How Good Was Barry Sanders?
Barry Sanders' Detriot Lions were electrifying in the early 90s, reaching the NFC Championship game in 1991. However, while Barry lived a football life, how good was the 1988 college football Heisman Trophy winner and 1997 2000 yard rusher NFL MVP? We have all seen the incredible jukes, runs, and highlights with the Lions and the Oklahoma State Cowboys, but why did he retire at 31 and was he truly good enough to claim Walter Payton's rushing title? Who is the best running back of all time in the NFL? Let me know your reactions in the comments below!

Every REAL football fan has to love this man, and not just for his unbelievable talent and skills, but for his humility and character.
Pure Class
He was very classy
Was the best at it all
Barry not only is considered the best running back to ever step on a football field, but also has one of the finest human qualities a man could ever possess. Barry knows humility/is beyond humble. When you can do it better than anyone and NEVER ACT as if you're ABOVE anyone. . . THAT IS CLASS.
Barry Sanders had the best moves ever & that's where it stops. How can you be the best RB of all time when you're taken out of red zone situations & was the minus yardage king? Please explain? With all those minus yards he put his team in horrible situations dancing around too much. Then bam he breaks away & pads his stats & at the end of the game he has his 100 yards, 5 yards per carry but his team lost, mainly bc of the way he ran. Please explain?.bc I just explained why he isn't the "greatest RB of all time!"
I never said specifically, he was the best ever, greatest of all. . and I think that's a tough one to call. I said he was consired as one of the best ever and certainly belongs on that list. I went to the same high school he did and played with his brother. So I'm a fan. And he certainly didn't get much help from the organization he played for. If he'd have played one year on a super contender, he'd of broke big records but that doesn't matter. My point, in the comments that were made is that he carries himself well, keeps his composure, never complains, nor makes a fool of himself when he scores, not in any case. To him, football is just a game. One that can consume a person. Like it seemed to in the end with Walter Payton. . not just the greatest running back, but the best "player" to ever step on a football field. Emmett Smith has more yards but I'd take Earl Campbell over him. Even Eric Dickerson over Smith. And OJ Simpson broke 2000 yards in a 14 game season and that's a record you'll never see broken. Hell I think Marcus Dupree was better than most any running back that ever played which was basically just playing in college or before he blew his knee early on, in the USFL. So there's several players considered at least by some as the greatest rb ever. It's all a matter of opinion. There are no set rules as to what the barometer is for holding such a title.
It's impossible to compare guys from different eras, from different teams, who are different style runners, etc. You can go off stats, or championships won, longevity, the most 'whatever'. Just for a player to be in the conversation, certainly says they are on another level that only a handful will ever experience.
@@biggalaxy9102 You obviously didn't watch him throughout his career. Me being from Detroit and a lifelong Lions fan, I watched him every Sunday and Thanksgiving. He lost yardage, because he ran behind the Lions Offensive Line and most of the time, defenders where in the backfield when Barry was getting handed the ball. Trust a believe that running backs don't jook in the backfield for the hell of it. He had to jook, because he was running from a defender or two that was already in the backfield with him.
The NFL should rename their Sportsmanship award after Barry!!!!
I completely agree !
The Barry Sanders award has a wonderful ring to it.
Or the Rushing Title should be named after Barry
Greatest comment on the internet!
Agreed 👍💯
About ten years after Sanders retired, one of the Detroit sports writers finally got him to stop and give him an interview. Barry finally allowed that as his 9th season wound down, he looked around the locker room and realized all his friends on the team were gone. Retired, traded, cut. He just decided it wasn't going to be fun anymore to play without his support buds around him. For him, football was still a game, in the same sense it is for all of us when we're ten years old. It was how you played with your friends.
plus they kept losing and were about to enter another rebuild cycle. I don't blame him at all
I remember my dad saying something to the effect of "You see that? Barry didn't spike the ball. He never spikes the ball. You know why? Because he's a professional and he's been there before." Barry was effing dope to watch.
I'd forgotten that about Barry. Never -ever showboated. Always respectful of the other players on the field.
I remember my father saying the exact same thing.
That has nothing to do with being professional. I hate when conservative, uptight, corny people get mad when players celebrate. Unfortunately it's usually a white person who doesn't like it when a black person expresses themselves, because they don't understand the culture. I wish they would stick to croquet or golf so they don't have to be jealous and annoyed black people enjoying life.
@@skiburnski7543 You're right, it has nothing to do with professionalism. It's humility. Why the hell do people have to make everything about race?
