Graham, thank you, brother. This is the very first video explaining HOW this unit works and WHAT you can do with it. Pro Tools has been on my radar for about a couple of weeks now. I'm convinced the 11 Rack is the way to go.
Great work and keep us forever informed.

People keep saying "Axe Fx" but frankly, I got my Eleven Rack on ebay like 6 years ago for 300 bucks, and I still can't get rid of it. It sounds really natural when you use it right.
(I recommend avoiding all the fx, stomps, and whatnot. Just record the raw amp in mono, like you would your actual amp)
I might get the new Axe FX 3 that's coming out soon, but my Eleven Rack is not going anywhere.

We still have two Eleven Racks in use every day in our studios. They are built like tanks, still produce good guitar tones when using quality “home grown” presets (rigs) and can still compete against much more modern modelers to a large extent. If Avid were to develop updated Mac drivers and Eleven Rack Editor these units would go on being used for many more years to come.

Hey Blues House, glad to hear you're enjoying your Eleven Rack. Happy to report ER is not discontinued. In fact we featured Eleven Rack on our Winter NAMM 2013 booth just a few months ago. You can imagine how stoked folks were to try it out.

Hey man. Technology may have advanced but I am under the opinion that the gains have been more incremental than we are lead to believe. I am still using a digitech rp250 and a line 6 pod hd and they still sound great and still pass as amp simulators. Technology from ten years ago to today I believe are only 20% gains rather than 2 or 3 times better as believed.

@@AnthonyChhan Agreed 100 % and at the prices they are charging today is crazy!! Look I am all for the latest and greatest but when you have to pay $ 1,500 and up for a Kemper/Axe FX etc that's not cheap.

I have so many stupid questions man. Let me unravel my thoughts and maybe someone will answer. You will see I am struggling.
    A. As an audio interface
    1. what's the sample rate on that?
    2. What's the latency, head room and stuff?
    3. And if it's cool, except for the drums and hook live multiple mics why then you use a saperate pretty expensive audio interface?
    B. More trouble stuff, as a mic/acoustic instrument/vocal amp
    1. How crappy is it?
    2. Can you apply standalone eq, compression, reverb and stuff?
    3. And still if it's OK why you have the coolest mic amps next to it on your set up?
    C. Totally general
    1. Many devices claim being and audio interface alongside their main use. The one I have in mind has for sure a crappy mic amp and 44100 sample rate and probably huge latency issues. So is it worth to run its signal through the eleven rack, use it standalone on stage or as an audio interface?
    2. And cause I haven't actually get it. Is it possible to plug guitar, vocal, and something like a mixer/sampler etc on it the same time?
Is it worthy for all that? Like many questions but if you go through all the questions, my way of thinking is quite simple.
Thank you for your time again and generally
Thanks in advance to everyone who may answer

Hello there! Look, what about you make a A/B comparisson with a VOX amp in the 11R and your real vox? As long as it is the same amp. Lot's of people know that the real amp is not the same as an emulator, BUT, most of them, if listening an A/B, they cannot even get right whats the real deal and whats the 11r simulation.
Maybe you could use a 57, the same cabinet and compare both, with same knob configuration, and mic axis.
    Love your work.

The True Z circuit is not digital/dsp. It is actually a set of resistors and capacitors inside the 11R that are being switched. That's part of why it sounds and feels so convincing.

Great video! Thanks so much. I also don't like amp emulation as I'm old school being that I'm old and grew up jamming in the 70's and 80's and using a tube amp and letting the volume knob on the guitar be the distortion pedal basically.
Question though. Didn't you say you can use this as a head and go straight into a cab? I'm confused because I thought you'd have to have a powered speaker or something to run it live? Like a monitor or Mixer or something?
Thanks in advance and I hope you didn't mind me commenting on such an old vid.
You really explain it well, and I'm just slow! Thanks again for such a cool video!

