Rika and Bernkastel are separate entities, but technically they're the same person. Its complicated. Bernkastel is the literal embodiment of everything Rika's been through. She's Rika's negative emotions all put together into one entity. She remembers everything Rika's been through and shares the same memories as her. She's been through the same experiences, even if they are just memories. The only difference is that she gave up on hope and wanting to live a normal life and embraced the anger and rage within her from her frustration on failing in saving her friends so many times and finally mentally snapped becoming a cruel sadistic witch. She's basically what Rika would had became if she gave up on hope or yet to become. Rika still has hope within her in Gou, but for how long, but honestly there are some inconsistencies here and there that needs fixing and connecting.
I'm curious to see where Gou is going. I've heard a theory of Bern being born(or ascending) in Gou, but I don't think this is the case. Saikoroshi-hen would have already happened by the time Gou is taking place. Rika would of "let go" of Frederica Bernkastel at this point. Meaning the two already should of parted at this point and there's really no reason for Bern to go back to the game board of Hinamizawa. Especially when Bern has shown huge distaste about discussing her past.
@@NanashiAkai Yeah I think Gou is basically a forgery of the events of Hinamizawa written by Ikuko/Featherine. Remember in Umineko Ikuko talks about how she created another novel called higurashi. I think that basically GOU is a higurashi written by an outsider if that makes sense. So like someone who was not their to see the events but heard about it probably from an older version of Rika and then decided to right a series of stories set in that village a set of What If scenarios basically. This would explain why the characters act outside the personalities they had in the OG Higurashi, why none of the original rules apply, why there are so many inconsistencies and absurdities. We also know that every fragment in When they cry is a real world. So what that means is even if a version of Rika came back to higurashi the rika from the Matsuri fragment is probably still leading her life normally unless she really was killed in 1988 but i think thats unlikely. Rather I think that Higurashi Gou Takes place between Saikoroshi Hen and Umineko. Basically when Rika casts of her identity as the witch Frederica Bernkastel to lead a normal life as child rika said meta version of herself becomes a truly seperate entity from Rika but this entity is not yet the bernkastel of Umineko. Rather Gou traces the story of how that entity which was spun off from Rika became the cruel witch of miracles Bernkastel the Miko of Featherine at least at the meta level. So the Rika we see in Gou is actually not Rika Furude the child but rather the witch frederica bernkastel who is under the assumption having Rika Furude's memories that she is indeed Rika. This would also explain why these arcs are known are known as a deceiving chapters becuase Bernkastel the witch is being decieved the whole time to believe she actually is Rika Furude when in reality she is no longer Rika
Welp... with where Gou is at now it seems like it’s Berkastel’s origin story. And that I was right after all theses years that Lamdadelta is Satoko and not Miyo.
@@Binks129 technically she could be both since Satoko does say that if she didn't have her friends she may have become like Takano in Miotsukushi the way I see it Takano was initially lambdas piece but after takano lost she decided to change to Satoko why I say this is because in matsuri connecting fragments only lambda could have given Takano the ability of certainty to face off against a deity like Hanyuu
In her fight against Will in Umineko, there's a sneaky Higurashi Reference when Bern says "But humiliating and tearing out a corpse's guts is my specialty...!! ". Since Rika is the one who performs the "Watanagashi" , or Intestines-Drifting Festival ritual where the miko/priest removes the sinner's guts with the golden rake in Higurashi.
There is one tie between Hanyuu and Featherine that you forgot to mention and I believe it’s important. In Featherine’s fight with Lambdadelta, it’s stated that her moon shaped memory device contains information regarding her identity and personality and that once it was damaged and she became someone else entirely. One of Hanyuu’s horns is damaged. I theorize that she IS Hanyuu and that Hanyuu only came into being when she was damaged and that may be in the context of Higurashi’s logic error. The fixing of the logic error through Rika’s efforts to defeat Takano allowed Featherine to be “revived” aka emerge as a being and discard her Hanyuu identity or leave her Hanyuu identity behind as just a piece in the gameboard of Higurashi. I suspect the former is an explanation for Hanyuu’s absence in Gou, as Featherine is once again the witch of feathergoing.
That's one of many other connections which I didn't mention because I didn't want to turn it into a Hanyuu Featherine video when it's supposed to be about Rika and Bern. There's also a lot of other references between the two of them such as both Hanyuu and Featherine referring to certain characters as "child of man"
GOU SPOILERS! Edit: It seems like some of this information was already pointed out by other comments on this video but I'll leave it under this specific comment anyway. To further add to this in the first episode of Nekodamashi-arc you can see Hanyuu glitching and the damaged portion of her horn looks like it's being 'filled' with glimmering particles. This might be me over-reading the situation but isn't it the implication that her broken device is finally healed? Part 2 of Nekodamashi shows us a montage of dead-end loops that seemingly have an arbitrary time of death and an unexpected culprit. Rika comments on how she doesn't even have time or a place to catch a breath anymore. Sounds awfully familiar to logic error that was forced upon Bern by her horrible game master. Another little detail I'd like to add is that Both Bern and Lambda often refer to Featherine as 'AUAUrora'. 'auauau' being Hanyuu's signature catchphrase. A little bit of meta-commentary I have about the piece-master relationship is that in Umineko episode 8 Ange got tired of seeing a distorted version of the 'truth' that Battler was showing to her she threw a tantrum and left control of her 6-year-old piece. Her piece proceeded to act in character like a normal 6 -year-old Ange. Might be a similar case with Hanyuu-Featherine.
@@sayo5885 everyone already knows about the obviously intended auau reference. No need to claim a 10+ years old knowledge that's written everywhere and in wiki as your own, tyvm.
Wait, the description of Bern looking for a specific fragment that would revive her master who had fallen into limbo out of boredom lines up with Rika and Hanyuu very well actually. Wasn't it a whole thing in Higurashi that the reason they couldn't win in the second to last attempt was because Hanyuu gave up? And Hanyuu said after that that she only had enough power for one more attempt - maybe the reason Hanyuu's power was dwindling was just because Featherine's patience was dwindling.
