    Hey everyone! Today I am comparing 2 full frame camera bodies at a portrait photoshoot. I have the Sony A7IV with the GM 35mm f1.4 verses the LUMIX S5II with the 35mm f1.8. I have a bunch of photo comparisons for you to take a look at in different locations with natural light. I share each of the photos at 100% crop, unedited so you can really see what each of the files look like side by side. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!!

    I’ve used both and I have to say that I find the Sony autofocus interface more user friendly. In terms of accuracy of performance and speed I find both about the same. I’m an S5ii shooter (and I love it as a camera more than I enjoyed my older A1 and A7siii). One major issue for Panasonic to fix in my opinion is that tracking and wide area are separate AF functions. It works when you get used to it but I’d prefer the combined way of doing it that Sony offers.
    Outside of that there were a few other things that I think were missed in the review….
    - LUTS : the Lumix allows you to use the same LUTS that you use for video for stills. This is huge if you want to get reasonably great SOOC jpeg looks with your Lumix. Think of them as more powerful Fuji recipes.
    - Better rear LCD - it can get much brighter in bright sunlight and is of higher resolution and a much more responsive touch user interface.
    - Better touch interface - the Panasonic UI is very touch friendly
    - Video capabilities - the S5ii capabilities vastly exceed the A7iv that I don’t know where to start. ProRes RAW, Blackmagic RAW, record to external SSD, vastly better stabilization that doesn’t crop your image, better internal amps, can shoot in the LUT that you upload to the camera to better colour match an external camera workflow, cleaner video output, better codec and bitrate options, cleaner high ISO, internal cooling fan design etc.. waveforms, vectorscopes, shutter angle etc… It has features that leave the A7siii and challenge much much more expensive FX cameras.
    - regarding the lens options for L-Mount. One thing to note is that DJI, Astro and Samyang recently joined as first party L-mount alliance members. The nature of the first party L-Mount alliance vs Sony 3rd party licensing is that each manufacturer in the L-Mount alliance gets full access to the capabilities afforded by the camera to which it is attached. For example, on the Sony if you shoot with Tamron or Sigma lenses, you cannot take advantage of focus breathing compensation (this inherently crops your video). So while it is true that Sony has a larger lens lineup (to date), not all of those lens manufacturers can or will ever be able to fully exploit the full capabilties of Sony’s camera bodies.
    - Stabilization - the S5ii provides significantly better stabilization both in stills and video.
    This is not to say that the Sony is not the better pure stills body - I think if you want pure stills and don’t care about the other stuff that I mentioned above, the additional resolution would be preferable for certain shooting envelopes. However if you don’t need extra cropping, then I think the S5ii (for my tastes at least) is the better FF camera and likely only going to get better with future firmware updates.

    I can't say I wasn't waiting for this video. The S5ii is not only a superb video camera, but also a great photo shooter. When looking up comparisons, it's just usually not the thing much talked about.
    For photography, it eventually becomes a question of lens availability and feature needs of the iser I feel like. L-Mount just isn't where Sony is already, especially with 3rd party support, but the S5ii definitely takes a lead with software features like pre-shutter buffering, sensor shift and custom LUTs for picture profiles if those are things one wants to use. Ultimately, those are two very similar tools, yet still for very different people.

    • @apricanephoto
      @apricanephoto 11 месяцев назад +4

      Partially agree, though for a full frame system dedicated to portraits you have all the Sigma DG DN 1.4 primes available in L Mount, so I'd say it's already very good there if this is the quality level that you're shopping at, especially if you're an enthusiast rather than a professional.
      Based on that, if someone came to me and asked for recommendations on a full frame portrait system, I'd have to at least encourage them to look seriously at the S5II (where I would probably equally discourage them from going Nikon or Canon unless they were financially independent).

    • @jockturner1547
      @jockturner1547 11 месяцев назад +3

      @@apricanephotoyeah exactly, while the Sony lens line up is massive, the L-mount is filled out with all the important lenses that the vast majority of users need so it’s generally a non-issue. The only lacks a few niche lenses and for those who need them, already know this and will buy the camera they need

    I was planning to buy an S5II mainly for video and was excited for the ability to have an amazing video/photo hybrid at such an affordable price. However, the HDMI input lag was a deal breaker for me so I’ll be going for the Sony FX30 instead. Might get an A7IV for photography later if I need it. Having the FX30, it seems smarter to go with the A7IV as a photo camera because they can use the same lenses.

      L mount is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with! That being said, everyone on RUclipsrs just repeats the same old narrative that the L mount is weak or limited lens system, but there isn’t many lenses left that aren’t in the L mount, probably really only extreme telephoto for high end wildlife photography. For most use cases, like wedding, event, portrait, product and so on, you can do it all on the L mount…

    I think it is great that there are four serious brand options for full frame mirrorless cameras. In the DSLR era there was really only Nikon and Canon.
    We consumers should be thankful to Sony and Panasonic in particular (and probably indirectly Apple) for pushing innovative features - in video in particular - down into more ‘affordable’ hybrid cameras. Groundbreaking ‘accessible’ cameras in this context in my opinion were Sony’s A7III and LUMIX’s GH5.
    Now that LUMIX has finally caught up (more or less) in the AF department, what do you think the next wave of features will be in this ‘prosumer’ level FF camera? Built in NDs? More AI…?

      next step might be reverting back to smaller sensor formats and smaller lenses for photography. AI eases the noise. Sony, Fuji and Canon all have new APSC sensors and that old 20mp M4/3 is rife for an update. Not many people need very high resolution and the smaller sensors have all kind of advantages.

