The Friedman is easily the best sounding out of those and it wasn’t even close.
I think Friedman amps are the best sounding out of almost anything I ever heard. I wish I could afford one!!
That Friedman sounds goooood! But that MT still sounds pretty good too with it’s heavier low end. Nice comparison. Thanks for putting the time in.
I loved this comparison. I really wanted the mt-15 from the beginning. Now I want all 3. :)
Bro, the JEL just sounds better. It was a real good shoot out.
Shocking how good the JEL sounds. I have never played a Friedman but have been wanting to add a modified Marshall with bite and aggression to the mix. Thanks.
JEL sounds great! I have a Runt 50 and find it sounds great through some cabs and not so great through others. Still learning to dial it in. Would be cool to see a shootout comparing some of the Friedman heads in the same price range... JEL, JJ jr, Runt 50... Thanks again for an enlightening video!
try presence on 8 and treble on 4 to start !
This Friedman JEL 20 review is the best I have seen for how heavy this little monster can be.
Thank you!
I think Title of LBX King should go to the new KSR Orion. I’m looking forward to your review of it. Keep the great content coming brother!🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
The JEL wins hands down. The PRS was a very distant second. The Mesa sounded like my old beat up Peavey Rage compared to the JEL.
Hmmmm, I don’t know man! I’ll be purchasing an amp very soon and I’m having a hard time deciding between the jel 20 and the mark v 25. The mark v has fantastic “fendery” cleans, I’m not totally sold yet on the jel cleans. I know, who uses cleans right? Well, I do. You should do a challenge video to see how clean you can get the jel 20. In the mix that mark v had a certain badassedness to it, it seemed like a little bit of fuzz needed to be eq’d out, but it sounded huge. The jel would be my choice hands down if it was based on the gain stuff, sounds killer. Anyway, thanks for these videos, it helps.
Thanks for commenting. if I still had the JEL20 in my possession I would be happy to do that video for you but unfortunately, it was on loan from a friend of mine when I did this video.
I would say that the mark V25 is a bit more flexible though.
The thing about Friedman amps IMHO, they do one thing very well.
I really love you throwing the MT15 in the mix. I'm such a fanboy of the MT15. It's not perfect, but it's mean AF......
Have always loved Jake's tone , and thIs friedman doesn't disappoint , and still amazed at the MT sound for the money But the J e lee is def great sounding ,would love to see a.shoot out between JL 20 VS FB25
Appreciate your honesty...Sure, tone is subjective, but the overall sonic quality of the JEL-20 'SPEAKS VOLUMES'!
Great content Dude!
great vid J! really digging this type of shootout format!
The JEL Friedman 20 sounds brutal and better than the other ones I agree with you, I love the way it sounds and the riff bark at the moon just sounds right on the JEL Friedman.
Great review of these amps bro.
Thank you so much!
Nice shootout the JEL sounds great man. Have to mention though you talked about people playing bark at the moon wrong then proceeded to play it the most wrong way ever 😂
Still a good bud though just thought that was kinda funny
Haha yup I played it wrong in that one transition spot. I just don't want to learn the stretches lol.
The JEL sounded best. Easily.
Wow. Can't wait till mine ships.
The Friedman does more with less gain if that makes sense. Definition and Authoritative percussive amps.
Jarrod, In your opinion how bad is the Friedman JJ 20 watt amp compared to that Jake E Lee you just did ? I know you like the Jake E Lee better but by how much?
Good hearing from you as always. Good question...
Without having them side by side, I can't really tell you the exact differences between them. All I can remember is I just prefer the JEL and I don't know why exactly. For some reason I just gel with it better.
Maybe it's the gain structure and the thickness?
Tremonti is my guy but I also grew up with 80's metal so that tone is very familiar
Could you do a video on the overdrives and boosts you use? The settings you use, what works and what doesn't? Brit vs American style amps etc. Great video
Absolutely!
I second that request. Your tone does match mine more closely than many other YTers. Difference is that I pick harder naturally and can get a boosted sound with picking. I do use a boost now and then, especially when looking for a different tone or a shift in tone.
Again, thank you for your time and effort comparing and beeing honest about the capabilities all those amazing amps bring to the table. How do you feel the (not pulled) gain channel of the JEL20 compares to a regular JCM800? It should kind of cover that territory doesn’t it? Thanks man 💪👊
The JEL has so much more clarity! It’s got my vote!
Good comparision! Can it sound good and not be too loud on home studio?
I agree, it really bugs me when some one is comparing anything audio on RUclips and for some reason theres like 5 seconds between sounds. They dont even have to use any fancy equipment, you can edit it! lol I didnt catch if it had a clean channel. Edit, ok, I saw, its got a plexi and higher gain channels, pretty awesome.
The JEL sounds much clearer.
I think this compares favorably with a Splawn Street Rod, Competition, or Quick Rod. The same openness and stiffness in the way it plays.
Fun shootout! Keep up the great content brother!