That's a stretch. Hanyuu never left """"""gameboard"""""" (heavy quotes because this isn't Umineko) and never had to be revived either; also, although Hanyuu had given up on finding a "happy ending", the same goes for Rika as well, and ironically enough, Hanyuu was the first to rekindle her sense of hope while Rika herself was still moping and despairing in the early parts of Matsuribayashi. The last point of contention is that no matter how you try to spin the clearly incongruous backstories of Hanyuu and Featherine and insist they are actually the same, the fact remains that Featherine never came back and Bernkastel had to forge a miracle on her own. Not only is the same not true of Hanyuu, she in fact had an active role in forging Rika's miracle together with her, and Rika couldn't have done so without her help.
Okay so there's...... Rika Furude Oka Furude Riku Furude Hanyuu Furude Mr. and Mrs.Furude (Rika's Parents) Oyashiro-sama Frederica Bernkastel Erika Furudo Featherine Augustus Aurora/Ikuko Hachijo That's a lot of Furudes......😂
From what I've found Lambdadelta could have connections with both Satoko or Takano, though she's probably more so connected to Takano for a variety of reasons
I love how sotsu is actually telling us that story, how Hannyu went missing and let Rika alone fighting against a looper and another game master, that coult pretty much be the logic error. There's no logic in satoko knowing that much.
@@qaztim11 I honestly hope there will be a new anime, the original anime really didn't show how great of a series Umineko actually is, it was such a shame. The opening song for the anime was great though
I think that too because in the op the shadow of Featherine can be seen an also in one part the lyrics read: "Suggestive silence" "The distortions in the light growing more twisted" " *LOGIC* lost to me now"
In Umineko fashion, here’s a blue truth of mine that may patch up the hole about Rika/Bernkastel’s master: Hanyuu is a piece/double of Featherine. Like how Erika is to Bernkastel. Featherine got bored/stopped thinking/fell into limbo when trying to solve the logic error of the Higurashi gameboard and abandoned her pieces, Hanyuu and Rika on it. You could compare Hanyuu to Erika in a lot of ways, while completely different in personality they do serve somewhat similar roles. Both only appear in the answers arcs and both have some kind of power on the gameboard (detectives authority & speaking red and blue truths outside of the meta / pulling rika across fragments). Erika is able to speak to Bernkastel while on the gameboard without pausing to move into the meta world (Bern responded to her with a lightning strike in the 5th game while the family ate dinner). It’s possible Hanyuu’s “auau” catchphrase is her calling for her master Featherine “Auaurora” after being abandoned.
Yeah. This still doesn't line up. Hanyuu and Rika are not good analogues for "pieces" since they exist up and beyond the """""""""gameboard""""""""" of 1983. They also both have the power to traverse fragments, which is not something "pieces" can do -- in fact, even a good chunk of witches in Umineko don't have the ability to roam through the sea of fragments. Perhaps the most glaring contradiction is that Rika was granted the power to loop before even becoming a """""""""witch""""""""" (it's not used to refer to a fantasy race like it is in Umineko, but a frame of mind), which goes to show just how different the two series are. At any rate, none of this explains the discrepancy between Bernkastel having to forge a miracle on her own and Rika actively cooperating with Hanyuu (and her friends too) towards the same end.
I believe it is probable Hanyuu is FEATHERINE"s piece the way Erika Furudo is BERNKASTEL"s piece. So Hanyuu is a reduced version of FEATHERINE without a Gamemaster because FEATHERINE lost the goal of the game. Also, FEATHERINE found BERNKASTEL after Higurashi and taught her how to eat dead games (find all the answers) .
This is so funny to me... i live in a village called Bernkastel (Germany) and i never heard of this anime/manga. So when I read the title and saw the thumbnail i was so confused. Bernkastel is a well known village to people who like a good wine since we produce mostly very good wine which is shipped worldwide. It is so random that i am seeing this video... i mean what are the chances am i right 😂😂
Gou Theory: Since Featherine is in the Gou OP and Rika is back, solving a non-solvable "logic error(?)" on the brink of suicide, I theorize that we will see Bernkastels birth in Gou. Maybe Rika is just ascending and becomes a witch, leaving "Rika" behind and claiming a new name. Her not being part of the timeline maybe solves the error in itself. Also, I could see Hanyuu being Featherine. The horns, the fact what a broken horn means, and that Hanyuu horn was fixed as we last saw her indicates at least something. Bernkastel does call Featherine "Auaurora", and we all know a certain character who says "auau" a lot. Maybe we are not allowed to think too linear here. Maybe Featherine is going to become Hanyuu? I mean it's time-travel so who knows how these things connect.
Featherine is likely the thing that restarted the curse in Gou once you compare the openings lyrics and the reason why it restarted which is explained in ep 16. She wanted to leave Hinamizawa and someone wanted to have her all to herself.
@@mibukdesjarlais534 And the logic error was also already presented. Satoko and Rika are both looping and they now both know about each other. Satoko is was pointing a gun at Rika, supposedly killing her and starting a new loop. It does not matter if she does kill her or not. The thing is that two loopers know about each other and Rika knows das Satoko is the culprit. They will never be able to solve this problem, thus a logic error. I expand my theory: Rika will erase her "looper self" from the timeline, becoming Bernkastel, Satoko will also do the same, becoming Lambdadelta, leaving behind a Rika and Satoko that have no memories from any loop, resulting in solving the logic error.
I've seen this theory floating around ocassionally; The Bernkastel in Umineko is the same one from Higurashi, but not in the way most people think. The Umineko Bern is a character in Beto's game board being played by the Higurashi Bern. There's quite a few times when she admits she is playing a character role and wanted to play an antagonistic role this time.
