To this day, Rena remains my favorite character in the series due to how much her character perfectly represents one of the main themes of the series: trust. The duality of her character can make her either adorable, wholesome and enjoyable or one of the most methodical and terrifying characters in the series. Also, her desire to protect the people she cares about, whether it be her dad or her friends, but inability to confide in them until Keiichi’s words brought her to her senses made that entire arc (I literally can’t spell the name, so I apologize) all the more interesting to watch, especially with how much of it parallels Oniikakshi (once again, I apologize if I misspelled this). Most of the main characters in Higurashi descent into madness is caused by their desires for acceptance getting twisted due to the many twisted interpretations of Oyashiro-sama’s curse and Hinamizawa syndrome causing them to eventually go insane.

Jokes aside both Satako and Takano are definitely one and the same as far as their twisted villainy goes (Satoko being the scariest of the two) so that would make them BOTH the driving forces and true entities of Higurashi. We have 3 and a half seasons, with multiple movies and ova’s… She has about as much time in the show as everyone else save for Rika and Satoko, and at the same depth as the manga too
She’s my favorite character! Has been since I discovered Higurashi back in 2010. I’m really sad she’s taken such a back seat in Gou. I just love everything about Rena 🥺
This show always got me because I’m the type who has bad trust issues due to other people fucking me over since I was a small child. Some of the times, it was bad enough that authorities had to be involved and restraining orders had to be threatened to get people to back off of me, my sister and my mother. As dumb as it sounds, Rena as a character is almost comforting to me because she shows that small, meek seeming women can even the playing field of you push us far enough. She’s sort of a symbol of what can happen if you reach the end of the rope and decide your done being docile and something about that has always resonated with me
While I know it’s not over yet, if I had one complaint about Gou it’s that Rena and Takano were pretty underused. I mean maybe there’ll be a last minute epic Rena or Takano moment, but I feel like Rena is just kinda there in Gou.
IMO, from how Gou is shaping up atm, I feel Gou is Satoko's "arc" and everyone else is a side character. She never really had an arc all to herself - Tatarigoroshi she shares with Keiichi, who already has Onikakushi. So while a bit disappointing, I'm not surprised if this is how things turn out.

Recently I've been reading Detective Conan and in one of the chapters a character "Mizunashi Rena" appeared. Later In a dialogue we find out that her name is false and can be read as "007": "Mizunashi means "no water" - so 0. And Rena, read as Reina. Rei=0, na (nana)=7." - translator's note in that chapter. Which means our Rena also can be understood as 07, and I think you know where I'm going with this. Unsurprising that she is a poster girl.

I bring up all the weird shit Rena says, and the inconsistencies of Satako being the only looper. For example, how Satako waits days after Rika dies to confront Mion in arc 2. Which tells me Satako wasnt sure if Mion killed Rika or not, and had to confirm that Rika was dead before she reset. Which means someone else is doing shit. Just a quick example

Like your conclusive take because that's the likely conclusion the average viewer would get after reading Tsumihoroboshi in visual novel form or the manga(though I barely get to read any manga). As much as I love the anime, this is something it lacks horribly at to the point that I hated the themes of friendship it had especially in season 2 because I didn't understand how it all worked due to a lack of immersion and hence it made me frustrated. After reading around half of the visual novels, now I perfectly understand why friendship was such a big thing in this story and now I think Rena's characterization in Tsumihoroboshi almost perfectly encapsulates what the entire story of the Higurashi visual novel series stand for.

