    Miyo Takano: To this day, I still think that she’s one of the best written antagonists I’ve ever seen in fiction. She’s fleshed out really well, her character literally embodies the darkness that the other characters succumb to in previous arcs, she can be sympathetic just as much as she can be terrifying and ruthless, and, most terrifying of all, in all but one world (so far), she WINS. Truly one of the most memorable characters in Higurashi.

      Fun fact (Higu spoilers): In Watanagashi and Meakashi, Takano actually fails to engineer the Great Hinamizawa Disaster. This is because of her assertion that upon the death of the queen carrier (Rika Furude), all the villagers will suffer from the syndrome and go insane within a few days- the fear of this outcome is what prompts Emergency Manual 34, and the massacre of the villagers in this extraordinary occurrence, to be approved. However, in Watanagashi and Meakashi, Rika's body after being killed by Shion isn't found until several days after her death, when it's found at the bottom of the well- and obviously, the villagers haven't gone berserk. This disproves Takano's justification for Emergency Manual 34 and prevents the massacre from being approved at the very end. I'm not sure if this is ever explicitly stated, but you can at least piece it together from the fact that the ending credits for Watanagashi show Irie as alive in 2005 - when Takano instigates the Great Hinamizawa Disaster, she uses the Mountain Dogs to kill Irie and stage his suicide, so the fact that Irie doesn't meet that fate shows that Takano's scheme didn't go as planned. Rena is also listed as alive in 2005, further evidence that in those timelines the disaster never occurs.

    I think her failures start when she neglects to understand what her grandfather wanted. The thing that any researcher and seeker of truth is meant to desire. Embetterment of the human condition. She only sought it for him and not for what the point of his research was.

    • @realhugtower
      @realhugtower 3 года назад +27

      She also never never considered that while parts of her grandfather’s theories were apparently right, some of them could have been wrong. For instance in meakashi hen, Rika dies and a day passes without everyone succumbing, so it’s entirely possible the queen carrier doesn’t exist or, if it does, it doesn’t function the way he predicted.

    You truly put into words why Takano is one of my favorite villains of all time. She truly makes the viewer realize that often the worst people had something that caused them to be that way. The Tatarigoroshi manga makes her seem so menacing, it's a far cry from the VN, where she is just depicted as ominous and mysterious.
      Her lobotomy of Rika's mother is by far my favorite, since it's manga exclusive and shows exactly how sadistic and monstrous she can be.

  • @sayo5885
    @sayo5885 3 года назад +87

    Fantastic analysis Takano is one of my favorite characters in the entire 07th Expansion universe. I'd like to share some of my own interpretations of her character.
    2 main notions just keep coming back in her story. Loss/death and loneliness. You see Takano from a very young age just keeps losing people to the god's whims. First, her parents died, then her surrogate grandfather, and finally her uncle figure Koizumi. I mean I appreciate the anime scenes but VN makes it far more clear by showing how devastated Takano is after Koizumi's death. She truly cared about him and yet again she lost another person who she held dear to her heart.
    The conversation between Takano and her grandfather at the beginning of Matsuribayashi is very important in understanding her character. Ascending to godhood, revival, and essentially obtaining immortality. Immortality through your work and in the minds of people who acknowledge you. This idea was later expanded in Umineko when they cry, achieving immortality through being acknowledged/being in someone's mind and heart. So this ideology got really twisted in Takano's mind after she lost her grandfather. She was so desperate and tired of losing people to death. She always mentions how she will succeed her grandfather's work essentially revive him and make him ascend godhood alongside herself so she wouldn't have to be alone. After she becomes a god and her grandfather alongside her. She will not be alone and gods won't be able to torment her, toy with, and sneer at her fate.
    In Umineko When They Cry episode 6 Lambdadelta mentioned how to create the greatest bully. She stated ''It's simple. Just horribly bully a person for a period of time and then grant them power. There you have yourself the greatest bully.'' Takano had been bullied by gods and now she's become the god who toys with other people's fates hence her playful, cruel attitude. She's taking her revenge and anger towards god from other people by playing it.
    But at the end of the day, Takano never reached godhood. On the contrary, she had been just a puppet of the real 'gods' of our world; humans who hold immense political influence and power. She was never able to revive her grandfather. And most importantly, the harsh reality that she is still that utterly alone child with no one to trust or rely on. (except Tomitake)

    • @WarudoChaos
      @WarudoChaos  3 года назад +7

      Wow I can't believe I forgot about that Lambda line. It does fit Takano perfectly, further strengthening the connection between the two of them.

