It's surprising to see this young man without any English background at first gained English skill in a few years and talking in the radio in English. I think verbal communication in basketball is essential and I'm glad he gained that skill before joining NBA. Good luck Yuta!

"You had to look up EVERY word!?"
Yuta is describing what every immigrant does when they arrive in the states with no English. He was lucky to have modern technology to assist him like Google translate. Back in the days, you had to carry a dictionary around instead of a smart phone.

seriously, these are the most ridiculous questions....
You go to a foreign country, you are bound to learn the local language... it’s not magic... it’s called hard work.,..

for real man, the best way to learn another language is to live in the country of origin of the language you want to speak. You're basically forced to learn it whether you like it or not.

@@volgg yes, but also needs hard work. i've been living in australia for almost 10yrs, and my english is still shit.

Questions that help you understand your own ignorance is never ridiculous.

He is with Toronto now his first interview was via translator. His English seems good. Hopefully soon eough he will be comfortable speaking to the media in English.

He didn’t use translator. He graduated from George Washington University in the states. He played in college so, he has no problems to communicate with English. But there is always Japanese media around, so he dose speak Japanese to the Japanese interviewer.

I never seen him having translator. He has been answering interviews in English for quite a while

But ... you learned a new language? Wah .... what?? How?? So people around you were speaking their language? And not yours?? And you survived???
The American ignorance around multilingualism is hilarious but sad.

Japanese junior and high school students have English class but quality is pretty low like just teacher talk about grammer in japanese and we have to write down on the notebook what teacher said. It's pretty hard to master second language for me too

The interviewer is too much. Obviously never opened a foreign language textbook. His assumption are too moronic.

i think "know no English" is abit exaggerated? because that's saying Japanese schools don't teach English AT ALL. He couldn't speak yea but let's not get carried away.

    • @Kitajima2

Tbf Japan is pretty homogeneous, and is not surrounded by English speaking countries, so most Japanese people generally don't feel the need to improve their English, even if it is the lingua franca.

Wow what a terrible interview. I'm not any kind of linguistic genius, but every time I visit another country.... I learn enough of the language to have a basic conversation.
American culture is so ridiculously insular. Imagine believing so blindly that your country is "tHe gReAtEsT nAtiOn oN eArTh" that the thought of travelling to another country and learning their language is so unfathomable!
I've read Chris Vernon's articles for years but I've only recently watched videos of his content. He seems (at the very least) completely ignorant of other countries and/or cultures.... but maybe he's just not very smart. He sure doesn't sound very intelligent here, or in some other videos I've watched.
"So you didn't know any words.... and then you learned some words?!?! AMAZING!!"