    • @ilaion11
      @ilaion11 3 месяца назад

      What color science? On RAW files or JPGs? Because every RAW developer software interprets colors in its proprietary way depending on the DCP profile/ICC profile used. These being said, both cameras use SONY sensors with the latest color filter array, meaning both cameras have the same colors in Lightroom and C1. Aside that, you can always create your own DCP/ICC profiles for any camera in Lumariver profile designer. People talk color science having absolutely no idea of what they are talking about.
      I honestly never liked how Adobe deals with colors in their profiles so that is why I make my own, having huge success in starting with top notch accurate colors!

    • @ilaion11
      @ilaion11 3 месяца назад +1

      There are only two cameras with better color filters, one is the Nikon Z8 and another is the Panasonic S1R, the last one having much tighter filters leading to better colors, but in practice, when you create profiles for these cameras, they essentially look the same. There is only one camera that is above all commercially available cameras and that is the PhaseOne IQ4/3 100 Trichromatic. I wish all sensors would have this type of color filter array...

    • @OkwyUgonweze
      @OkwyUgonweze 3 месяца назад

      @@ilaion11 regardless of what raw converter you deploy the color science backed by the camera maker will have an impact on that .
      They may be the same sensor but that does not translate into same color science. Sony also make sensor for Fuji and Nikon but their colors and white balance are way ahead of Sony .

    • @ilaion11
      @ilaion11 3 месяца назад

      @@OkwyUgonweze you have no idea of what you are talking about. I can have the exact same look of any camera, but again, I make my own profiles. You cannot do this with the basic Adobe Color profile in Lightroom. The only difference a manufacturer can embed in the camera pipeline is the color balance filter in front of the sensor that can and do influence colors to a more or less degree, but even that is negligible. For example, Fuji has a looser color filter while Sony has a tighter color filter, this having a small influence on the red brightness, but that's all.

      She's obviously not an Sony ambassador. Because still after her brand switch, she had continued reviewing Canon's cameras (R5 and R6). Whereas ambassadors wouldn't be allowed (contractually) to feature any other brands' cameras on their channels, AFAIK.
      Who knows, maybe Canon sponsors her continuation of reviewing Canon cameras (maybe with a bit of hope of winning her back) (without success though) 😉

  • @77dris
    @77dris 6 месяцев назад

    Next to the Canon R6 Mark II, I'd say these two cameras are 2nd (A7IV) and 3rd best (S5II) in class.
    I don't think the resolution really matters. The AF and lens sharpness will make a bigger difference than a few MPs. I've compared 24 MP files upscaled (output from LR to 45 MP) and can barely tell a difference to native 45 MP files. I've also printed billboards with 8 MP files so 20 MP or above can get you prints of any size with ease.

    This comparison has only one big huge problem: Sony lens you chose is way more expensive than the Lumix one, it costs 3 times more. This affects focus, sharpness, bokeh, colors etc...
    You compared a 2300$ kit with a 3700$ one and that's pointless. You should have picked the Sony 35mm f 1.8 that costs almost the same that the Lumix.

      @@myoti9831 To be honest, the cons of the sony system are pretty strong, but yes I agree the sony system does work for a majority of people but the video side is lacking on my personal usage case.
      For the S5II
      External BRAW (the best iteration in another camera brands camera other than the BMPCC cameras alone), better looking video quality in terms of a much more organic looking video, open gate, waveforms + histograms, luminance spot metering to check exposure of certain locations and not just the center or overall, of the frame?! Like that's amazing. Photos are razor sharp and the AF for subjects are amazing, I just did a portrait shoot and the AF works fantastic only missing 1-2 photos when they didn't matter. REAL TIME LUT MONITORING? I can literally important my phantom luts and expose for them in camera or bake them in without the need of an external monitor purchase!! Internal cooling fan so u never have to worry about heat issues as well! Dual native iso at 4000 instead of Sony's 3200. Rear LCD is at 1.84m dots and every photo is amazing and looks just look what you see on your computer screen upon import. Literally the best IBIS out of every camera system as well.
      As for the A7IV
      Sony AF is great but occasionally too robotic in terms of racking speeds from subject to subject for video when speed is set high/responsiveness, no BRAW, no histograms or waveforms. 33mp is great for photos but I lean more towards video in a hybrid camera not photo specs. No lut monitoring and requires u to buy sonys overpriced cinema line, firmware updates are gimped on sony systems in terms of features (rip A7S3 lol). No Internal cooling fan. Dual native is at 3200 only. Rear LCD is at a fat disappointing 1.04m dots only. IBIS leaves little to be desired.
      I was just at a food shoot for social media and the first shooter had the A7IV and I picked it up and felt the insane difference in grip, I have somewhat bigger hands and the S5II grip is literally god send to not have your pinky fly off the bottom.
      EVF on both are the same so nothing to say there. All for under $2000 and you can find the S5II for under $1800 used as well makes it hard to recommend the A7IV.

Both cameras are great and the Lumix now has amazing autofocus, the only real drawback I see to the Lumix S5II is its optics, very expensive and far from Sony's options, at least for the moment.

    1. Panasonic and Adobe still not to the imports working well do you will experience dropped images which is a deal breaker
    2. The lumix also has a lack of functionality with hss on godox lighting. This is critical for portrait shooters outside.
    3. The support on Panasonic cameras Is ABYSMAL. like the worst brand ever in this regard.
