One thing I have learned from your channel that stands out the most is when you find errors like this from shops knowing myself I would have trusted their work and not taken the time to measure some of this stuff.
On my last project truck, every time there was a f-up, it was something I farmed out and didn't do (or couldn't do) myself.
Got to double check everything these days!!
Always best to take the time and double check.
Idk shit about cars but double checking everything seems like good common practice in any sort of field. Something about being thorough is satisfying
@@austinniemela hi Austin this is Rick Watson you posted on my comment and said I was the winner so what did I win ?
Good on you for double measuring the machine work and having the proper tools to do it! Trait of a real engine builder. So many Machine shops and shops in general have gone soooo downhill in craftsmanship and quality.
Really enjoyed and appreciate the work you a doing. I have an Hilux and I am building seeing your clips on your channel. Thank you brother for the great job well done. All the way from Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific. Cannot wait to see the next video. Cheers.
Mistakes happen and it sucks. How a company handles a mistake is a true gauge of their worth though. Hopefully all goes well and they get you something that works soon. I know a lot of shops are slammed so maybe it was a new guy that they hired out of desperation. Who knows. In the meantime we'll keep watching. I know it's frustrating but you'll figure something out. Keep it up man!
Thanks for always keeping it real and sharing the good with the bad! Much respect!
Jim (22re Performance) is good people. Glad to see them helping your channel out. I have quite a growing collection of their expensive stickers and the free parts that come with them (haha). Hate to say it but you might be waiting a while for a block. Standard bore 22r blocks are getting a little hard to come by, even overbored but usable ones are getting a bit scarce. Have two overbored but still usable ones stashed away for a rainy day.
Yeah man him is awesome! And my shop found a block and is getting to bored now!
Bummer! Glad you checked. Some of us would have taking their word that it was done correctly. New guy my foot.
22RE performance is awesome, always order stuff from them when I can. Sucks that they screwed your block, glad to hear they’re gonna make it right. It was cool of you to show all the measurements you did, I feel like most RUclips guys don’t show/do that part
Pretty sure he said it was another machine shop that the block was at
Great lookin out Austin! Would have sucked to have put it together after all that beautiful work on the heads and pistons.
I've become addicted to your videos. As soon as you upload a new video I gotta be one of the first ones to watch it. Much love from Burundi 🇧🇮. I own a BJ42 similar to the FJ you want to restore
That sucks man. This is exactly why I'm thinking about buying a boring bar for my 3RZ project - if you want it done right, do it yourself.
Sandblast or sand the face of your pistons with ceramic engine paint then bake them at 300 degrees for one hour, this is a heat barrier & it will protect the top of your piston if you ever have a lean issue, & do not forget the first step in assembling that motor, THE THRUST BEARINGS!
good luck in this assembly I'm doing the same assembly but with eagle rods ,arp rod bolts, main studs & head studs! Awesome setup Austin!
Man .... you are one patient guy!!
I'm catching up on your videos after a couple of weeks away and i can tell you i would be P@#$d off big time with the machine shop that stuffed your block.
As always you give just the right amount of information and chat required to understand what your doing.
Love ya work and the Toyota's you build.
Cheers from Sydney Australia MATE
🇭🇲👍🇭🇲🇺🇸🇭🇲👍🇭🇲
Thank you for the detailed explanation of rebuilding a 22r and how to measure
I am trying to upgrade my Toyota Hilux Kun25. Its really frastrating as the parts are so expensive here in Papua New Guinea. I am at a stage where my engine is knocking and I require a new engine head. So costly exercise. Well done on your upgrades
Austin my guy I do enjoy your work.....am automotive mechanic student...which to Learn more from you..I am in love with your work.... am from Zambia🇿🇲🇿🇲
Did you ever check out L.C. ENGINEERING? They are in Lake Havasue, Arizona, U.S.A.. They have Toyota engine parts and fully built engines for all aplications. You can even order a built 22R engine with a stroker kit, a turbo, a supercharger, side draft carburetors and header and stage 1 through 5 powered engines.
