string guitar. He played it at the same speed plus he played half of it over his head without missing a beat. Which makes it way more impressive since the duel strings are really close together and he was only picking one throughout the entire song.
@@coltsfan79 Hell they learned from him.
One legend introduces another. Both are sorely missed!
And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is how it's done!!!
Thank God people saw fit to record this at the time for posterity!
Holy smokes that was off the charts and he seemed to have fun doing it! Bravo!
A fine figure of a man loaded with talent and tapping his foot the whole time. Makes it look easy. Wow.
wow, this guy was so talented and one of my favorites of all time. A true legend on the guitar and such an entertainer. I miss him.
RIP Glen. 50 year player here still shakes his head when Glen plays.
I couldn't stop laughing, Glen's expressions....when he says "I love this part" or "too slow", or "faster" and you know he could play even faster because that is just how good he was. When he gets to bouncing up and down on his "horse"...OMG, this man is an American treasure and I keep him and his entire huge family in my prayers. My mom had such severe Alzheimer's at the time of her death that it was almost impossible for me to visit her yet her face lit up when she saw me so there was something there, just no words. Ashley is who I worry about the most because like me, she is the youngest.
I come from a family with Alzheimer's also. I am in the early stages of it. My grandmother, mother and brother had it. From what I have seen and experienced , it appears to be a genetic disorder. I send out my love to every family that experiences it.
@@charleskemp2037 I'm so sorry for you. I was sure that I was developing Alzheimer's, but my doctor says no, at least not yet. I'm having memory issues, mostly short term. I will forget what I'm talking about in the middle of a sentence, and it's so embarrassing. My prayers for your road ahead!!
I am so thankful to see these performances. They demonstrate that he was an unbelievable talent and that we can continue to appreciate his ability and joy.
Just Fantastic, I could listen to this over and over (and I do), thanks Glen
I was one of the first folks to own an Ovation guitar (it’s unnumbered), and at the time I didn’t understand why Ovation produced a Glen Campbell model, but now I see why. I was blind, but now I see.
Adored worldwide
Why couldn't my guitar ever do that..........He is so amazing and I don't think he got half the credit he deserved. He is one of the greatest and will be missed dearly by all of us.
That was as good a shred as anybody can do on a stringed instrument....an ovation accoustic with few if any effects through a clean amp...you almost have to play yourself to realize how great that was...this is the Glenn I remember from radio and tv from my days growing up in Greensburg Pa....He came to Greensburg on his farewell tour and while it was two miles from where I lived I couldn't go to see, because I wanted to remember him like this and not from the video clips I saw of his last performances...for me ,it was best not to go...
I LOVE how he kicks ass here, and he's trying to get the band to go faster. With his talent, I know he could do it.
A true genius. Thanks for the music Glenn.
I keep watching this but I still can't get over how incredible he is!
I am so very sorry he is gone. What a gifted and wonderful man.
Glenn was a talented genius . No one was better . I miss him .

The amazing one of a kind Glen Campbell!
Mind completely BLOWN! Glenn was awesomeness
Thank you Glen for all the wonderful music thru the years. R.I.P.
There is another You tube video of this song in which he plays part of the song with the guitar on the top of his head.
my god never knew he could play like this ,talk about a unknown guitar player man was he good !!
I was a little kid in the early 70s so didnt know till now how good he was
Excellent Glen, not many come close to you. Your legend live on.
Love that improvisation he added to make this Williams Tell Overture so outstanding.
Glen .As easy as breathing. Amazing.
Voice, song and guitar playing.Glen Campbell is a great artist!
Glenn Campbell one of the greatest guitarist
Absolutely fantastic never heard it played better anywhere
It’s very humbling when you think you are getting somewhere on guitar then you watch this. Lol! Goodness me Glenn Campbell’s virtuosity was amazing. A true talent. Glenn, Roy Clark, Jerry Reed, etc, were phenomenal.
So sad to hear this talented man has passed. Rest in peace Mr. Campbell
One of the best guitar players in the country.....he'll be missed...!
Doesn't get Better than this! Glen is Soooo Gifted!!!!! Much Love and Respect to a Wonderful Man😃💞
I still remember him playing this on Johnny Carson, re-tuning the guitar while he played. Fantastic...
Thank you for all the music and enjoyment! RIP...
Like he's sitting on the commode entertaining himself! Campbell is the world's best on the guitar.
In 1968 when I was a smart mouthed punk, one thing that my parents and I had common ground on was the fact that Glen Campbell was the boss!
Now THAT'S funny!
Remarkable, outstanding, incredible talent. Thank you.
That was awesome 👏 This guy was born to entertain 🙏
Truly one of the "Guitar gods"!
So talented, I always liked Glen!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ RIP my friend
Glen made it look easy with that grin on his face picking away!! Never seen it acoustic before but again it's Glen he could shred a student guitar for sale in a isle at Walmart!!
One of the greatest ever
Great guitarist. One of my all time favorites
Love those looks of sheer respect he gets from the orchestra!
Pure genius. RIP legend!
One of the all time greats!
I watched a video of Glen Campbell "shredding" flawlessly on a 12 string guitar. I promptly burned mine in the fireplace.
Legend
Another member of the wrecking crew said "Glen Campbell is the best guitarist I've ever heard" big fat period, that was Leon Russell!
Did you know eddie van halen begged for lessons from glen?
Bar none!
And Leon was no slouch on the guitar either (not to mention the piano)
Bravo Glen! We miss you dearly!
Well, I guess I'll just have to thank you again for posting this and say how much I love this performance, watching it over and over... thanks good buddy!
What an amazing talent!!
Wow, isn't that incredible amazing performance!!
I will never stop listening to him. He is so good on the guitar
This guy filled in for Brian Wilson during a Beach Boy's concert in Springfield Mass in 1965...he was largely unknown then, but trust and believe, it would not have come as a great surprise for lightening to come from the guitar he was playing..he was that good...
he was the guitarist on most of the famous Beach Boy albums - Pet Sounds etc
Brian Wilson preferred using session musicians than the actual band - which wasn't that unusual in the 60s. Recording was hugely expensive and complex back then, so they needed the best possible musicians. They couldn't afford people making mistakes.
A guy like Campbell (or Jimmy Page, who was also an in-demand session player before he was famous) could nail a track in 2-3 takes. Whereas The Beach Boys regular guitarist would have needed at least 7-8. So it saved record labels lots of money
Sweet Jesus ,he was so good !
Raw talent....awesome awesome awesome
What a hero! RIP Glen x
Glen Campbell has chops galore, as good as any Nashville hotshot (which he once was), but more important than that, he had great taste and played for the song. One of the greatest of all time. A favorite of the people and of guitarists too.
In addition to being a Nashville hotshot, Glen as also a member of the famed L.A. Wrecking Crew.
Imagine being lucky enough to see this.
not even breaking a sweat .. glenn campbell one of the best .
You are the Best not but awesome. My name is Addison and I am 9 years old. And my Aunt and I just listened to your rendition of the , William Tell Overature. God Bless You.
RIP Glen. A big fan.
That's amazing with an acoustic guitar! 😳
So easy to forget how damm good he was. A truly phenomenal guitar player yet he couldn't read a note of sheet music despite being a studio musician. RIP Mr. Campbell.
Maybe the greatest ever. What a musician WOW!
For voice, looks and musicianship, he’s got my vote.
Rest in peace, sir legend
