  • I remember when these buses first started hitting the streets. The NYC area and its surrounding municipalities were experimenting with alternative fuel sources, namely compressed natural gas. Hybrid-electric propulsion was still a few years off, but why not get the ball rolling?
Nassau County decided to go the CNG route with all its buses, ditching the diesel-powered workhorses that once dominated the fleet. New York City Transit dabbled in the idea a few years earlier with a methanol-fueled bus and later compressed natural gas which led to an entire depot becoming converted to this cleaner energy source.
The Cummins L10G engine that powered this set of buses was the compressed natural gas variant of the medium duty L10 diesel engine, which was commonly found in transit buses and light trucks.
I recorded this snippet a little over 7 years ago as of this upload date... Enjoy! This bus was retired in the months following this recording.