If you could do a full detailed full spoiler summary of the whole "When They Cry" franchise, explaining the plot of every medium, mentioning every hint, every detail of who was possessing who in which story, who said what, and all the details of how the character might be connected, I would probably love you. :D I mean the view will never outweigh such a massive video and the work that would go into it but it would the first thing of its kind.^^
i know this is a year old but like still gonna add this : that would be absolute amazing to get a nice little packed timeline or medium explaining various connections and whatnot. but as nice as that would be, realistically if its going to be done it will have to be years in the future, especially with ciconia being delayed and likely playing a big part in the connections, without it, its back to early theories where there is something there.. but like we really can't say much. Even with gou/sotsu half of the references are to ciconia, example would be the first meeting with featherine and satoko which shows that vier, satoko and takano are all apparently the same person and in turn likely tied to lamdadelta Point is: even if someone wanted to do it, a comprehensive complete version will take a few years to make just because the connections are still being established
looking at the direction higurashi gou is going, it's honestly looking like we'll be getting that connective tissue to some degree. my current theory about how hanyuu and featherine are connected is the same way bernkastel and erika furude are connected. both hanyuu and erika are "doubles" created by the witch in question to influence a game board as directly as possible. erika has a distinct personality and motivation from bern, so it would stand to reason that while hanyuu may be puppeted by featherine, her care for rika *may* still be genuine. worst case scenario, hanyuu is a hollow facade that featherine specifically created to fascilitate rika's torment, and all of her affection has been a lie. if this is true, it wouldn't surprise me if bernkastel got the idea to create erika *from* the idea of hanyuu's existence
And Bernkastel creating Erika is sorta of like Bern following in her master's footsteps. She is Featherine's miko after all so naturally she would repeat her master's motives.
0:24 well, okonogi and now amakusa have both made an appearance in higurashi gou as well, so that blurs the lines of what world falls where even more now :')
I'm curious about if Lambdadelta is possibly a similar case for Satoko in that after so many years hopping fragments, the one time her "real self" snaps from the Satoko we've been following we get a vision of the true Satoko confronting the witch. Even Featherine alludes to this, stating Satoko seems to have become a "witch" at one point. Is it feasible, then, that Satoko becoming a Looper was inevitable? It's also interesting because the end of Gou alludes to both Satoko and Rika existing separate from the current fragment's timeline, as Satoko says something to the effect of "fine, I'll tolerate this situation a bit longer." Interestingly, she had in that moment made the same gesture she generally did when about to end a fragment, implying she and Rika could still loop, but that the power might no longer rely on the specific circumstances as it it had before.
What I never understood is how Bern is supposed to be the witch of miracles and be the manifestation of the despair felt by rika in the worlds she lost.
BERNKASTALl is a amalgamation of all the Dead Rika from all the different fragments where all her friend go insane or die. Rika dies in them, too. However, eventually, BERNKASTAL creates a miracle where she and her friends survive. Rika then releases BERNKASTALso she can be human with said friends. BERNKASTAL becomes bitter because she doesn't get to live in the world she created.
Bern says very often in Umineko that she is the witch of miracles because she knows miracles don’t exist. She may have the title because, to an outsider, her powers of looping and outcome reversal look like “miracle making”, though it’s actually not creating new elements but just jumping between timelines.
@Omega ZeroBern beat Lamb in a game once, and that's why Lamb is salty about it, read the chapter in Umineko where Lamb calls herself superpaper. This could be a game where Featherine's memory device has been damaged, possibly altering her personality thus we get evil Hanyuu and where Lamb already having an agenda against Bern wants to torture her in Gou and make her lose.
Great video! Thanks for the in-depth look in it. It looks the sea of fragment Rika looped for 100 years before she reached the good ending. After that, the Frederika Bernkastel got seperated from Rika. However, she doesn't go to Umineko world straight way. Instead, she continues to hop between different fragments to figure out the distinct nature of all these fragments. It looks like she starts to become more and more cruel because of her boredom and loneliness. Finally, after 1000 of years, she was somehow able to get out of the game board beating the game master and venture into Umineko's meta world. Looks like new Higurashi Gou anime is going to show how Frederika escaped into Umineko's world and became witch Bernkastel.
Yes I think that is the chief theory at this point: that there is a gap in what happens to Rika between Higurashi and Umineko that will be covered at some point (hopefully during Gou). The content in this gap would, in theory, clear up the ambiguities with Bern's master and solidify the connection between Hanyuu and Featherine.
Why does everyone forget that we met Frederica as early as in some Himatsubushi TIPs? Is that because those weren't in original version or something? You even had your first and only choice in entire Higurashi there, the one with red and blue box! She gave you a candy in question arcs and you folks just forget about it. I'd be in 100 years of despair and torture because of that too! (also, I wonder what will happen in Ciconia regarding Frede/Rika/Bern, if anything)
To be honest, I dithered for a while on whether to include that TIPS scene or not. The issue I personally have with that one is that it's barely too vague in terms of the identity of the narrator. In Minagoroshi, the narrator identifies themselves with "That's how I was born" explicitly establishing them as an entity that exists within the fabric of game's universe, rather than some abstract third-party mouthpiece existing beyond the fourth wall rather than just breaking it from within the narrative. Of course, the TIPS monologue meets up nicely with the ending of Saikoroshi, and one could argue that the unusual use of "I" is sufficient to establish presence, but the lack of direct references to anything within the narrative made me lean towards leaving it out. If Ryukishi weren't so intentionally vague about literally everything else, I probably would have included it. It also totally feels like one it would fit perfectly as one of those Monokuma Theatre monologues so reading it with "Mr. Monokuma's Lesson" playing in my head may have been a factor as well.
You can know that in scene (monologue) X speaking character is Y not only through how that character reffers to themself, but also through the atmosphere around it, style of writing that author uses for certain characters, some catchphrases (that's not much of an use here though), how a certain character thinks, etc. While, yes, in our case all of those factors can reduce the number to two (Rika and Frederica) there's small detail that makes it clear. At least for me. Breaking 4th wall is something that I'm pretty confident Rika can't do. Unless it's All-Cast Review or just a comedy scene or something like that, but that's not what I'd count as a "character that can break a 4th wall". There are like, 4 of those weird TIPs if I'm not mistaken, and all of them (or at least half of them, that's been a long time since I've read Hima VN) had some sort of 4th-wall breaking, even if not the most impressive. And while you can just say that "maybe that was Rika talking to Hanyuu/herself/someone else (who?)", I think that scene with blue and red boxes is enough of a proof that it's simply breaking 4th wall to tell something to a player. I really doubt it's anything else. As I've said, you even got a candy from her there!
Regardless of their connection , Rika and Frederica are both great and interesting characters , if they work together or even fight each other in Higurashi Gou, it would be amazing.