You could probably remove Rena from Higurashi Gou and nothing would change from episode 4 onwards. My feelings to Gou are kind of disappointing as we don't see the other characters that much in the last couple of episodes and Sakoto's character has seemed to regress so far in Gou and there's only a few episodes left so I'm kind of worried about Gou
The best excuse I can think of for Satako's behavior is to remember this isn't massacre chapter Satako. She never obtained any resolution that arc would have gave her.Not that I think it would matter much since it's leaning heavily towards Satako's upcoming actions mostly being Rika's fault(with Gou meaning karma and all). Which she kinda is since she dragged Satako along with her and didn't even consider whether she would like it at St. Lucia. Not that it would take a genius to know she wouldn't since even Keiichi pointed out that Rika would fit right in while thinking it's odd Satako is going with her.
Several different volumes of Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni manga. And the game is likely a modern expansion of the original game. I know three of them named Kizuna, Matsuri and the recent most being Ho. They adapt the original arcs of the original visual novel series and also add new chapters exploring the lore of the game.
There is a very small chance they will ever do something out of it other than make it an emotionally significant plot device. Otherwise, perhaps nothing. I think I read in the first arc in the intro to the chapter that Keiichi probably liked her. Though watching all the way to Tsumihoroboshi, I can't find any strong evidence that she likes him. Mind you, Keiichi calls both Rena and Mion(who secretly crushes on Keiichi) his best friends on various occasions so it's hard to tell for sure whose gonna be with who. The most you get is who has feelings for who. But otherwise, other than an enhancement of their emotional bonds, nothing.
I am assuming you are referring to Satokowashi-hen in Higurashi Gou. They were likely 20 in that. The likelihood of them marrying by that age was pretty low. But yeah, they didn't bother to mention any development in their relationships other than studying in the same university and still both hanging out with Mion.

Tsumihoroboshi-hen is part of the Kai VN so literally 90% of the content in this video is Kai, technically speaking. Rena has a few character moments in Minagoroshi and Matsuribayashi, but none of them approach anything near the depth of Tsumihoroboshi. If Miotsukushi was canon, that does serve as a "better" resolution to Rena's character arc, but sadly its canonicity is ambiguous, so I decided not to cover it. DEEN misses nearly all of the nuance of the source. DEEN's junkyard scene of Rena's confession covers like the last 1/10th of the original scene - it simply doesn't do justice to Rena's painstaking, complex, and complicated inner turmoil.

The DEEN anime is fine on its own, especially as a gateway to Higurashi, but it's undeniable that it leaves so many critical character pieces on the cutting room floor. I feature Rena's junkyard monologue as a prime example: in DEEN, it's just this 30 second whatever scene, completely lifeless and forgettable, in both the VN and manga, it's a theatrically rousing climax wherein Rena exposes the raw pain and suffering that she's kept buried deep in her heart. Unless you can point to an example of a specific moment in DEEN that matches or exceeds its counterpart. Sotsu is also a poor example, particularly because of how Wataakashi completely botched what could have been an incredible Mion character arc. I respect your opinion, however claiming that it lacks impact, effect, or life is missing the point to the degree of ignoring one medium in favor of the other. And for scenes that match or exceed the VN, it would be very easy to argue that various scenes are greatly enhanced through seeing and hearing the more active interactions through the eyes of the characters in the arc. From the slice of life moments in the club to the suspenseful thriller moments like Rena at Keiichi’s door to the painful/disturbing scenes like the fingernail press, it could easily be seen as better simply due to performances and cinematography taking center stage to help capitalize on the previously written stories. In the end it comes down to preference, and while the majority prefers the anime for its general way of storytelling I can definitely see the merits of the VN. Both are great, and I don’t think that one is objectively better than the other in virtually any regard As a Mion fan who absolutely understands her, I definitely disagree with these statements on Twitter. This is the first time I’ve heard anyone say anything like that, since most everyone thought it was a great Mion character arc. She is nothing like Shion under HS, which is emphasized time and time again throughout the entire arc. Just because a couple of the same actions are made doesn’t equate them, see the stellar ways that things are changed in the 1st and 3rd arcs of Gou and Sotsu. You’re right in saying and agreeing that she “isn’t tragedy fodder or a vehicle for empty shock value.” No one in this series is, that’s kinda the point of the entire story in the first place lol. They literally just spent an entire arc redeeming the least redeemable person in the series, turning them into a surprisingly deep character. For the 2nd arc of Gou and Sotsu, it truly is an incredible character arc for Mion. It shows her character and introspection in a genuinely interesting way that expects some amount of deeper thinking from the audience, instead of shoving the themes into your face with no subtlety at all. There is a very small chance they will ever do something out of it other than make it an emotionally significant plot device. Otherwise, perhaps nothing.
I think I read in the first arc in the intro to the chapter that Keiichi probably liked her.
Though watching all the way to Tsumihoroboshi, I can't find any strong evidence that she likes him.
Mind you, Keiichi calls both Rena and Mion(who secretly crushes on Keiichi) his best friends on various occasions so it's hard to tell for sure whose gonna be with who.
The most you get is who has feelings for who. But otherwise, other than an enhancement of their emotional bonds, nothing.