I gotta admit, I'm somewhat addicted to the Amplitube Custom Shop. Their Engl and Soldano sims are just outstanding...HOWEVER, it WILL NOT and DOES NOT feel right playing through a DI into the computer because the impedance isn't the same as plugging into an amp and WILL affect how you play (at least it does me). Solution? Just swipe one of the preset slots on the 11R so it's a completely sterile, dry guitar tone...because the 11R, apart from being an interface/modeler, is just a suped up DI box with that impedance matching DSP behind the input jack connection. Dudes, it's night and day. It's sooooooo gratifying to be able to play through a Powerball without having to buy a Powerball. It feels perfect. If anyone else does this, disregard, but that's what I do and it's the shit.

    • @datamasked623
      @datamasked623 9 лет назад

brian bridges As it turns out, you don't even need to wipe a clean slot for dry guitar tones. Amplitube will bypass the modeled rigs in 11R at all times. You can actually just plug straight in. It should be noted that I'm using a Symphony I/O as my interface and I have the 11R slaved to it via SPDIF, but I set my input to Amplitube as the 11R and output as the Apogee and that's pretty much it. I discovered this by accident, but yeah...probably still a wise idea to have a completely dry setting on your modeling units anyway.

Nice video Graham! I bought Eleven Rack with Pro Tools 12. Its a great deal! The only problem Im having now is with setting up my MIDI pedals. I bought FCB1010 to save money vs. using the recommended Voodo Labs pedals. Having a horrible time trying to setup FCB1010 expression pedals for ElevenRack Wah. Have you had any luck setting up eleven rack for this?

Have it. Love it. Loved the review. This is for someone who is building a quality but affordable home studio for the first time without spending a bucket of cash. As he says, it does a lot.
It is a great interface. Use it with mic, guitar (amps, cabs, mics, effects, etc.), midi keyboard controller.
Add in the full version of Pro Tools (not a lite version) and you could get a nice starter studio for less than a grand when you buy a mic, midi keyboard, studio headphones and misc cables. way cool

I'm getting an Eleven Rack and I have Alesis MK2 monitors. Better to run them directly to the Eleven Rack, or run the Eleven to a power amp to the monitors....

Great review Graham. It's a great unit. I've had one for a year or so and I can't find fault with it especially for the capabilities of being a guitar rig for live and recording, an interface and also a mic pre. The software to control it is already in Pro Tools but someone has adapted it for use in Cubase as well. As you say for the price it's hard to beat.

I'm looking into getting some monitors soon for my little home studio. Have any recommendations? I'd really prefer to have 8" monitors because I do a lot with punk/metal where I need to hear the bass response well and then also indie dance pop where I also need decent bass response.

Hi Graham, Hope you are having a wonderful day. I have been following your work off and on for many years. I have an odd question for you....I am thinking about upgrading my microphone. Oddly enough, I own the Eleven Rack and I do not play guitar. I literally use it as an audio interface. Here is the thing.... I was considering the Neumann u87ai. That thing is expensive. Today, I learned that the Eleven Rack can emulate different mics. In your review, you focused on the guitar side. If you still have the Eleven Rack, do you know if it can truly emulate the mic of the u87 on the mic input? Or are the mic emulations only on the guitar side for emulating capturing sounds from amp cabinets? Hope to hear from you soon. Mark

    • @mnash3
      @mnash3 4 года назад

      Hello Everyone,
I was able to complete my research.
The mic emulations appear to only be from a guitar perspective.
The other thing that is important to note is that my research provided feedback that it is all about the microphone and pre-amp relationship meaning the signal chain. So if you are in the market to upgrade your microphone, then you should consider upgrading your pre-amp. I settled on the idea of a Neuman u87ai with a Universal Audio UX6. Ohhhhhhh! It gets more interesting. There is this term called mic locker where the theory is that it is not only the combination of mic with pre-amp, but it is also factoring the consideration that different singers will sound different on different mics so you should consider owning a bunch of mics for that reason. I actually have some other mics, but for live performances, but much longer story. It gets even more interesting that there is not truly a spec chart specifically describing the details on the pre-amplifier when dealing with interfaces. There are external rack gear in the form of pre-amplifiers that a person can buy, buuuuuuuuuut I looked at that as a very expensive route for what I do....
Conclusion.... I decided to stay with my current setup which is a Groovetubes GT55 with my Eleven Rack. I did opt for room treatment with an Auralex ProPanel Kit#1. I don't think I need it, but I wanted it so I hope it makes a difference in my room. Once I have a bazillion dollars, I may upgrade to the Neumann u87ai with the UA X6. The reason for the upgrade is that my GT55 is considered a loud mic with self noise of 22 whereas the u87ai is considered a much quieter mic at 12. Because I prefer acapella music would be the reason for the upgrade. Note: I really wanted the Neumann u47 fet, but it is not that much quieter than my GT. I just thought it was pretty and I thought it would be cool to own a gaudy Las Vegas looking mic. lol....
Sooooo I hope that information helps some one.
      Peace and happy music making....