I think everything does smooth itself out normally. Hanyuu not being part of the game and then eventually being part of it again could be a sign of Featherine being bored, leaving the game (forcing rika/bern into the loop until she found the fragment) , and then being interested again. Not to mention, this is an old theory, that the higurashi game was between lambdadelta and featherine. It would make sense in a sense that everyone is in the game, but with different appearances. Lambdadelta resembles takano and satoko due to her being bernkastels best friend and enemy at the same time. Their love hate relationship is shown throughout all of umineko.
lambda had mentioned that the first game against Bern she lost (and umineko is probably the second one). Featherine is on a god-tier level, she creates world setting and loops, lambda has 0 chanse to win, they dont have a judge if your case is correct.
great video! i personally as well think frederica bernkastel and lady bernkastel are both the same person, as rika split off her looping personality from herself as bernkastel and she went on and became a witch. the whole bern looking for a fragment that revives her master thing im not too sure about, the only thing i could think of is higurashi gou. bern found the higurashi fragment again, maybe toyed with it a little, and used that to bring featherine out of boredom, which would explain why eua and featherine look so similar.
I think the info we got about featherine, rika and satoko from higurashi gou alines a lot with inconsistencies presented with bernkestel originating from rika.
So, did anyone mention that featherine is obviously Eua from When they cry: sotsu? She created both Lambdadelta and Berkastel when she pitted Rika and Satoko against eachother.
You definitely are well-informed I knew all of this as well from reading the manga it's nice to know some people other than me take it serious enough to really read in-depth with the manga
Gou and Sotsu confirm that someone’s experience in loops or their obsession can turn them into a witch. The witch can separate or coexist within the person they formed in. Satoko and her witch are almost two different entities while Rika is still merged with hers almost the same identity. I legitimately consider Umineko as a sequel. Sometime after 1983 when “Rika “ is in her late teens or early twenties she gets fed up and her witch identity splits becomes Berkanstel, however because of her identity and link to the God Hanyuu she continues her existence as Rika and time travels in a fragment to stop a young Takano. Rika and her friends created a miracle which becomes Berkanstel title as the Witch of Miracles. She is literally the embodiment of Rika’s suffering and the only way out of it using a miracle. Since time is endless for Witches, Berkanstel befriends the Golden Witch and enjoys the events with the aura Miya family to kill her boredom.
Let me get this straight. If I were to look at myself trapped in a book, I would obviously say "No, you and me are not the same the person". Only because at that moment, he isn´t me. He will never be me if I keep messing his travel to become a Voyager. Is not a paradox, it´s just a diferent fragment...for now.
With the way Gou is going I'm starting to wonder if it's actually the start of the logic error and not the original arcs. Saikoroshi-hen ended on a very sentimental note where Frederika seemed more melancholic than angry or in despair. EP15 of Gou pretty much was one long string of torture for Rika, a perfect catalyst to make the resentment and hatred regain its vigor. But at the same time, if she never solved the error, time shouldn't have moved 5 whole years I think? It seems like Featherine just gave Rika enough time to regain sanity before forcing her back into the loops. Not because she created another logic error: it's perfectly feasible that Hinamizawa Syndrome is still the predominant theory in effect and that Takano is able to inject people and make them go L5, *provided that Featherine purposely created a game with no truths, rules, or use of the decalogue*. It wouldn't violate anything, so Takano could do this to any piece she wanted in any loop to evade Rika's Rule XYZ theory and gaslight her into thinking the culprit is truly random (This requires Takano willingly becomes Lambda's piece, assuming Ryukishi didn't retcon her motivations entirely). Just because she solved the error doesn't mean she provided the perfect solutions for the board's mysteries, and it's likely Featherine is pushing her to do that instead of leaving the cicada catbox alone. I never believed Lambda's logic error came from Higurashi or that she is the witch inside Miyoko Tanashi, she seems rather averse to creating her own gameboard when it's easier to hijack someone else's since they did all the work or remain an impartial observer with whimsical motivations. She was in a hell of her own, but as a GM, not as a piece it seems. This is fully embracing the fantasy interpretation anyhow, I'm kind of excited to see what answers Gou will show us if Featherine wasn't just a teasing cameo.
So... If Lamba says (I wasn't counting like bern) and says she was broken because of this, Lambda was also in the game? Watching Higurashi gou, I was thinking, what if Satoko is some piece of Lamba who was with bern on the Featherine's gameboard, who watched the new episode knows Featherine appeared, and the broken moon were placed back together, soooo, whaaat if satoko "is" Lamba and Rika is turning into Bern after all this suffer? After all we saw how is Rika is acting, the tea, the face, looks just like Bern, I don't know I thought all the time was a game Lamba vs Bern and that was all, but now looks like is more lamba Featherine x Bern
SPOILER WARNING: The manga chapter that you put in there at 6:59, could also be evidence that lambdadelta is also Satoko or Satoko is one of the fragments of lambdadelta. She was also a game piece (in presumably) the same game, but the only difference is that LD decided to not count the years like Bern did. And this may be a call back to Gou/Sotsu, where we see Satoko go through all 100 fragments that Rika went through, plus more before and after that. And this is because Satoko wanted to test her will and also study Rika. In a way, through Bern and LD, Satoko achieved her goal to be able to be with Rika even if in another manifestation (time is irrlevant and their existence although paradoxical existed both before and after the events of Higurashi).
Also the fact that in the new adaptation Satoko with the help of Hanyuu/Eua separated the base Rika and the possible manifestation of Rika that is Bern, so now Bern legitimately can live externally from the existence of Rika
Ah so Bernkastel was born from the the columniation of all the Rika’s suffering during multiple fragments that resulted from different time loops and outcomes. Though I thought it added up to at least 400 years.
imma just say it rn hanyuu is actually featherine who has lost her memory, thus when hanyuu dissappears featherine awakens and starts fucking with the original rules of the hinamizawa board THUS featherine appears in the gou op, screenshot this
@@crackcobaine yeah but it shows hanyuus broken memory devise that usually has a crack in it start to heal and then after it healed she became featherine in gou
I got 2 things to clarify 1) I read somewhere that Rika was put into the loop by someone. Cursed, in other words. No? 2) In a certain episode of Gou, Rika mentions that she wants to return to that day in the academy, to her firmer self, before this all started... anyone else remember?