@@middleclassthrash Humility? Really? There are 50,000 rambunctious people in the stadium yelling and screaming for a "1 in a million" athlete who overcame all odds to make it to the highest level of sports. But you want them to be humble. The people with regular jobs and no special abilities need to be humble. You want them to be humble, basically wanting them to "shut up" and be glad they get to be in this position because getting praised and adorned and paid well is usually reserved for white heroes. Yes it is about race. The truth hurts.
Truly the greatest RB of all time. Even Emmet Smith thanked him for allowing him to have the all time rushing title.
😂🤣😂 That never happened lol.
@@trjohnson57 I never saw emmit say that. I did hear Emmit say had Barry not retired early he’d be the only back with 20k yards
@@michaelhudson863 of course he deferred, there's no use in self aggrandizing. But no one thinks Sanders would have kept up his pace for 5 more years, least of all Sanders since he retired when he did. Also, we can't take the "he might have" arguments into account because the fact is, he didn't. Playing that game Terrell Davis or Gayle Sayers would be in the GOAT conversation.
Anyway, saying Smith is the GOAT doesn't make Sanders less great. He had an incredible career from HS thru college and the NFL. Nothing can take away from that.
@@trjohnson57 nobody is saying he could’ve played 5 more years. I don’t think he needed 5 years to get 4700 more yards given he was averaging 1500 a season
@@trjohnson57 and I don’t get into GOAT debates, maybe somebody else did. It’s a waste of time. I’m a Barry sanders fan but I love emmitt too.
The greatest of all. 25 years later and he is still without a doubt in my mind the greatest RB of all. 5 different 300+ yard games, 37 TD's and 2,700 yds in his last year at OSU, 18,000 yards and over 100 TD's in 10 NFL years. Nobody really compares. He got 21,000 yds and 150 td's in 11 years lol.
He was a animal back in college at Oklahoma State! A full blown monster by the time ⌚ NFL came calling!
The thing is most admirable about him to me, has 0 to do with football. His presence, his character, his humbleness of demeanor are all phenomenal!!! Football was only great because of its people. Perfect example.
The G.O.A.T 🐐!
The GOAT! numbers got better year over year while Emmitts declined his best years were the 3 year super bowl run. Barry played with no hall of famers everyone knew he was getting the ball and still couldn't be stopped. Greatest football I've ever seen
Barry wasn't human. He BROKE physics.
Saw him live. I can't stress enough how NOT CLOSE anyone is to him at #1 RB of all time.
Oh man. I had the privilege of seeing Barry live 2 times at the Silverdome growing up. Each game he went for 100+ yards & a long TD run
Barry is & will always be the best RB of all time. His elusiveness, strength, balance, vision & ability to make 1/2/3 guys miss behind the LOS & then break it for a 1st down or long run/TD will never be seen again
Hell, he could make a 1yd gain or 2yd loss look so pretty lol
It’ll never sit right with me that Emmit is the all time leading rusher in NFL history. He was a great back don’t get me wrong but it helps when you have the best OL in football at the time plus other HOFs like Aikman, & Irvin…Barry never had a QB (Kramer had one good season same thing with Mitchell)
From 96-99 Barry was the Lions. Ppl who don’t know how good the Lions were from 91-95, I’ll elaborate lol
The two up and coming teams of the early 90s were the Lions & Cowboys. In the divisional round in 91 the Lions beat the piss out of the Cowboys 38-6 before they were smoked in the NFC Championship Game by a HOF loaded Redskins team led by Mark Rypien & Ernest Byner
Now, we all know how things went but if the Lions had found a good QB during that period of time (91-95) things may have been much different.
Ik ik. And if your aunt had a d**k she’d be your uncle…I get it lol
But they had talent everywhere & on both sides of the ball. Barry. Moore. Perriman. Spielman. Blades. Lomas Brown. etc etc. Barry said one day late in his career he looked around the locker room & most all of his friends were gone…so he hung up his cleats (via fax lol)
I was lucky to meet Barry Sanders after Bedlam 2004 at a night club in Oklahoma City. I am a Sooner and a Vikings fan, yet he is in my opinion the greatest running back ever. He was so low key it was cool I shook his hand and told him I hated his teams but think he's the best and he treated me so well it left a great impression on me.
I have never, ever heard a single person ever say he was anything but polite and gracious and I have lived in Detroit for 50 years
He averaged 1500 yds per season in his 10 year career. Just epic!!
Yeah behind that Detroit O line makes it even more epic!
1500yd/ season = #1 all time
99yd/ game = #1 all time
Top 5.