Screwing!!! See... now having handed it to professionals, to do a professional job....I would've just built it, good on you for double checking, something I will remember... never take anything for granted eh👍
Solid content here, Sucks that you have to go tru that , But we all learnd a bit more, Guess we get to see early FJ videos ? love this channel.
Excelente video bendiciones buen trabajo 👍
Bit of a bummer for sure, but at least you can show a realistic aspect to your video. This kinda stuff happens out there, and its helpful for your viewers to see how others handle these situations. Great video!
Man ..I'm waiting for body painting ..
He said he’s not painting body…I still say he will unless he sells it quickly!!😂
@@kflo1219 I know what you mean, this thing will be too sweet to leave the outside in that condition 🤣
@@kflo1219 he can if he wanted ..so far I see he did the hardest things ..
In my opinion without body work it’s pointless. Looks better with the patina.
I know he said he's going with the "patina" but seriously he needs to paint it. Bodies got holes in it.
Wow, great catch. They were hoping that you wouldn't catch the lazy machining. Sadly alot of people do not own bore gages and micrometers.
Hey Austin, I know it's frustrating but as usual, you did the right thing. I hope you can find a new option asap. See you soon, wizard!
All engine shops that I know the build engines for everything from everyday used to high horsepower still use plastic age because it's because it's easy to use it's accurate and and there's no misinterpretation of the plastic age
No doubt this men really doing a hard work.
One day you will get Millions subscribers.
But one thing bro where is my giveaway 🤣
💀
Most shops hone bores to .001" clearance per inch of piston diameter.
Sad that the details weren't observed, but as your own QA you found the error. Wonderful Austin.
The clearance on the cylinder bores might be your fault if you told him you wanted .002 clearance. Clearance is considered per side of the diameter, not total clearance. You wanted .001" clearance.
Hardest part of 22r is finding carb parts, unless you go weber or lc engineering 🤔
I need some help please. I have the 22RE 91 P/U in California, recently had a new gas tank put in and now I have gas coming out of the charcoal filter. Where would I find a map of the hoses for the evap system, I'm sure they just put the hoses on wrong. Tedious work on your rebuild. Don't know if I have it in me do go into that much detail anymore. We used to use a product called plastigauge to measure clearances. Probably not near as accurate as a micrometer.
YOU don't need to find another block......the shop that screwed it up does, and owes you one fully machined! I had something similar happen to me years ago. The owner of the machine shop apologized, got things done correctly, and the only thing it cost me was some extra days of wait time.
that's so unfortunate that this happened. Was looking forward to seeing you do this engine build
Hey brother they holding us up. They must do their job correctly👍👍
I really felt the frustration in your voice mate! I hope things gets better with the engine.
You rock, keep up the superb work!!!
Saludos de Argentina crackkk😊
Lookin good, I hope you find that block G

As sucky as that is, it's pretty cool they're willing to make it right. Most places would just tell you "oh well". Hopefully they make good on it.
Well that sucks. This random dude from Sweden hopes they will fix their mistake asap. Looking forward to see this build happen.
Never had a block come back from the machine shop with the old freeze plugs still in it.
I wouldn't use them again.
Dude this thing is gonna rip with that head!
That's why you check what the machine shop does. Good catch. Bummer though.
This is closed deck block. Ask them to rebore and then machine and install 4 liners.
Back in the day that was proper clearances for the old forged trw slugs. Not sure what your pistons are, check with the guy who did your head, you might be ok to run it like that.
ha ha you already knew that; shouldn't pause to comment.
Bummer, Stoked that you're going with a Toyota motor though.
I always buy Jim’s stuff he’s the best in the business 😊
Ok. Espero todo salga bien.
I think we need a ahop tour. Looks like you got a lot of unused space while getting the engine gear
Not gonna be painted. Keepin' the 'patina'!!!
