This material is JUST AWFUL. Give me a break with the, "Back When" trope. And, yeah...I'm old enough to have personally experienced this sort of comedy - which was nothing but vaudeville transported to TV - when it was first run fare.

I'm laughing my ass off at all the yokels going on about wholesome tv in the good old days... The Mayberry sketch on here is the darkest thing I've ever seen from a network show! In the underground mag RAW, the Friedman brothers did a notorious comic strip about a Black man passing through Mayberry and getting lynched. This sketch is only a little bit shy of that, with Griffith talking about getting his Klan robes from the tailor and grinning his big ol' grin while reveling in stories of brutality and corruption - with the big punch line (in "part 2") being Barney Fife's new role as a kevlar-suited storm trooper! I LOVE IT!

This was an epic fail looking back now. Not funny at all. Nabors really did come off as ''how did I get here?'' in this episode. Maybe things improved in later episodes but this is painful to watch. His finest hour was Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. I own all 5 seasons on DVD and have watched every episode many times. The chemistry between he and Sutton was one in a million. My favorite episode is 'Come blow your top' when Carter is challenged by Sgt. Hacker to not lose his temper for 24 hours. Of course Hacker uses Pyle to try and set him off and by the 20th hour Carter has to drive to a remote location, climb a hill and scream his head off just to release some tension.

This was the type of show that was KINGA back in the day, the variety show.
Humor was corny as all get out but some worked while others didn't; unfortunately this show falls into the latter due to the writing. These guys were major talents, maybe not A listers like Griffith but good at what they did.
Again, the writing was the problem.
Variety shows by Carol Burnett, Sonny and Cher, Donnie and Marie, and Bobby Darin to name a few, were shows that WORKED, especially CB show..
The skit with Griffith was not funny at all...bad writing.
But again, this format is what "moved" folks back in the day.
Heck, the variety show concept goes back to the late 40s, early 50s so the formula, skits and singing with some monologue thrown in, did work, otherwise it would never have lasted as long as it did; the format died out in the 80s.
Jim Nabors had a helluva voice...too bad the higher ups insisted he continue his Gomer Pyle image way after GP went off the air.