Thank you!!
😮 I totally didn’t expect that at all.
Wow! I agree that the JEL 20 is clearly the best of the three amps. I was really amazed at an MKV 25 review you did three years ago. The graphic EQ on that amp is pretty great. But as you have demonstrated, there is congestion and a lack of high end clarity in the MT15 and MKV 25. Now, I should explain that I am biased here. I own a JEL 100 with two JEL 4x12 cabs. It has the kerrang of a great Marshall and better high end clarity than my other Friedman amps. I would love to see and hear you play through a JEL 100 and hear your thoughts (if you can find one!). Thank you Jarrod for another killer video!
Thanks for commenting, I would love to try a JEL 100 if I can ever get my hands-on one.
Would you consider time stamping videos? I want to check out your content but it’s really hard to try and jump around and find content in 20-60 min videos.
Yes I used to timestamp most of my videos but I kind of got away from that
It's kind of a pain in the ass but I guess if it's necessary, I will consider doing it again
This comparison video is terrific!!!
I'm really interested in the JEL-20. ... I'm hoping for someone to do a comparison with the Soldano SLO-30 as that's what I thought I was getting until this. lol
I might be able to do that comparison for you
@@TONEWARSgearshow That would be wonderful and greatly appreciated!!! I know they're a very similar amp, but they're very different at the same time.
Love your vids man, the krankenstein one inspired me to buy one. Though why does it seem like your video have weird frame rate dips?
Thank you very much. I noticed the frame rate issues as well. I'm still working on that. Hopefully I can figure it out and fix it soon.
Great video. Still watching it but curious to know if you’re using a load box or mic on the cabs? Thanks!
Nevermind just saw what you’re using lol. Sounds killer!
On my phone my results are
Friedman 1
PRS 2
Mesa 3
I’ve never played a Friedman but I’ve always been attacked to them, is like everything a Marshall is supposed to be, and them some! I’ve also read that they’re made to be reliable, they use great components and chance of failure is low, any thoughts on how this compares tone wise vs a Friedman HBE?
Thanks for commenting. Good question, unless I have them side by side I couldn't really tell you the big differences between them but I know I like the JEL better.
Jarrod, Maybe you can help me. I download the Friedman amps to the QC. Then for whatever reason they disappear. You know why?
Very sorry to hear that, did you get it worked out yet? I resent everything over to you the other day.
@@TONEWARSgearshow I am positive it has nothing to do with the transfer or you. I think it has to do with my unit. I download it and somehow it some of the captures vanish. I still do not understand. I happens with other captures I download from Neural. I got my unit near the time they first came out. maybe mine has issues.
Ya fore sure the present on the freedmen 😎
🤘🤘🤘✌️✌️
Friedman amps are typically some flavor of a Marshall circuit. The Friedman 100watt heads are good quality, but very expensive. Some of the smaller amps are not always that good in the quality department. This JEL-20 is the best sounding el84 amp I think I have heard. So now you need to sell your MT15, and your MKV 25, and add that JEL-20 to your collection. Maybe you are a Marshall guy after all! 😁
Friedman designs what most Iconic players had done to their Marshall's in the 70's,80's and 90's. Dave not only backs up every Friedman product personally but his Engineering on many model's is easily in Top Shelf boutique land as far as quality boards, components as well as Aesthetics's and Design Layout. I have a Custom Runt 50 that has been Egnater modded and it hangs nicely with Many a Marshall, Mesa ,5150, Splawn,etc....... Dave is a True amp Builder Tone Alchemist for the masses. Now I have too save $1600 and get me a 20 Watt JEL as well.
@@ricdale7813 Dave is well-respected in the guitar amp community. Everyone knows what he has accomplished. His amps sound great, and he has a flavor for every style of music/player. Legendary artists partner with him, because he delivers what they want. Having said that... it's not a brand "for the masses". It's a brand for the pro players, and rich people who like buying expensive things.
Like you, I’ve never been a huge Friedman fan but this was a clear cut victory for the Jel 20, no doubt. That Mesa was a fuzzy congested mess. The Mt15 was descent but I think it’s worth it to save the extra pennies up and get the Friedman.
Thanks for commenting, I was really surprised at this shoot out.
I honestly thought the MT15 was gonna kill everything
yes!!! Thank you!
gread video ! hard to compare given the price point is so different, tonally from what i heard the friedman is incredible. ive always wanted to try a friedman , JJ or the be 100 delux, serious cash though. in the uk the mt15 is over 1k cheaper than the friedman jel and the mesa mk v
I love my MT15 especially since its half the price of the others...can't beat it
The JEL is amazing. 🤘
Welp…
The Bark at the Moon riff says everything that needs to be said for which amp wins.
Damn. I’ve been ready to pull the trigger on an MT15 for a while.
Looks like it’s time to pony up twice as much.
This amp really surprised me. I didn't expect to like it so much
@@TONEWARSgearshow I’m sold and just ordered!