Here in my country (as well as a lot of others), we only replace the block if it's cracked. Those liners can be fixed...
this is old toyota block. no liners in that one
Love the 20R-22R engines
SR 20 conversion coming up 👍
You lookin tired or highered in this vid bruh! Keep up the great work brotha 💪🏿💪🏿🦍
Dang Clean 🧽
Man that sucks, good luck getting her all back together. 🍻
please make a playlist, youtube doesn't show the videos in order, you should put a customized order to them, i need to know what to watch next after this to complete a motor
Make them buy you the larger pistons and the valving job that Jim does.
Austin Niemela dónde aprendió todo sobre vehículo 🚗 ? Qué embrague usaría??
At least he owned up to it and is trying to fix it. Mistakes happen.
I almost thought you were gonna diesel this rig
Sweet !!!! ( I have a rust free 1986 Toyota 4x4 single cab, 22R, that needs some love , need to save up $$$ and restore my baby )
I’ve had a rebuilt 22r in my dining room for 18 years waiting for a rust free 86 to 94 single cab 4x4 to put it in.
That sucks! It's always disappointing when others don't have the same standards that we do. I seem to recall this same thing happening with the tdi block. Maybe time to find a different machine shop?
New Guy?? Yeah, not likely. At least they're making good. Sign of a good shop that owns the mistake and does what they can to make it right.
Man I wish u stayed in Tx for we can do my truck
Austin pulls out the calipers. At that moment we knew, the block dudes had fucked up😆
Damn dude, before you said it I was saying to myself they should buy you a new block, glad they're owning up to it. Cool build tho 🤙🏽
Some "professionals" seem to not care about delaying a whole project. It happens all the time.
Have to accept it.
At least they accept liability and good job you checked instead of just putting together. That would have been more catastrophic
The only way your situation could get more frustrating would be if the Machinist didn't take any responsibility for the mistake. Keep on truckin'!
I hope they get you a 20/22r block they may try to do a later block
Daaang buddy
Welcome to my life. 😂 This sounds like the sort of thing that would happen to me! I’m sure it will all work out. Good luck!
The head is looks nice
Beams swap would be dope
That is what plastic gage is for makes so much easier
22RE Performance is the tits. Great choice. What block did you go with? Early 22r or new? It seems like you have an old one since you didn't deck it for the 20r head
I'd be findin me a new shop ! Never put a new hand on a project until they prove they know what they are doin .....
I have couple of 22re blocks here in Oregon
Engine check and spell check needed. Square
Could you have your pistons knurled? I know it’s old school and not done much any more but I thought I’d throw it out there.
Frustrating. Glad you checked! I wouldn’t have (novice) and trusted the machine shop. Would have stuffed the engine and thought it was my fault. Well done
Hey, I live in colville and know a guy in post falls who has a few 22re engines and gives fair prices.
Bummer about the block, but otherwise a pretty educational video!
👍👍👍
2goiz garaje main know about a block
That sucks man good thing you double checked everything. Work quality now days is so disappointing. I took my car in for simple tire replacement. The guys at the shop didn’t know how to use the balancer now the car shakes any speed over 50 mph . Now I have to try and find a place the knows how to balance tires . Something that simple
It’s always something
I got a block ready to go
Damn bro that sucks! A lot of people these days fail to deliver the quality they promise, pisses me off to no end sometimes.
are you painting the block also?
😍😍😍😍😍
The new guy....meaning the owner. lol
should definitely supercharge it
Somebody screwed up there beauty in engine parts cleaned up and also parts availability for these Hiluxes anything l have needed l can get in Australia l go to a very good local spare parts shop he said he can get any part for any car well at least for a 1997 Toyota Hilux these aren't that common but l do know of one who is local a double cab hard bodied ute very nice
Can you use larger rings?
Geez!!
I've got a 22re block in northeast TN if you still need one.