Great review, I have had mine for about 3 weeks and am blown away by all of the amp tones I now have. BTW.... I do believe this was an Eleven Rack review, not a comparison to the Axe FX 2. Also I have yet to see the new Axe FX ultra (USB input, etc) go for $1400. Where are people getting that this is half the price, it is less than 1/3 the price, and thats without including a DAW. And for the MIDI board, eurekasound has a chip for the Berringer FCB1010 that is nearly plug-n-play. Thanks :)

Hey Nick. I will be using one of these in a worship setting in addition to my working band. One of the biggest assets is the ability to get the tone you want across the entire volume spectrum from whisper to bleeding ear drums. Once you have your tones dialed in, you are not slaved out to your preamp tubes or your power tube saturation to maintain the sound you want.

I'm looking to upgrade my capabilities. I currently have the DigiTech 2120, love it. Except the fact it's almost 20 year old computer hardware. It's hitting it's peak and the knobs are starting to stop working. This does everything the 2120 did with the same amount of customization ability and configuration options. Plus the fact it directly links with Pro Tools is amazing. All Digital units are not for people who like to plug and play. It takes a long time to get an amazing sound out of them.

I just got this thing yesterday, and played with it last night. Very similar to the guts and insides of Line 6's Helix (which am dying to get my hands on). I loved a couple of the effects, especially one that started to fade in. I don't remember the name of it. Darn! Lol, anyways. I've warmed up to it some, and am starting to like it. The Eleven Rack was one of the best pieces of hardware Digidesign ever produced and is still one of the smartest products in Avid's current lineup. It's just brilliantly engineered and designed and works so well both in the studio and live, as well as just feeling and sounding like a real bit of guitar gear. This was a great review, it needs more love, and you didn't even get in to some of the other features like re-amping! Highly recommended but of kit, especially given the price and Pro Tools.

Steve Freyette did a video series on youtube called the Freyette Modeling Workshop where he ran Axe FX II, the Kemper Profiler, the Avid Eleven Rack, and the Line 6 Pod HD Pro through both solid state and tube power amps. IMHO, they all sound absolutely nasty through a tube power amp. You really can't lose either way you slice it.

Do you think it'd be better for me to buy the $600 version with protools over the cheaper option without but with the expansion pack? I'm planning on using it for both live and recording

I own it, and there is no latency. It sounds great, is extremely flexible, works as a DAW interface, standalone processor, microphone processor with +48 power, digital I0 and more.Play it in person before making judgement on youTube video. It's not perfect, but very usable. And compared to AxeFX2 costs thousands less. The difference between the two is not worth the money (in my opinion.) Try it yourself, then comment.

These days I'm wondering if hardware units are even worth it considering the plethora of top notch plug-ins that are equally as close. I like the Eleven Rack's start-to-finish signal customization, but with so many manufacturers including built-in software with their units (Yamaha THR10, Fender Super Champ X2, Blackstar ID:Core, etc.) -- it's not really a question of price, but more of preference.

I wouldn't touch one for live, but for a amateur/semi pro home recording setup where you can't let your lovely Marshall breathe, virtual amps can be great. Having said that I would use a s/w modeller, simpler, easier to manage recording the clean guitar so you can swap sounds later.

Dude Graham, it is unbelievable how tempted I am to get this interface right now, (especially after this informative video). I can't believe what a deal this is. @Zack Fichte, I have both amps, so ya- I have played them side by side. Besides we are talking about the input impedance not the (relatively small) tonal differences. IMO most the difference comes from their cabinets. No doubt they both have their own tonal thing going on though.