I'm really glad someone actually acknowledged the flaws in the theory. So often that last part is either left out or hand waved with weaker theories. Thank you for the very even handed coverage.
Glad to hear! That was one of the driving factors behind making this video - the fact that almost everyone forgets that Bern's master was never actually identified, making it impossible to explicitly tie Featherine to Hanyuu.
Bern looking for the fragment that would revive her master that was bored could be read as without will to play the game. Hannyu was a watcher from ep 1 to 7, but in one specific fragment she had the will to be there, the fragment that bern needed. Also, featherine is considered a god for writing herself in her history and then becoming a god, with align to hannyu becoming human on ep 8. also, if we see hannyu as old R7, who create higurashi and EUA as today R7 who is coming back after umineko, it kinda make senses, its kinda he is troll writing on his own work and making his old characters try to deal with it
I would liked if rika killed satoko with the sword, that would be a great background for bernkastel iconic quote “I m the cruelest witch” because rika never had her happy ending without satoko but in order to overcome her dearest enemy she had to kill satoko with a smile in her face…but with tears in her eyes
I mean the When They Cry series has been pretty dormant for the past few years, I mean the Visual Novel is over a decade old at this point, the Visual Novel wasn’t super easy to access for western audiences to get till the Steam release came out, we finally got When They Cry 5 with Ciconia only slightly over a year, and now we got a new Higurashi anime that is incredibly tied up in Umineko. While I wouldn’t say the fandom was ever dead, it was definitely sleeping for a couple of years, but the sudden flutter of activity woke it up.
I love the Discussion about Higurashi and Umineko alot and love to read it. But you all must note that Ryukishi07 is a very very big Troll than it comes to Rika/Bernkastel. He do that alot, even in a Episode of Umineko than Bernkastel and Battler did a Alliance and Bern did a Nipah~ for Battler and Ryukishi said in an Interview that the both not are the same.
Me watching Higurashi season 1 and 2 thinking I'm not confused anymore and know my stuff, season 3 drops and I'm still cool, Newest episode comes out, Hanyuu is Oyashiro-sama who I thought was a separate being then I found out there's other series with totally different characters. I thought I understood this series but maybe not.
My theory is hanyuu is featherines piece giving her an option out of the logical error. ( the shard) She became more of featherine after her appearance started to disintegrate. Satako is lamdadeltas piece, since for this time around ( gou episode 17 and after) Miyo choose a different route. It would be logical to assume that lamda would be satakos best friend, hijacking the game to enjoy her own, but got stuck in the logical error as well, but at least on this plan now, currently, she has the option to decide the fate of the game on her own terms. Rika would be Burnkastels piece stuck in the current logical error that is all of the boardgame hinamizawa. It'd be cool to think of this arc as the main arc to touch on the logical error.
I kinda hope gou leads to somehow connecting to this stuff it sounds so interesting and they have a way to do it from the looks of things at the moment
I do know that is supposedly one of the witches right is it very possible that even though it look like a Happy Endings that it didn't end happy because if you ever watched umineko when the witches Grant a wish it's always to make something more cruel for a person that is having a wish granted in the long run
Regarding Rika looking for a "fragment where her master can be revived" you can actually think of that as Matsuri (or the end of Minagurashi) This requires a more metaphorical interpretation of what was going on but the brief version is to consider that prior to Matsuri Hanyuu basically didn't help Rika at all outside of moral support. If Hanyuu had helped earlier they could have beaten the game earlier. Hanyuu's boredom and Apathy towards the situation is what is meant by leaving Rika at the mercy of a logic error. Finding a fragment that would convince Hanyuu to finally help them in earnest is the equivalent of reviving Featherine.
I know it's been more than a year, but I'm wondering: we hear of Bern's backstory through Lambda. Lambda, who is kind of.... well, not very nice. Who's to say that she's telling the truth when she says that Featherine/Hanyuu deliberately put Rika through the events of Higurashi because Featherine was sadistically amused? Or, even if Lambda thinks that's what Featherine was doing, perhaps that's just because she didn't see the relationship between Hanyuu and Rika as one of mutual affection? Isn't that one of the big themes of Umineko: "without love [the truth] cannot be seen"? And, combining it with the theory that Hanyuu is like that because Featherine's horn broke, perhaps Lambda saw Hanyuu as Featherine putting on an act, not realizing that she's actually a really different person now.
!!! COMPLETE UMINEKO SPOILERS BELOW: !!! While like you said it isn't ironed out perfectly smooth its pretty much as confirmed as you can get without it 100% being so that Bernkastel in Umineko is a being split from Rika from Higurashi but not Rika herself. As introduced in Umineko its revealed that alternative personalities, strong emotions, even vague concepts can form their own beings created from the people or concepts but become their own thing. For example Gaap being a magical being born from Yasu's tendency to lose things. Or Ronove being a magical being born from Yasu's views on Genji. And of course Beatrice herself being a witch born from Yasu's many issues. Its important to note that while these magical entities are born from "real" people, concepts, personalities etc. they are distinct from them. Ronove is not Genji but born from him. Beatrice is not Yasu but born from them. Kanon and Shannon in the "real" world may be alternative personalities of Yasu but they had enough power that they split and formed their own beings in the meta world/sea of fragments/some kind of afterlife etc. Same with Leon that while despite technically being the same person as Yasu and Beatrice because they had a life so much different they essentially are a different person and thus Leon can exist separate from Beatrice. Much like all of these Bernkastel herself was split from Rika. However because Bern's past is also Rika's past she views her past as "when she was human" if that makes sense. Rika separate from Bernkastel as seen in the Dice Killing Chapter got to live happily in a fragment where everyone was saved while Bernkastel did her own things eventually the events of Umineko. How new media like Gou will alter or change that remains to be seem. Also it seems however that characters from different fragments who do not differ strongly though are just one being and don't split, such as Keiichi and the rest of Hinamizawa and most of the human characters of Umineko. This is backed up by the afterlife scenes in Higurashi and the fact that you don't have a million different Jessica's running around in the Sea of Fragments etc. All the different versions of themselves from across the fragments seem to share a single soul if you will. Its as if there is a certain threshold that exists that when crossed causes a new being to be born split off from another one like Bernkastel from Rika, Kanon and Shannon from Yasu etc. but if you don't then you are just one soul split across fragments/timelines. This also explains how Keichii and the like in Higurashi at one point could remember events that the versions of them from other fragments did because beyond their individual fragments in the higher plane they are the same. Due to the nebulous nature of how this all works in WTC and the fact that R07 rarely gives 100% concrete answers this is mostly my interpretation of things but from what I can tell it mostly seems to line up with everything in both series.