1 Barry
2. Barry
3 Barry
4 Barry
5 Barry
This is the only running back without a Front line through all his 10 years with Lions. He got all the yards himself, unlike the rest. Imagine if he was with Dallas or San Fran etc... back then, .... I don't anyone can catch up to his numbers.
Wow, what a year! I had no idea Aikman, Barry, Derrick Thomas and Deion went in the top 5 in '89.
do you even follow NFL? how did you not know that??
@@ivandaniel2596 I was born in '90...
Don't forget, someone picked Mandrich - possibly the worse second round pick ever.
Dude he's my favorite athlete of all time. I still have his throw back jersey washed to death from 1996. I used to try to cut and juke like him playing any type of running game as a kid tag, football capture the flag etc. I was in awe of his ability and his humility and humbleness makes him even better. You are the real rushing leader. Emmitt Smith is a one of a kind talent no doubt, but if I had a 400 lb plus offensive line for close to a decade, I probably be in contentention also. Love you Barry, Iam just a working class white boy from Baltimore but you always were hero and your personality is inspiring. Thank you for competition and the memories. I hope other generations get inspired like I did.
Barry was absolutely one of a kind. He was also extremely consistent.
The best running back ever
His Heisman season at OSU was probably the greatest season on record... and he was in the wishbone
Every time I hear those numbers I think about how much like a video game it is. Almost unreal.
Oklahoma State did not run the wishbone. You are getting confused with OU.
Without any question! Excellent call on a truly one of a KIND MAN who happened to know how to run ways around the den . . . Barry is the Lion!
For him to do what he did on a team like the Lions is incredible.
The greatest of all time hands down put I line in front of him and it isn’t even close
😂Except he's not the greatest in any measurable category.
@@trjohnson57 sorry you fell and bumped your head but he is and had he not left the game early because the lions franchise is a train wreck he would have crushed emmets record Emmet admits this you should probably get your head out of your ass and do the same
@@trjohnson57 doesn't have to be the fastest, strongest, the longest tenured or have all the records. When he touched the field he was electric and he gave opposing defenders nightmares. On a trash team, with a trash o-line. Stats don't always tell the whole story when theres 21 other guys on the field, kid.
@@trjohnson57 how so? Ask Emmet Smith who has said publicly he only has the record because Barry let him have it.
greatest east west south runner, yup . . . . .greatest north runner, Emmitt. 18,355.
The truly great ones are spoken of in awe by his fellow athletic peers.
Imagine if Barry had an actual offensive line to run behind?
100%!!
Barry is the GOAT .....TBE.......amazing.
I was heartbroken when Barry retired
Pittsburgh is home town and couldn’t see many of his games live but always rooted for #20 and watched every game I could & all the highlights
Barry is, was, and always will be the GOAT in my humble opinion.
I hated the Lions growing up in Chicago , but I loved Barry Sanders and always wanted to see him on a better team . this was a great story about one of the best ever
Players today don't have half of Barry's talent but celebrate twice as much
Barry, never left your side. I even went to OSU football camp to ask about you. Unfortunately I never became the athlete you were, but it is a moment in time that will never be forgotten.
Outstanding decision Mr. Sanders. your contribution to the game of Football is above reproach. Congratulations. !!!!!!!!
The GOAT. That's how good he was. Had he not retired early, no one would ever break his records.
Can you imagine having Thomas and Sanders one after another? Unbelievable recruiting!
Barry Sanders, the most humble man in the history of all sports. He just played and he was amazing. After he scored Never spiked the ball just toss it to the ref he was a class act. Gotta love Mr. Sanders much respect sir.
Best ever ... & Class Act ! 😁❤️
The holy grail of running backs.
Fact he had 1500 yards in 1998 then his last 2 carries he lost 9 yards to put him at 1491 yards don't ask me why Bobby Ross was calling running plays down by double digits in the 4th quarter? But he did cost Barry his 5th consecutive year with 1500 yards.
When your talent speaks for itself, there's no need to showboat in the end zone, something Barry never did and video supports that statement. There was no spiking the ball, touchdown dance, or in your face taunting. It was on to the next play for him. Todays NFL players might want to take that in. You see, that is what a true "role model" is in sports. He played for love of the game until he didn't love it anymore and retired. He spoke ill of NO ONE and was thankful for every opportunity he had while at the same time, off the field, gave back to so many in Detroit on his own time and dime.
Thanks for all the great memories Barry, you're truly a class act.