Probably out of any other arc matsuri got the most faithful transition to anime and this kind of nuances still gets lost. It's depressing. Saddest thing about her is that even in all those worlds where she succeeded... well... it just doesn't mean anything at all. At least if we are to trust everything post 1983 where her plan succeeded. She just ends up without Tomitake and without the parasite (or in other words, without her grandpa's life work). Which ironically means that that, despite the fact that she was constantly winning with Rika, she never won at all up until she was defeated. Kinda funny if you ask me.
    I wonder if Nomura will have any role in Gou...
    (also holy crap that D*EN scene at the end here is so bad when compared to literally every other version)

    • @WarudoChaos
      @WarudoChaos  3 года назад +57

      This isn't surprising considering the Emergency Manual 34 plan was conceived by Nomura. If Takano had come up with it herself, she might have had a chance of succeeding in the way she wanted. As it turned out, Nomura's principal goal was to eliminate the remnants of the Koizumi branch within Tokyo and all of their initiatives, which includes Alphabet and Takano's research. So, no matter the outcome, Takano gets screwed and Nomura wins. In the case where Takano kills Rika and the plan succeeds, Nomura has her finger on the button and all the resources at the ready to swiftly cover up the entire incident, and dismiss Takano as a radical lunatic, very likely dispatching a unit on Tokyo's behalf to have her killed as a liability, thus completely torpedoing the credibility of whatever remains of Koizumi's faction.. In the case where Takano fails, Nomura still gets to brand Takano as an insane lunatic of a scapegoat who tried to carry out a village-wide genocide, and the end result is still the same: Tokyo pulling out of Hinamizawa and no more Koizumi faction.
      Nomura is a manipulative bitch, that's for sure.

  • @oyashirosamabrasileiro
    @oyashirosamabrasileiro Год назад +7

    Takano was a villain so good that when it was revealed her backstory, i couldn't do anything but hope that not only the club could win and live beyond June 1983, but that Takano could bury and kill this name to be her real self, Tanashi Miyoko
    when Frederika comes to Tanashi as a child, she gives her those two options and then, saves Miyoko from having the of blood 2000 people in her hands. The killer from 100 years, the torturer and the one who destroyed hinamizawa, is forgiven by the one who have been tortured by her from 100 years
    Takano and Tanashi are both villains who gives extremely contrary feelings each, Takano is a cold, maniac and demoniac murderer, and Tanashi is a traumatized and broken girl who lost everything a a kid

  • @sanashi27

    Takano as the antagonist was definitely surprising when I watched the original series many years ago. Her backstory arc is interesting and their fight against her in the last half of Kai was exciting. I know there are people who say that watching Gou without seeing the original series is okay cause the arc are mostly stand alone until the more recent ones but still gives some important info, I think the newcomers are missing out on the original story and Takano's entire role in the story.
    If they never show more of Hanyuu, I think the new watchers are missing out on her, too. Finding out about her existence and her role is just as surprising and interesting as Takano's when I watched this series back in the day.

I personally would have liked it if she was culled after the Hinamizawa disaster for being a liability to Tokyo and herself suffering from Hinamizawa syndrome by Okonogi and his subordinates. But I guess since they wanted to reminisce events from fragments created via Satoko's looping, they gave her flashbacks of an alternate scenario of Matsuribayashi-hen where she is forced to commit suicide.

    I still do not fully understand why she wanted to disembowel Rika after killing her? "For all the villagers to see"? Why though??

      Because the image of her defiled corpse is what causes the symptoms of the Himanizawa syndrome to go into overdrive. In arcs where Rika is killed 'normally' (e.g. Meakashi), her death does not lead to an outbreak of the virus..