Solid theory! While it's true that Ryukishi is infamous for coyly avoiding saying anything definitive with Red Truth, I am personally surprised at how much has lore has been added to the canon thus far in Gou so I'm holding out hope. At the end of the day, I am expecting Gou to shortchange us when it comes to the Rika/Bern connection, but I'm excited to be proven wrong.
@@WarudoChaos I haven't watched Gou yet, I watched Episode 1 when it came out but the initial disappointment when it was revealed that it wasn't an actual remake and just being busy with other things just kinda kept me from coming back. @@JJAB91 Gou is a sequel, as far as we can tell thus far, and is adding onto the canon, post-Saikoroshi. We won't be able to tell how good it is until it's over, of course, but for now, it's been a very interesting ride and is shaping up to go in some potentially exciting directions.
@@WarudoChaos Thats what I've heard so far, thanks. Do we know yet if its just the one season or is it going to be split between a season of question arcs and a season of answer arcs?

A thought just occured, spoiler alert by the way Since satoko has been given the powers to loop through timelines doesn't that mean she has to potential to create a being similar to bernkastel given enough time? If so is it wrong to assume, and this is merely a hypothesis based off of physical similarities, that satoko could end up creating or becoming Lambdadelta
Considering that Satoko is driven by her desire to make Rika stay in Hinamizawa as a certainty, I think the iterations of Satoko from multiple fragments that will make sure that Rika's fate is doomed in said fragments will culminate into a singular being (which will become one with Satoko, similar to Bernkastel being one with Rika), Lambdadelta. It's also worth noting that Lamdadelta's schtick is that she rewards those who work hard to achieve their goals with absolute certainty, a trait that can be attributed to Satoko's current tirade with Rika at the moment (where Satoko constantly schemes on ways to ruin Rika's lives in the fragments). The biggest puncture to this theory is the existence of Takano and her relation with Lambdadelta, which was established before GouSotsu's current conflict. I'm really excited as to how this will soon turn out.
What's the nature of the logic error exactly in Bernkastel past? If it is higurashi gameboard, Hanyuu, a fantasy element = logic error? However now we have Gou and Hanyuu doesn't play a part and is now gone What is the logic error now, if previously Hanyuu wasn't the logic error at all?
All things considered, I believe the logic error is likely takano's motivation Simply put, rika thought she 'solved' the murder from 1983, by realizing takano was trying to kill her to get the government to let her study the sindrome, but as we know, nomura was actually the true mastermind behind everything, puppetering takano so she could get rid of the whole faction So the moment rika seemingly got her happy ending simply by stopping takano, without actually defeating the mastermind, a logic error was created (That's my take on what could be)
So I’m watching this halfway through umineko (episode 13), and I felt like I needed to know about umineko, since apparently an umineko character is supposed to show up in higurashi gou, and after these last 2 episodes of higurashi gou (18 & 19) I think if frederica is the embodiment of all of Rikas trauma and pain, I think the same can be said with Lambdadelta and Satoko.
My theory is that Hanyuu in GOU is not the Hanyuu we all (and Rika) know. Hanyuu would never tell Rika a way to end her life, it is my opinion. I think Hanyuu has no other option and have to do that (because of the new enemy) or it wasn't Hanyuu overall that give the tip of the Sword/splitter to Rika.
there is connection between higurashi and umineko but you need to keep in mind that while ryukishi07 made both of them there are many contradictions and loop holes or logic error. best way to explain it by comparing it would be furude rika is human like all of us. frederica bernkastel is witch like beatrice bound to hinamizawa and virtually has no power accept maintaining memory of past thanks to hanyu who is also similar to beatrice. just BERNKASTEL is witch like lambda who won game they were trapped in earning title like fragment witch or voyager aka ability to travel freely to other worlds and other timelines. aurora is highest ranked witch who was game master between frederika and lambda who supported takano, you can call her god, cause what she writes happens or is created. so ending in which frederica changes takano destiny as kid, preventing her parents death is impossible by what we saw in umineko but both bernkastel and lambda and aurora are part of meta world, aka magic and they cant to anything but to observe world. and bernkastel was only try protagonist in umineko being only one who tried to find miracle fragment aka fragment where tragedy doesn't occur

@@KiritoAkira its a quote from Ben 10 alien force with the time traveler. So not from the game but relevant
Read that as Bern 10 and was like what anime is that
Rika and Bernkastel are separate entities, but technically they're the same person.
@@flamos44 I realize now that I know very little about the When They Cry series' as a whole.

Oh yeaaaaaa and in GOU that scene with satoko 💀
There's also a lot of other references between the two of them such as both Hanyuu and Featherine referring to certain characters as "child of man"
Theatergoing*
Okay boiiss! Let's isekai to Higurashi and we speedrun to beat Takano together with Rika in just one timeline so Umineko never existed... AU AU~

AU Au will never be the same..
I really hope Frederica shows up in Gou, I'm sad that she hasn't even been referenced so far.
At least Featherine made her appearance. 😊
Au....Au....RORA😈
Do you remember in Umineko, Frederica is Berns self-insert onto the game board 🤔 just an observation idk if it's of any significance
You Predicted it!!! The Split in Episode 10 of Sotsu
In Umineko, A piece Beatrice couldn't do a lot of things that meta-world Beatrice can do so it may explain Hanyuu-Featherine.

Gou Theory:
Since Featherine is in the Gou OP and Rika is back, solving a non-solvable "logic error(?)" on the brink of suicide, I theorize that we will see Bernkastels birth in Gou.
Well if Rika kill Satoko while dying she would go back to a world where it is Satoko's turn therefore creating a logic error, I guess.
