  • In this video I'll be doing some preliminary prototyping of a magnetic "MagSafe" charging expansion card, and a hidden RF Mouse dongle Card for the Framework Laptop. Although these are primarily for finalizing PCB dimensions I will see if I can get them to actually function.

To my absolute surprise, HP does! Or did. For older laptops, repair manuals exist, which include fairly detailed schmeatics, maybe not full boardview level, but still pretty detailed. Thing you can find while using HP Part Surfer are pretty amazing. But, when Haswell came, with the last socketable intel mobile CPU being Core i7-4700HQ HP never bothered again.
That didn't stop them from whitelisting WiFi and WWAN adapters.

One thing that interests me would be a dual-USB expansion card. It obviously would not have full bandwidth in both slots, but it would be great for devices that don't need the full 10Gbps transfer speed like a USB numpad/mouse. The card definitely has room for at least two type-C slots, even if type-a doesn't work out.

    • @DigitalJedi

I'm honestly super excited to see what expansion cards third parties come out within a few months' time with proper R&D. For one, there's nothing preventing someone from making a multifunction card - just put a USB hub controller chip on the PCB, and we could possibly have a "Logitech dongle with USB passthrough" card. Now that's something I'd pay good money for.

I would definitely love to see you do a video on connecting your eGPU to the Framework Laptop! I have mine on order and currently scheduled for October release and that’s one of the first things I want to try setting it up to as soon as I get it (my Razer Core X with 5700 XT). I actually just SUBBED just so I can keep an eye out for that video in the future!

I'd bet there is going to be some demand for a Serial port module down the road, lots of applications where hardware still use serial ports that would make this laptop a no-brainer upgrade

i ordered a framework a couple days ago. i have always wanted to get into electronics design and i hope i can use the framework to do that while having a great laptop

i love seeing all the coverage that the framework laptop is getting lately, but I think this is by far one of the best I've seen. This, this is the world we could be living in if large companies got rid of their anti-consumer practices, where you can just design something for your laptop without having to reverse-engineer it first

Found your channel through this video. Pretty exciting to see what people do for the Framework laptop as I'd love one eventually. Love the magsafe idea, and RF module for mouse solves my biggest pet peeve about laptops : ya still need a dongle for the mouse if you somehow hate BT

Would love to see more Expansion module videos like this one!
    Stupid suggestions:
    A fingerprint reader
A Zigbee radio for smart home control
    RGB led module for "GAMING!"
Cup holder module with internal heater
    NFC reader/writer
    Headphone jack
Wireless charging (maybe stretching it a bit...)