I’ve been lucky to see and chat with him a few times at the golf course across where I grew up here in metro Detroit. He loves his golf and I can say he is as humble off the gridiron as he is on it. Sure, I was bitter when he retired, what many of us consider early, but this guy was never rude, mean, arrogant, or self-absorbed. My dad was a sports anchor from 88/89 until about 1994 and he has said the same thing. He and Pavel Datsyuk redefined their craft here in Detroit and we’ve been blessed for one of the best RB’s ever to play in front of our own eyes. These highlights give me goosebumps today and I’m now 35.
in his first NFL season with a full back and Tight end, he got over 2000 yards. Imagine if he didn't play in the pass friendly, Run n Shoot offense.
The best, if he didnt play in detroit every last record, stat, conversation would be of Barry;s greatness. 1/1 Talent, you will never see this ever ever again, I got to watch this growing up. He was just a god, he made so many gifted gifted athletes look terrible. He was a monster on thanksgiving, he was just as anticipated as the meal.
Barry was such a gentleman and all around great player/ person. I got to see him play one time live and it was something I’ll never forget. Give him the ball three times he might lose yards, that fourth time he’s going for 40-50 yards or more.
The best running back I have ever seen. Amazing and look at the stats. He retired too soon, I miss his great running. He is very humble, this guy is classy.
Supposedly his teammates would wake him up during their offensive possession to run a route and he would take it in for a td and the go back to his nap. He always threw the ball back to the refrigerator after a score to. He didn't hav take a clown of his self after a score. Class act. With that ability to you would think he would rub it everyone's face. Always a class act.
I was a season ticket holder his entire Career of the Bears. Even though we had Payton, Barry was the Best all around back i ever saw.
An all around humble individual, and being the greatest running back to play the game says plenty about Barry Sanders!
1. Barry Sanders
2. Jim Brown
3. Walter Payton
4. Bo Jackson
5. Marshall Faulk
He's my favourite player but my favourite man to ever play professional football
Barry, Jim Brown, and Gale Sayers make up my top 3
As someone who watched him his entire career I'll say he was the best ever was how good he was. Even Chuck Norris said ,"Not Bad." when asked his opinion on Barry lol.
the best period
How good was he? The greatest RB of all-time.
The best ever. Never seen a back like Barry, before or since. His o-line was pretty trash too
BARRY All 5 🦁
Barry Sanders, maybe the best RB of all time, and he definitely did it his way.
Barry is the #1 best all time college and NFL player who ever played the game. A person like that only comes once or more in a lifetime.
GREAT VIDEO!!! I am constantly fascinated by Barry Sanders, who to me, was the greatest running back of all time; but was also somewhat of a mystery. This vid shed some light on this shy & quiet "lightning in a bottle" player that left the game in his prime. And for a years, we didn't really hear from very much from him. He truly was like a comic character in his abilities.
He Retired at the right time for Himself. Kudos to Barry. 💯💯💯
He was amazing. Had the Lions built a winning team he maybe wouldn't have quit.
Front Office didnt work hard enough. They might have went to the playoffs with a threat at wide receiver.
Barry Sanders decided to retire just before he broke Walter "Sweetness" Payton's career rushing record because he knew Sweetness while he was battling for his life and he refused to play because he wanted to leave that record in Walter Payton's name. He could arguable play for another 7-10 years and would have blown Walter's record out of the water and the record he would still be intact and probably never gotten broken.
Absolutely! The epitome of Class! He was spectacular all around! I hope he’s living a good and happy life! ❤
As a die hard Chicago Bears fan who looooves Sweetness, Barry was the guy.
1. Barry Sanders
2. Walter Payton
3. Jim Brown
4. Emmitt Smith
5. Adrian Peterson/LaDanian Tomlinson
Barry is the best to ever play at his position....
I was at an Okla State game where Thurman Thomas was the running back and Barry Sanders was the return man. It was an epic game as I got to watch Barry score on a return. I may not remember much from my college days, but I will always remember that game.
The best ever and I got to see him numerous times!
Amazing athlete and a true, modest gentleman.
Barry was scarry good that is and a great guy too... what a force he was
Greatest PERIOD
Amazing how he stands out . . . . . in every way.
Barry is the goat of running backs
Barry is the 🐐
Absolutely the man unequivocally.
The best rb period. I had to watch Barry play . He did all this with sub par QB
That top 5 draft list with 4 Hall of Famers on it, just wow. Imagine if the Packers had taken Sanders instead of Mandarich.
Nebraska was interested in sanders but they had their former Heisman trophy winner's son entering and couldn't take another back. Sanders behind those big Nebraska lineman would've been something else.