I am assuming you are referring to Satokowashi-hen in Higurashi Gou.
They were likely 20 in that.
The likelihood of them marrying by that age was pretty low.

P.S. You say the Anime adapts her story too quickly yet you finished the video at season 1's ending and didn't mention much about Kai...
Tsumihoroboshi-hen is part of the Kai VN so literally 90% of the content in this video is Kai, technically speaking. Rena has a few character moments in Minagoroshi and Matsuribayashi, but none of them approach anything near the depth of Tsumihoroboshi. If Miotsukushi was canon, that does serve as a "better" resolution to Rena's character arc, but sadly its canonicity is ambiguous, so I decided not to cover it.
DEEN misses nearly all of the nuance of the source. DEEN's junkyard scene of Rena's confession covers like the last 1/10th of the original scene - it simply doesn't do justice to Rena's painstaking, complex, and complicated inner turmoil.

Seeing that you are explaining the Visual Novel and the manga, I can say fair point on DEEN's adaptation.
However, seeing that GOU is directly from Ryukishi07, we might be getting a new conclusion to Rena. See you around if you ever expand or remake this one.

I'll definitely be taking a look at some of your recent videos. However, it seems that Sotsu will be the new canon ending to the story, unlike the alt one in the manga.

Great vid, tho I highly disagree with your claim that the anime doesn’t do anything as adequate or in depth as the other mediums. The stories are merely different in events, not different in quality. Especially at this point, with Sotsu being some of the best storytelling in the whole series
The DEEN anime is fine on its own, especially as a gateway to Higurashi, but it's undeniable that it leaves so many critical character pieces on the cutting room floor. I feature Rena's junkyard monologue as a prime example: in DEEN, it's just this 30 second whatever scene, completely lifeless and forgettable, in both the VN and manga, it's a theatrically rousing climax wherein Rena exposes the raw pain and suffering that she's kept buried deep in her heart. Unless you can point to an example of a specific moment in DEEN that matches or exceeds its counterpart.
Sotsu is also a poor example, particularly because of how Wataakashi completely botched what could have been an incredible Mion character arc. @@WarudoChaos the scene you described of Rena’s junkyard scene is still extremely impactful in the anime, not even close to lifeless. I respect your opinion, however claiming that it lacks impact, effect, or life is missing the point to the degree of ignoring one medium in favor of the other. And for scenes that match or exceed the VN, it would be very easy to argue that various scenes are greatly enhanced through seeing and hearing the more active interactions through the eyes of the characters in the arc. From the slice of life moments in the club to the suspenseful thriller moments like Rena at Keiichi’s door to the painful/disturbing scenes like the fingernail press, it could easily be seen as better simply due to performances and cinematography taking center stage to help capitalize on the previously written stories. In the end it comes down to preference, and while the majority prefers the anime for its general way of storytelling I can definitely see the merits of the VN. Both are great, and I don’t think that one is objectively better than the other in virtually any regard
As a Mion fan who absolutely understands her, I definitely disagree with these statements on Twitter. This is the first time I’ve heard anyone say anything like that, since most everyone thought it was a great Mion character arc. She is nothing like Shion under HS, which is emphasized time and time again throughout the entire arc. Just because a couple of the same actions are made doesn’t equate them, see the stellar ways that things are changed in the 1st and 3rd arcs of Gou and Sotsu. You’re right in saying and agreeing that she “isn’t tragedy fodder or a vehicle for empty shock value.” No one in this series is, that’s kinda the point of the entire story in the first place lol. They literally just spent an entire arc redeeming the least redeemable person in the series, turning them into a surprisingly deep character. For the 2nd arc of Gou and Sotsu, it truly is an incredible character arc for Mion. It shows her character and introspection in a genuinely interesting way that expects some amount of deeper thinking from the audience, instead of shoving the themes into your face with no subtlety at all. Subtlety is a great storytelling device, and it was employed well here. People who don’t get this either didn’t pay enough attention or simply don’t get Mion. Sorry if that sounds rude at all

Rena honestly is a awful, nasty and horrendous character I ever knew in my life. Rena was ruined in Gou and Sotsu, simply a garbage and unworthy anime girl that doesn't deserve attention or praise. Period