The Friedman Amplifier sounds the best, but the $1699 msrp is steep for small sized head. The PRS MT15 is the best bang for buck IMO. Can get them pretty cheap used.
Well this didn't help my desire to buy a JEL, especially since I also own a MT15 and think it's awesome. I do think you have the gain up too high on the MT15 if you're boosting it and that would clean up that fizz a bit but even then I think it would have a hard time vs the Friedman.
Which OD did you hit it with? The one in the description (GRID SLAMMER)??
I used the Warm Audio ODD Box
I’ve always found the MT15 sounds really dark and Mesas really fizzy in clips. JEL is definitely more to my taste out of these 3. Just sold a Fireball 25 which was a great little amp but moving back away from lunchbox amps until this blasted JEL20 came out, so versatile!
Just saw the lead playing and actually like the MT15 as much if not more than the JEL for those clips, Mesa still way behind.
Should’ve watched the whole video before commenting, Mesa sounded good in the mix😂
The KHE switchers are so amazing...and it's ruined my life.
Can you load external IRs with the JEL? Or are you stuck with the internal IR it comes with in the direct out?
It's an analog cab Sim so no you can't load your own IRs into the amp
@@gabrielstevens41 hmmm ok thanks for the response
@MK-oz2lf I do think it would be nice to be able to turn it off and at least use a IR loader of some type but I run through a torpedo cab m anyway so it's not a huge deal for me
@@gabrielstevens41 true
Friedman sounds killer
How does it do against the JJ Junior
Great sounding amp however it should sound better at 1699 vs 799 prs which is a huge price difference. The mesa sounds great too but more expensive then the other two. I just don't see 1700 for a 20 watt amp. Seems ridiculous to me.
Welcome to 2023
Very hard to say which is better as they all have a different midrange frequency that stands out. It is a matter of personal preference or how it fits in with the band you are playing with. All awesome though. That said, I thought the Mesa was the loser in the shootout... too bright.. but I am sure it could have been dialed in to be like the Tremonti.
Agree
I think I’ve gotten my Mark V 25 to sound much better than what was presented in this video.
Well, nice video and nice play mate but really pointless as a comparison.i mean there is such a difference in price that I cannot see the relationship. Yeah sound good, bur is a completely different beast so...the MT15 still makes more sense to me. But of course you can spend your money on what you want!
Also not a friedman fan not usually a fan of the tone or the way he treats people but this one actually sounds great.
That’s that note separation son!! 😂
That's right SON!!
@@TONEWARSgearshow 🤣
Is it just me, or was that Freedman sounding like it was in Devil Driver territory?
JEL Friedman vs EVH 15 lunch box red channel shootout.
Lol, I think you made a very convincing video for anyone that can afford an amp that’s under $600 lol…MT15 is killer…
$569.... the Boss Katana Artist head!
@@TheCyberMantis have you played both amps side by side at full power?
@@ivanzivanovic4013 Nope. What is your point?
@@TheCyberMantis well maybe go play both, and then maybe you would be able to formulate a better opinion. Katana is modeler, not a tube amp. Great for various sounds, but when it comes to high gain...heavy metal...chuggs...nah...but to each his own...have a friend that owns both...but has not gotten rid of the MT15 though...
I thought I’d like the MT15 the best but the Friedman sounded way better
Friedman JEL hands down.
Not even close. Even for a couple of power chords the difference was huge, so you can imagine for rock tones. The JEL had more bite, bark, and the other two amps sounded like a can of bees muffled by a blanket.
Personally the Mesa sounded like Sh$t in all the comparisons. The MT-15 sounds like its in a bucket and the Mesa under the covers of a bed….Lol. Friedman hands down wins IMHO….
The Mark series is so overrated. It honestly sounded atrocious. The Friedman is amazing. Jake always had stellar tone. The MT 15 is cool for what it is but it’s like comparing apples to oranges. It’s a mesa boogie voiced Amp specifically around a rectifier. Of course it’s super frizzy Friedman, for the win.
Honestly the Friedman isn't anything special and I really preferred the mt15 which sounds much warmer/darker and tighter/compressed... The Mesa sounded surprisingly fizzy, scooped and weird in the low-end but I bet it can sound much better with different eq.
In the end the sm57- v30's combo is really harsh and boring.
For the money hard to beat a used prs
This test proved once again that the only thing a Mesa is good for is a doorstop. Or perhaps a small step stool to reach stuff in your cabinets. That MK V 25 sounded like a combination of loose diarhrea and cooking bacon in the bathroom while you spray poop into the toilet. Bacon frying diahrea. Maybe sausage frying. But at any rate the Mesa sounds like raw diahrea with eggs and pork fat frying in a cheap walmart skillet. The Mesa is awful and this test proves it. Both the PRS and Friedman sounded like proffesional amps that real authentic guitar players would use.
Not keen on the Mesa then? 🤣
Dude the Mark kicked ass…