    Hi Graham,
I have been really sold on the idea of the eleven rack as I've never been happy with my direct in sounds from a Boss GT-100 which is super old technology now. So eleven would be a great step up for me in that regard.
But I am really disappointed to read that avid protools 11 doesn't support the on screen editing of eleven rack yet. How do you work around this. It seems a shame to have to run protools 10. Can you run it at the same time as pt11. Is it that big a deal as I am now reconsidering purchasing it or at least waiting till avid commit to sorting this out. But there are some good deals on ebay at around $400. But why can line-6 (I believe) produce an onscreen editor but avid cant - for their own product. How hard can it be?
Every time I upgrade it is a big hassle getting everything to work. I still haven't got my patch names working for my synth which I did manage to get working on PT9 after much frigging around (yamaha s90 ES). Now I've got P11 working reasonably after losing BFD lite and purchasing BFD3 and another 8 meg of ram.
Apart from these problems (patch settings still not working) I would have to start running PT10 and the whole point of upgrading to PT11 was to get the improved 64bit performance. This will be lost if I have to use PT10. Seems protools 11 has been out for a while now with no sign from avid of a fix to this issue.
Just wondered how you are coping with this issue and what you think about it. Many thanks for the great videos. They have been a huge help to me as a self taught producer
    Cheers and many thanks again

I have an 11 rack. It's fine but I wish there was a way to add IR's to this unit. How does the new AX8 compare to the 11? I know it has way more options but what about the amp mods? Does it also have the True Z inputs?

ok I have been looking at getting one of these for quite a while now, I mostly play electric guitar and bass(i play anywhere from metal, technical metal to jazz and funk ) but I do have to occasionally record acoustic guitar (either mic or direct line is ok) and vocals, I have no problem recording separately as its what I usually do and like, I'm wondering is this what I'm looking for or is there something anyone could recommend to better suit my needs?

Sorry, I'm new at this, but I would like to get something clarified... Did you plug your guitar directly into the soundcard? Like with a regular jack from the guitar and straight into the card? Or was there something in between? And if not... Can I do so and still get a good sound?
I need a very modern tone. One that can be fairly distorted but still sound crisp and clear.

tone is tone, the fender champ has been around for 60 years and is still used today. The 11r stands alone just fine without ever touching a computer. The public doesn't listen to amps or modelers or cabinets or IR's. They listen to songs. Most of us don't look a a photograph and wonder about the camera that was used to take ittook it. I suspect the 11r is going to be around for a very long time. I just picked up another one for 280.00. I still have a roland gp 8 that has killer tones in it.

Can someone please tell me something about this Eleven Rack? I saw it at my local guitar dealer, it's for sale (1500 euros but now 700). I'm not really into these units though. I'm a guitar player, I own a couple of real good high end guitars but just a simple Vox VT40+ amp. I don't care for that because I'm only into home recording and I own a Digitech GSP21 pro and Zoom 9150 too, both 19" racks. I always work with headphones. I'd really like to have a real nice Fender Tube amp for a long time now but I still haven't bought one. They're expensive and tube amps at low volume... I wonder if it's worth the money when you never crank it up. But as I said I saw this Eleven rack unit, it looks awesome, it also sounds good to me. Will this be better than my Digitech and Zoom units (both from the nineties) or give me something extra? And how are the Fender (clean) amp stimulations? That's what I am looking for... that clean Fender sound. For what I heard til now it's all great... I use a Tascam DPS 32 multi tracker (I'm not really into recording on a computer) but I still must buy an interface to make that machine work with my Mac and to record my acoustic Martin guitar. This Eleven rack is also a true interface? My Tascam DSP 32 SD had phantom power inputs etc., will these two units work together? This Eleven rack is not a recorder I guess, just a effect processor for guitar bass and vocal and and a full interface? When I buy this I will not need another audio interface? And can I plug this into my Tascam to record music without a computer? Really hope you can give me some information. I would really appreciate that. There's also this dude on RUclips who complains about this unit and warns people, you have to buy extra software to upgrade stuff etc. he says? Greetings from Amsterdam

All I have near me is a guitar center and I went with my iPod and played some tracks of varying genres to see how the speakers would respond. However, they have it setup very ineffectively to listen. Of the ones I heard, the Presonus Eris E8's and a pair of Tannoy 6" monitors sounded the best but I haven't run into many people that have used either enough to give a fair say of how they sound once they've used them long enough to really get to know them.

