    • @coachmikesfilmroom3111
      @coachmikesfilmroom3111 4 года назад +33

      Barry wasn't always getting hit in the backfield when breaking a long one. He was in a run and shoot system. They ran draws most of the time suckering DLine up field for Barry to run through em. The lions had the best passing team in the league during Barry's time and Defenses couldn't key on Barry because of the system, they had to stay in dime defense. Emmitt was the focal point of the Cowboys offense. Every defenses job was to try and stop Emmitt to beat the Cowboys. which is evident since when Emmitt didn't play, the Cowboys couldn't win a single game.
      As Tomlinson said, if you want to win, you take Emmitt. Barry was a drive killer. giving ground to make ground, lead to some amazing runs, but more often killed his teams drives by taking a major loss instead of getting 3. Emmitt was the complete back, who was the best option for every situation. Barry couldn't do short yardage or passing downs. There's a reason when Barry retired Emmitt had 26 more TDs having played one less year that Barry at the point. And Emmitt is the only player in history with 2 20+ TD seasons
      heck lets look at competition. The Lions were in one of the weakest divisions in football back then. The Cowboys were in the toughest division in football history 7 Superbowls in a 10 year stretch and two of the all time greatest defenses in Philly and NY, with another great D in Washinton and heck even the Cardinals had some good defensive years when Ryan coached em.

Emmit didn't need to dance as much because he had gigantic holes and mostly just had to beat an arm tackle. Emmit was the bulk of the Cowboys' offense, but they did have a great offense even without him. Lions had Barry Sanders and that's it. if he didn't dance as much as he did they would have been even a worse team. I'm not one to dismiss what Emmit did. He was great. So was Barry. In a Bob Costas interview, Emmitt was very gracious, as Bob asked him who was better, and he had no problem admitting Barry was better. Emmitt was a great running back, but he had an offensive line that Barry on dreamed of. His talent, and that line, kept Emmitt healthy longer, so he could set the all-time rushing record. Barry could've had the record, but he was tired of losing all the time.

      Absolutely false. Emmitt came to THE ABSOLUTE WORST TEAM IN THE NFL!! Or did you forget Dallas’ 1-15 1989 season. One of the worst teams in NFL history. Barry did not. Dallas was also the worst team in the league in 1988. Barry had a 1000 yard receiver his rookie year. Emmitt did not. Barry had a Pro Bowl lineman before Emmitt did. Lomas Brown made 7 consecutive Pro Bowls, Kevin Glover made three consecutive Pro Bowls and they played a combined 33 years in the league. Barry also layer in the number one offense in the entire league in 1995 something Emmitt NEVER DID and to this very day the NUMBER ONE RECEIVING TANDEM IN NFL HISTORY OVER TWO YEARS 1995 and 1996. Emmitt was the ONLY PRO BOWLER ON THE COWBOYS ROSTER his rookie year. Barry was one of FOUR his rookie year. Detroit also ANNIHILATED the Cowboys in two games by a combined score of 72-16 in 1991 including knocking Dallas out of the playoffs. BOTH of BARRYs Backups had 100 yard games filling in for Barry in 1993 and Detroit went 3-2 in his absence. Dallas went 0-2 without Emmitt in 1993 and NONE of Dallas’ running backs gained 100 yards. The ABSOLUTE MYTH that Detroit had a bad line came from 1991when they lost TWO starters forever in Mike Utley and Eric Andolsek and were forced to sign retired players off of the street and even played a TE at Guard one game. Detroit invested HEAVILY in their OL in 1993 signing three HUGE lineman to 5 million dollar contracts including another Pro Bowler Bill Fralic. Barry NEVER EVER did it by himself!!!