Barry was not just good. He was great. He was so much fun to watch. He had more moves than two men and a truck.
Wow..literally wow look at that draft
I'm a Bears fan; and Walter is the greatest, but Barry was the most elusive back I ever saw. Walter couldn't do what Barry did. He was amazing. It killed me to watch him torch the Bears defense during his career. But I wouldn't have liked to see it from anyone else; what a beautiful person he is. He is one of my favorite professional athletes of all time.
Without a doubt the best to ever hold that position! I greatly admire is respect for not just the game itself. But for all of those who came before him. And for the ones who played opposite and along side of him. Also he was humble beyond belief. I just love how when he scored he always just handed the ball to the ref. Never again will there be another like the great Barry Sanders. Thank you sir for all of the excitement that you brought to the game EVERYTIME you touched the ball!!!
I had to rewind 3 times to hearhow this dude said “collegiately” Lmmfao
Top 5 RB, all time: #1) Barry Sanders (is there ANY doubt?) #2) Jim Brown #3) Walter Payton #4) Emmit Smith (begrudgingly, as lifelong 49ers fan, i HATE the Cowgirls) #5) OJ Simpson (he absolutely killed it! sorry, couldn't resist! 😂🤣😂 )
your opinion is cancelled because you hate the cowboys. Emmitt is the best the true records prove it. 18,355 yards, 164 td's. SB MVP, 3 SB rings . . . .etc Barry was good, Emmitt was better! . . . .the best.

My top 12 running backs of all times of the players I saw during their careers 1973-2022:
1) Barry Sanders
2) Walter Payton
3) O. J. Simpson
4) Eric Dickerson
5) Earl Campbell
6) LaDainian Tomlinson
7) John Riggins
8) Larry Czonka
9) Tony Dorsett
10) Emmett Smith
11) Franco Harris
12) Adrienne Peterson
Other than #1-5, these are not in order of preference. Nor are all on the list because of the total rushing yards during their careeers. These running backs are on my list because even when everyone in the stadium and at home knew they were going to get the ball, they still could not be stopped! They also made the list because they struck consternation/fear/terror in opposing defenses. My final reason for naming these players is their relative durability/longevity.
I saw him play. I watch his highlights. He is the greatest running back and I’m from Dallas, Texas. His demeanor to be humble is what puts him over the top for me.
Barry = The GOAT!!!
The GREATEST!
Ridiculously good.
His college and pro career spanned Middle school to early college years for me and he was the Michael Jordan of the NFL to me.
If he was playing you watched because something you NEVER saw in football would happen with him playing.
The very best there was with class and grace.
The greatest running back I have ever seen. At times he made the opposing players look like grade school kids playing against a high schooler.
Adrian Peterson, Barry Sanders #1, Bo Jackson, Emmitt Smith, Marcus Allen. My lifetime. Marshall Faulk
I don’t know how this channel doesn’t have more subscribers but I do know in time it definitely will…Great video bro
Top 5: Barry, Barry, Barry, Barry, and Barry - in that order.
Run Barry Sanders 2 times, first down. Extraordinary.
Lovely! Well done. I am usually not a very good fan, detesting all the commercialism, the raving lunatics, the 'fantasy' crowd. But Barry is not tainted by any of that and you included quotes and references from the 'little people' who admired and respected him. How 'bout dat giving 250k to the church of your youth? Where is the generosity toward those need it from the rich guys? One season's cash toward a group in need is far faster, more beautiful, and higher in status than a half-dozen Lambo's. "Psalm 72:12-14 :
For he delivers the needy when they call, the poor and those who have no helper. He has pity on the weak and the needy and saves the lives of the needy. From oppression and violence, he redeems their life; precious is their blood in his sight."
Size will never ever have anything to do with heart. Don't ever forget it
Sweetness is my favorite player of all time but I don’t expect to ever see someone better then Barry Sanders. It’s obviously unfortunate what happened to Bo as he had all the talent to go down as one of the greatest backs of all time.
THE G.O.A.T.
The best ever, period
He was the best scat back, ever. He wasn't the fastest or the biggest running back. He was the best FOOTBALL RUSHER, ever.
If Barry Sanders and Emmett Smith traded teams, you would've never of heard from Emmett Smith and Barry Sanders would be an even greater legend.
My top 5:
1) Barry Sanders
2) Jim Brown
3-10) A bunch of other guys wishing they could be Barry or Jim
He’s the very best! Lost well over a thousand yards but still averaged 5 yards per carry. He’s the one and only. No one has stats like that. On a bad team.
