Is the BA XR6T Finally Running Right? Plus a look into it's Haltech brain!

  • This week we've got the BA Falcon back for an update.. it hasn't been on the channel for almost a year! Thankfully, there's a lot of good news here - through a lot of perseverance I've been able to singlehandedly get the car running right and all the gremlins ironed out of the tune. As mentioned this update is a bit nerdy and delves into some of the ECU functions, so apologies for anyone who ends up falling asleep. 😅#motoringbox

So I can’t even drive it legally yet 🤣 I don’t think I would have got all that done without you & the other people on this platforms videos and knowledge. Appreciate everything you do Sean!

    It's great to see tutorials regarding the technicalities of tuning. It'll pay itself off when you tinker with it yourself rather than spending $$$ for an external tuner. It's great to see Aussie products that are looking after Aussie cars

    Closed loop boost control - this is where you set a target boost pressure and the ECU will constantly try to hit that boost level. You can adjust multiple parameters around how fast and aggressive the control logic reacts (PID control). Set it up to react too aggressively and you will end up with it hunting, i.e. it will cycle between overshoot, undershoot, overshoot. You can also go too far the other way and have it too slow to react, causing it to overboost. Changing the turbo like you have will 100% change how this should be setup, but it couldn't have been tuned correctly before with the stock flapper anyway.
    The Base Duty Cycle numbers you changed are the starting point for the boost control. When the ECU decides it should be controlling boost, it will start with whats in that table and use the closed loop logic to adjust that number from there.
    If The Hoff is still willing to help out, it might be best getring his help with getting this tuned right, PID control is a pain to work with. I can give you a basic run down on what to do if you really want to have a crack

    One of the reasons for issues when you open up the throttle on a manifold injected engine is there is a small pooling of fuel at the bottom of the runner in the head that collects some of the fuel passing through and then will displace some fuel from the pool because it cannot sustain a larger size under vacuum or boost. This means you need slightly more fuel initially than the engine requires to accelerate but then also enriches the fuel mixture in larger than ideal droplets after the initial throttle input. So it can take quite a bit of work to get a nice crisp throttle.

    I haven't a clue what you said but sounds interesting 🤔 obviously this is way above my level of understanding....😂 back in my day my tuner was my screwdriver 🪛....Question what kind of power figures you can expect with a few basic bolt ons on a standard ECU obviously the moon is the limits with an after market by the seems of things.

      Oh I would never say it was bad! The car ran mint when it was up to temps, but just a few other parts which needed tweaking. A tuner probably could have sorted it in a day or two, but learning how it all works has been fun.

    • @bigjaz8768
      @bigjaz8768 3 месяца назад +3

      @MotoringBoxTV I didn't mean to say it was terrible, but honestly, with computer tunes in this day and age being what they are, cold starts really shouldn't be an issue. The company that tuned it should have taken starting into account.

    • @ChristopherHallett
      @ChristopherHallett 3 месяца назад +1

      @@bigjaz8768 Yeah nah. When you drop your car off for an oil change, would they replace bald tyres for free?
      When you book a power tune with an engine tuner, that's what you get. They'll put it on the dyno, check your vitals, then tune it to make the best smooth and safe power curve they can with what you've supplied them.
      If you want a full remap, that usually costs much more than just a power tune and they need the car for a few days, because they have to do things like cold start it half a dozen times and tune steady-state and transient throttle settings.

  • @Ceffman
    @Ceffman 3 месяца назад

    Best thing I put into my RZ supra, it just modernises the car so much with such a relatively small change. The company that tuned the car were hopeless so i ended up learning how to tune it myself. It's so much easier compared to 20 years ago and quite forgiving

  • @wobblysauce
    @wobblysauce 3 месяца назад

    Also you can save the Tune and work on another that you can play around with and if you ever think you have messed it up you can just revert back.
    The short term trims you can add back to the base map, once a week/month when ever you want and over time it will need less.

Even though its a N/A barra with a btr, for what it is its a fun car to drive and is somehow great on fuel. im very tempted to part it out and put the barra, wiring harness and ecu into my NL Fairlane and rebuild the motor to suit a turbo and run a haltech. only problem is my best mate would kill me if i swapped the sohc for a barra 😂

There's a bit of a delay in it recognising the gear change, so I may go back to one boost setting for all gears.