Herman Moore had 610 catches for 8500 yards and 57 TDs in eight years playing with Barry. Irvin had 692 catches 10,800 yards and58 yards in TEN seasons playing with Emmitt. Brett Perriman andHerman Moore are TO THIS VERY DAY THE NUMBER ONE RECEIVING TANDEM IN NFL HISTORY OVER TWO YEARS 1995 and 1996. They had 433 catches for 5500 yards and 36 TDs. The back that can consistently get positive yards is more conducive to winning. If you want hit or miss that's what the passing game is for. Sure Barry averaged 5 yards per rush attempt, but teams average 7 yards per pass attempt. @imdbttruth That was due to teams running 8 man boxes against Barry Sanders. They didn’t have to worry about Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin or one of the greatest offensive lines in NFL history. The Herschel Walker trade changed everything for the Cowboys and after they got Larry Allen who many consider the greatest offensive lineman ever in 1993 I believe it was over and guess what they beat the Steelers the next year in the 1995 Super Bowl. Barry had some of the greatest short yardage runs in history. He improvised because the defense was in the backfield right off the snap and football is a team game with OCs who ran different systems.
      Barry had the chance to get the state record for rushing in a season in HS in Kansas but told his coach to let the young kids play, he didn’t even show up to the Heisman Trophy Awards. Are you seeing a pattern here? He never cared about personal accolades, THE MAN cared about winning not breaking records. Are any Lions from when Barry Sanders played in the HOF because if there any please let me know? Meanwhile, the 90s Cowboys are littered with them. All the highlights are of his touchdown runs but some of the most impressive runs were for negative to 10 yards. But if you just look at their styles, Emmitt's game was focused on those 4-6 yard runs....which are the type that keep the chains moving and win championships. In contrast, Barry would hesitate and dance more in the backfield because he was looking for the big play. The bottom line is that a 100 yard game from Smith and Sanders did not look the same. Smith would have gotten the 100 yards by consistently gaining 2-8 yards on almost every run. In contrast, Sanders would run for negative yards or no gain on 1/3 of his runs, modest gains on most of the rest and then a few runs for 20+ yards. Emmitt was the complete back you wanted in a system that allowed him to flourish under the right head coach and talent around him. People say Jim Brown was the greatest and yet the Browns only won one NFL championship in 1964 and got blown out against the Packers the next year's NFL championship. Walter Payton had only ONE 100 yard rushing game in the playoffs in his career. Barry Sanders had ONE touchdown in the playoffs and that was that infamous touchdown against the Cowboys and never made it to a Super Bowl. Emmitt on the other hand had 3 Super Bowls, was the first player to win a rushing TITLE AND A SUPER BOWL in the same season (Terrell Davis is the second one). Emmitt is the ONLY running back to win the rushing title, NFL MVP, and Super Bowl MVP in the 1993 season. Nobody else has done that triple crown as a running back. Still holds the record for most career rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, and attempts. In today's system, no one is touching Emmitt's rushing yards record. Even after the glory days Emmitt Smith still held the record for 11 straight from 1991 to 2001 1,000 rushing seasons which no one is going to touch. For the post season he has the most consecutive games with a touchdown (9), most rushing yards in the post season, and has tied for most touchdowns with Thurman Thomas with 21. Also Emmitt along with 3 other players have over 21,000 combined yards which no other player than Jerry Rice, Brian Mitchell, and Walter Payton has. Emmitt may not have been the sexy choice like Barry or Walter or even Jim Brown, but he got it done when it mattered. Those Super Bowl rings prove that.

They also went to multiple pro bowls. Cut it with the BS about about the lions not having an o-line. You don’t get stats like that without one. Those were video game numbers back then. No other team in the league had a duo like that. Irvin and Harper didn’t even come close to those stats. Either did Rice or Taylor. Herman Moore, Brett Perriman were lethal. Johnnie Morton was probably the best number 3 in the league, who went to become number 1. They had no defense, that was the lions down fall. Barry was fun to watch but he’s not the best back. Emmitt did it all. Better blocker, better catcher , better leader and brought fire to his team. Emmitt was hated since high school, so this debate is nothing new. Wait until Emmitt Smith’s son tears it up at Stanford. Everyone’s gonna jump on the bandwagon. And although he was considered a very good blocker, Emmitt Smith was the most important Cowboy during those three Super Bowl championship in four years that Jerry Jones then sabotaged. Emmitt’s blocking in the first Super Bowl against Buffalo was beyond exceptional because it bought Aikman just enough time to hit his second or third receiver, which was Jay Novacek to keep the chains moving. Emmitt was dynamic when it came to getting that first down, whether it came from running those short yardage runs or from catching those dump off passes from Aikman. You have to be about 60 to see Payton's prime...the truth is Sanders team was loaded compared the 70's Bears, yet 77 Payton had a season where he led the league in 7 categories and averaged 132 per game...by the time the Bears got Ditka, Waler played 6 years. By the time they got consistently good, 9 years. Most people don't remember Payton's prime, but one with a lot of miles on him. Take away AP's first 6...what do ya got?

    I think Emmitt was more an all around back and Barry was naturally more talented.

      Thats true. I always tell guys Barry is the best running back ever when it comes to just running the ball but Emmitt is the better running back overall

    Its not even close. Its Barry by a mile. Emmitt played for the best team of the 90s. He had arguably the best O-line in NFL history and a series of good fullbacks. Barry played for the friggin Lions and found holes by himself. I'm not saying that Emmitt wasn't good, he was a beast, its just that Barry shook hundreds of players out of their jockstraps. How about this...How would Barry have done if HE played on the very same Cowboys teams that Emmitt played on? Barry would have had 20,000 yards and 300 TDs....

    One thing that Barry didn't need at all. Was Darryl Moose Johnston in his blocking for him to make yards on his plays or touchdowns. Barry made his own moves to where he didn't need additional players to make plays or touchdowns.

      Cowboys went 3-13 and 1-15 the two previous seasons before Emmitt was drafted and won Rookie of the Year. The Cowboys went from last in the NFL in rushing in 1989 to one of the top rushing teams in the league in 1990 after drafting Smith. Same starters in 1989 and 1990 with Kevin Gogan, Nate Newton, and Mark Tuinei. Larry Allen and Erik Williams weren't even drafted yet at the time. Moose isn't even ranked in the top 10 FB's on anybody's list.
      The Cowboys had 27 different starting OL during the 90's. Only Larry Allen made the Hall of Fame.
      Difference? Emmitt won 3 SB's and Barry won 1 playoff game.

      @@safeandeffectivelol That means Barry didn't have an offense to win a Superbowl game with. And it also tells you that he was better than Emmitt.

      @@earlputnal9124 The worst rushing team in the NFL that went 1-15 was a good offense? That's the team Emmitt was drafted into when he won Rookie of the Year. The fact is the Cowboys couldn't win a single game without Emmitt in 1993 when they were already SB champs the previous year.