POD HD series does the same with the impedance of modelled amps and stompboxes, moreover it allows you to set input impedance manually

to all the Modeler haters. I agree a tube/valve amp sounds better live, but when recording not so much. The 11R sounds awesome recorded and you don't have to worry about high volumes, mic placement, mic bleed, etc. Plus you can recall the exact settings you used if you want to do some punch in stuff a week later.

Grant, I read that you claim that you get a sound on your eleven rack that is indistinguishable from you real Vox AC15. Where can I download you patches like the one you described??? Do you recommend running into a transparent amp and cab and micing the cab for recording? Or is going direct with the eleven rack good enough for pro recording going direct??

    • @rykerblade_snb
      @rykerblade_snb 9 лет назад +1

+Archie Rodenbo If you have an interface, like a small two channel interface, you can plug your guitar cable straight into the input on that, which is called DI or direct input, and then set up the virtual amp. The problem with virtual amps is that they can be very fuzzy and unrealistic sounding. Of course if you have an amp that has a digital output, you can plug into your amp, then plug the amp into your interface which will print your tone, but you still get the same kind of fuzz that makes virtual amps unrealistic sounding. Graham gives great advice to help with that though. And of course, if you have an interface and are asking if you should mic it, I assume you have a mic, which is always a great way to go because you have more control over how your guitar sounds. Hope this answers whatever questions you might have

    • @supershred
      @supershred 9 лет назад +1

+Archie Rodenbo this unit will actually serve as your interface and if you're using it for guitar then it will model your guitar tone as well! It can be used with vocals and bass as well. It's very nifty for a sort of all in one recording solution, including, access to a DAW (ProTools), the ability to model tones, and the capacity to act as an interface that allows you to record the tone you've created to the DAW desired through DI no reamping or amp mic placement confusion, I have a couple videos demonstrating some presets I've created you can check them out if you're curious to hear more!

I used the treadplate red preset with the 4*12 classic 30, almost like you dialed in around 24:00. My SM57 and 58 mics don't work well even with the gain turned all the way up, is this normal? I always have to increase gain digitally, so not sure it my mic preamp is bad, or whether those mics are only for really loud inputs. You also will want the expansion pack.

I have 11R and I bought a Mesa 20:2 singe rack space head and an ENGL stereo 2-12 closed back cab. Absolutely kicks ass. I use a midi foot controller live and I have tons of tones at my feet. I was playing a Mesa Roadster and this set up actually sounds better. Don't get me wrong I love my Roadster, but it weighs a ton and I am not getting any younger.....

I like the Axe FX 2. The Kemper sounds more compressed while the axe is just More Open. It's always better to have More tone because you can easily take away. Plus The Kemper relies on what profiles are made. Plus the axe is Crazy when it comes to customizing your amp. you pretty much can build your own amp all the way if you have the knowledge to do it. You sound how you want with an AxeII.

I used one and it is superb, the best emulator in hardware I have played. I would however thoroughly suggest using it with an outboard DAC as it's audio is very flat and dead sounding, especially next to a real amp.
Graham didn't mention; You can record your guitar as a 3rd mono track as it came into the Eleven, then re-amp via USB and re-record the track with a totally different rig OR play it to a real amp and use the mic preamp to mic that. Crazy good!

Does your pro-tools 10 and 11 software still work...? Since microsoft downgraded Windows 7 to Windows 10, my ProTools 10 and 11 is no longer compatible... and asio4all is no longer free. What's the best solution for this dilemma...? I'm running a windows 10 operating system on a beefed up creation station. Every time I extract protools files, download, then restart my computer to finalize the program I get the blue screen of death and have to re-install windows.
