You know how some gear just makes you enjoy playing? The JEL is one of those pieces of gear. It can get you in the ballpark of basically any good Marshall tone, and I don't know what else you really need. This video is telling me I need to play with the JEL mode and 50w mode some more though.
Subscribed! You’re a good dude man. What you do for individuals buying gear is a blessing. The reality is, we can’t hide from ourselves, -post editing is rampant and should be illegal with demonstration videos. -it’s what the amp sounds like in your room right in front of you. Many similar vein amps can sound near identical. The “garden hose” of deceit in the gear/YT community has become quite the stinky cologne.. Your guitar plsying is true to your amps you demonstrate. We get a keen flavor of the vibe. Me?, I’ll take that amp in 50 watt mode, Strat neck pick-up -fire in the hole.. Cheers for years!!
My word, I want one of these. Every time I see a demo, I just can't understand why Dave and BAD don't offer it as a regular model. The 20 watt version just ain't gonna cut it. Here's hoping they do a V2 100 watt someday.
The feel with the ambient mic you are using is hard to get when you’re doing your tweaking. Your audience would benefit from you mic-ing your speaker cab or using a load box with IR. Just saying. Great content and a lot of nice amps. Looking forward for some more comparison between those.
Thanks for the constructive feedback! I agree. I’m working on getting a better setup. I just prefer to spend time on the content and not the production process so trying to find a balance between the two.
Amp sounds great , it's a one tricky pony . Maybe not , the 100 watt sounds different than the 50 watt .... Great demo , ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Five star , incredible marshall roar 😂
Thanks for this!! I was really wanting to know about the difference between 50w and 100w in tone and feel. Can the Headfirst achieve JEL-100 tone and feel?
Yes, both are based on a 2203. The Headfirst is super versatile. It can sound like almost any Marshall-style tone especially with the bright switches and vintage/modern modes. I have a full review coming soon.
The JEL sounds nothing like an EVH. Not even close. Totally different amp, sound, and feel. The Little Sister will be much closer since it has a JCM 800 preamp into a JTM45 power section. It’ll be a little looser and bassier though, with a scoop in the mids and a little less gain.
How similar is the JEL to the silver jubilee? They seem to both be bright, high gain, and based on the JCM 800. I’d appreciate your thoughts. I’m debating on getting the silver jubilee or waiting patiently to see if Friedman releases another batch (or version) of the JEL.
Not similar at all. Two completely different amps. The JEL is literally a 2203 (100w JCM 800) circuit but with a few of Dave's tweaks here and there. The Jubilee is a 2555 circuit and contrary to popular belief, isn't based on the 2203. The Jubilee uses diode clipping to get its gain and therefore is a totally different amp that's more compressed, smooth, and dark (compared to the other Marshalls of its day). The JEL is brighter, tighter, and more percussive and strident. Being a modern amp, however, the JEL has a much better master volume, excellent effects loop, enabled channel switching, etc. The Jubilee sounds amazing, but it's an old Marshall, so it has to be cranked to sound good. You'll need to get the master to 6-7 before it starts to really fill out and reach its potential. An attenuator is highly recommended. You won't have to worry about that with the JEL. I don't think Dave will make more 100w JELs, but you never know. I know he has a plan for a 20w JEL "Mini," but honestly, I have never met a mini amp that I've loved. They're usually EL84 based instead of EL34 based, and have smaller transformers that sound thinner and weaker, especially at gigging volumes. That said, they're decent at home. But IMO, the 2203 circuit, whether OG or Dave's, demands 100w to achieve it's signature sound.
Awesome! Thanks for the info. Think I’ll be waiting to see what Dave does next. I’ve got a Twin Sister and the master volume is amazing. It nails the classic tones, but my next amp will be something more modern sounding
@@jheat4 No problem, happy to help! If you're looking for something that can do excellent modern Marshall tones without sounding like ass (*cough* JCM 2000 *cough*), then you should check out the Headfirst Amplification Alta 100. It's based on a 2203 but with soooooo many options, including diode clipping, bright switches, a Vintage/Modern voicing switch, two master volumes, and a VNFB control. It's an insane amp and Jason is a killer designer and all around awesome human.
Actually no. This cab is pretty mid heavy and dark. It’s got original ‘87 Marshall G12 Vintage (Marshall version of the V30) which sound very different to modern V30s: no ear fatiguing mid spike and a smoother top end. This cab is also has factory 8 ohm speakers wired at 8 ohms, so it’s darker than an equal 16 ohm cab.
@@HollywoodRareGuitars Well, I guess it’s time to visit your channel more often then. I have been talking to Dave F. about doing a mod or two to my BE-100 deluxe, just concerned about it surviving a trip out and back unscathed.
Did I just witness a demo of a “Marshall-esq” circuit, where the player wasn’t using enough gain to kill a small rodent? I may have to re-watch this. This was a really good demo…..how DARE you! I don’t think this guy realizes that there are two things you are NOT allowed to do on today’s social media, under ANY circumstances WHATSOEVER. 1). Support a president/politican who actually cares about America, and the laws that protect it (the few who exist)…..and 2). Use a level of gain that allows the rhythm playing to stay articulate, percussive, and tight. Goodness, there’s going to be hell to pay for this…
Great question! No you don’t have to, but you could. It will be two slightly different sounds. Direct quote from Dave: “What ever way you like the sound of it… it is still safe.”
I took a shot every time he said “right.” I shit myself int he head before I got drunk because it was so annoying. Live long and prosper: friends don’t let friends say “right” after every sentence.
Already sold, sorry! Pretty sure Dave is going to make a JEL 50 though. Probably on the Runt platform, but I'm secretly hoping on the Smallbox platform. Just be patient, don't settle for the 20 and don't spend $5k on a 100.
@@thomasstankiewicz9730 No, my favorite Friedman is the Naked. Second favorite is my Friedman-modded Marshall. Third would be the JEL. The TS and Smallbox would be next.

Was it your JEL that was on Reverb? I found out about those too late with it being such an amazing amplifier with very limited production.
I got the amp now, doing a bunch of shootouts with it.

How does this compare to the AFD100?
With a lot of amps when you cut to half power you have to change the impedance to half, do you not need to with this amp? Like 16 ohms to 8 ohms...