And guess who made her appearance in the latest episode of Gou? 😁
I expand my theory:
Rika will erase her "looper self" from the timeline, becoming Bernkastel, Satoko will also do the same, becoming Lambdadelta, leaving behind a Rika and Satoko that have no memories from any loop, resulting in solving the logic error.
LambdaDelta traveled back in time from GOU
I've seen this theory floating around ocassionally;
The Bernkastel in Umineko is the same one from Higurashi, but not in the way most people think.
:D I mean the view will never outweigh such a massive video and the work that would go into it but it would the first thing of its kind.^^
i know this is a year old but like still gonna add this :
that would be absolute amazing to get a nice little packed timeline or medium explaining various connections and whatnot.
but as nice as that would be, realistically if its going to be done it will have to be years in the future, especially with ciconia being delayed and likely playing a big part in the connections, without it, its back to early theories where there is something there.. but like we really can't say much. Even with gou/sotsu half of the references are to ciconia, example would be the first meeting with featherine and satoko which shows that vier, satoko and takano are all apparently the same person and in turn likely tied to lamdadelta
Point is: even if someone wanted to do it, a comprehensive complete version will take a few years to make just because the connections are still being established
looking at the direction higurashi gou is going, it's honestly looking like we'll be getting that connective tissue to some degree.
my current theory about how hanyuu and featherine are connected is the same way bernkastel and erika furude are connected. both hanyuu and erika are "doubles" created by the witch in question to influence a game board as directly as possible. erika has a distinct personality and motivation from bern, so it would stand to reason that while hanyuu may be puppeted by featherine, her care for rika *may* still be genuine. worst case scenario, hanyuu is a hollow facade that featherine specifically created to fascilitate rika's torment, and all of her affection has been a lie. if this is true, it wouldn't surprise me if bernkastel got the idea to create erika *from* the idea of hanyuu's existence
Its the pronunciation-'furude rika' can be 'frederika bernkastel' since it's Japanese pronunciation Frederika=Furude Rika
After this week's episode on the 2020 sequel, I can't wait for how it ties everything together.
Yep.
There are some many questions.
Are we watching a bernkastel origin story?
Is satoko lambda?
When will featherine show up?
Ngl Rika is the best character
Fact

Small channel but high class content u deserve wayyyyy more subs
Fair enough - like I said, I went back and forth on it for a while and I honestly could have gone either way on it.
Regardless of their connection , Rika and Frederica are both great and interesting characters , if they work together or even fight each other in Higurashi Gou, it would be amazing.
dude your content is clean and high quality please keep up the good work
I think everything does smooth itself out normally.
Featherine is on a god-tier level, she creates world setting and loops, lambda has 0 chanse to win, they dont have a judge if your case is correct.
oh i *NEED* this to be revised with the information from higurashi GOU
great video! i personally as well think frederica bernkastel and lady bernkastel are both the same person, as rika split off her looping personality from herself as bernkastel and she went on and became a witch. the whole bern looking for a fragment that revives her master thing im not too sure about, the only thing i could think of is higurashi gou. bern found the higurashi fragment again, maybe toyed with it a little, and used that to bring featherine out of boredom, which would explain why eua and featherine look so similar.
You definitely are well-informed I knew all of this as well from reading the manga it's nice to know some people other than me take it serious enough to really read in-depth with the manga
nice video keep up
Gou and Sotsu confirm that someone’s experience in loops or their obsession can turn them into a witch.
Nice....eleina anime ...similarity...
Finding out "Hanyuu" is behind her new extra cruel loop would certainly give her a new kind of resentment
1:09 notice the damaged horn of hanyou
Yes...
@@user-xh6ju3pg8c which language is this, Tamil?
I love how you used the thing at the end with red truth so where's the blue truth
Can’t wait for Higurashi SOTSU!
That eye thing Rika is doing is one way to bring back the black hole Chan meme.
SPOILER WARNING:
The manga chapter that you put in there at 6:59, could also be evidence that lambdadelta is also Satoko or Satoko is one of the fragments of lambdadelta.
So far in the sequel, looks like the witches are really involved. But we won’t know for sure until we actually have official words saying so.
Damn she gave example of monkey in 21 episode of Higurashi Gou
Ah so Bernkastel was born from the the columniation of all the Rika’s suffering during multiple fragments that resulted from different time loops and outcomes. Though I thought it added up to at least 400 years.
imma just say it rn hanyuu is actually featherine who has lost her memory, thus when hanyuu dissappears featherine awakens and starts fucking with the original rules of the hinamizawa board THUS featherine appears in the gou op, screenshot this

bro your theory might be legit now. isnt that featherine who appear on the last scene on eps 20 higurashi:gou?
Awesome video. You made things clear and easier to understand, ty
Dude I remember you having a handful of subs and look at you now. Daaaaaaaaamn.
The deeper i get the more questions i have lmao.
I wish all this can be explained in the anime or manga because is to troublesome to read hundreds of minutes to read the sound novel
I got 2 things to clarify
1) I read somewhere that Rika was put into the loop by someone.
That is really good video on that topics and help answer my question on it too since I thought about them be the same characters before.
Bern looking for the fragment that would revive her master that was bored could be read as without will to play the game. Hannyu was a watcher from ep 1 to 7, but in one specific fragment she had the will to be there, the fragment that bern needed. Also, featherine is considered a god for writing herself in her history and then becoming a god, with align to hannyu becoming human on ep 8.
also, if we see hannyu as old R7, who create higurashi and EUA as today R7 who is coming back after umineko, it kinda make senses, its kinda he is troll writing on his own work and making his old characters try to deal with it
I have a feeling Higurashi Gou is gonna be the missing link between Rika and Bern… If not I’m not sure what it’s supposed to be.
Ryukishi is infamous for leaving things deliberately unresolved and vague so my expectations are tempered.
new sub, loved the video
Finally someone who know my mind on this! Like damn it’s took this long to find someone like this who think the same!
I kind of want a similar analysis on the character sayo from umineko
My brain hurts.
I would liked if rika killed satoko with the sword, that would be a great background for bernkastel iconic quote “I m the cruelest witch” because rika never had her happy ending without satoko but in order to overcome her dearest enemy she had to kill satoko with a smile in her face…but with tears in her eyes
thanks for explaining who Bernkastel is)💚
(Why did people start explaining only when the anime came out?)