      For me it’s because she wants to defy the goddess of the place, and the best way is to do the watanagashi in the reincarnation of that goddess. That would be the ultimate blasfemy, because also SHE wants to take the place of oyashiro-sama

      @@WarudoChaos also, I say this because when Takano thought in Matsuribayashi that Rika died, she panicked because she says that people have to become crazy and is not possible that is not happening. In fact, that’s the reason why Takano “knew” Rika didn’t die.
      Aaalso I say this because when they die for manual 34 we never have the time to see if they went crazy or not. So, that assumption could be wrong

    One thing I don't understand is how did things played out in the first arc of the first season in the anime. Keiichi's arc to be precise. Like he killed Rena and Mion, then he dies to the curse, parasite, syndrome or whatever-- But whatever happened to Rika and Satoko? Can we assume that Takano killed them both as she did in the 2nd season of the anime?
    Also, in Shion's arc Rika killed herself in the Sonozaki's resident. How would Takano finish her plan to do the Great Hinamizawa Disaster? Without Rika the ritual wouldn't be complete. 😕

    • @WarudoChaos
      @WarudoChaos  2 года назад +2

      In Onikakushi, it's likely that Takano still kills Rika and lays the village to waste.
      In both Watanagashi and Meakashi you're right in that Rika dies by her own hand and that Takano's plan fails. In both those arcs, there is no Great Hinamizawa Disaster and the village lives on.

    I could understand that she became the way that she did because of being subjected to abuse by that monster of an owner at the orphanage. I could even forgive if she misinterpreted what her grandfather meant by becoming "god" in his stead. I could forgive all that if not for the fact that she takes it too far becoming just as bad as some of the more worse characters in the series.

      Takano's exact words: "I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. No, it was my decision to get involved and that’s the undeniable truth.
      To fulfill my own selfish desires, I was going to...
      Jiro-san, tonight, we celebrate Watanagashi, yes? Tonight is the night to lay my sins bare and let them drift away. I was going to kill you. And not just you. All of your friends too. Every last one... I’m sorry...I’m so sorry."
      She literally uses the words “important friends” (大切な友達), which 100% does not include Rika’s parents, and she was prefaces it with “I was going to kill..” not “Sorry for killing...”
      Unless they reveal that a certain someone else killed Rika's parents - it's certainly a possibility which would explain the awkward omission.

    Takano is such a p.o.s. I really don't get her actions at all or why they gave her such kind eyes....also I've come to the revelation that she stole oyashiro's sword inside the shrine shed. She had access....tomitaki or whatever his name is even asked her if she stole anything. Hmm and it's missing when Rika needs it...so yea Takano is good for it probably

    Thanks for the spoiler in the title buddy,it doesn,t matter if you put a disclaimer in the begining if you spoil it in title,which most people just naturally read. I know sometimes we spoil with no bad intention,but you should change the title.

    • @WarudoChaos
      @WarudoChaos  3 года назад +7

      I mean, if I had identified Takano as the main villain, that'd be one thing, but how much information does knowing Takano is a "killer" really give you without context? Literally the opening scene of DEEN Onikakushi is Keiichi violently murdering two people, which means he could bear such a title as well. Not to mention looking up Shion and Rena in any capacity will immediately identify them as such. Satoko killed her parents. Satoshi killed his aunt. Irie definitely killed the dam construction manager. Being a killer makes you more of the norm than the outlier in the world of Higurashi. What better place to hide hay than in a haystack?
      For all anyone knows, the title could be referring to Takano's past transgressions that you would see unfold via flashbacks, and now she's reformed at the time of Watanagashi where she is a staunch ally to the main cast for the entire series.

      Fair enough, but if Ryukishi himself can spoil literally everything about Takano's role without any warning in episode 17 of Gou, a series which he openly advertised as perfectly "welcoming for newcomers", then I think we're all entitled to a little latitude on the matter.

      @@WarudoChaos *[MAJOR HIGURASHI SPOILER]* This video's title and thumbnail is still a major spoiler for the original arcs regardless. It's true that in Higurashi, saying someone is a killer doesn't really spoil a whole lot for the series because of how the arcs are episodic at first, but the same doesn't apply to Takano. Characters like Rena and Mion are presented as possible killers throughout any individual arc, sometimes being allies to the respective arc's protagonist and sometimes enemies, but until a certain point in the arcs, Takano consistently disappears from the spotlight, trying to make the viewer think there's no way she could kill anyone. By spoiling in the title that she's a killer, you open up the idea that she doesn't actually die and that she's the main villain throughout the arcs.
      also ryukishi stating gou is welcoming for newcomers is completely wrong