It's been explained for years
I mean the When They Cry series has been pretty dormant for the past few years, I mean the Visual Novel is over a decade old at this point, the Visual Novel wasn’t super easy to access for western audiences to get till the Steam release came out, we finally got When They Cry 5 with Ciconia only slightly over a year, and now we got a new Higurashi anime that is incredibly tied up in Umineko.
Fun fact the alter ego of Rika is named after a German City
Me watching Higurashi season 1 and 2 thinking I'm not confused anymore and know my stuff, season 3 drops and I'm still cool, Newest episode comes out, Hanyuu is
Oyashiro-sama who I thought was a separate being then I found out there's other series with totally different characters. I thought I understood this series but maybe not.
welcome in the rabit whole of when they cry :D
Finally i found someone Who was as confused as me
i ALSO thought i knew stuff but then again... the series is complicated.
It'd be cool to think of this arc as the main arc to touch on the logical error.
but 07th stated lamda didnt actually finish reading higurashi until after the game of hinamizawa
Woo! I’m the 5.6 thousandth like!
Anyways, I found this video really informative as a beginner to the fandom. I love this series a lot so far.
I kinda hope gou leads to somehow connecting to this stuff it sounds so interesting and they have a way to do it from the looks of things at the moment
Keep in mind the god of rikas verse looks exactly like faa outfit wise
I just noticed that Frederica sounds like Furude Rika 😭
I saw Many people hate this anime because they only watched Higurashi Gou(2020)
Lmao, That kind of people are trash.
At least we can confirm if was Hanyu now huh lol
She did kinda leave Rika alone to herself for some really bad loops..
wow thank you!
fantastic video!! also whats the song at the intro? its so pretty
frederica bernkastel name comes from higurashi, frederica is just furuderika all together and bernkastel is from the wine rika drinks "bernkasteler"
I think Federica and her friends are made of wood
I do know that is supposedly one of the witches right is it very possible that even though it look like a Happy Endings that it didn't end happy because if you ever watched umineko when the witches Grant a wish it's always to make something more cruel for a person that is having a wish granted in the long run
Regarding Rika looking for a "fragment where her master can be revived" you can actually think of that as Matsuri (or the end of Minagurashi)
This requires a more metaphorical interpretation of what was going on but the brief version is to consider that prior to Matsuri Hanyuu basically didn't help Rika at all outside of moral support.
I dont wanna be spoiled so imma go read both real quick. Ill be back in a few years to watch, see ya then.
I want to start it too, how is it going so far, boring or intruiging?
@@Cruunar they're good. They take a ton of time though, massive investment.
I've been dying to go back as I've heard its pretty good. Its been adding new lore you say?
@@JJAB91 Gou is a sequel, as far as we can tell thus far, and is adding onto the canon, post-Saikoroshi. We won't be able to tell how good it is until it's over, of course, but for now, it's been a very interesting ride and is shaping up to go in some potentially exciting directions.
@@WarudoChaos Thats what I've heard so far, thanks. Do we know yet if its just the one season or is it going to be split between a season of question arcs and a season of answer arcs?
@@JJAB91 The way it's looking so far, this just might be a one season deal. But I'm telling you, you have to get back into it. The last two episodes were just 🧠💣💥🤯😱 mind blowing.
A thought just occured, spoiler alert by the way
Since satoko has been given the powers to loop through timelines doesn't that mean she has to potential to create a being similar to bernkastel given enough time?
I'm really excited as to how this will soon turn out.
so does/will sotsu address the stuff in 7:43 onwards?
Ask Ryukishi07. I dont have access to his notebook, believe it or not.

What's the nature of the logic error exactly in Bernkastel past?
If it is higurashi gameboard, Hanyuu, a fantasy element = logic error? However now we have Gou and Hanyuu doesn't play a part and is now gone
What is the logic error now, if previously Hanyuu wasn't the logic error at all?
All things considered, I believe the logic error is likely takano's motivation
Simply put, rika thought she 'solved' the murder from 1983, by realizing takano was trying to kill her to get the government to let her study the sindrome, but as we know, nomura was actually the true mastermind behind everything, puppetering takano so she could get rid of the whole faction
So the moment rika seemingly got her happy ending simply by stopping takano, without actually defeating the mastermind, a logic error was created
(That's my take on what could be)
To put it simply, she 'solved' the game, without getting the correct answer
So I’m watching this halfway through umineko (episode 13), and I felt like I needed to know about umineko, since apparently an umineko character is supposed to show up in higurashi gou, and after these last 2 episodes of higurashi gou (18 & 19) I think if frederica is the embodiment of all of Rikas trauma and pain, I think the same can be said with Lambdadelta and Satoko.
My theory is that Hanyuu in GOU is not the Hanyuu we all (and Rika) know.
Hanyuu would never tell Rika a way to end her life, it is my opinion.
I think Hanyuu has no other option and have to do that (because of the new enemy) or it wasn't Hanyuu overall that give the tip of the Sword/splitter to Rika.
she never told rika to end her own life, she told her about a sword that can kill someone with the power to jump through timelines like rika
Well crafted video! You just gained a subscriber.
And the theory makes sense with what we can feel from Higurashi Gou.
so basically, rika and frederica are two sides of the same coin. got it.
there is connection between higurashi and umineko but you need to keep in mind that while ryukishi07 made both of them there are many contradictions and loop holes or logic error. best way to explain it by comparing it would be furude rika is human like all of us. frederica bernkastel is witch like beatrice bound to hinamizawa and virtually has no power accept maintaining memory of past thanks to hanyu who is also similar to beatrice. just BERNKASTEL is witch like lambda who won game they were trapped in earning title like fragment witch or voyager aka ability to travel freely to other worlds and other timelines. aurora is highest ranked witch who was game master between frederika and lambda who supported takano, you can call her god, cause what she writes happens or is created.
so ending in which frederica changes takano destiny as kid, preventing her parents death is impossible by what we saw in umineko
but both bernkastel and lambda and aurora are part of meta world, aka magic and they cant to anything but to observe world.
and bernkastel was only try protagonist in umineko being only one who tried to find miracle fragment aka fragment where tragedy doesn't occur
Frederica is 古手 梨花(furuderika) in japanese
